RE: [LegacyUG] Source Template
Elizabeth, Using Legacy as you do I am less than sure that the Delux version will offer you very much. The point is that Legacy is a relationship database and the delux version offers many more ways of searching and presenting the various relationships, be it in time, location, family etc. Most of these would not work properly with your set-up. I think you have sacrificed a lot for the sake of convenience of viewing everything on one page but having said that, I respect your choice and would not wish to unduely influence you. Does it allow you to show ALL the information from census records, death certificates, etc etc etc in one place, at one time, so that there is no need to be clicking boxes, opening tabs etc? I realize that the way I am doing this in the free version is probably strange but it is sooo easy for me to be able to just open the Research tab and have everything right there in one place to look at while searching online. I can see at a glance which census records I have and all the data they include, plus all the other records and their data. I can see whether I have found a service record and what it said or a birth record at Ancestry/Genealogy/Etc and what was included in that record. This saves me so much time and repetition if I am looking for additional information about an ancestor or even someone listed in the census with them, or any other ancestor mentioned in any of their records, or locations where I might find them and so on. It's all right there in front of me. I definitely don't want to be printing out a lot of the information and have to sort through it or find a place to file it. I guess I'm wondering if the deluxe version has this ability. I don't want just the 'Events' of a person's life to show, I also want all the data from all records right there to look at as I search. RE: [LegacyUG] Source Template
I agree with Ron. The way you use the system is the best for you, and the size of YOUR files is all that matters. If you wish, you can go to the Legacy main page, and read all the updates to versions 4,5, and 6. You may find none of the NEW deluxe additions do anything you need, or want. The best thing about Legacy is its open-ended platform. Hi Nancy, I've had this problem myself a couple of times now - not necessarily caused by your System Mechanic! There's a solution on the Legacy web site at http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpJetServPk.asp I got there by going to the Legacy web site (http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/), clicking on the Help Centre tab at the top of the page, then clicking on Solutions by Error Number in the links at the top of that page, then clicking on Error 3021 in the list given. I knew to to this 'cos I'd asked and been pointed in the right direction here before. :-) Essentially, run the File File Maintenance Check/Repair, but read the details on the site first before you start so you know more about your particular situation. [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator wrong...v6.0.0.117
Here is what I have. Mary had two children out-of-wedlock from two different men. Child #1 is William and Child #2 is Robert. Robert had a son named Larry. Setting relationships with William as self, Legacy properly shows Robert as a half-brother and Larry as a half-nephew. Setting relationships with Robert as self does not show William as a half-brother. Setting relationships with Larry (son of Robert) as self also creates a problem. Mary is properly shown as grandmother, but William is not shown as half-uncle and the half-cousin relationships for William's children also do not show. The good news is that I've identified the source of the problem. We know the father of Robert and that name is duly recorded. We do not know the father of William and I had left that name blank. If I add a dummy name as the father of William and reset relationships with Robert as self, the problem disappears. If I delete the dummy name and reset relationships with Robert as self, the problem reappears. It seems that Legacy cannot find the proper relationships for a child as self if one of the parents is unknown. I've only tested this with half-relationships, but I wouldn't be surprised if the problem also exists for full relationships. Can someone else duplicate this problem? Can the programmers fix the problem? Jon Raymond St Paul Park, MN Web site: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raymond/ Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? RE: [LegacyUG] Recording census records as a event,am I doing it right?
I guess technically you could say that you are doing it right if it is the way you want it recorded. grin There are many ways to record things and everyone has his or her preference. I record the censuses as events in the way described on the training video, which sounds similar to what you are doing, a different event for each year and household. I write it out once, listing everyone in the household and then use the event clipboard to copy and paste it to an event for everyone listed. I like the way it then shows in the chronology tab. I am not sure where else you would record the UK censuses, I do those the same way, it shows where an individual was at a given time. RE: [LegacyUG] Recording census records as a event,am I doing it right?
In my view, there is no wrong way Stuart. I don't have the census as an event. My events are things like Residence, Occupation etc. (ie the details of the census). The census is the source and I attach each to each of the events. I use the Source Clip Board as I always find it much the fastest way of doing things. There is nothing to stop you using it for the way you enter the details either. Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template
Hi Jean, The Chronology view can include General and Research Notes - they're just not in chronological order. Elizabeth is using the Standard edition that doesn't include the Chronology View. Cathy At 12:05 AM 11/01/2007, you wrote: Elizabeth, Maybe I'm missing something but I think what you are asking for is the Chronology tab at the top of your screen. When you click on that tab you see all the vital data events for the person's life that you have entered in chronological order. It was created for just the purpose you are suggesting... ie to look at all the data you have on that person in one place. And that is why so many of us type in all the census data or ship record data, etc into the notes section of an event and then copy paste the event (complete with source) to events for each person named. It does NOT show any data put in the notes section though, so if that is where you put everything you will have to create a few events in order to see how this works. But the copy feature of events, which as I said copies the source also, does not allow you to make the source detail particular for each person. But you don't need to do that once you are seeing everything in the chronology tab. I don't think this is a deluxe feature, but not sure. Jean Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Re: [LegacyUG] Recording census records as a event,am I doing it right?
