Funny enough that's sort of how the aftermath feels like too.

I'm numbly upset but no great passion - all a bit vague really, bit like
the match :)

Agree about Bamford, and there's the perennial LB issue :)

But for all that I think that we are talking about reinforcements rather
than surgery.

As for PL speculation after Sunday - I'd suggest we get it all in now
because our track record says that we'll be on full Championship
speculation next week :)

For the even more defeatist bit: I'm sure that Kev is right - but I worry
that if we don't go up this year then we will lose too many PL standard
players this summer and then we would go up next year with a (admittedly
good) Championship level squad and poor old Farke would find himself in the
same position as he was in with Norwich ie going up to come straight back
down again.

I might be kidding myself but I think our current squad doesn't need any

2024-04-14 Thread Damian WALSH
I think that Farke has been brilliant and I hope that he long continues to
be so for Leeds United.

But I'm pretty sure that the dropped points these last matches are down to
him and not the players. They are good enough to go (& stay) up but they
need to be let off the leash because they're not good enough to play with
the metaphorical hand tied behind their back. The team has got to move up a
couple of gears and the handbrake has to come off (preferably the other way
round or there'll be a horrible smell of burning) - that's almost certainly
down to the manager ...

BTW I don't want to lose any of the players - I've even warmed to Firpo :)

H. I don't know all the ins and outs of the rules - but would we not
have risked FFP sanctions if all those players hadn't been offloaded?

With the possible exception of Tyler Adams I don't think that we've missed
any of them anyway - I can barely (ie "can't") remember who they all were
anymore... I like our current team a lot more than I liked the team that
finished 22/23 that's for sure.

We may regret like hell the wasted first 5 or 6 games but I think there
were other reasons for that than solely the exit clauses.

As you say MOT :)

2024-04-10 Thread Damian WALSH
Don't get frustrated with Cree & (especially) Georgino losing the ball. A
mild grinding of teeth will have to do :)

If they're losing the ball then they're doing their job trying to provoke
something and we've got to accept that it doesn't come off every time.

However the number of times they lost the ball because they ran into each
other or another Leeds player (Firpo featured several times here) was
indeed annoying.

As for Gray - why wouldn't Rodon pass to him? Was it "instructions"?
Whatever, by half way through the 2nd half Sunderland were completely
ignoring him because they knew he wouldn't get the pass - it gave them an
extra man to crowd out the centre. Poor Gray spent most of the 2nd half
stood on his own, arms outstretched waiting for the ball that never came.
It's almost like Farke says "give it to Cree or Rutter lads and watch them
do something"...

Dave - you do indeed make your own luck. All those times when we've
"unluckily" lost when in actual fact there's either been something not
quite right with us (in our heads mostly) or the other side have made more
"luck" than we have (Thessalonika anyone?), but last night the belief and
the will was there - really Leicester can't complain.

This is what they mean when they say that good sides win even when they're
not the best team or they're playing badly.

Lose one now and there won't be time to get in the right quality
midfielders/ full backs. Of course if we are pursuing players at the
moment, I'm hoping it's because they're already funded and we don't need to
sell (at least in this window).

All in all I don't want any of those 4 to go...

[LU] nonLU Northern Soul at the Proms

2023-08-26 Thread Damian WALSH
Did anybody watch/ listen last night? I did, in a post-victory good mood,
and it was alright - but to me the singers were lacking something (Soul!)
and never quite matched the music.

Then the sight of all the old, fat guys dancing in the aisles soured the
mood a bit further because they could have been me :(

Anyway - up early for first training session of the season this morning. My
season starts next week though I'll miss the first game because I'm
travelling for work. Do we have any listers in Jutland?

[LU] Transfer policy

2023-08-22 Thread Damian WALSH
I previously said I don't entirely blame Orta for last season's debacle -
and I don't, he really doesn't deserve half the shit he gets - however, he
had many more misses than hits, which in actual fact is pretty par for the
course for Leeds.

Is one of the problems our underlying strategy?

Looking back over my lifetime the biggest successes we have had in the
transfer market were the grizzled old-timers: Bobby Collins, Gordon
Strachan anyone?

