[lace] Christmas 2018 Exchange
I received a card from Lin back in November and it was filled with small pieces of lace she had made in tatting, Romanian Point, crochet, etc., plus a nice wire Christmas stocking on the front. It is on my card wreath over the fireplace in the family room. Last week I received an ornament from Mary Carey from Australia. That is hanging on my tree in the living room. It is not in usual Christmas colors, being orange and cream. Thanks to Lin for organizing the exchange again and both of them for exchanging with me. I enjoy taking part in this exchange and have been doing it for many years. Happy Christmas to all of you.Janice Janice Blair Murrieta, CA, jblace.com - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Hello everyone, I hope you're all having a wonderful week! As many of you know, I started a new job in October as the Collections Specialist at the Antonio Ratti Textile Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My job mainly consists of holding viewings of textiles with curators, conservators, and members of the public. I am also responsible for pulling things in and out of storage and carefully unpacking and repacking them. This means that I get to see a lot of incredible lace, as it makes up 5,000 pieces of our 33,000 piece collection! Today we had a visitor from California named Deborah Valoma who is interested in meeting other Armenian lacemakers in the U.S. and beyond. She is the former head of the Textiles Department at the California College of Arts in Northern California, and recently inherited a collection of over 200 pieces of lace made by her Armenian grandmother. Does anyone know of any Armenian lacemakers that I can connect her with? She would be so thrilled to get in touch. She also has a young student in her program who makes lace that she's going to put me in touch with. She was really intrigued by the "Lace, Not Lace" catalogue that was sitting out in the Ratti Library so I gave her a copy that Devon had left for us to share. How nice to be surprised with a visiting lacemaker! Thanks in advance everyone for your help! Any and all information would be great. Re: [lace] Armenian Lacemakers?
Hi Elena The lace that we call Armenian lace is also called Oya in Turkey and is also practiced in Greece and that part of the Mediterranean. There are a number of authors who have produced books on the technique. Widen you search to Mediterranean Lace or Greek lace or Oya. I know of one author who is of Greek origin who lives in Australia. Sadly all the Armenian neighbours I have do not make lace and when I asked to see their laces all I was shown was knitted lace. Re: [lace] Expanding cloth stitch with weaving techniques
Just to add to the topic, Half-stitch is a three-way weave! Re: [lace] Expanding cloth stitch with weaving techniques
An interesting idea. Whereas linen stitch is double weft weaving, tallies are single weft weaving. I have seen some pieces that are made entirely out of Talley like weaving. It is quite tight. I wonder if it would be possible to incorporate fancier weaves if you converted to Talley type weaving for those areas. Or perhaps it wouldnât work at all because tensioning is so critical with tallies. Devon - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
