RE: [LegacyUG] RIN's MRIN's
Shellah, In most reports under the tab Report Options rhe choice is for RINs *and* MRINs or none. However providing you are not using the User ID for anything else it can be set to be the same as the RIN - see OptionsCustomiseOther - and then just display the User ID. I haven't checked this on Reports but it doesn't work correctly on the Indexes for web pages. RE: [LegacyUG] Print Entire Database?
How many generations are you printing in your report? Check in the Descendant Book report ‘options’ tab - just below ‘insert underlines for missing …..’ there is the option to set the number of generations. Unless you know exactly how many generations you’ve got, select All (the number 250 should appear in the box). If this is already the setting I’m not sure why you aren’t getting everyone. Re: [LegacyUG] For Geoff
Mitch, If you are still not getting the Indexes for the Family Group Sheets try using the Reset button on the Report screen to reset the report options. Then try using the Index Options button to turn on the Name and/or Location Indexes you want. The report should then include the Indexes in both the Preview and the PDF formats. The Text Format and the HTML will not include any indexes. [LegacyUG] Legacy File Extensions
I looked through the archives and found a partial answer to a question that's been puzzling me. It has to do with file extensions and windows file icons that I'm finding in my Legacy folder. Currently there are one or more windows files with the extensions FG TC and RGD in my Legacy folder. [LegacyUG] Tagging to MRCA
The following question derives from two events: (1) a recent reunion of a dozen family members some of whom didn't know each other and their relationships; and (2) the finding of several DNA related individuals. The question is: can tagging be used to find to find the MRCA [Most Recent Common Ancestor]? I would then export to a new database (or hopefully directly within Legacy 7) for charting. I know I can tag the individuals and then - with advanced tagging - tag with the same tag number all their ancestors. Re: [LegacyUG] filing by MRIN
I think it is generally that way - but of course it is your choice. My dad filed by Marriages (before computers, so before MRIN's) - and generally filed everything with that person if they had married, so that if he was looking to research one person, he had all the info together. I believe that if the person never married, (especially if died while a child) that the info would stay with the parents folder. This did, however, cause a lot of copying of stuff like a Census of the family. Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging to MRCA
Hi John, The easiest way to find the Most Recent Common Ancestor is to use the Relationship Calculator between the two people of interest (on the Tools menu). This can be printed as a simple chart and shows the line of both people back to the common ancestor. I think this is a Legacy Deluxe feature. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy File Extensions
Hi, The FG, TC, and CB files are included in the backup of your Legacy Family File. They're not crucial but if you have used the features and saved Clipboards etc, you'd miss them. They're very small files If you haven't used them but looked at the features, you well may have created the base file. ;-) The RGD file is also waiting. The base file is produced simply by clicking on the RG tab at some stage to see what's there. This one isn't backed up in the Family File backup and again, it's not crucial as it doesn't hold your actual data - but if you've used Resource Guidance a lot you'd probably want to back it up rather than start from scratch. I understand that this file can grow quite large. What is more usually saved outside of the Family File backup and multimedia backup is the .usr files in the Program folder as these hold your settings that apply to all your Family Files. Re: [LegacyUG] Homosexual Entries
Hi Jay, Currently there isn't a way to enter a homosexual relationship properly as the structure of the database assumes that all unions are male/female. You can include the partner with the wrong gender and adjust the wording in the marriage screen to fit. It will look OK in most reports that don't stop to report whether a spouse is male or female. You'll have a problem if you include his parents as he'll be reported as daughter of so it would be better to include them in the Marriage Notes or an Event. I think there is another way to semi trick the program but I don't know that it makes any difference to reports. Cathy At 07:33 AM 6/09/2007, you wrote: Please help, I am not interested in starting a debate on whether we should include homosexual marriages or not, or the moral discussion as to the acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle, but am interested in finding out how others have entered similar data. I have a close cousin, who is gay and has entered into a marriage or life partnership or any other terminology that you wish to use and would be hurt to see that I haven't included this into the family genealogy. This will be the end of this line as there is no plan for children, and accidents seldom happen in gay relationships. I just wish to enter the two as being together. Can anyone tell me if there is a proper way to enter this information? Do we just trick the software into thinking that it is a M-F relationship and then in the general notes state