Re: [lace] lace photos

Some of the patterns are lovely, and I noticed that some prickings are marked
ROK. I think that is a Spanish lace organisation or is it a pattern producer?
Are these patterns available in the UK? Maybe they belong to a Spanish lace
organisation.

2013-04-19 Thread Ayla Middleton
Thank you Clay and Joepie for the advice on wire lace. I'll have to be
brave and just start trying I think.

As for attendance at lace days and online shopping, two books purchased
from roseground just arrived with a pile of fair brochures attached to
the invoice. I'd love to attend but flying to England is a bit much
when I have difficulty making it to lace days out of my city in new
Zealand! But as a young one I do know I need to make more of an
effort to meet other pacemakers and get to know the community.

Hi Arachnids,

Firstly my thanks to Lorelei for the inspiring lace webpages. They are
lovely.

Secondly, There seem to be fewer Lace days and fairs in the UK as Sue said.
The reason for that is probably not just the fact that people are using the
net, but also that the people who used to organise them (and note here that
it often has been the same few people taking up the work of putting these
things on) tend to be getting a little older. Younger ones may not have the
time nor the inclination (No time? Shy? Not feeling 'up to it'?, etc.) to
take up the mantle.

Thirdly, I have used to the stiffen the edges of lace; spangle wire (24 and
26 gauge), different sizes fuse wire and millinery wire. Spangle wire and
fuse wire don't rust. Millinery wire which is cotton covered steel will rust
if in damp surroundings; spangling and fuse wire are brass/copper based and
cause fewer problems. They look pretty in the edge but they will tarnish and
may discolour the lace on the edges in the long run. Stainless steel wire,
difficult to get hold of and a nightmare to handle as it is very springy,
discolours less. Sterling silver wire is expensive.

I tend to use short pieces (enough for a section such as a petal or a
butterfly wing) with only the ends wound onto a stout bobbin. These curled
up ends will be discarded. Put as few bends, windings and kinks in the wire
between the bobbins at the end as possible, any unnecessary bends etc. can
cause kinking which is particularly difficult to remove. So handle gently
and bend gently to the shape needed as you work the wire into the lace.

Hope that helps.

Happy lace making,

Joepie, East Sussex, UK

It is unfortunately not an isolated problem. It is happening in a lot of the
creative arts. In defense of the younger ones though, as I'm 40 and have
earned my stripes in the business world, I know that sometimes it is difficult
to get others to hand over the reins. It is often frustrating to see things
slow down but not be allowed to do anything about it. I know it is almost
always easier to do it yourself when you have been doing something for some
time, but could I encourage everyone to take a younger one under their
wing, by force if necessary, and plan for them to succeed you. Please don't
see them as a threat or taking over, but as a plan for longevity. It is vital
for the survival of our craft and the diversity of creative arts in our
societies. New blood and new ideas and sometimes new ways are good things.

Re: [lace] lace photos

2013-04-18 Thread Jacquie Tinch
I suspect that it is a combination of things, and the lack of organisers is
almost the least.

One of the main problems is that there are far fewer suppliers, and with the
cost of transporting their goods most of them are not willing to/can't afford
to attend lace days and fairs where they are not even going to cover their
costs so there is now a small core of them who are at nearly every event over
quite a large area and it is unusual to find anyone else. It is only the very
largest fairs who are still able to attract a wider range of them.

Related to this there are also fewer lacemakers (and this situation will
continue until we can get more and younger people enthused), at the moment
possibly with less available money, and they know they are going to see mostly
the same suppliers so why bother to go to the lace day or fair. If they do go
it's to meet friends and chat, not to buy from those same suppliers, which in
turn makes the suppliers less likely to attend that event again. A real vicious
circle.

Add to that the cost of venues and insurance is going up (although cover for a
UK lace day is free to Lace Guild members), making it more of a gamble for the
organisers that they won't be out of pocket at the end of the day.

Many of the events in Spain at least have some back up support in the way of
venue and/or finance from the local government, because the Spanish authorities
take their lace heritage more seriously than their counterparts in the UK.

we seem not to make such large pieces as your Lacemakers - it was lovely to see
the jackets in particular. We seem to have less and less lace days now than we
had a few years ago, I think it is because so many people buy online supplies

 wouldn't the half-hitch cause problems?

Absolutely, Ayla! Using wire requires a special bobbin. There are a number of
different types, designed to meet the various weights (sizes) of wire in a
project. You will never want to put a hitch on wire... It will crimp and
never straighten again.

Sorry I can't provide more information but I have only had a tiny exposure to
wire lace... Enough to know the challenges!

Thanks Lorelei... I may just have to make the edging again sooner rather than

To get the WHOLE STRING (3 lines) in easily; Just mark it by rolling your

appears. Next paste the whole string into the address line on the net and
hit return. That should get you there without too much trouble.

diameters, depending on the wideness of the lace to be worked. Usually
we support them against a wall and/or a table.

In Galicia (north of Spain) varies slightly the shape, being more wide
and some times half bolster pillow, with two sticks on the top to better
support and recline on a table.

In the South West of the country lacemakers who work tape laces, they
use a shorter bolster pillow, similar to Italian and Slovenian ones with
a horizontal wooden support.

Nowadays polystyrene is also very often used, overall when a large shawl
or runner is in process, as well as round pillows.

All weekends in Springtime and Summer you can find lace days all over
the country sometimes in little villages, where it is usual to find a
Civic centre where aged people make laces as a pastime.

Here there is another link to another lace day, this in Alcanar (Valencia)

I'm sure our Spanish lacemakers will join in this discussion.

Re: Spanish Lace Pillow Re: [lace] lace photos - what is it?

2012-05-02 Thread AGlez
Hello all those interested in Spanish lace,

Sorry for not having got in touch before. But I have a good excuse: I have
been at the Diada of Arenys, and afterwards took a few days off at the
Mediterranean coast.

As Carolina has already told you, in Spain there are now so many lace
meetings, that it is sometimes difficult to choose which one to attend. Not
all of them are interesting. It all depends on what you are looking for.

The Diada of Catalonia is, evidently, the most interesting of all, not only
because of the number of participants, but also because it has an
international presence. For example, in Arenys we could see an exhibition
of important lace centers of Europe, such as Peniche (Portugal), Bobowa
(Poland), Idrija (Eslovenia), France (sorry, but can't remember now which
lace center was there!). And from Spain, our most important lacemaking
centers were there: Arenys de Mar and Arenys de Munt (with a long tradition
and a museum), L' Arboc (also long tradition, specific type of lace and
also a museum) - both in Catalonia-, Almagro (also long tradition and a
museum), Camariñas (also long tradition and museum)...

Apart from this exhibitions, and conferences and courses held in Arenys
along the whole week, the meeting itself gathers thousands of lacers from
all over Spain. They sit at those big tables you have seen in the pictures,
and make lace. Each group of lacers brings their best laces with them...

But... not all lace meetings of Spain are the same. You are only seeing a
selection of laces in these Picasa albums, usually the best pieces. But,
normally you only see lots and lots of torchon and not so well done works.

Something I like at the meetings is that there are many selling points:
here you can buy many things you don't easily get in your local shops.

I am going to write a short text about The Diada in my blog. Coming soon.
I will tell you about it, so that you can read and see.

Hope this answers some of your questions about lace in Spain.

Best regards from Antje, in Guadalajara, Spain.
