[LegacyUG] Define Windows printer

2009-11-08 Thread Jan Roberts
Could someone please remind me where I can define a windows printer in
Legacy? It has always been OK before, but today when I opened Legacy I got
that message - some of my fonts had mysteriously changed too, but I have
fixed that.

RE: [LegacyUG] Define Windows printer

2009-11-08 Thread Jan Roberts
Don't worry, I did what I should have done, checked archives and although I
didn't actually find an answer it alerted me to the fact that it was in
Windows I had to define the printer. Also, all is now working properly
without me having done anything! Just one of those things I guesss.

RE: [LegacyUG] Some report problems

2009-10-09 Thread Jan Roberts
Thanks for this reminder Ward, when I looked at this thread in the archives
I realised that I had in fact contributed to it at the time - Support
questioned someone else as to whether the 'extra' citations related to notes
for an individual and implied that the problem was being looked at. I can
confirm that the errant citations are indeed related to information in
Notes. Presumably the problem hasn't been solved as yet.

No-one has commented about missing pictures in Descendant Book (Modified
Register) - where photos of direct descendants of the starting person are
not included in the report. I thought they were included if not married,
but further experimentation proves that not to be consistent. All expected
photos appear in Descendant Narrative (but errant citations also appear as
well).

I am using legacy 7 Deluxe 7.0.0.109

In trying to test some report behaviour in order to respond to the index
problems experienced by CE I discovered a couple of other problems in .rtf
reports. After the lines giving instructions about creating your own
 index
I get a short second set of source citations, numbered from 1. again.
 There
is plenty or room for these citations to fit on the last page of the long
 list of citations.

The second problem is that if a direct descendant is married their picture
doesn't appear - only that of their spouse. If the direct descendant is
unmarried their picture appears. I have options set for show pictures of
husband and wife, show all preferred. They have always shown in other
reports, specifically the Descendant Narrative. Can anyone reproduce?

RE: [LegacyUG] No report indices in text format, other bugs in reports

2009-10-07 Thread Jan Roberts
CE,
I believe the limitations you are experiencing are part and parcel of the
type of output you are requesting, rather than a limitation of Legacy.
Asking for a text file will automatically strip / not pick up the coding
which allows for the creation of an index - just as it strips / does not
pick up any coding relating to font, bold, italics etc. It produces a text
document only. With the .rtf document it includes something like the
following

[ Note: Using your word processor, generate an Index here. ]
[ All names have been marked as index entries in this document. ]
[ Erase these three lines. ]

at the end of the document so you can use your word processor to create the
index. I find this invaluable, because I don't create the index until I
have edited the .rtf which may put people onto different pages as I move
things, change the size of photos etc. So the .rtf version retains the
index markings, but allows you to still create an index once you have
finished editing. The other versions you cannot edit (unless you have a
fully fledged PDF creator / editor) so there is no need to hold off creating
the index.

I am not asking Legacy to be a word processor. I am asking that, when a
report is Previewed and there are check boxes for printing various types of
files, that those options be produced in whatever format which has a
checkbox.

The simplest would be a text file because then you could format the file in
your word processor.

When the opening page allows you to choose Index Options, you assume that
the indices will be produced in whatever format is allowed, i.e.
Screen/Printer, Text file, HTML, RTF, PDF.

When the Preview shows you a report that includes indices, you assume that
when produced in one of the formats with a check box, that the indices will
be produced when you choose one of those formats.

This does not happen! The indices are missing!!!

THAT is what the problem is.

RE: [LegacyUG] Changing surname

2009-10-03 Thread Jan Roberts
But I would only use the alternative name as an AKA if there is evidence
that an individual actually used both variations, or was recorded in
different documents with both variations. My late first husband's
grandmother was always Georgina DANIELS (until her marriage), but other
branches of the family use the name DANIEL. As she never used DANIEL and I
have never seen her documented as DANIEL I do not use DANIEL as an AKA for
her.

RE: [LegacyUG] Pass on mother's name, not father's

2009-09-11 Thread Jan Roberts
I would just change the surname for each of the children to Monroe / Monrow
as listed below. You don't have to keep the name that automatically appears
from the father. My late first husband changed his surname by deed poll to
his mother's maiden name, so his father is WARD, his mother and his own
surname are HAWTON, as is my daughter's surname. Children from first
marriage have surname WARD. I also notated the change as an AKA and an
Event so the reason is recorded.

