[LegacyUG] Bug in new version of Legacy?

2006-08-28 Thread Kevin McMillan
I downloaded and installed on my laptop the latest version (6.0.0.108) using the Update function under Legacy News. Now when I click on a husband or wife's name under the Family tab, the Individual's Information box will open but only the person's events are shown. The information in the top half of the box, (Given Name, Surname, DOB, ... etc) is missing. This does not happen on my desktop computer that I have not upgraded yet. Any ideas? Anyone else having the same problem?

RE: [LegacyUG] Bug in new version of Legacy?

2006-08-28 Thread Robert Carneal

Not me, not yet. Hmm,
before I install a new version of Legacy, I delete the user files. Oh, I save
them somewhere else first, but I do take them out of the Legacy directory so
Legacy will rebuild them anew. I wonder if that had any bearing on this?

[LegacyUG] The Americanisation of Legacy?

2006-08-28 Thread Dave A

Does anyone else think that Legacy is going down
the path of the majority of other available FT programs by becoming more and
more Americancentric?

The latest update include lots of things to do
with American counties etc. There is even abutton in the form of the Stars
and Stripes !!

In my particular tree everybody is either British
or Australian.

Legacy is now suffering from bloat and this could
be the reason for the bugs etc.

I have been using Legacy since Version 3 and up
till now I have been very happy.

I left FTM and switched to Legacy for the same
reason.

If only Legacy could have made a lot of this
*extra* stuff optional !! Alas that is not so (sigh)

Might be time to look at a program more
Britishcentric !!!

Time to do some research.

Thank you for puttin up with my rant.

Sherry,
I downloaded the latest update and didn't have to
unlock anything. It went directly to the Deluxe

had to unlock the deluxe features. I didn't have to do

I'd be checking whether you have more than one copy

program actually installed into a different

 something else caused it.

Normally you'd have to uninstall the program and

Dave, I have some sympathy with your point of view and the request for
some of the features to be optional has been made before. I do have some
American and Canadian relatives in my tree but my use of Legacy for
searching these is limited and the DNA part I am not likely to use at all
(it seems to be too intrusive to be quite British!).

Although the size of the program is not yet overwhelming, I have just
checked and my Legacy file is in excess of 1 GB excluding pictures
although much of this is due to web pages. This is before the latest
update which I have yet to download and at some time I guess I will
receach a limit.

Just as a matter of interest you are not related to any Aitchison's in
Hastings are you? I'm not but a friend with that name lived there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree chart problem

2006-08-28 Thread lkosloskey

Cathy,

I tried both of your suggestions with no success. I also checked the FGS for
my grandparents and the Ancestor book and Grandma showed up in the proper
location. It seems to only be the pedigree chart that won't show her in the
proper order.

Since I have very few pictures of anyone past my great-grandparents, I guess
I'll stick to a four generation chart.

Thanks for your response.

Hi Lowell,
No problem here.
Have you tried resetting the report and trying again? (See Reset button on

Or delete pedigree.usr which should amount to the same thing but
sometimes the Reset doesn't seem to work.

RE: [LegacyUG] Census tracking

2006-08-28 Thread Ivy Murphy

Hi Michele

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I
saw your posting and studied how to adapt it to my mostly UK census records and
now thanks to you I have very quickly managed to tag everyone in my 4500ish
records that are missing census records. I have to say when it was time
to untag everyone in the second search my heart was in my mouth in case the
tags I wanted went as well, but they didnt.

Now all I need is that Legacy would show
all 9 tags in the family file at the same time and life would be perfect. I
have previously tried building a matrix in Excel but then of course I would
forget to update it this way when I enter a census record I simply have to
click on the coloured box to remove them from the list and then go to the next
tagged record with the arrow keys at the bottom of the family file, any new
people I can put the rainbow up for until I have found them, hopefully this
will help to focus my attention (I need it)

This is the way I use to search for people that need to
looked up on the 1930 Census:

1) Create a detailed search with these conditions and
use the create list option

 1st - birthdate before 1/1/1930

 2nd - birthdate after 1/1/1850

 3rd - death date after 1/1/1931

2) In search list, select options then advanced
tagging andtageveryoneon the search list with a tag number
that you are not currently using.

