Re: [lace] Choosing a gimp
It is not necessary to plait them. Just use several of the threads together. That is what they often did in Chantilly. Sometimes they even took one out and used it in the body of the lace if they needed it, and then put it back into the bundle. Devon In a message dated 5/24/2012 5:22:46 P.M. I'd like to try some Bucks Points patterns that I have, but I don't know how to select a proper gimp for this. Is it ok to use a cotton thread like Pearl Cotton as a gimp in silk, or should I try to keep everything the same type of fiber? I am also worried about color matching. Can I use a plait of the same threads instead of finding another thread entierly? Re: [lace] Choosing a gimp
As Devon says, it's not necessary to plait threads for a gimp, just use several strands together to make up the required thickness, which is at least four times, and preferably six times the thickness of the main thread. Mixing cotton gimp with linen thread is OK, they are both cellulose fibres, but I wouldn't use cotton gimps with silk which is protein.