Trying to decide this one here. I have a family who gave their kids
the maiden name of the mother.

Like this for example:
John Brown marries Jane Monroe. They have five children.
Their names are:
Kathy Monroe,
David Monrow,
Melissa Monroe,
Amy Monroe
Edy Monroe.

Legacy want to give the kids the fathers name, which it should
99.99 percent of the time. This is the exception. How would
you handle it? Thanks.

Sherry and I have figured out the cause of Run-time error '3019' Operation
invalid without a current index which is occurring in the Master Location
List. Sherry is sending in the bug report and I am contacting you who are
subscribed to the Legacy User Group with the work-around:

1. Please click on Options on the menu bar and choose Customize.

2. In the Customize window, click the View tab and then select 'Use the
Master Location List with the Mapping feature'.

3. Open the Master Source List and it will function without error 3019 or
freezing.

4. At this point, if you select Show Map, you will need to close the Master
Location List and reopen it for the map to actually appear.

The solution for this error 3019 should appear in the next free update to
the Legacy program. I do not have a date for when that will happen.

Thank you for choosing Legacy,

Yes, here it is:
Ruth, It's possible that your settings have changed. Try clicking the Sort

Error 3019 is an Access Error indicating and indexing problem, if sorting

 Hello List,

I have waited a couple of days to report this as I wanted to see if
 anyone
else would report it. I installed ver. 7.0.0.103 and everything was
 working fine
until i went to add a location to a death. I got an error message and the
program closed down. I restarted legacy, tried to enter the location
 again
 and
the same thing happen. I then open the Location file and my locations was
 all
jumbled up, not in the normal A-B-C order.

I could not find any way to change it so I deleted the data and restored
 an
earlier file and had the same problem. I then uninstalled the program and
reloaded 7.0.0.103 and made a ged of my data in RM4 and installed in
 Legacy. The
problem was still there. I uninstalled again and loaded 7.0.0.81.
 Everything
worked fine then. Is this problem a bug or not?

Also, where do I look for version 7.0.0.100? I seems to have lost it from
 my computer.

RE: [LegacyUG] Magically Appearing Unknown Spouses and Parents

2009-08-05 Thread Jan Roberts
I know this query first appeared a while back, but here are my thoughts:
If you have a child but no parents and then find the name of one parent you
would 'Add a parent '. This would in effect 'create' the parent of the
opposite sex - automatically identified as Unknown by Legacy. If you later
find the other parent you already have the parent couple, but not the name
of the mother / father - so now you need to manually change Unknown to the
newly discovered name and then 'Link to an existing person'. No need to
turn either option off.

Ron,

But there are both options: (1) Add a mother or father to the child, and
(2) Add a daughter (in my case) to the parents. With both options, a pop up
screen appears asking whether you want to add a new person, or link to an
existing person.

If the only way to prevent unknown people I've never created from
appearing is to always add/link children to the parents, then the other
option should be turned off!

 Connie,

The observation which first comes to mind when reading your
post is the statement I first added a new, named wife to
the father, then attempted to link them to the
 daughter...

In fact the procedure is to link the children to the
 parents(s).

I know this topic has been discussed several times
before, in one manner or another, but I can't come up with
the proper search terms to find what I need in the
 Archives.

Yesterday, I attempted to link two individuals who
were already in my database as father and daughter. The
father was in my database as a totally unlinked person (no
parents, no children, no siblings, no spouse). The daughter
was an end-of-the-line ancestor with many descendants.

As best as I can remember the sequence I used, I first
added a new, named wife to the father, then attempted to
link them to the daughter. But I might have started with
trying to link him to the daughter before entering a wife's
name. In any event, it took several minutes of errors
stating things like She is already linked to these parents
(which she most certainly was not), or, she already has
parents, do you want to link to another set of parents?
before I discovered there was a phantom unknown spouse for
the father. I then thought it should be a simple matter of
unlinking the daughter from this phantom marriage, deleting
the unknown spouse/marriage, and relinking to the proper
named parents, but that didn't work either without several
tries. In one case, the unknown spouse was deleted and
 magically reappeared again.