We've also had success with players who were at least mature when we bought
them: Johnny Giles, Gary McAllister, Allan Clarke and so on

I can't think of many examples of us buying young first-teamers that were
unequivocally successful.

Why do we waste our time buying for the future when the future is sackcloth
& ashes?

Re: [LU] Orta gone

2023-08-20 Thread Damian Walsh
Going through 6 months list backlog, and in the light of some of the
(frankly) crazy stuff that I've seen on other forums, this posting is worth
responding to

Why the fuck does/ did Orta get the blame for this? Surely the Yanquie
49ers were already pulling the strings and there was no way they were going
to approve sacking Marsch until it was far far too late. Maybe you can
fault Orta for not resigning in November, but even so - my take is that the
49ers were, and still are, 99% responsible for last season's debacle and
this season's shit show.

Thank God for Orta & Radz for making sure that the club remains financially
viable and it won't be their fault if we eventually end up with another
Bates!

Damian

PS no reflection on Matt's post, I'm "going after" the Radz & Orta fucked
us up when the 49ers were there to save us" brigade. FFS - does Orta love
over-hyped and over-priced American players (buy 10, get 1 who can play)
more than his job?

Re: [LU] Wilderness years

2022-03-08 Thread Damian Walsh
My last game that year was West Ham at Upton Park where we amazingly
(because it was completely against the run of play) lost 4-3. We should
have lost 4-2 because they scored their 4th goal in the 89th minute and we
only had 2, but Bryan Flynn, obviously pissed off(*), took the ball from
kick-off and strode it through the entire11-man WHU team to score. One of
the best individual goals I've ever seen and one that Maradonna made a pale
attempt to copy 4 years later in Mexico. I was in the Upton Park South
Stand, home of the Tinies (avr age 14, evil as fuck), and nearly gave
myself away by not applauding the Mighty Flynn as all the WHU fans did.

Apart from going down, the other memories of that year were the scurrilous
songs about Argentina that are unrepeatable nowadays.

(*) was it because we were losing or was it because it was Trevor Brooking
who scored? Either reason is complete justification :)

After 2 matches CF are still above PSG, first time in 50 years that a newly
promoted side have won their first 2. Lyon next.

I don't know what Messi is earning at PSG, but his last reported "wage cut"
figure at Barcelona was more than 3 times CF's entire annual budget (last
year) so the only conceivable way for him into the club would have been to
buy it :)

Talking of buying, if I go this year then I'll almost certainly have to buy
my own ticket - something I've only done twice before in 20 years of going.

I must admit that I've been feeling very nervous for the past month or so.

But how much of that is due to nearly all the other Premier League teams
appearing regulary in the press, some more than most, all of them featuring
marquee signings(*), or ambitious new managers or other reasons why they're
going to finish in the European places. From the coverage it wouldn't be

So let's relax, calm our nerves and remember it's all only hype. This

Re: [LU] Leedslist Digest, Vol 133, Issue 3

2021-07-14 Thread Damian Walsh
Nice to have football on the list :)

Sterling was fouled, he didn't dive, he had his leg clipped at speed and he
went nose first into the turf like you'd do at school if one of your mates
clipped your leg running to get into the dinner queue. It was a clear
penalty. But why didn't Kane get one earlier in the same game for being
hacked (rather than clipped) down?

I watched that match in a bar with no sound on the telly. My impressions
from purely the images was that the Danes were quite a dirty team and that
they had more than one cheat playing for them. Imagine my surprise to read
the English press next day and find out that it was the poor plucky Danes
who were cheated out of the match by the evil English...

I see that we've made one or two signings. I'm surprised to see that
Harrison's fee is reported at 11M because I'm sure that 20M+ was being
bandied about last year.

Are you sure there's not a time lens distortion there? At Tottenham it was
3'6 too at that time (1'6 for a reserve match - the only ones I went to on
my own) but that was for boys. It was still 17 1/2 np after decimalisation,
still for boys. I'll ask mi dad but I think adult prices were round the 8
or 9 shillings mark.

Did you grow up in the summer of 1971? Did you go back to Elland Road in

Funny stories no, but memories yes.

