[lace] Volunteers, Lace Newsletters, Lace Study Aids

2016-12-16 Thread cec
I am a long time member of the Washington DC Lace Guild (CRLG) and was a
member of the board (volunteering) for 15 years. I held about every
position except Secretary and Newsletter but I decided to step back as I
volunteer for many other organizations (Embroiderer's Guild and Quilt
Guild) and wanted to not be so overloaded. My lace guild has had a
problem for years getting volunteers and once we get one they work for
many years and then like me need to take a step back.

Although we have been trying for years to get younger members, our
membership is aging out. Also, many members work full time and don't
have the time to volunteer often. I have found this to be true in all
the "guilds" I belong too. My Embroiderer's guild hasn't been able to
get a secretary for many years. I am on the board of all the guilds I
belong to, except the lace guild now. I have also been on committees
for national seminars and conventions for EGA and IOLI. My Washington
guild has hosted three IOLI conventions since 1980 and I worked on two
of them.

I am in a 200 member quilt guild and we still have problems getting
volunteers. So the 70 member Lace Guild is even worse. I pleaded and
begged with appeals when I was President of the lace guild and it was
still slim pickings. I dislike seeing things get less support. If
someone has a good idea to entice volunteers I would love to hear it.

[lace] torchon ground / gimp writing

2016-12-16 Thread Jenny Brandis
This is a request for help finding more information.

I am going to design a wedding garter for my daughter's May wedding, but
wanted to use torchon ground with gimp writing words like Love, Hope, Joy.
My problem is that I am not sure how or even if gimp can do cursive writing
- can you direct me to a book, website or person who may have the alphabet
and or words already sorted out?

Hugs

RE: [lace] 10th Anniversary

2016-12-16 Thread Jeanette Fischer
I agree completely with Joepie - the more the options the more the
confusion. The site is easy to navigate and gives all the information I
need. Thanks to everybody involved in this exchange - I for one appreciate
your efforts and time.

The site is lovely as it is. Please, do not over-think or overcomplicate it
with all the unnecessary bells and whistles that trouble some website. And I
think doing a video might be wasting your time unless it is to teach others
how it is done. Most of us would rather make lace than building websites.

[lace] ADMIN: Viewing Jeri's messages

2016-12-16 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

The problem with not being able to see Jeri Ames's messages does not
involve the Arachne server (i.e., her messages are not being rejected
by the mailing list). It involves the ongoing friction between AOL and
the rest of the world of ISPs.

I have a Gmail address and I DO get Jeri's messages, but only because
Bezek in Israel does not block AOL and I have created a filter in
Gmail so that her messages are not labeled spam. If you have an ISP
that always blocks AOL, her messages will never reach your Gmail, so
there's not much point in trying to create a filter.

There are two ways to see Jeri's messages that I've found. One is to
subscribe to digest. Whenever she has posted, the digest has picked up
her messages. The other is to check the archives and do a search from
time to time on her name (make sure you use the advanced search and
request messages during a recent time frame; otherwise you'll get
search results from as far back as 2003).

The archive link is https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/.
You can sort the recent messages by thread and by date.

Regards,

Avital

2016-12-16 Thread Helene Ulrich
Thank you Jenny for all the work you put into the pages for us to see
everyone's work.

Personally, I like it just the way it is. I have had no problems with
the navigation and would not have anything changed.
