[LegacyUG] citing census sources
I know this topic has been discussed to death but I don't remember the answer to one question. For some of my census data I have the actual images/pictures (.jpg files), and for the rest I just have text of the listings. I'm pretty sure that if I attach the pictures at the detail level, they aren't actually stored multiple times; there's just multiple links to that picture. What I don't remember is... If I copy paste the text into the text box at the detail level, then proceed to cite this source (say, from the clipboard) on multiple people, is that text stored multiple times? (I don't think so, but feel the need to ask.) (Yes, I am again wrestling with the way I have my census sources set up... right now they are by page or family (rather than county) in the master list I am re-thinking that...) Re: [LegacyUG] printing addresses--redundant info
Paula Ryburn wrote I am using my address list to enter the cemeteries (burials), hospitals (births) and churches (weddings). In most cases for the cemeteries hospitals, I enter the cemetery name, town state. When they print in a book report (e.g. Ancestor), there is some redundancy, which I can almost live with. However, for some churches I have the full address entered... lots of redundancy in the report! For example: Hugh married Susie on Jan 1, 2001 in Houston, Harris, Texas (Wildwood Methodist Church, 1000 Spring Branch, Houston, TX 77184, USA). Is there a way to have just the name or a portion of the address print in parens after the location? I used to enter my data just like that and I too didn't like the duplication in Reports at all. So what I used to do was to enter most of the address in [[privacy brackets]] - for example, the name would read Wildwood Methodist Church and the address would read 1000 Spring Branch but the City would read [[Houston]], State would be [[TX]], Postal Code [[77184]] and Country [[USA]]. In a Report that would read Hugh married Susie on Jan 1, 2001 in Houston, Harris, Texas (Wildwood Methodist Church, 1000 Spring Branch). The other option is to entire the entire address in the Location field, and in fact that is what I do now. It makes for a very long Location list, but Reports are neater! -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

RE: [LegacyUG] citing census sources
Paula: Jenny answered the part of your question about whether text is stored multiple times. As far as Master Source List organization is concerned, I arranged and rearranged mine a few times before settling on the current version which works very well for me. With census listings my master sources are arranged by year with the country included (i.e. 1850 US Census or 1851 Canada Census), followed by the state/province, and then the county. Just one system for you to consider. I currently have the US census source masters set up by state/county/town/year. I am in the process of moving the year up one in the 'sort' state/county/year/town. For some counties, I have a lot of master sources, and I thought it would be nice to see the things that happened in one place in date order. E.g., births, deaths, marriages. I'm beginning to think that is not the way I should go. Hence my question. I will also take a look at what sort of master source and/or location reporting is available. Thanks again, --Paula --- On Mon, 6/8/09, Kirsten Bowman vik...@rvi.net wrote: Paula: Jenny answered the part of your question about whether text is stored multiple times. If you want to see where you have used SW Sources, you need to view your Master Source List, select one and then use Show List. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
RE: [LegacyUG] converting old sources to new format
I would love to see even a rudimentary tool. Even if the source citations get erased, replacing them is no more work than manually changing each one. In fact, replacing might be faster...? If we've used the sources in a standard fashion in the first place, then it should work pretty well. I can only imagine the people who had trouble may have set things up a bit toward the non-standard side...? Maybe the tool could be available by source type? Converting the straightforward ones and not allowing it on the ones most abused? Just a thought. And/or if anything doesn't meet the requirements of straightforward logic, just skip that conversion write to the error log for the user to clean up later?? That's when I began using the Event Addresses, but also did not like the redundancy in reports. Most of the addresses are easy for me to identify the city, and the few that are not, like First Parish Church, have few people. Re: [LegacyUG] printing addresses--redundant info
Jenny, Well, after going through my events address list, I didn't have very many that had street addresses anyway. And most of them I was familiar with what city they were in. Those that I thought I might forget, I just jotted it in the notes tab. And now that you've worded the bit about addresses in Locations differently (*and* I've learned several things from people on this list just TODAY), you may be right. As is often the case on lists like this, sometimes a sentence means something different to others somehow we end up each trying to solve a different problem, all based on one statement. In other words, our reading of each other's questions is always shaded by the way we do similar tasks ourselves. Wow... TMI? haha Thanks, --Paula --- On Mon, 6/8/09, Jenny M Benson ge...@cedarbank.me.uk wrote: From: Jenny M Benson ge...@cedarbank.me.uk Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] printing addresses--redundant info To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyFamilyTree.com Date: Monday, June 8, 2009, 4:15 PM Paula Ryburn wrote Did using the privacy brackets in the address list cause those details to not show up in a report of all addresses(e.g.) ? [LegacyUG] surnames not ALL CAPS
While we're on the subject of tools or utilities to change massive amounts of data or to at least help us do it.. What if I have a few thousand individuals entered in the olden days with surnames in ALL CAPS, and now I've read here that ALL CAPS is no longer fashionable is there a way to zip through my family file and change all the surnames from ALL CAPS to first letter capitalized only? Re: [LegacyUG] surnames not ALL CAPS
Depends a lot on how you set it up. You -might- be able to lower the case. If you entered the names as call caps to start with, this won't work. But on the off-chance you pre-selected Uppercase for surnames, we can probably force a lot of them to become lower-case. Make sure you have a back up in case you don't like this before trying. Go to Options Customize Data Format tab. Look for Letter Case of Surnames on the left half. If you can change it to Initial Caps. Those names that were entered with lower case to start with will now be Initial case. The names you entered in all caps unfortunately will remain in all caps. Will that help? Re: [LegacyUG] surnames not ALL CAPS
If the surnames were originally entered in all caps, they can be revised one surname (not individual) at a time by: 1. Click on view. 2. Click on master lists. 3. Work your way down the surname list, editing each surname. (FYI, if you want to see how many of any given surname are in your list, click on show list.) This will make the change that you're requesting to every instance of the edited surnames. Re: [LegacyUG] surnames not ALL CAPS
I don't know about the fashionableness of all caps. I didn't like CAPS from day one, so I never did it. Since I had a lot of names like de la Ware, and McDougal and O'Brien. They just looked better. When I downloaded a Gedcom from IGI, many of them were all caps. What I did was, 1. Opened Name List, sorting on Surname 2. Choose 'Tab' Edit. Repair one surname at a time. Ctrl-C and V for all duplicates. 3. switch from Surname to given, repeat the process. For unique names, you are stuck. The program may now exist somewhere to switch them automatically, but even if it is there, it wouldn't fix my examples above.
