[lace] Cuba
Dear Arachnids, Does anyone know of lace venues/shops/groups/musea in Cuba, please? We hope to be visiting there shortly, but are unable to find any information on this subject. Also, if there are lace makers there are there any shortages of materials for lace making? Hi All I colour my hair, well the hairdresser does, but I use the time that I am sitting about to read books, check the next pattern I am -panning to do. I use this time as planning/thinking time. I always take some lace oriented thing with me. I have even been known to sit and tat!!! And that doesn't happen very often. Dear lacers, I need some advise on how to sit and where to make lace. I keep having problems with my back and/or neck. I first sat in my settee with pillows in my back. Now I'm on a chair. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hello Ilse, The best place to sit is the place where you are comfortable making lace. But as a rule, I would say that you need to rest your back always on a surface (back of chair or of a sofa). You must feel your back relaxed. Usually, after making lace for a while, especially if it is a new piece where we need to put a lot of attention, we tend to tension our back little by little without noticing, and finally it becomes back ache. So, relax your shoulders and arms from now and then moving them in circles, for example, and check that you are sitting properly. (I work with a vertical pillow, so I sit on a comfortable chair and lean the pillow on the table. When I work with a roller pillow, I like sitting on the sofa, with pillows at my back and the lace pillow on my legs... that's for me the most comfortable place. I dont' know how lacers work on a flat pillow). I hope this information helps you. Best regards... Re: [lace] Cuba
Hi Joepie When I was there eight years ago for my daughter's wedding the only lace I saw was the garter I'd made for her. Although the tourist areas were affluent enough and the hotels well stocked with food there were shortages of just about everything. ie the hotel's hairdresser didn't have any hairspray, we had to provide our own! True, we only saw Varedero and went through Havanna for the transfers from and to the airport, but I don't think there is a tradition of lacemaking there. I don't know how much it has changed since 2003. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hi Ilse and Arachnids, Normally I sit on a straight chair (dining room or kitchen type) with a small support pillow in the small of my back. The flat pillow is on a stand at a comfortable height and pulled well into me so I don't have to lean forward too much. Try to work out which the most comfortable position is for you. The most important thing is; DO NOT SIT AT YOUR PILLOW FOR TOO LONG. Get up, move about, do a few gentle stretching exercises (roll your shoulders, pull them hard up towards your ears and drop them loose, gently bend your neck back and forth and then from side to side, [DON'T roll your neck], reach for the sky and then the floor etc.) before getting back to the pillow. I have a very bad back and that is what I try to do -though sometimes the lace gets away with me and I suffer for it-. Hi I use a 'kneeling chair' when my back is bad, this enables your knees to take the stain rather than your back. I bought the cheapest one I could find several years ago and it has been fine. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Ilse, you have hit upon one of the most vexing issues about making lace! I am certain that the answer depends on what kind of pillow you are using, and how it is used. And, what works for one person may not work for another! (Consider, for example, how much closer a thin person could sit to her pillow that a person who carries more weight around her middle!). I have talked to a professional Physical Therapist about this. Her specialty is helping people with occupational injuries. She explained to me that my posture at the pillow was critical, that I should lean forward from the hip, not bending my back. This is easier said than done, in actual practice, and she recognizes this. She also said it is important to have your seat at a height where your knees are slightly higher than your hips (footstools can make this happen), and that our forearms should be horizontal as we do our work (not reaching up or down). Essentially, the things that make us more comfortable working at our computers should be applied to our lace work. One of the most important things is to set a timer, and to get up at regular intervals (an hour at the latest) and move around, stretching and relaxing muscles that have been used. She also recommends doing strengthening exercises on the back so that over time, it becomes stronger and able to withstand the stress we put on it when we make lace for long periods of time. The most helpful thing I have done (and I'm not kidding here...) is that I got a puppy. My DD gave it to me for Mother's Day, and while I was not sure about this new family member, I am very fond of him and find that he reminds me on a regular basis that it is time to get up and move around! Several friends have an excellent plan... they listen to music while they work, and use the old-fashioned CD player... With this, they are forced to get up at the end of each CD to change it. This would not work for me, as I like perfect silence better, and the lack of music would be welcome. So a timer is better for me - or a puppy! Good luck solving this issue! It is not something to be ignored, and you may have to try numerous things before you find solutions that work for you. I agree with Clay - we have our son's young cat, who brings his favourite toy for me to throw at frequent intervals, and now puts it slightly out of my reach, so I have to get up. I have just made a third small strip of lace with picots around the outside edge, each one getting tidier than the last of course. [lace] Lace exhibit opening August 20, 2011 Atkinson, IL M...