What is causing these Unknown spouses to appear? Is
there any way to prevent it? In checking my Marriage List, I
see I not only have several phantom spouses, I have some
Unknown to Unknown parents of some end-of-the line ancestors
 that I certainly never added.

This seems to have started in a relatively recent
version (maybe from 6.0 to 7.0?) Is this not a bug?
 (It is certainly annoying).

  Thanks,

  Connie

Dennis,

There are two problems which I have regarding your comments:

My web site is set up with images in one folder and the web pages in
another folder (mirroring the structure I have on my PC). The images I
want to use on my web site are transferred to the web image folder
withot change - ie they are transferred as JPEG images.

This is where what I am seeing differs. I see x.jpeg transferred to the
web image folder as x.jpg. So the link in the web page (to x.jpg) points
correctly to the file in the web image folder.

Yes, I agree, Legacy does change the extension to JPG. My problem is that
some are *and must be* GIFs (or PNG) in order to retain transparency.

When I create web pages using the Legacy Create Web Pages option
Legacy creates the pages OK except that Legacy changes the image
extension from JPEG to JPG.

Which I am not able to reproduce

MY experience is the same as the OP, in that in my script the GIF extension
is changed to JPG.

This has been the case since I first started to create Legacy webpages in
the early days of V5. If there is a setting somewhere that causes this then
I would love to hear where it is as I cannot find it!

renamed x.jpeg to x.jpg it would work the same. I am not an expert wrt

I add the JPEG images to an individuals photo gallery in the normal way

(Initially the picture center would not recognise a JPEG file however
this has been corrected by Legacy when I pointed out the problem to them).

I now have several hundred images to add to my web page and do not want
to have to individually change each JPEG extension to a JPG extension.

This could be done with a batch rename in a program like IrfanView as
far as I know. But this is neither here nor there as you should not be
 forced to do this.

As JPEG extension are quite common I do not see why Legacy cannot fix
the problem.

Actually, I rarely see .jpeg extensions. But again, this is neither here
 nor there.

So far I have not been able to reproduce the problem. I'll ask again
... what version of Legacy are you using and specifically which type of
web page are you generating? Ancestor, descendant, pedigree, family
 group, or individual?

Also tell us the name of the folder the original images are stored in
AND the name of the web image folder that you entered on the Project

RE: [LegacyUG] How to Represent a Best Fit Ancestor

2009-07-06 Thread Jan Roberts
I have a similar situation on my paternal grandfather's line. He was,
according to family story, sent to an orphanage by his father after his
mother died in childbirth. I have found a family of children admitted to an
orphanage in the right time frame, with siblings with same names etc.
admitted by their father after mother died. I will probably never prove
that this is the correct family, but I have included them as best fit with
a note for both the father and mother to say that they have not been proved
to be the parents of my (proven) John Joseph, but that they are definitely
the parents of the children admitted to the orphanage This note prints in
all reports so there is no confusion.

How would you represent a Best Fit set of parents? This concerns a direct
ancestor from a small island in Scotland (Islay). The available records have
gaps such that his parents will likely never be known; but there is one
family that stands out as a best fit in terms of locations, dates, names,
etc. I want to include this next generation of parents (and include research
into their other children's descent) but make it clear that this is only a
best guess. (In particular, this assumes my ancestor was born on Islay and
did not come to Islay from somewhere else.)

Do you use the Children's Settings for this and add a new setting such as
Tentative? This is not quite right - I want to represent that these
parent's son Donald (who is not tentative) is the best fit for my Donald.

 I agree with Jeff's findings.

I set the Indent each gen to .3 and the left margin to 1.25 inches.
When the .rtf Report is opened in Word of OO, the first generation is
indented about 1.25 fom the left margin, Each subsequent generation
is correctly indented .3 from the previous one.

When I set the page margin (in Legacy) to 0, the first generation was
very close to the left edge of the page. I then tried with a margin
of .5 and left the indent at .3 and this time the first generation
was about .5 from the left margin.

So it seems to be that Legacy is adding an indent equal to the Left
Margin setting to the paragraphs of the first generation, but whatever
the margin is set at, the first generation paragraphs should align to
 the Left Margin without indent.

The other possibility - if you don't have two sets of parents - is that you
have entered your parents, but not linked them to yourself. In this case,
click on the empty box in your father's spot (above your name) and then
choose Link to existing person - locate your father in the list that pops up
and repeat the process for your mother.