I used to live near to White Hart Lane and after football matches we'd work
through the thousands of discarded cigarette boxes in the hope that we'd
find a cigarette or two that we would then try to sell. I only remember
being successful once. For the rest of that 1971 football season though,
we'd ask the people coming out of games if they had any old pennies they
didn't want (and couldn't spend). However for a few months you could
actually still spend them in multiples of 6. We'd easily make a good
shilling each at the start because nobody begrudged the odd penny that they
couldn't spend to little kids.

However, the happy memories of that Spring were soon overshadowed by West
Bludy Brom.

Re: [LU] VAR for offside

2020-11-16 Thread Damian Walsh
I'm coming a week late to the party, sorry for that..

First of all I think that Ed is spot on. Cricket has got it right and
football hasn't and football needs to swallow its pride (sic!) and copy a
winning formula - especially including only invoking VAR if the ref is
"challenged" by a team captain for a perceived injustice.

However I'm less in-line (sorry) with Kev's original post, if only because
the offside line for Bamford's disallowed goal seems to compare Bamford's
T-shirt line to the defender's body line (see the freeze frame on
Facebook). So comparing apples to apples, Bamford was not offside!

God I hate international weekends :)

[LU] Which Lacoste?

Many thanks to the match report from our resident Bordeaux expert, it rally
makes you feel good to be a Leeds fan!

However - I read in the Grauniad that Bamford was going to celebrate last
night with a bottle of "Chateau Lacoste"...

... Now was it Grand Puy, or was it Borie?

We're playing for the win - every match; Add it all up and we're Champions.

We've got a good team with fantastic individuals, but better than that -
the sum is greater than the parts..

We're not going to piss this league of course. But we're much much better
than average and that will show over the season.

I'm actually with [what we all assume is] Bielsa's position here. By all
means buy one or two or a few good players as part of "general
improvement", but don't go anywhere near either breaking the bank or
breaking the current team.

We've already had Bielsa's revolution - now it's time for evolution.

I always remember from my Shoot Leeds United wallchart of 1975 (or maybe it
was the Daily Mirror) that one of the factors of the 73/74 title was the
fact that Leeds used many less players over the year than anyone else (14
sticks in the memory but I've not checked).

.. Of course it helps that the 14 were all better players than anyone
else at the time :)

I don't know if "wiser" is the right term but I certainly hope that the
lessons of last season are learnt. Which starts with the transfer window
and the recruitment policy that we follow.

I don't know if it's a good idea to talk in terms of "we need x defenders,
y midfielders and z attackers", but I do think that it would be nice for
the club to at least tacitly admit that we need to strengthen in some areas
and to act accordingly.

Re: [LU] Now what

2019-04-24 Thread Damian Walsh
Clear analysis but there is a lot (OK some...) I don't agree with :)

First of all I think that Douglas has to go - he was a great statement
signing but Wolves didn't get rid for nothing and it's not worked for him
or for us. So I wish him all the best and every success but somewhere else
please. For LB Alioski + a youngster as cover/ competition. BTW I think
that Alioski will continue to improve as LB or WB but if his position is
attacker or attacking midfielder then he's a luxury we can't afford.

I play football in FR and the good teams (actually "team") that I've played
for will always prefer a holding midfielder (in Eng. - a constructing
midfielder in Continental) to a flair player like Saiz. I suspect that
Bielsa always wanted to play Philips & Forshaw together as the constructing
bottom apexes of an attack minded W formation (hope that's understandable)
but it's not worked. If Philips has been a revelation this year, Forshaw
has been a disappointment. even though Rich Walker sees a player there. The
obvious answer is Philips & a committed Paul Pogba :) but in the real world
I think that we have to give Forshaw another year.

Hernandez needs to 1. Add consistency to his game & 2. Have more confidence
in his team mates. For me it stood out like a sore thumb on Monday that
Hernandez's "big fish/ little pond" impression was (being polite)
counter-productive. Hernandez is not Gordon Strachan and he should be
asking himself why!

Same for Jansson - I think that he should take some lessons from Cooper.

Up front though is where our major failing this season is. And if Bamford
is the solution then we've not understood the problem. A competent but
limited midfield (such as ours) needs a highly mobile and always available
forward line (whether 1, 2 or 3 forwards). That worked for Roofe until his
injury but isn't working for Bamford. Roofe deserves the benefit of the
doubt for the moment but we need to get rid of Bamford and replace him with
2 players - an efficient forward journeyman (Lee Chapman?) + a hungry
youngster

I hope that every player that I've criticized will prove me wrong in the
next two games and then next year too. MOT!

