RE: [LegacyUG] WEB PAGE CREATOR

2009-05-22 Thread ronald ferguson

Ian,

Both Dennis and I find that not only does the Legacy Web creation program
change the extension in the coding it also changes the extension for the
pictures.

So, since we are all agreed that the extension in the coding changes to JPG
(and not only if the original is JPEG) can we concentrate on the pictures?

I take it that you are using the pictures generated by Legacy, that is those in
your Legacy\Web\names\pictures folder, and that in your case their extensions
remain as JPEG, contrary to what Dennis and I have found. Why there should be a
difference I cannot imagine.

The easist way to get them to work is simply to change the extension of the
picture files. This can be done using a free program called Ken Rename
available from http://pronet25.googlepages.com/home

 Thanks for your help Dennis

My web pages are held in the lagacy folder as such:

C:\Legacy\web\name\pictures\ .(the name folder holds the
individual web page HTM files and the pictures folder holds the image files)

 My web site is structred:
name\pictures\ .. (the name folder holds the individual web
page HTM files and the pictures folder holds the image files)

My problem is that whilst Legacy recognises a JPEG file and is able to
add a JPEG image to a picture gallery without changing the extension:
yet when it creates a web page with a JPEG image Legacy converts the
JPEG extension to a JPG extension. in the HTML code of the web page.
What I end up with is a web page that cannot recognise the (altered)
image as the image extension has been changed from JPEG to JPG

I am the 'admin' and my computer is called 'SUSAN' - no problem there!

Anyone any idea on what Error 3260 is ?
OR
how can I unlock whatever?

Is there a file within Legacy program I can delete, that may have caused
the problem?

This is obviously one of my Potential Problems!

Are you running any sort of Anti-Virus software that automatically
checks new or altered files for changes? It could be that your AV
software is grabbing the file for exclusive use whilst the program only
has the use of it for one record at a time.

You don't have any other programs open that might be accessing your
database? If not, try rebooting.

Tim,
OK - problem solved. Thanks for the answer. Eventually I may get the hang of

 Bill,

There are 5 tabs under where it say's 'Potential Problems'. 1 of them are
 called 'Standardization'.

The answer to part two of you question .. Uncheck it to bypass any Surname
that is entered in all uppercase. So if any surname is in uppercase, it will
bypass it and not report it.

There is also a option in options Data Format tab with a radio button on
the left asking what you would like to do with your Surnames.

 Ron,
Thanks for the reply. Now for a dumb question - what/where is the
Standardization tab? Also, will this take care of all surnames at once or do
I have to do one at a time (there are hundreds)? And, why _uncheck _if I
 want all surnames in caps?

I just ran this report. Two questions: 1)How can I prevent it
from listing the same error twice? (i.e. two identical lines, one
after the other). 2) How can I prevent it from showing Surname all
uppercase as an error when I have it set to do that? I would
appreciate some guidance. Thanks, B. Rhodes

RE: [LegacyUG] Sources

2009-05-22 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Mike:

This borders on the classic lumper or splitter issue (see list archives),
and there is no one *right* way. Your master source structure is the key.
Some users create separate master sources for each census year, others break
them down by state or province, many break them down by county. Then, using
the appropriate master source, you do list the individual(s) in the detail.
Personally, I list all family members together in a single citation. If
there are two related families on a single page, I list both in a single
citation to illustrate the proximity. Doing a separate source citation for
each individual in a family would be a major chore and, I think, would
destroy the picture of the family structure.