RE: [LegacyUG] Four generation tree with photos for grandkids

2009-01-31 Thread Jan Roberts
I just decided to print of this report for each of my grandchildren. (I had
forgotten about the existence of this simple chart.) I elected to show 4
generations, and to include life span years - but there is a problem! The
fourth generation names are side shifted (can't think of a better way to
describe it.) For instance, the great grandmother on the far right has her
picture, and the correct life span, but her name is beneath her husband.
The life span under the great grandfather is correct. The next great
grandmother has correct life span, but the name of the great grandfather
immediately to her right. This continues across the line - except the
seventh great grandparent 's name is out on its own in the page margin and
the eighth great grandparent doesn't even have a box - no name, no date,
nothing. I've tried fiddling with all possible settings regarding box /
picture size etc. Interestingly, if I don't include life span every fourth
generation name is lumped on top of each other in the left hand page margin,
none are in the box with the image. Is it just me - or can anyone replicate?

RE: [LegacyUG] Someone

2009-01-29 Thread Jan Roberts
In cases like this I have changed my wording on an individual record basis
to 'had a child with' and if it is truly a case of father unknown rather
than father's name not known at this point I make the father's name (First
Name) an (Surname) unknown man. I 'create' this person each time rather
than reusing a default person. Also have to check This couple did not
marry. I also have Legacy set to 'not change what I type' for surnames.
(Usually I type surnames in capitals - but not in this case. I also don't
select for the report to capitalise surnames - because I've already done
it.) Reports then read - Mary SMITH had a child with an unknown man. Their
child was .
Of course if she happened you have more than one illegitimate child and you
know the father was the same person you could change the wording
accordingly. Otherwise, add each relationship separately.

Have you tried tried going to the individual's marriage screen, and for the
'marriage' to the unknown person change it to 'partnered' (or whatever
suits). Also check the 'this couple did not marry' box. The report output
will then read Jane partnered.

Like you, I think, I would prefer it to say nothing at all.

RE: [LegacyUG] Someone

2009-01-28 Thread Jan Roberts
I know I am replying to this almost a month after it was posted - and I'm
sure others have commented on the someone issue. But in checking to see
if I had the same problem (I don't by the way - marriage sentences are fine)
I did discover another two problems.

If I select the option to have source citations listed after each
generation, and begun on a new page, the title on some source citation pages
picks up the report subject's spouse's name instead of the heading Source
Citations. It appears to happen for the first two generations back from the
subject (i.e. parents and grandparents). Following generations say
Ancestors of Subject Name. This does not happen if I have the citations at
the end of the report. Heading on all relevant pages there is Source
Citations.

Also, regardless of the format options of the report if there is a photo on
the Title Page it is covering up part of the report title.

Anyone else seeing these problems? I'm using Legacy Deluxe 7.0.0.86.

example was Individual Record of Janet Kay Jan SULLIVAN and what I
was looking at was the top of an Individual Report which read
Individual Report for Jennifer Margaret Dodd although my name is
actually entered in Legacy as Jennifer Margaret Jenny Dodd.

I've just looked at a few other Reports and Charts and none of them have
shown the quoted name yet so I'm not sure exactly where you are seeing
it.

RE: [LegacyUG] Update 7.0.0.76

2008-12-07 Thread Jan Roberts
Sorry Jenny, but yes it does. I think the problem is that the 'quoted'
names options are for narrative type reports, and so doesn't apply to the
titles of non-narrative reports. In fact, you don't get an option to use or
remove quoted names.

[LegacyUG] Marriage Wording

2008-12-07 Thread Jan Roberts
Using Legacy Deluxe 7.0.0.76.

Just playing with Marriage wording options as recently discussed. I set the
Customise View Marriage wording options to say if Unmarried (Spouse is
not known): Person 1 had a relationship with an unknown person.

Wording options in the Marriage Screen show correctly. Alberta and unknown
partner are correctly marked as This couple did not marry.

But the report shows the following:

Alberta married an unknown person. They had one daughter: Unnamed.