Re: [LU] Galling

2019-04-23 Thread Damian Walsh
Hi Kevin,

I think that you're being wise after the event. Whether you think Roofe is
good enough or not, the facts are that he scored the goals in the first
part of the season then has been injured (and not playing) for the second
part. Bamford has indeed proved to be a gamble that's not entirely worked -
we should have bought Lukaku who is perfect for the second division :)
Douglas? I spell "sicknote" as L-I-A-B-I-L-T-Y but his failings have at
least allowed Alioski to be more productive than he ever was - the shame
was that Swansea didn't want to swap their young winger for him because I
think Bielsa would have bitten their hands off

As we're all agreed that we're fucked in the playoffs, the question is,
does this year give us the platform to go on to better things (and I only
want to go up a Champions) or will we have a hang-over for the next ten
years or so?

Re: [LU] Kids

2018-08-22 Thread Damian Walsh
What a thread to welcome us out of hibernation along with the green shoots
of the Bielsa revival :)..

1996 - had 2, now 5. They are all Leeds supporters though some a bit more
vaguely than others.

The eldest 2 have been to Elland Road but it was a traumatic match - the 1
- 0 defeat to Fulham under O' Dreary which (for me anyway) marked a
tangible starting point to our subsequent decline - so none of us have been
back since. In any case, the five year old just wanted to fight the Fulham
fans after they scored and as she's in her twenties now she'd get arrested.
She does live in Leeds though at the moment, being a post-grad student at
whatever they call Leeds Met nowadays.

Congratulations to the new father BTW!

Re: [LU] Oh great

2018-03-17 Thread Damian Walsh
2013 Barolo (Fontafredda, so cheap) for me tonight. Nice enough but more
interesting was the 1990 Armagnac afterwards.

However it is looking like it was a big mistake to sack Christiansen. And
instead of new manager effect, we have full-on instability effect - I don't
entirely agree with Rich that the players aren't good enough, I think that
they could be better, very much better, under different circumstances.

Glad that Grot scored - I hope he will get some support from the terraces.
But otherwise it is a depressing time. Who would have thought that we would
go bckwards?

Jim - how did you get your ticket for the match? That's where I was - plus
about a 100 other Leeds fans who I'd never met before but when, on the
morning of the game, they discovered that they couldn't buy tickets because
they were English, but I could because I had a French ID card we soon got
hooked up :)

I just relived that game because my veterans tea maintained its 100% record
last week with the same goal that Figo scored - a sliced attempted cross
that hit a divot and went in.

[LU] A healthy list :)

2017-11-02 Thread Damian Walsh
I'm afraid that it's time to take the road show out and start signing up
students to the list. I know that we made a conscious decision 20 years ago
to hound them off, but we didn't imagine then that one day we'd all be 20
years older and that one day (now for example) we might prefer to read
youthful gobshit (is that a word?) rather than the septuagenarian (or
worse!) stuff we have to put up with now.

Of course you reap that which you sow and we've only got ourselves to blame
for years of exaggerated respect for the elderly - but it's not too late to
change that.

I don't want to be completely ageist - after all if all goes to plan I will
be old myself one day - but can I suggest that we replace the LU/NonLU
subject prefixes with FT/AMO so that an unsuspecting lister may know in
advance if he is going to be bitten by False Teeth or All My Own...

Re: [LU] Full list of ins / outs (assiming windows closed for us ?)

2017-09-01 Thread Damian Walsh
Regardless of the high-profile departures and regardless of the sums
involved, I think this summer has, for us, completed a transition from a
selling club to a buying club.

And credit where it is due - Cellino started off that transition, and I
don't think that we would be anywhere near where we are today without him.
Football being what it is, I'm sure that one day or another someone else
would have turned up but be that as it may, we truly can hail Cellino as
the Saviour of Leeds (at least for this boom & bust cycle anyway).

I'd buy him a beer.

Amazingly enough it does look like Corbyn's time has come.

But I don't think he'll get the chance because that will take an election