Now you should have everyone that could have been alive for
the 1930 Census tagged.

3) Create another detailed search with these conditions and
again use the create list option

1st - tag number equal to tagged

 2nd - event date after 12/31/1929

 3rd - event date before 1/1/1931

4) In the search list, select options then advanced tagging
and untag everyone on the search list with the tag number you have been using.

Now you should have everyone the could have been alive for
the 1930 Census where you don't have an event in the 1930's for that
individual. This isn't perfect, but it will

give you the majority of people that you need to look for in
the 1930 Census.

The best solution is to indicate the census year in the
event description, then you can search with the tag number and an event
description that contains 1930. When Legacy

added the description field, I took the time to add the
census year and state to the description of all my census events (for example
1930 Indiana Federal Census).

I hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] creating ancestor report

2006-08-28 Thread Joan and Bill
I am having a devil of a time trying to create an ancestor report for only
one line of my tree. I would like to share my research with another family
member who doesn't use a computer, so I must print out the information I
have. I want to include all the siblings, spouses, children, notes, and
sources for this line, but I don't want to include other branches of the
tree. Could someone help me with this? I find the tagging system very

RE: [LegacyUG] The Americanisation of Legacy?

2006-08-28 Thread Support
Dave,

The US County Verifier has been in Legacy for a long time now (it was
released during the life of Legacy v5). We have many different countries
represented in the Geo Location Database and the Research Guidance. We
currently have volunteers translating Legacy into 13 different languages -
in fact you may have noticed when you did the update that the Danish (Dansk)
version of Legacy is now available!

You don't have to download the Geo Location Database files if you don't
wish. The US County Verifier is a fairly small file and is invaluable for
those doing any research in the US to make sure that the locations are
placed in the correct historical county.

There is an option under the Options window to change Legacy to English - UK

Thanks for using Legacy.

I use only the year in the Event, as it's easier to see what Censuses I
have found and what I'm still looking for. I use the actual date entered
on the page by the enumerator in the Event Source detail, as it is
relevant for calculating other missing info like year of birth
(implications of age at last birthday in Jan not same as later in the
year).

[LegacyUG] Stick Drive - data and pictures

2006-08-28 Thread Mary Young

(Apologies if this is covered in the archive).
I have a 1GB stick-drive, and have transferred my Legacy data files OK.
However, moving the Pictures folder is causing a problem.
I have changed and saved the Options, Customise, Default Paths to eg.
E:\Legacy\Pictures.
But View Current List of Multimedia Locations shows all pictures
still on C:\ drive.
And Test All Multimedia Paths returns a not found message.
If I search for path for an individual picture, Legacy searches all
drives and finds it on E:\ - but only for this particular picture. It
would be a huge task to do this for every picture and document!.
Am I missing a step somewhere?
Does anyone else use their stick-drive for Pictures as well as Data?

Hi, Michele and all,

I'm a little confused-- wouldn't the date range one puts in have to take
account of the official census day? -- You posted a list of those,

This is the way I use to search for people that need to looked up on the
 1930 Census:

 1) Create a detailed search with these conditions and use the create
 list
 option

  1st - birthdate before 1/1/1930

  2nd - birthdate after 1/1/1850

  3rd - death date after 1/1/1931

 2) In search list, select options then advanced tagging and tag everyone
 on
the search list with a tag number that you are not currently using.

Now you should have everyone that could have been alive for the 1930
 Census
 tagged.

 3) Create another detailed search with these conditions and again use the
 create list option

1st - tag number equal to tagged

 2nd - event date after 12/31/1929

 3rd - event date before 1/1/1931

 4) In the search list, select options then advanced tagging and untag
everyone on the search list with the tag number you have been using.

Now you should have everyone the could have been alive for the 1930 Census
where you don't have an event in the 1930's for that individual. This
 isn't
 perfect, but it will

give you the majority of people that you need to look for in the 1930
 Census.