3-Unnamed POULSEN [611] was born in 1891 in Swan Reach, Victoria,
Australia22 and died in 1891 in Swan Reach, Victoria, Australia.23

Alberta married James Francis Grant WALSH [15] [MRIN: 3] on 20 Dec 1894 in
Parkes, New South Wales, Australia, son of James WALSH [26] and Catherine
CULLEENY [27]. James was born on 17 Oct 1865 in Gordon, Victoria, Australia,
died on 25 Sep 1955 in Surrey Hills, Victoria, Australia24 at age 89, and
was buried in Catholic Section, Box Hill Cemetery, Box Hill, Victoria,
Australia. They had five children: Nellie Frances, Eileen Constance, Beryl,
William James and Gladys Irene.

Past discussions (to be found in the archives) will say that Legacy uses
Internet Explorer whether you do or prefer not, to display web pages
within the program. When you open a page in a new window (right click on
the page and select) then Firefox will be used because you have set it
be your default browser.

As for your error: not seen that particular one. Seen plenty of others,
but not that one. Others have been largely a result of having
inadvertently messed around with file disposal settings within IE or
Firefox - instructions for opening or saving files of various types when
downloading them. Never could get to the bottom of the problem.

[LegacyUG] Update 7.0.0.76

2008-12-04 Thread Jan Roberts
I don't see this little change listed in the Revision History anywhere - but
thank you for it all the same. If a quoted name is used in Descendant Book

(is usually called . if still living.)

However, when a quoted name is part of a non-narrative Report Title it still
picks up the Quoted name (e.g. Individual Record of Janet Kay Jan SULLIVAN
).

Re: [LegacyUG] Sorting children and 1/2 siblings by birth order?

2008-10-29 Thread Jan Roberts

Unfortunately - No. The 1/2 children will always show at the end of the list, after any children common to the two parents. Where all of the childen are 1/2 the first in the list will be the children of the highlighted parent. And you have to remember that they are not true HALF siblings - because they don't necessarily share a parent. As you have said in your example the husband and wife each have children from previous marriages, but they do not have children together, yet the children will show up as half children. It just means that only one of the shown parents is their parent.

Thank you to those who gave me good advice when I asked about how to clean up my gedcom file from FTM into Legacy.

I have been trying to get to know Legacy today and have watched all of the training videos at least once. I am getting a pretty good understanding, but ran into a problem almost right away, as follows:

I have a Family View screen that shows the following:

A Husband who was been married twice with one child from a previous marriage, but no children with the Wife shown on this Family View screen.
The Wife who has been married three times, with one child from a 1st marriage and 2 children from a 2nd marriage, and again, no children with the Husband shown on this Family View.

The Husband and Wife have no children together, but have four children between them from prior relationships.

When I bring up the Family View for the above Husband and Wife, I get a list of four 1/2-siblings out of birth order. I have tried right clicking on each of the children's names, and then selected "Children's Settings" in order to sort the list, but when I do, no children show up in the list because all of the children are from other marriages. Is there a way to sort the children by birth order on this screen?

Thank you for your help.

Vicki

I have just had a bit of a play with this - and if you have designated a
Child Status it does indeed show beside the children's names in Family
View
(very helpful if you also have 1/2 children showing because it reads -
First
Name Middle Name SURNAME [RIN] (Birth year / Death Year) (Child Status -
in
my case the user generated terms of Step-son / daughter of xyz) (name of
other natural parent). Just as Linda McCauley said.

However - when I went into Options Customise View to check if I had it
set to show status I noticed a check box for Don't show Married. It was
ticked. But what does it actually do? Unticking it didn't make any
noticeable change to the Family View - but I'm not sure what it is meant
to
 affect. Does anyone know?

 Mark,

If you go to OptionsCustomiseView there is a check box for showing child
status, however in v7 at least it doesn't seem to do anything, not on my

up at anyrate. It is not something I have used so I don't know what it
should do and there is nothing to assist in the Help Files.

To test it again I made my daughter adopted and nothing showed, and this
is
not because I have columns of kids! Whether other symbols affect the
output
 I don't know.

I would suggest that perhaps Legacy could give a definative answer?

RE: [LegacyUG] Pros and Cons of Notes vs. Events Usage

2008-10-14 Thread Jan Roberts
I don't do this myself, but another option you could consider is to
restructure most of your Event sentences so they only contain Notes and
Sources, although personally I believe a date filed would be most desirable
as it will sort the events by date. My biggest 'con' re the use of freeform
Notes only would be that if you later discover something that happened
between two other dates you would have to search to find where to insert the
new information.

