[lace] The Digital Exhibition - Lace Identification: 7 examples
"I would like to share with you a link to the digital exhibition about lace identification. https://trc-leiden.nl/trc-digital-exhibition/index.php/lace-identification-7-examples The research was done by Olga Ieromina and Lisa Dilitz in the Textile Research Center, Leiden, the Netherlands. " Thankyou Olga for sharing this link with us and for presenting your research in such an easily accessible manner. I now feel that I would Iike to know much more about the development of the lacemaking machines, such clever engineering. Does anyone know of a publication that documents this?? [lace] Fwd: Bruges & World Lace Congress
-- Forwarded message -- From: phil powis Date: 10 Oct 2018 22:20 Subject: Bruges & World Lace Congress To: lace@arachne.com Cc: Conscience duly pricked Jeri. I havent yet written about the Bruges Congress and the following tour of Flanders for similar reasons to those told by Anna. The two weeks were just so rewarding and full of wonderful experiences that I havent settled down enough since returning home to Australia to be able to write about it. For now though I do thank Jeri for organising the Arachne dinner in that lovely elegant room. It wad good to meet other members and learn a bit more about them. My workshop was with Lauran Sundin, who taught 23 of us with Kim Davis tag teaching. Lauran taught the techniques she has worked out to make her spectacular gold wire jewellery. Kim has worked out similar techniques for her own wire lace work so they were a very good complimentary team. Lauran is in Australia now and will be teaching several workshops here through October and November. I have shared advice and information online and in person with Australian groups who have upcoming workshops. Precision techniques, no chatter as everyone concentrating hard, who would have thought a simple twist and cross could be so intense. [lace] Re: Lace not Lace
What a good morning - Devons nice newsy writeup of the Hunterdon exhibition hang in the Arachne digest, and my copy of the exhibition catalogue arrived in the mail (from Book Depository with free postage to anywhere in the world). I love how each artist in the exhibition has a properly informative essay to go with the pictures and description of each piece. [lace] Re: Lace not Lace exhibition
I was very pleased to meet Devon on the World Lace Tour in Belgium recently. We saw many exhibitions where lace was used as a medium/technique for creating art - quite inspiring, and it would be so good to be able to visit her exhibition at the Hunterdon. Very nice however to read the comments on the opening night in the Digest which I have just read with my morning tea. It sounds rather wonderful but I will have to make do with the catalogue which I have ordered from The Book Depository https://www.bookdepository.com/ This is such a good resource for us here in Australia as postage is free. [lace] Significant Needlelacers
Must mention Marie Laurie and Annette Meldrum from Australia. Marie has published "Hungarian Needlepoint Halas Lace: an Australian Intetpretation" after being one of the first westerners allowed into Hungary to study this traditional technique. Marie and Annette have revived the little known technique of Borris Needlelace after studying original samples at Borris House in Ireland. Their studies and teaching notes are published as "The Borris Lace Collection: A Unique Irish Needlelace". Both are lovely and inspiring teachers. [lace] Attracting interest
Devon said:- But, an interesting situation that I am encountering is that people who are not in the lace world already are more readily attracted to large pieces, and ones with irregular stitching because they can see what is happening in them. When there are exquisite small pieces that use the techniques perfectly and in a sophisticated way, members of the public tend to blank out and not even think about how the piece is made. Thus it becomes less interesting. This is so true. My lace group has demonstrated at an agricultural show and the most real interest and questions was directed at the novice working with 8 pairs and perle 5 thread. She was then able to explain that the worker next to her, doing exquisite Bucks on a velvet pillow with 150+ bobbins, was doing exactly the same thing - making a stitch with 4 bobbins and holding it in place with a pin. On a personal note, I was was interested in bobbin lace but getting started seemed too hard, the equipment needed, the seemingly intricate techniques. Then I came across the Kliots book "Bobbin Lace : Form by the Twisting of Cords' - a revelation. Garden twine wound on sticks making wall hangings and garden screens, and wonderfully clear pictures that made the stitches look easy. So I jumped right in. A year later I was making wedding lace in fine silk for my daughter. [lace] RE: [Lace] The Essay - Venetian lace