The best solution is to indicate the census year in the event description,
then you can search with the tag number and an event description that
 contains 1930. When Legacy

added the description field, I took the time to add the census year and
state to the description of all my census events (for example 1930
 Indiana
 Federal Census).

 I hope this helps.

Ron, Dave and Jack:

I think I am ready to follow your methods.

I just printed off an ancestor tree with TreeDraw and although the chart
looks good, all the extra commas (for locations without counties) make it
look like I made a whack of errors inputting the locations!

Unfortunately, TreeDraw v3.0 (for Legacy) can only pull from the LONG
location names not the short. :-(

So it looks like I will have to go back and amend my Master Location List
and remove the extra commas. (I know they don't push the four level method
in FTM, so over all it shouldn't make a difference right?)

For locations where you know all four levels, do you use all four or skip
counties all together? (i.e. Finch Township, Stormont, Ontario, Canada OR
Finch Township, Ontario, Canada?)

I would also be interested in hearing what other users with a majority of
non USA locations do in this situation (either privately or here).

Thanks again!

Re: [LegacyUG] Stick Drive - data and pictures

2006-08-28 Thread Bruce Jones

I use a 40GB USB drive for both Legacy data pictures (should be
similar to your stick drive, just bigger). I have over 1400 files
(pictures images) in the Pictures folder (and it's subfolders) with
no problems.

When you move pictures to a different drive or folder, you need to
tell Legacy where to look. You did this when you searched for a
particular picture. Now, Legacy should be able to find ALL pictures
in that folder without you needing to search for any more in that
folder.

I hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] icons

Hi All,

Since updating to Legacy 6 Deluxe, and current update 109, I find that
the male and female icons on the family view are switched. The men have
long hair - the women short hair. Not a big deal, but it does look a
bit strange, especially to people I send my information to. Is there
anyway of changing this? I tried reset to default but it didn't change

Re: [LegacyUG] Census tracking

Pat,

I don't use the offical census day in the event date. I use the actual
physical date at the top of each of the census sheets. The majority of the
people I'm researching where farmers in rural communities and sometimes it
took a while for the census taker to get out to them.

If you are using the official census day, just search for that day when
untagging.

Sherry, I don't think anyone was suggesting that it should not be available
but only that it should perhaps be a plug in. I would like to think that
we all agree that one of the strengths of Legacy is its flexibility but do
you and your colleagues not think that it is now becoming rather large (
particularly for people on dial up or with limited memory). I am not a
software programmer so I don't know how much of a problem it would be to do
this but other applications, eg Photoshop, seem to be able to achieve it.
BTW I don't think I've ever mentioned it but I still think that your product
is the best on the market.

[LegacyUG] Search list results sorted

2006-08-28 Thread Angela Gabbard

Hi,

I did the following

Search Misc. Search direct
line ancestors with no parents create list

I now have a list of 445
individuals. I then went to PRINT and under list report options I have
customized the optional fields to show a)relationship

b) Last name, First name

What I would like to do is have this
report sort on the relationship per generation.

I.E. great-grandparent, 2nd great
grandparent (or the other way 10th great, 9th great, etc)

Is this possible to do in Legacy?

Thanks,

  Hi Lowell,
  No problem here.
Have you tried resetting the report and trying again? (See Reset button on
lower right of Chart options screen.)
Or delete pedigree.usr which should amount to the same thing but
sometimes the Reset doesn't seem to work.

Re: [LegacyUG] The Americanisation of Legacy?

2006-08-28 Thread Dave A

Sherry,
I am well aware that the US County stuff appeared during V5. That does not
alter the fact that the program is bloated with questionable enhancements
which have been foisted upon us. Most of these enhancements should be
available as optional *plug-ins*.

I too have not yet found a program which is anywhere as good as Legacy. The
response of the development team to bugs, suggestions etc is unparalleled
but due to that fact Legacy is now suffering from trying to be all things to
all users.

Sorry for ranting.

Dave,

The US County Verifier has been in Legacy for a long time now (it was
released during the life of Legacy v5). We have many different countries
represented in the Geo Location Database and the Research Guidance. We
currently have volunteers translating Legacy into 13 different languages -
in fact you may have noticed when you did the update that the Danish
(Dansk)

version of Legacy is now available!

You don't have to download the Geo Location Database files if you don't
wish. The US County Verifier is a fairly small file and is invaluable for
those doing any research in the US to make sure that the locations are
placed in the correct historical county.

There is an option under the Options window to change Legacy to English -
UK

Re: [LegacyUG] Census tracking

2006-08-28 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
To make a short story long. On my Source for the
census I put the date from the LIST, as sent, but in
the actual Event I put the date written on the census.
It is an extra tool. An ancestor was born after the
Census date, but before the census taken date. I know
why he isn't there! the census taker got confused.

--- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My thanks for the list of the official enumeration

aside here, when I record a census
enumeration for a person, I use the date recorded

 family was counted.

This is for a simple reason. Assume the official
census date is June 1. A
family might have been living in Town A on June 1,
 but could have moved to
Town B by June 3 when they were enumerated.

These dates, like young and infant were used,
before home computers, by the LDS church, and so most
programs were created keeping these as 'non-errors',

Why change your RIN and MRIN, historically, I wrote on
a new document the RINs assigned to a person, but I am
aware that after Merges, some of those numbers are no
longer accurate. As long as each document has RINs I
know I have dealt with this. When I run out of stuff

[LegacyUG] Some ancestors not colored box at all

2006-08-28 Thread Susan Daily

I was playing around with my ancestors chart, and used the four lines
coloring for the first time. I noticed my 2nd-great-grandfather's
parents have no line coloring, even though he does. He didn't have a
child relationship set, so I put in Natural, but this didn't change
anything. There is also one other set of 3rd-great-grandparents that
have no coloring. I checked, and there is only one set of parents
listed for the ancestors. Is this a bug, or did I miss something?
[There is no coloring in either the family view, or in the chart.]

I changed every child to Natural, and closed and reopened the file. I
also reset relationships to me. Closed and reopened Legacy. Still no
change.

I am glad this method worked for you.

Hi Carol,
Unfortunately there is only one set of icons and they haven't changed
since the change from the Legacy 5 icons.

Have you perhaps changed Colour Scheme?

I note that with some backgrounds, the Male Spouse icon has shadow
behind it - or not been cleaned up as the others have. I had to use a
Virtual Magnifying Glass to see it. You must have good eyesight ;-)
If it bothers you, change the background to light grey and it will
disappear and he'll have short hair.

that the male and female icons on the family view are switched. The
men have long hair - the women short hair. Not a big deal, but it
does look a bit strange, especially to people I send my information
to. Is there anyway of changing this? I tried reset to default but
it didn't change anything. Nothing in the help file either.

Carol

Re: [LegacyUG] icons

2006-08-28 Thread Bruce Jones

I didn't notice this until I saw this posting. It is the leftmost
icon for an individual. I checked on my laptop which still has
version 101 and it is the same there. Had never noticed it.

Thanks for your responses to my report question. I'm sure they would work
nicely but Alice's 1-click method is so easy . . .

Kirsten,

Follow the steps outlined at
http://legacynews.typepad.com/legacy_news/2006/08/how_to_print_a_.html.

But between steps 1 and 2, click on the Given button in the upper left.
This will sort everyone by given name. Then follow the rest of the steps as
outlined.

Thanks,

I've been experimenting with reports and can't get what I want,so thought
I'd ask . . .

Is there a simple way to get a list of all the names in my database sorted
by first name and *then* by surname? Including RINs would be helpful. (I'd
like to see all the various Abrahams, Adams, Annas, etc.)

Thanks for any instructions.

Isn't that the sex of the spouse? I have not updated yet and under the
husband the left icon has long hair and under the wife short hair. Seems
correct to me.

RE: [LegacyUG] icons

2006-08-28 Thread La Nell Shores
I think what you are seeing is the spouse icon. It is a female (long
hair) on the husband's side and male (short hair) on the wife's
sidemake's sense to me as most spouses are the opposite sex. If there
are more than one spouse the icons show as 2 people.
