[lace] Lappet project

2012-11-17 Thread lacelady
I'm working on a lappet from the new OIDFA book. It's been a learning
experience.

First, the lappet I chose had an incomplete pattern. I told the List about it.
The missing part of the pattern was printed in the most recent OIDFA Bulletin.
(I suggest the page be copied and put in the book for future reference.)

However, at the time I didn't want to wait for the correction, so I chose a
different lappet to work. It had a pricking with dots and a few markings, plus
had a detailed small diagram. I prepared the pricking, and started. I found
the work went very slowly as I found my place on the diagram, and then figured
out which dots marched on the pricking. I was constantly going back and forth,
and getting a bit frustrated.

Then my brain finally worked. I enlarged the diagram to the size of the
pricking, and replaced the pricking with the diagram. It is much easier to
just work over the pair lines instead of coordinating two separate pieces of
paper. I use diagrams a lot on other laces, without the frustration. I think
perhaps many prickings have more markings that this one so it's easier to keep
track of position.

The point of this story is to suggest that you consider working directly on the
diagram if you choose to make one of these lappets. Patterns vary, and if it is
very sparse with markings, check the diagram.

I've done about four inches on my lappet. There's a long way to go, but it
should be interesting when it's finally done. I'm making it with a variegated
blue thread. The bit that's done is quite pretty.

[lace] lapetts

2012-11-17 Thread Sue
All you very clever people who make these fabulous lapetts, I want to ask
you what you do with them once made? Obviously not a fashionable item
these days but too beautiful to sit in a box. I have seen some patterns for
them and also some in the flesh as it were being made at a lace day event.

An interesting story. What kind of lappet is it? Mechlin? Bedfordshire?
Point ground? Old Flanders?

[lace] lappet project

2012-11-17 Thread lacelady
A lappet is technically one piece of lace designed to be attached to a cap and
hang down one side of the face. They were used in sets. People started
attaching a set together in the middle so we find the term lappet used for both
one side piece and also a long connected piece with two finished ends. It's
been a few months since I read the OIDFA book about the lappets but I remember
that it's about the lappets used in Herrmannsburg, Germany. They were probably
not made there but acquired wherever possible. I think the main style was
Guipure. At least, that's the name I attach to the style of lappet I'm making.
It may have had a passing acquaintance with Beds because the edging is braids
and picots like I've seen on Beds things. It has trails that run parallel, and
half stitch sections with leaf tallies on top of the half stitch filling.

I use a lappet as a decorative scarf. Tuck the middle under a jacket collar
and have the ends hang down each side in front. I like to wear the black one
on a red jacket. However, at IOLI conference I have been known to wear lappets
on my head... a different one each day. It was a fun way to use some of my
antique lappet collection. By the end of the week, there were some other brave
souls also wearing lappets.

Sue, I can attest to the fact that while I have not made one, I do own a lovely
old one (a gift), and I have seen many worn in the way they were intended at
IOLI Convention Banquets. And several years ago, Alice Howell wore one to the
closing dinner at Lace at Sweet Briar!

[lace] UK Lace

2012-11-17 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I happily received my UK Lace magazine last week, but sadly noted in the
list of obituaries that besides the passing of Pat Earnshaw, and various
other lacemakers, Mrs. Ruth Bean's name was there. That is sad, and I am
sure others will agree that she has given us all so much enjoyment, and
knowledge, from her Publishing of lace books.

Where would we be without books? I shudder to think of life so barren!
Surely the invention of the printing press must be one of the world's great
ideas!
