Re: [lace] How do you sit?
I was not happy with the idea of a recliner settee when we first bought it, however, I discovered that I could put a cushion on my lap to angle my pillow to the right level and still have my feet up. For shortish periods of lacemaking; say around an hour or so, this is a perfect way to relax and make lace. Better than the time I was ill and thought making lace in bed was a good idea - oh the places those pins ended up. [lace] How do you sit
Hi I had my share of bad experience about sitting correctly , lately. I was concentrating hard on a Bucks Point pattern, didn't realize how the time is running away. , so didn't get up to make me something to dring. I was sitting at the endge of the chair, pulled my pillow close tpo me but bend over it more than usual because I didn't see th e pin holes. I used my magnifier but this didn't make the bending any easier. Finally my neck gave in. I have a stiff neck now for ovber 2 weeks. It is getting better but I'm still giving my pillow some vacation. That is when I also realized that the problem wasn't only sitting correctly but that I need new glasses. Hope to get back soon to my pillow. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hello all Has anyone else tried making lace standing up? When we were in temporary accommodation last year the only flat surface I had available was at kitchen worktop height which meant me standing as if I was at the kitchen sink. I found I quite liked it so now I use a chest of drawers in my work room (a.k.a. spare bedroom!) instead of a pillow-stand. I think I'd still get neck trouble if I stood at it too long but I find my knees and feet tell me it's time to move around after 30-40 minutes. A bonus is that you burn more calories standing up! I realise this wouldn't work for some of you but maybe some of the younger fitter ones. Just my two-penn'orth. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Having just done 2 days of demonstrating at a country festival, my back is shot! I used one of the available folding wooden-slat chairs, and a tablemate. It was so uncomfortable that I had to get up and walk around quite a lot, by Sat eve a muscle from my right shoulder to the small of my back was in constant cramp mode. Yesterday, I took my chair wedge and a foldable chair from home, and felt a lot better, though the muscle still hurts. Normally at home I use either my adjustable lace stand, or standard table when Sue D is here to make lace with me. We both use a chair wedge, and they do help to keep your back straighter. I have to be careful with my back and neck anyway, as both suffered permanent damage when I was hit by a car when I was 14, and I have a good massage every three weeks which keeps the worst at bay. Apart from that, I also caught a cold! Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK - Original Message - Agnes I would probably say take up smoking (LOL) so we then go and have a cigarette outside the hall!! Hi Everybody: Has anyone else tried making lace standing up? When we were in temporary accommodation last year the only flat surface I had available was at kitchen worktop height which meant me standing as if I was at the kitchen sink. I think I'd still get neck trouble if I stood at it too long but I find my knees and feet tell me it's time to move around after 30-40 minutes. Yes! Not all the time, and I do sit down in classes, but I stand up a lot. I should mention that for about six years I've had a job that required me to stand for most of the day, and I walk a lot, so now I can cheerfully stand all day without any problems. Seven years ago I'd have dropped after two hours, which just shows what you can get used to. I stand up because I have some weird thing wrong with my leg, and if I sit too long I start getting electric shocks inside my ankle. The medical profession has no idea why this is happening, but if I stand up it's not a problem, so I just stand up. I like to have the pillow at just about the right height so that when my forearms are comfortably bent, so sometimes that means jiggering around with telephone books to get the right height. I once had a lacemaking teacher who stood up a lot, too. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Yes, I often stand at the lace pillow. I have a wide ledge at a window that is perfect for a D-shaped pillow, the height of the ledge plus the depth of the pillow are perfect. If I open the window, a round flat pillow can be accommodated though I take care with the bobbins at the outside edge lest any of them whiffle off their tethers to the ground below. At other times I've put the pillow on a box on a table to stand to work. Yes, some jiggering with height is required and I like to be able to look down to the lace at a comfortable sight distance using reading glasses. I'm basically lazy, standing at the pillow is easier than getting up and down - and I can walk away any time readily. I sit a lot at the computer, prefer to avoid more sitting for lace. Lately I've been knitting (lace) and I work that standing at my window ledge too. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hello Ilse, The best place to sit is the place where you are comfortable making lace. But as a rule, I would say that you need to rest your back always on a surface (back of chair or of a sofa). You must feel your back relaxed. Usually, after making lace for a while, especially if it is a new piece where we need to put a lot of attention, we tend to tension our back little by little without noticing, and finally it becomes back ache. So, relax your shoulders and arms from now and then moving them in circles, for example, and check that you are sitting properly. (I work with a vertical pillow, so I sit on a comfortable chair and lean the pillow on the table. When I work with a roller pillow, I like sitting on the sofa, with pillows at my back and the lace pillow on my legs... that's for me the most comfortable place. I dont' know how lacers work on a flat pillow). I hope this information helps you. Best regards... Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hi Ilse and Arachnids, Normally I sit on a straight chair (dining room or kitchen type) with a small support pillow in the small of my back. The flat pillow is on a stand at a comfortable height and pulled well into me so I don't have to lean forward too much. Try to work out which the most comfortable position is for you. The most important thing is; DO NOT SIT AT YOUR PILLOW FOR TOO LONG. Get up, move about, do a few gentle stretching exercises (roll your shoulders, pull them hard up towards your ears and drop them loose, gently bend your neck back and forth and then from side to side, [DON'T roll your neck], reach for the sky and then the floor etc.) before getting back to the pillow. I have a very bad back and that is what I try to do -though sometimes the lace gets away with me and I suffer for it-. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Hi I use a 'kneeling chair' when my back is bad, this enables your knees to take the stain rather than your back. I bought the cheapest one I could find several years ago and it has been fine. The rest of the time I sit on a dining chair with my stand pulled as close as is comfortable so that I don't bend too much! Hope this helps Regards Angela (in sunny/cloudy Sussex On 14 Aug 2011, at 09:52, Ilse Depaepe bsbil...@googlemail.com wrote: Dear lacers, I need some advise on how to sit and where to make lace. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
Ilse, you have hit upon one of the most vexing issues about making lace! I am certain that the answer depends on what kind of pillow you are using, and how it is used. And, what works for one person may not work for another! (Consider, for example, how much closer a thin person could sit to her pillow that a person who carries more weight around her middle!). I have talked to a professional Physical Therapist about this. Her specialty is helping people with occupational injuries. She explained to me that my posture at the pillow was critical, that I should lean forward from the hip, not bending my back. This is easier said than done, in actual practice, and she recognizes this. She also said it is important to have your seat at a height where your knees are slightly higher than your hips (footstools can make this happen), and that our forearms should be horizontal as we do our work (not reaching up or down). Essentially, the things that make us more comfortable working at our computers should be applied to our lace work. One of the most important things is to set a timer, and to get up at regular intervals (an hour at the latest) and move around, stretching and relaxing muscles that have been used. She also recommends doing strengthening exercises on the back so that over time, it becomes stronger and able to withstand the stress we put on it when we make lace for long periods of time. The most helpful thing I have done (and I'm not kidding here...) is that I got a puppy. My DD gave it to me for Mother's Day, and while I was not sure about this new family member, I am very fond of him and find that he reminds me on a regular basis that it is time to get up and move around! Several friends have an excellent plan... they listen to music while they work, and use the old-fashioned CD player... With this, they are forced to get up at the end of each CD to change it. This would not work for me, as I like perfect silence better, and the lack of music would be welcome. So a timer is better for me - or a puppy! Good luck solving this issue! It is not something to be ignored, and you may have to try numerous things before you find solutions that work for you. Re: [lace] How do you sit?
I agree with Clay - we have our son's young cat, who brings his favourite toy for me to throw at frequent intervals, and now puts it slightly out of my reach, so I have to get up. I use one of the lacemakers' sit, kneel chairs which I got from a supplier in Wales.