Dear Chris, Thanks for this announcement. It is rare for us to read of a local lace exhibit in the U.S. A reminder to all Americans, including Chris in ILLINOIS and Kim, who wrote from CALIFORNIA, that there are many non-Americans on Arachne. We cannot expect them to know the abbreviations for American states. Please give them this small consideration. They have politely requested this in the past. It occurs to me that there must be some lace experts in the U.S. and in Belgium who would like to make a connection with the ladies from the Moline Belgian Cultural Center who will be demonstrating lacemaking. Do these ladies know about _lace@arachne.com_ (mailto:lace@arachne.com) ?Do they have a local lace group? Would they be willing to share a contact address? You may reply just to me, if they express privacy concerns. Then, are there any American lacemakers who would like to make contact with these ladies to share experiences about making traditional Belgian laces? Re: [lace] Pillow holder - wood box conservation concerns
Dear Lyn, This brings up another issue: Holes in the wood boxes could allow moths, insects, and micro-organisms to infiltrate. This is something to consider if critters are present in the home. You know if there are moths in your environment. Insects and micro-organisms can come inside on cut flowers, plants, fresh produce, family pets, people, etc. When I bought a 200-years-old Scottish tall clock at auction, I sent it right from the auction house to a wood expert, to be treated against critters. (There were traces of sawdust in the nooks and crannies!) (A friend told me how a tiny mouse worked its way into a closet and dined on waxed thread that was used to secure beads on a dress. By the time she discovered this, all the beads rolled to the floor when she lifted the dress. With no original pattern, the beaded dress could not be restored.) Again, make sure you put your review reminders on your personal calendars and keep these things in rooms you live in, not the attic or basement! Store your blue jeans in iffy places, not your lace treasures. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 8/14/2011 6:45:10 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time, lynrbai...@desupernet.net writes: Dear Robin, You are quite right about wood. One of the things I got from Jeri's advice is that circulating air will really help to dissipate acidic air. So I'm toying with holes in the boxes, with the unbleached muslin bags touching the wood, and not the pillow. They are easier to replace than the pillow cover. Perhaps providing air circulation around the boxes by putting them on small feet, or just a piece of wood on the bottom to keep it separated from the box below. Opening the box on St. Catherine's Day is a great idea. Opening them up more frequently is probably even better. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] fungi seen by Dona Bushong
Hi All, Since David Collyer is home I will re-send this e-mail that Dona wrote a few weeks ago. I know David made this fungi in lace but I can't remember where it might be posted! As I recall it was for a show with an interesting name. Yesterday while walking our pups, my husband and I stumbled upon an amazing mushroom. It looks as if a fairy has placed a lace skirt around it. Now we don't get a lot in the way of lace around here so if something remotely resembles lace I take note. I at first assumed it was a toadstool but further research shows that it's indeed edible. Unfortunately the way it reproduces is not by spreading spores via air like most mushrooms but by having the smell of carrion thus attracting flies, with the flies spreading the spores. The common names of this mushroom are bamboo fungus, bamboo stinkhorn or veiled lady. The latin name is Phallus indusiatus. I've uploaded a few photos to my webshots album, Dona B if you're interested in seeing my lacy mushroom. I do remember it was a bit shocking VBG. [lace] How do you store your prickings?
Hi all, I do a bit of teaching so have multiples of my teaching prickings as well as my personal prickings. I use laminated paper prickings so the majority of the prickings for storage are A4 or smaller but the fan prickings are slightly larger than A3. If I have gone to the effort of producing the pricking and actually PRICKING it I sure don't want to toss it out after use so storage is the answer until I want to remake that pattern - but how to store it so I can find it later? I started with trying to store them at the back of the books they came from, but some are from Lace Express or Australian Lace magazines and some are the ones I have designed. Right now some are in plastic sleeve files - sorted on type ; length, cornered, christmas, mat etc some with my teaching notes some in the stack on the bookshelf some ... It is just not *organised* so when I am hunting for a pricking I can never find it until I remake the darn thing. Considering: But please let me/us know of a different/better way putting a numbered sticker on each pricking and storing them numerically in bunches of 20 in suspension files in the filing cabinet - marking the original source (book, mag) in pencil with the pricking number Did I make your brain hurt with all this? Re: [lace] picots
My, you have opened up a can of worms. This group discussed picots some time back...might be available in the archives. Anywaythere's a lot more than one way to make a picot. You don't really tell which kind you are doing. If I don't touch on your picot, let us know. The basic knotted single picot that appeared in my beginning book is made with the pin in fingers, twisted around the threads in the proper sequence, and then the pin inserted in place with the picot thread already around it. This one has great control of the thread and pins, and is probably not your picot. Most single picots are made with pin in fingers, and then pinned in place. So let's explore the two thread twisted picots. The Binche picot is worked with the pin in fingers, so it's probably not that one. Let's look at the Point Ground picot. This picot has two threads twisted, then the bottom thread is pinned in place with pin in fingers, but the top thread is flipped around the pin. The cure to not catching a second pin when 'flipping' is simple. When looping the first pin, pin it an inch outside your pattern. Flip the second thread around (no other pins near it). Then carefully lift the pin with the threads around it and move it gently into it's proper place. Keep the tension mild until final pinning, then tension the threads, make the final twist(s). Wow!! Perfect picot and NO extra pins. Does this help? Alice in Oregon -- where we went to the coast for lunch today with the church's Lunch Bunch. Blue sky, no wind, no rain. Beautiful! - Original Message - From: Sue hurwitz...@btinternet.com I have just made a third small strip of lace with picots around the outside edge, each one getting tidier than the last of course. I dont do them very often but I have found that on the first strip I have caught one of the loops over two pins instead of one, closer to the end than the beginning of the lace. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Announcement - Lace exhibit opening August 20, 2011 Atkinson, IL Museum
http://www.atkinsonil.com/index.php/community/history Please see the web site link. Atkinson is a village. A Proud Heritage While its earliest settlers were from a variety of countries, Atkinson saw large numbers of immigrants from Belgium and Holland begin to arrive in the 1860s, bringing with them solid clad values like hard work and thriftiness, a game called rolle bolle, and other ethnic/ cultural icons that are woven into the fabric pf modern-day Atkinson. The Atkinson Museum, for example, showcases pictures, family histories, personal belongings and letters, and numerous artifacts representing contributions to the community that these later immigrants made. Local phonebooks are liberally sprinkled with names brought to Atkinson and the surrounding area from Belgium and Holland. Re: [lace] sitting comfortably to make lace
Hi, I've been following all the responses on comfortable positions for making lace and am surprised that no one has come up with my solution. I use my wheeled office chair with adjustable height, angle and back support. With my feet firmly planted on the ground (I suffer from short legs) I can then pull my pillow stand close and don't seem to have any problems with my back. My study has fantastic natural light most of the day and my pillow is positioned to take advantage of it. Hope this idea might help others.