Hi Stuart, Entering Census Events is time consuming but well worth it. I enter a census event for everyone for each relevant census. I put a full transcription in the source and in the Head of household's event. I use the Event Clipboard to copy to other members of the household. That way the Source Detail is not changed at all and so only prints once in a report. If you decide you don't want the Census Event in a particular report, you can make the Event Private in the Event Definition before running the report and don't include Private events. Hi Jon, You've brought up a slightly different take on one of the known bugs in the Relationship Calculator that is logged in the bug tracker. Why not submit your take as a Bug. [LegacyUG] Marriage events
How common is it among this group to use Events on the Marriage screen to record common activities of the marriage? For instance, I've been considering as a Marriage event our ownership of our pets. This is only one example that could lead to other joint ownership/participation events. I'm curious how common this already is, and what shortcomings or advantages other might think of the concept. Except for perhaps honeymoon or other such strictly Marriage related activities, what other events do people record in this area? Re: [LegacyUG] Recording census records as a event,am I doing it right?
I like using Legacy because most times there isn't just one right way - it's what works for each of us. I like to record each year's census records as a source for a particular name. I have the specific location and actual date written on the census page to gauge birth/death/marriage dates. Each person in the household is recorded with age and occupation, place of birth and place of birth of parents. I can quickly see who might have died or married, and the locations to which the family members moved. I usually list unknown/unrecognized additional people in the household under the detail for the head-of-house. Frequently they are connected to the family in some way I just haven't discovered. Only problem I've come up with putting such notes in the detail text source field is that I haven't found a way to search for a specific person in the source text. Using the clipboard makes it fairly simple, particularly when there is a large number of family members. I only have to enter the individual text details. Enjoy the program - it sure is the best one I've used since I switched from DOS to Windows!! Judy been using Legacy for awhile and Im wondering wether im doing it right? Im recording census's as a event, creating a new event for each year/household,its quite time consuming.Wondering wether it would be quicker to use the clipboard and record the uk census elsehwhere, how do other people record census records? Jon, I have sent a sample database to the programmers with the problems that you listed...except none of the parents is unknown. Many have expressed concern about the relationship calculator and its results being wrong but Legacy support has it on their list of items to be fixed. Hope it is soon. It is not just the half-relationships but they certainly do seem prominent. Ron Taylor Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Legacy 6.0 Deluxe has 92 features not found in the Standard Edition. RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage events
I always use the Marriage Events for things that happened to the couple or family. I have changed the Marriage Event lead sentence to read - The following events involved [couplenames] and / or their children: The only problem it causes is if you use a child of the family as the starting person for a subsequent report, because the marriage (and therefore marriage events) of their parents isn't included in the report. But as long as you are aware of the problem you can always copy the event and add it if you do start a report from a child and need the event. RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage events
I have only recently started using the marriage events and I think including pets is a great idea. I'll have to add that one. What I have used it for so far is our residences. Since we have moved several times during our marriage and to 4 different states, I wanted a record of it. I plan to attach pictures of each home, too. I have been thinking of also using the marriage events for trips we have taken. Re: [LegacyUG] Relationship calculator wrong...v6.0.0.117
I am wondering if Legacy has the capacity to calculate everybody's relationship to each other. I am only seeing that Legacy is able to calulate relationships back to a singular person. I am hoping there is a way to click on two random people within a given database to retrieve the relationship between each other. Any help? Thanks. [LegacyUG] To-Do List Ideas?
I originally had a very goal-oriented To-Do List in Legacy (i.e. Find John Jones' parents). That helped to focus on top priorities but ultimately didn't suit. Then I switched to a task-oriented format (i.e. Order Mary Cooper's probate record). That was OK for a while. Now I'm finding that although I know I ordered and searched a particular book or film perhaps two years ago to look for James Smith, I'm not sure whether I also searched for his father-in-law Henry Adams and didn't find him--or if I didn't know of the relationship at the time. Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Color coding
Nancy, The step that corrected it was when you recalculated relationships. Whenever you add new people to your direct lineage after you have calculated relationships you need to redo this step. One way to tell that it hasn't been done is the colors and another way is the relationship that is listed above the person when you view them (ie first cousin, second cousin once removed, yadayadayad) will be blank or not showing. Whenever you notice this is not showing above someone that you know has a relationship to you, then that is when it is time to recalculate relationships. [LegacyUG] TreeDraw Legacy and dotted Adoption boxes?
Hello! When I used to print a Descendent Chart in Family Tree Maker, I could have adopted ancestors appear in a box made up of dotted lines instead of solid lines (like the diagram below). | - | John Doe | - I've tried to do it in TreeDraw-Legacy, but unsuccessfully. I can't find a switch to have the program do it itself, so I've changed these boxes from a solid lines to dotted lines myself. It looks perfect on the screen, but when I print the chart all the boxes have solid lines again. I'm wondering: 1. Is there a way to have TreeDraw do it automatically? 2. And if not, is there anyway to fool TreeDraw and my printer into printing the dotted lines? Thanks! Rob Toronto, Ontario Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? RE: [LegacyUG] To-Do List Ideas?
Kirsten and Nancy I have found that I get really useful information when I run the Research Guide on each individual. Not all of the suggestions are easy for me to research or applicable but those items can be hidden from the list and other items added. Then you have all of your to-do's together and have a better understanding of what you need for each person from each repository or specific location, i.e. court house or cemetery. Besides, there is no charge for the information. Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage events
So far I have used Marriage Events for Residents Vacations On 1/10/07, Nancy Bender [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have only recently started using the marriage events and I think including pets is a great idea. I'll have to add that one. What I have used it for so far is our residences. Since we have moved several times during our marriage and to 4 different states, I wanted a record of it. I plan to attach pictures of each home, too. I have been thinking of also using the marriage events for trips we have taken.
