What a great convention! Janice, thank you for posting the photo! What a great idea to get a group picture and the staircase was perfect. I just need to make a small correction. I am Anita Hansen (not Harris) that is next to you in the front row on the right. Jeri, I loved meeting you and your spider hat was the *perfect* Arachne luncheon accessory! I was all set to work on my Tonder class project this morning when I realized that I had packed my pins in the box I shipped home. No problem, I have more pins. But now I realize I also packed my class notes and diagram in the box too! Hopefully it will arrive this afternoon. I guess I will be stalking the mailman! LOL! I will also try to post more often and not just lurk. Yeah, Clay! grin Actually it also depends on what industry a person works in. Lacemakers and many others look experienced and wise with grey hair, whereas software engineers are often assumed to be out-of-date and with not long to last in the industry. [lace] Demonstrating Bobbinlace at county fair
Had a good three days of demonstrating bobbin lace at the community building where the handicrafts exhibits were located at our local fair. I am working on Bucks Point Lace in black thread. I know.not traditional for Bucks, but I like black lace! I a using a Danish style roller pillow that I had made and using midland spangled bobbins. Hi Devon and other Arachnids, Don't dye your hair; GROW OLD DISGRACEFULLY! Enjoy it! Have fun! Enjoy the fact that there -probably- is more time for lace making. [lace] pattern and thread size
Hello Spiders, I have a pattern I like and want to make, its bucks but the original calls for Brok 100/2 which I dont have or anything else that fine. I dont mind using Egyptian 60/2 so can anyone tell me how much bigger the pattern might need to be, to take the difference. 39 wpc rather than 56 wpc. Re: [lace] Arachne Lunch
I agree! And then I have to confess... I began coloring my hair in my late 20's because I started greying prematurely!! (Honest!) So, by the time I was 50, I had no idea what color my natural hair was. Finally, my hairdresser said that I had more grey hair than auburn, so I finally let it grow out. I looked like Ronald McDonald (the McDonald's clown) for a very long time... it was awful! Turns out, I had a nice mix of dark and white, (salt and pepper) and once the dye had all grown out, I got loads of compliments about my hair. Now, the dark has mostly gone, I'm mostly white/grey, and it's not drawing the compliments any more, but at least I don't have to spend an hour a month getting it colored, and the money I save is definitely better spent on lace books!!! [lace] Very smart at making mudjas
Dear Friends, I finally reached my own bed at 0230hrs yesterday after an exhausting trip home from Fiji - better tell that story on chat. I spent a lot of time there knitting socks for the very poor and am now known locally as the man who is very smart at making mudjas! Mudja is the Hindi word for socks. I am writing this to lace in the hope that someone here can solve an annoying problem for me. I've knitted Granny's socks for many years now and to finish them off requires grafting 2 needles of 10 stitches in stocking stitch. No matter how hard I try my grafting always comes out as a purl row (knitters should know what I mean). I've followed exactly the directions in the Readers Digest book as well as Mrs. Beaton and must be doing something wrong. If someone could clearly explain the correct method I would be eternally grateful. Granny never had this problem!! Re: [lace] pattern and thread size
Hi Sue If you have one of the later editions of Threads for Lace have a look at the thread wraps per space - page 8 in Ed5. The finer the thread the more leeway you have in the number of wraps/cm you have, but. for a Bucks (point ground) pattern using a 58 w/cm thread (slightly finer than Brok 100/2) the ideal space between footedge pinholes is 1.8mm. For a 40 w/cm thread (slightly finer than Egyptian 60/2) it's 2.5mm which is quite a bit bigger. 100% / 1.8 x 2.5 = 138.88 so you need to increase your pattern by 139% which is a lot. A4 - A3 increase is 141% which is only marginally bigger. Re: [lace] Very smart at making mudjas
Yes, David... the term is kitchener stitch. It solve that problem at the end of the sock. However, if you're feeling adventurous, you may want to try knitting your socks toe-up! Use Judy's Magic Cast-On (see it on YouTube), and your start is invisible. Knit the sock to the top and bind off!! A number of other advantages as well... It's the sock I teach at our LYS!! And have you used the Magic Loop instead of double points? It's not your Gran's sock world any more!