Thankyou Louise for the info and link to this interesting series of programmes about Venetian culture http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08r30n6 I listened engrossed to the programme and then went back to listen to the previous four episodes. Not making lace as such whilst listening, but knitting inspired by knitted lace. The cover picture of the May/June issue of Piecework magazine -the Lace Issue- shows wonderful pink mittens knitted in an Estonian lace stitch, lilly of the valley. My granddaughter loved the picture and 'Please knit them for me' soon followed. I am very happy to knit for my grands, especially if particularly asked, however she is only five so I thought more discussion was needed. As expected what really appealed was firstly that they were very long, above elbow length, and also that they were pink. The lace didnt seem to be important. So I have nearly finished a simple pair of long mittens in pretty variegated wool as I wont completely give in to her wish for everything to be pink. Her mum did love the lace though so they may be made yet. [lace] Lace as Art
Devon - I have been enjoying the wide ranging discussion engendered by your original questions. Did you know about the "Love Lace" competition and exhibition which was held in Sydney, New South Wales 2011/2013. Some wonderful things here, and the broadest possible interpretation of the word 'lace'. http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/lovelace/index.php/artists-works/ As for Australian lacemaker artists - Vicky Taylor comes to mind. http://www.vdtaylor.com/ Phil In Maitland NSW Australia - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. ' it seems to me that the last two times that I've sent messages to this list, they have not shown up in the archives' Hi Arlene - I have had the same experience with the last couple of messges I have sent to the lace@arachne address. They haven't appeared in the digest. Not significant enough in content for me to remember and follow through until I read your message. RE: [lace-chat] To our Aussie and NZ spiders
Thanks Liz for those kind thoughts. Huge numbers of Australians have turned out for the dawn services , one third of the Canberra population were at the National War Memorial there. Later in the morning, in even the smallest towns, there have been marches of war vets together with relatives of those who have died who are allowed to wear the family medals on the right side of the chest. Readings, speeches and wreath layings followed at cenotaphs and memorials.Sadly my own region of New South Wales, the Hunter Valley, has been devastated by a cyclonic storm this week, with lives lost and many houses destroyed. My own town has had to cancel their march as roads are flooded but even the most affected communities have managed to organise a memorial event. Luckily my own small suburb has been spared the worst, many trees down but no loss of electricity or phone connection. This afternoon pubs may be having a two- up game - betting on a coin toss - illegal on all other days of the year. - from Phil in Maitland nswphil...@live.com.au In a few hours it will be dawn in Australia and New Zealand. As the sun comes up on the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings I hope and pray that the spirit of ANZAC lives on with you all and that the dawn services take place without incident. Just a little over 20 hours from now, I and my DH will be watching the sun rise here in the UK thinking again of you all and are attending the National Arboretum to pay our respects. [lace] St Catherines Day
Our group, at Kurri Kurri in NSW, Australia, has our last lace day of the year close to Catterns day on the last Thursday in November, so we celebrate this as well as Christmas. We are together for the whole day and each of us contributes a dish for sharing through the day and I do the Catterns cakes. Also each of us contributes a small gift to a basket for a lucky dip at the end of the day. We make lace and chat about each others work, confirm dates for next years meetings and talk about ideas for our two day workshop which Ethel Zuccolotto tutors for us in June each year. It is a casual, friendly unstructured day. Ethel creates patterns for us based round a theme so there is something to appeal to differing tastes and abilities, she then comes to us each month to follow up We are exceptionally lucky in that we have the use for free of a large room with tables and chairs and adjoining kitchen at the local community centre. So I am looking forward to next Thursday - and must remember to check my supply of caraway seeds and currants for the Catterns cakes. - from Phil in Maitland NSW - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Cook's Book of Bobbin Lace Stitches
I'm sure this is something that has been discussed but I cant find it in the archives.. I have the first edn. 1980 of this book and have borrowed the revised version 2000 from the library to make notes of the changes. However I can't seem to find any!!! maybe there are things that would just jump out if I was not such a beginner. Names of stitches and page numbers are the same so I guess the differences must be in the descriptions or diagrams. Proof reading every page will take me ages but I'm sure this is something well known to you well established lacemakers. ta in hope Phil in Newcastle _ It's simple! [lace] Ligurian Lacemakers - oil painting
Rediscovered a small treasure this morning - a postcard of an oil painting Making Ligurian Lace by Henry H La Thangue [1859-1929] which is inow n the Te Puna O Waiwhetu art gallery in Christchurch, New Zealand, and - how wonderful - the gallery has some of their collection online http://collection.christchurchartgallery.org.nz/results.do?id=15742db=object view=detail I loved the idea of sitting barefoot in dappled sunshine engrossed in making something - this was years before lace was an interest.
