Re: [lace] Unusual Torah binder (bobbin lace)

2010-09-16 Thread AGlez
Hello all,

I have been looking at the book Carolina mentions, and what she calls
flowers are kind of dots or round motifs, with pairs entering and
going out... And these round motifs are repeated all through the lace.

At a first sight, I couldn't see anything repeated on the lace, and I
thought it was quite chaotic. But... looking carefully, we can see
round dots in half stitch, round dots in cloth st., with a ring around
the cloth st. area, and then we also see little stripes of tapes,
crossing each other in some places...

In my opinion, this is freehand lace. It has an irregular look, which
possibly means there was no pattern underneath.

Hope to have contributed a little.

Best regards from Antje, in Spain, where it is raining at last!

I have replied privately to Avital, sending her the picture with the
basic motifs that makes the ground and I understand as flowers.

If someone else is interested in seeing it. Please contact me privately.

There a Torah binder in the collection made of bobbin lace. It's undated and
only identified as Italian and sewn onto a silk backing. I've never seen
anything like it -- very freeform. I was just wondering whether anyone might
know anything about this style of lace.

I see a definite repeating pattern in the lace and my first thought was
Binche, but not wild enough for Binche and I don't see any clear indication
of 2 pairs per pin or snowflakes, but ALMOST snowflakes. It does not look
like the meandering Italian or Flemish earlier laces, but may be related to
what became the Low Country domestic laces that were documented in the Die
Linencast series from OIDFA. Was there any hint of the timeframe for the
lace?

No, absolutely no date. In fact, there wasn't even a card. My friend
was rather persistent and asked the guy at the desk. He called
someone, who said that the card was being reprinted because of typos
introduced by the printer. They brought up the old card. All it said
was Torah Binder. Italy. Cotton lace on silk fabric.

Yes! the Die Linencast series have a few of this style. Also
one of Monika
Thonhauser's folios of lace in the Salzburger
Museum has patterns in this
style--Folge 4?? (I don't have
them to hand here.)

I think to have identified the ground used in the piece. It appears on
the book by Gertrude Whiting, A Lace Guide for makers and collectors,
page. 87.

I have cut out the basic motifs on the picture for a better
identification: 2 flowers with different centres, one in cloth stitch
and the other half stitch, the petals are holes, surrounded by little
braids in cloth stitch.
I am quite sure that the piece is worked as a freehand lace based on
Trentino Stitch.

It would be more difficult to establish a date for it, at least me.

[lace] Unusual Torah binder (bobbin lace)

2010-09-14 Thread Avital
Dear spiders,

I was at the U. Nahon Museum of Italian Jewish Art with some fiber
enthusiasts because I'd heard there was some lace in the special
exhibit that just opened in August. There a Torah binder in the
collection made of bobbin lace. It's undated and only identified as
Italian and sewn onto a silk backing. I've never seen anything like it
-- very freeform. I was just wondering whether anyone might know
anything about this style of lace.

I was very fortunate that they let me take photos, despite the fact
that they had a photography forbidden sign on the desk. Hey, it
doesn't hurt to ask! I asked the man whether it might be possible to
buy a photo of this lace, since it was forbidden to take photos. He
said it was fine as long as I didn't use a flash. So here are a larger
shot and a detail.

I also photographed carvings, ketubbot (marriage certificates), and
the old Italian synagogue, which is still in use. I haven't processed
all my photos yet, but here are some shots of the synagogue interior:
