[lace] Another group of lace bobbins on ebay

2014-03-03 Thread Jean Nathan
There's anther lot of lace bobbins on ebay. More feasible as such that the
previous lot, but they're not for bobbin lacemaking. They could be for another
type of lacemaking, if so, what?

To me they look more like elaborate toggle buttons found on duffle coats for
instance.

[lace] Bobbins on eBay

2011-07-18 Thread J D Hammett

Hi everyone,

A little while ago someone on Arachne asked about Binche bobbins. In sorting
through some of my -extensive- bobbin collection I came accross some packs
of new Binche bobbins. They were bought a while ago for my own use but I use
the slightly heavier Duchesse bobbins. I have posted them as well as a
small pack of Beverse bobbins on eBay.www.ebay.co.uk/270783348603 is
one lot but there are several. They are new and surplus to requirement. As I
was unsure of posting this on Arachne I have asked permission from Avital to
mention this. She kindly allowed this as they are a 'one off'.

Furthermore, I would like to say how much I enjoy following the different
threads discussed on Arachne. Only one problem; sometimes lace making time
is taken up by this so less lace is being made. Also, I want to say a big
THANK YOU to Noelene Lafferty for generously allowing me to use her lovely
LACE orientated poems to raise some money for our local hospice. We have
collected £60 so far (about $90) with more to come.

Lastly a very big THANK YOU to the people who 'run' Arachne and put in a
great deal of work to keep it going; without that it would go the way of a
number of organisations at present and fold due to lack people at the helm.

Happy lace making,

Joepie, East Sussex, UK

And 39 of them are described as bone/ivory. I've just got home from
Upchurch lace Day where David Springett was the speaker and he said
that in all of his experience he's only seen ONE antique bobbin that
was made of ivory! Maybe that's why they are attracting such a nice
price.

Looks like a genuine collection of old bobbins but nothing spectacular.
Pity the photos were taken at such an acute angle - impossible to see
exactly what's in the lot, but an average of more than 10 GBP per
bobbin does seem a bit steep.

A VERY RARE CHANCE TO BUY A LARGE COLLECTION OF ANTIQUE LACE BOBBINS TO
INCLUDE 39 BONE / IVORY EXAMPLES ALL WITH THERE BEADS AND 56 TREEN
EXAMPLES ALSO WITH ALL THERE BEADS PLEASE DO NOT NOT TO MANY QUESTIONS
REGARD TO THIS LOT MY KNOWLEDGE IS LIMITED ALL I CAN SAY THERE ARE FROM
A GENUINE HOUSE CLEARANCE AND TOTALLY GENUINE VERY RARE CHANCE.

Couldn't agree more - it in my opinion. There's nothing that looks
particularly special.

I'd say the 56 wooden ones would be one to three GBP each - maximum 100
pounds the lot. Remember that on one of the antques programmes, they
couldn't even get one pound each for old wooden bobbins. Then the bone
ones - about a dozen would fetch ten to fifteen pounds each, a few maybe
twenty pounds - say 200 - 250 pounds. The remaining two dozen about 5 pounds
each on a very good day - another 120 pounds. That's 420 - 470 pounds
maximum I'd say. But the final price was over one thousand pounds -
definitely wouldn't have thought they were worth that.

What a good day the seller had!

[lace] Bobbins on eBay

2005-05-11 Thread Carol Adkinson
Hi All,

There was a report of some of Margaret Wall's bobbins on eBay several days
ago, and there are now some more of Heather Power's painted bobbins - one of
the numbers is 8191313136 - the others are the two just above it. The
bobbins are made by Stuart Johnson and painted by Heather - and I did wonder
whether the seller was, in fact, Heather - the sellers ID is Heather . and
the location is Oxford, so the mind was ticking!

But - they are beautiful, and the 'Buy it Now' prices seem very reasonable -
lovely additions to anyone's collection, so if anyone bids, Good Luck.

Hi all

I've never seen these particular bobbins before, but they do remind me
of some baffling objects that I saw at a lace conference in the Pacific
Northwest a few years ago.

I asked around to find out what they were, and had trouble believing
the story. What I was told had happened was that a woodturner had found
out about the market for bobbins, and was trying to provide a supply
but didn't know very much about lacemaking - or about bobbins, for that
matter. Therefore, when he saw a normal continental bobbin, what he saw
was a 4 long stick that went thick, thin, thick, thin, thick ... and
that's pretty much what he made, with the thick bits all the same size
and length and evenly distributed along the length. Most of us who saw
them had no idea what they were for until we were told. Needless to
say, they didn't sell very well.

Dear Lacemakers,

 (snip) a woodturner had found
out about the market for bobbins, and was trying to provide a supply
but didn't know very much about lacemaking - or about bobbins, for that
 matter.

Yes! Some years ago, an old friend kindly sent me some bobbins as a
present.

Although we're very old friends, we live a long way apart and rarely see
each other in person. My friend had only seen my lace pillow once, quite
briefly, and I think the craftsman who made the bobbins was in the same
position as the woodturner above. Mine look more like lace bobbins than the
ebay ones, but are much too big - perhaps he was working from a picture?

They've gone into my collection of curios, until I think of a use for them.

Best wishes for 2004,

I believe that in Parham House there is a picture by Joshuah Reynolds of
a Kangaroo.

The only trouble is that no one had seen a live kangaroo.

So it was painted from the skeleton and the skin.

It looks like a big mouse with too big a feet.

Just thought of that from what you said!

Well, 1950s qualifies as antique (greater than 50 years old), and that's

I'm looking for (pre-1900s) and I can sympathise with the person using
ancient instead of antique.
