Re: [lace] peccadilles
Hi Julie and fellow Arachnids, Thank you Julie for a very interesting 'thread' which certainly looks worth following up. Further as to lurk or not to lurk; when I joined a few years ago, I got 'shot down' by a lady from a most unexpected quarter and did not post for several months. Then being me [I can't keep my mouth shut if there is a point to make ;-)], I waded in again. The point is; do what you feel comfortable with, but it is nice to get some acknowledgement occasionally of a point made or information/knowledge/assistance given. As far as language (English or any other) is concerned; please have a go at posting, we can usually understand it (if not we can ask for help) and are thankful for any new point, technique and little trick that may help us to make better lace. Anyone who gets upset because of grammar/spelling or other perceived failings; it is their loss if they cannot see past that to the point of the posting. Happy lace making and posting, Joepie, East Sussex, UK From: Julie Ourom I came across a mention of peccadilles in some non-lace reading .. Here's Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piccadill http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piccadill There seems to be other information online, not all in languages I read. Here's one that confirms the Wikipedia entry (or may be where the information originated J.) The reception people get when they post is arguably a major factor in why people stay or disappear and surely the latter is not what we want. In the meantime, I hope the information on peccadilles is useful to someone. Re: [lace] Need to share the pain
Robin I am so sorry for your tipped pillow. This happened to me once in a class, Bridget Cook was the instructor. I was trying to untangle each thread caught on the pins. She said no no, and to my horror picked up my pillow turned it upside down and gave it a little shake or two and all the threads fell away from the pins! We have had many cats over the years and I have had to use the untangle method a couple of times. I would imagine if your spangles are too heavy you might break a thread, but I have been lucky and not broken a thread when shaking. I was on the list many years ago and just recently came back to lace, I am a lurker but thought you could relate to my little story. I still have a binder with copies of all the good info I had gleaned from the list. Cherre in the beautiful starting a little early getting hot California desert. I think the idea of commemorative bobbins and possibly accessories like pin pusher/pin lifter/divider pins/etc?? Maybe the accessories are over the top but just an idea, I think the prospect of getting every member to contribute to a lace panel (might be a very LONG panel) would be difficult considering the varying skill and would be difficult considering the varying skill and experience of our members. [lace] Re: language of lace; location of archives
As a rank beginner, I haven't contributed much to the list, but I will make more of an effort to contribute as I can. I'm just so inspired and in awe of the knowledge on this list, and so enjoyed meeting fellow Arachne-ans at the IOLI convention in St. Paul last summer. In the discussion of lace terms in multiple languages, someone mentioned a lace glossary on the arachne archives. How does one access these archives? At the convention, I purchased several books in German and could definitely use help in deciphering some of the information. [lace] Translating the Language of Lace
Two things, first for those where English is not the first language, may I suggest doing what my cousin Ellen and I do. My German is poor, and her English is worse. So she speaks and writes to me in German, and I speak and write to her in English. We each have our little yellow dictionaries, and we get along fairly well. I would suggest that anyone who is at a loss to write the term in English, write those terms in the language with which they are most comfortable. It is probably the most efficient way of doing things. Someone on the list will probably be able to translate it for the English speakers. And sometimes one can figure out what it means from the garble Google puts out. As for books and the like, I urge anyone struggling with foreign language lace books to try to find a copy of the International Lace Dictionary, last published in Gent in 1998. Edith Spee is the first listed Author. Jeri recommended it back in 2006 or so. It is not easy to find, but it is a great resource. I discovered it when I was trying to translate Ulrike Lohr Voelcker's fantastic beginner's manual. I can sort of do the German, especially armed with a dictionary, but there were words that didn't translate, that I couldn't find, or that simply didn't make sense. At that time there was no translation. Then Holly Van Sciver suggested the dictionary, and everything fell into place. All the missing words were there. It may not be needed for histories of lace, but for manuals it is invaluable. One source lists its locations as the Library of Congress, someplace in Holland, and one other European place. I do not find it on inter library loan. But I bet there are lace groups with libraries who have it in the collection. There is one copy for sale at Amazon.co.uk Wouldn't be surprised if IOLI has a copy. Certainly for those whose native language is not a common one, like Hungarian or Finnish, it would help in translating most of the lace books that exist. An article in the Weekend Financial Times, at present on line at http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/1b3218fe-8717-11e2-bde6-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2NvNh cA53 gives an interesting insight into how designers, High Street and couture, are using lace now. Obviously machine, but it may inspire one of us to wear something. Clare Brown of the VA (where the Treasures of the Royal Courts exhibition of course includes lace) talks about ruffs, illustrated by one worn in a Tudor portrait minature, and one worn as part of an Alexander McQueen model! It finishes with a glossary of types of lace, useful to us because it's how the terms are used by the fashion industry, ie the users, not by us, the makers. Re: [lace] lurkers and posting
Dear Ayla, and other newbies to the list... When I first joined Arachne, I had only been making lace for about six weeks! However, I had a medical crisis that confined me for another six weeks, so I could not go to guild meetings to continue my lessons. (Note to guilds... Have an outreach volunteer for just such an emergency!). However, after going on-line and discovering Arachne, I posted, had an avalanche of responses, made a dear friend of another (seasoned) lacemaker merely 40 miles away (over the mountain), received tons if help, and the rest is history! This list is definitely a huge boost to newcomers... But only if you post! Be careful not to reveal email address or mailing address in a post to the list, but if you give a general region and the country you're in, then chances are you can eventually find a mentor, as I did. Well, since Jeri has got so many of the lurkers out of hiding and some of my old friends are posting, I had better come out too. I'm Heather Muth and have been with Arachne almost since the beginning. I've lurked for many years now. Tamara, I'm so sorry to hear of your husband.Like Tamara, however, it was trauma that made me step into the background. It was about 12 years ago that I became ill, 11 years ago that my husband started his affair and 8 years ago that we separated. I am now quite happily divorced. I've focused more on my embroidery since then, although I still love the lace. And for those, like Bev Walker, who may remember my children, my daughter has been married for over a year (I know, right!) and my son is a student at the University of the Fraser Valley, as am I. I can't believe that Arachne is 18. It doesn't seem that long.
