[lace] Saxony Lace
Personally, I think the size is quite comparable to late 19th century handkerchiefs which is what it is supposed to be. Also, I join with Lyn in feeling that there isnât any religious theme. In fact, the lace is a tape lace that looks almost like Hinjosa in that there are no brides or spaces between the tapes. Also there are little loopty lous in some places. I also would think it's a chalice cloth. It certainly strikes me as being one. RE: [lace] Saxony lace
Devon This is another frustrating museum photo. There is not enough detail to say anything about its structure. There were some 17th c laces that looked like tape but were actually continuous/straight. The large amount of what looks like torchon ground is what makes me question the tape lace ID. Gr ! Photos like this one are basically useless, except for insurance purposes, I suppose. It's not your fault. The item is listed at 15", so the fabric is about 7" and the lace 3" wide. That is definitely not antique handkerchief dimensions. I stick with my idea of it being a chalice cover. Re: [lace] Saxony Lace
There were tape laces being made in Germany as well as other eastern European countries. I couldn't see the picture well enough to take a guess as to origin. However -- it does look like an item made for church use -- namely, to cover the chalice or the 'bread' when not being used. The cloth area did not need to be very big, and the lace is wide to look especially beautiful. Of course, there is no size reference in the picture so my guess of the size may be wrong. Handkerchiefs of the time were extremely large (15-20" of fabric) so that proportion of lace would have made it into a tablecloth. This is more likely an altar accessory. [lace] El Molino thread
Thank you Brenda! From the packaging, I would never have guessed this is Presencia thread. And I had no idea the plies could be stripped. Good to know. It is very lustrous--rivaling flat silk--& would certainly brighten a linen or mixed fiber piece. [lace] Lappets
Hi Catherine,I tried to send a private reply to your email but it was returned as it was read as Spam at your end, so here it is. Thank you for the compliment. If you look on my website, I have a needlelace collar that I made a number of years ago and I was so new to the lace that I did not realize I had to use a thinner thread for the net. Live and learn. I made that one in Gutermann 100/3 silk and I am disappointed as it seems to be more cream than white now. You probably have seen it before because I used your flower designs for it and Liz's hankie corner for the centre back. Re: [lace] Thread question
Hi Susan It sounds as though it might the same as Presencia El Molino - a 7 stranded rayon embroidery thread, on a spool rather than in a skein, each of the strands being singles yarn. Presencia El Molono: 1S/7Z - 11 w/cm. single strand 1S - 23 w/cm Rayon is a very soft thread, not a lot of âbodyâ but would make a nice gimp with cotton (or linen) as the main thread, but probably a bit soft and limp if you tried to use it alone. A single strand would be fine (mixed in with other threads) for a particular colour, but a lot of faff to separate the strands for individual use in a whole project. [lace] Thread Aurifil Mako 80
Has anyone had any experience with this new thread? Aurifil 50 is my go to thread if it calls for Egyptian 60, as it has more hand, feels more like linen. So a size 80 of the same stuff is a welcome addition. Anyone know the wraps? Itâs not in Threads for Lace 6, and there are no appendices listed on Brenda Paternosterâs site. I will be purchasing some next time I order threads from my Aurifil stockist, but that may be a while. Lyn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, where we had less than 3â, 7.5 cm of snow yesterday. Re: [lace] lappets
Janice your giraffe is exquisite! Many congratulations and you must be delighted with the result. I am faced with a similar problem in that I am currently working on an antique Point de Gaze pattern of a collar, given to me some 30 or so years ago by a Belgian lady. At that time I didn't have the knowledge or expertise that I now have but always promised myself that I would work it one day. I have been working on it for just over two years now and hope to complete it this year, but I have been faced with the same problem in that the threads that would have been used to work such a piece, are no longer available! I have been using the Brok cotton threads which are also being discontinued and which worked well for needlelace but have had to resort to the Egyptian cotton threads which are produced in quite a variety of the different gauges that are required to work the Point de Gaze, However, I find they don't have the 'body' of the antique threads and am doubtful that they would stand up to the 'wear and tear' that would be imposed on a collar? I may wear it just the ! once when finally completed and then have to resort to having it framed, as I would be devastated if the 170 Egyptian cotton that I have used for the fine net background should start to disintegrate into holes! Does anyone know what brand of thread is currently used in France to make their Alencon lace or even if anyone does actually still make Alencon lace?