that is it a homosexual relationship? This aspect of life has become an identifying trait in those within this community and will give more information about the person rather than Birth and Death dates. Thanks! Jay, I have the same issue. My suggestion is to create a unique event where you give the date and explain the facts. I wouldn't use the marriage screen as the partner would then erroneously show as a legally-recognized spouse. It isn't a perfect solution, but if you explain the software limitations to the persons involved, I'm sure they would understand and appreciate your efforts to include the relationship in the family data. Hi to both I don't have an answer for you, but as the grandmother of a trensgendered child (11 years old) I'm impressed by your concern and sensitivity. Hopefully the Legacy programmers will see fit to provide for these situations. I have the same issue. My suggestion is to create a unique event where you give the date and explain the facts. Thanks, Ron. I was hoping there was some way to source them with a footnote but I guess I can't. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ronald ferguson Sent: Tuesday, September 04, 2007 3:09 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] How to source pictures? Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging to MRCA
Cathy - Thanx for the response. That works well for two people - but not trying to identify and link a dozen. Or, I'm missing something. Thoughts? Regards, John On 9/5/07, Cathy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi John, The easiest way to find the Most Recent Common Ancestor is to use the Relationship Calculator between the two people of interest (on the Tools menu). This can be printed as a simple chart and shows the line of both people back to the common ancestor. I think this is a Legacy Deluxe feature. Cheers, Cathy At 04:19 AM 6/09/2007, you wrote: The following question derives from two events: (1) a recent reunion of a dozen family members some of whom didn't know each other and their relationships; and (2) the finding of several DNA related individuals. The question is: can tagging be used to find to find the MRCA [Most Recent Common Ancestor]? I would then export to a new database (or hopefully directly within Legacy 7) for charting. I know I can tag the individuals and then - with advanced tagging - tag with the same tag number all their ancestors. However, how then to find the MRCA other than trial and error since all tagged lines will go to the most distant ancestor - not the most recent? Legacy ought to get with it, as should other genealogy programs, if we have to trick the system to record the ways things are. RE: [LegacyUG] Homosexual Entries
I am also interested in having a way to enter a homosexual partnership. I want to enter it in a way that demonstrates the partnership. I would appreciate Legacy looking into this. It now a part of many families. Thanks! At this time, the way the database is structured, linking same-sex individuals isn't possible without extensive reprogramming time. Please go to http://www.moss-fritch.com/legacy.htm for a work around. This info was compiled by one of our users. Thanks for using Legacy. [LegacyUG] Question about sorting a tree
I wanted to see if there was someone who may be able to help me get some idea of where to start with Legacy. I have used PAF for quite a few years. There was a time when I gathered a lot of GED files from the internet and connected them to my family stuff that I had, and now I have over 10,000 people. The master list seemed like a good idea to start with, trying to consolidate locations that were spelled or abbreviated. Then I have been toying with the idea of trying to go up in a family tree from my daughter to the top of the ancestry tree on all of her ancestral lines, thus getting a good inventory on who is in mine and my wife's family tree who are direct ancestors. I was thinking of going for an approach where I take my daughter's family, meaning my wife and I as parents and her as child with her siblings, none of whom are married. The next level up, I wanted the family my wife and I grew up in respectively with our siblings, and the siblings spouses, but no children. Then, following that same pattern all the way up, where I have the families with her direct ancestor in, first as a parent with children and those children's spouses with no children, and later the same direct ancestor as a child with their siblings with the siblings spouses, but no children. Then, it would give me the possibility of having a chance to see out of those 10,000+ people, who are direct ancestors. Then, I thoughtThis would be neat to really work hard on this newly formed streamlined group of people, get all the master list sorted out and cleaned up, get stuff recorded, etc. But, then it occured to me...what if I wanted to put all of this stuff back into the original huge file again...And have two files, one of the direct line, and one with more of the branches? Would that be a hassle or a simple match/merge process as long as dates of birth, parents or other important information coordinated? So, I just have two questions really: Does this approach seem to have merit, trying to get a direct line of ancestors? Is there an easy way to generate this file and will it be easy after I add information to it, to put it back with the larger file? I guess that's three questions. Thanks so much for any help or input.