If you were to structure your Event Sentences Definitions along the lines
of:
Tick Show a Date Field. Leave all Sentence Definitions empty (delete what
is currently there) - except the one which says 'If all Fields filled' and
in that box type replace what is there with [Notes] [Sources]. You could
also put the same definition in the one that says 'If Desc. Date and Place
are empty', so that if you didn't actually have a date it wouldn't matter.

However, if you wanted just one Event Sentence to cover all types of 'events
/ facts / notes' you would have to create a new Event. To do this click on
Add Event (for any individual) then click on the little blue arrow next to
the Even box (top of the next screen that appears), then click on the Add
button (third down, right hand side of the Master Event Definition box that
appears). Give it a name that begins with AA so it always appears at the
top of the Event list when you want to use it - otherwise you've got to
scroll down to find it, then make the above changes to the Sentence
Definitions.

Cheers,
Jan

I also prefer using events. I actually do not use notes at all. I found
that notes do not print on several of the reports I like to use and when
they printed they often showed up in stranges places in the report. With
events, everything prints in order, with sources, with pictures, and I
always use my own wording (at least in the reports I use).

This also saved me from trying to decide if something should be considered
an event, or should be included in notes. I like everything to show in my
reports and it annoyed me that certain reports did not allow the inclusion
of notes (why bother entering them if you can't see them in a report) so I
moved totally away from them and kept it simple: events only.

Experiement with the different reports and see what you like in the end
results. I played around for a long time before deciding on a course of
action and I've been happy with the results. You may like using notes for
different reasons.

Hi Jessica,

Before using Legacy, I used an event driven genealogy program so I'm
comfortable creating and using events.

Even though I did at first place some items in the general notes, I've since
begun replacing all my note content with events. For general notes, I just
created an event called Note. For most things, I like to use specific event
names, such as the obituary event. Most events I've changed the sentence
wording to be [notes][sources] as I prefer to write out what I want to say.
A few, such as a census or an obituary, I begin with a canned sentence,
depending on what fields I fill in.

Bear in mind, I do not wish to take my material into a word processor. I
want my reports to read as well as they can, straight from the program and I
like to include photos in my reports. These are my personal considerations.

Three things that come to mind are the fact you can easily shift the events
in the timeline, you can attach a photo to each event and have it included
in the reports and you can easily source each event.

I'm sure other Legacy users will chime in with favorite ways of handling
things. It's nice to have choices and you're wise to ask for idea's before
you get too far into your family history. I've picked up so many helpful
ideas from other users over the years and know how helpful various
suggestions can be.

Good luck with your family history projects.

tab. I have tried everything suggested in the Error Number solutions. I
have also ensured that my Firewall (XP Firewall only) will allow Legacy to
access the internet. Does anyone else have the same problem? I use Mozilla
Firefox as my default browser. So I have even made IE7 my default browser
but that hasn't helped.

Cheers,

Jan

RE: [LegacyUG] Marriage sourcing

2008-08-01 Thread Jan Roberts
I can't quite see why this is a problem. Surely it takes but a second or
two to write a little note (the source text /comment tab would seem to be
the ideal place) or to add the single word (date) or (place) etc. in the
source detail. I can't see how it is any different to having two sources
which give slightly different information for say a name - in this case I
would 'write a little note' to explain the difference. Sometimes I have a
source for a surname (for example an obituary might alert me to the fact
that a woman married a JONES - e.g. survived by his daughter Mrs Mary JONES)
and later I find that Mary's husband was Fred JONES. One source is relevant
to the surname of her husband; the other is relevant to his first name. I
have to make a note about each.

Cheers,
Jan

[LegacyUG] Problem with Legacy Home Page Tab

2008-07-10 Thread Jan Roberts
At the moment I have Legacy Deluxe 7.0.0.45. I have just tried to access

get the following message and can go no further.

Error displaying Legacy Home page.

I can access the Legacy Home Page through the Internet icon, and I know I
can download the update from there - but I'm not certain that everything is
as seamless if I update that way. Could someone enlighten me please? And /
or - does anyone else still with 7.0.0.45 have the same problem accessing
the home page via the Home Page tab?

RE: [LegacyUG] Mr Mrs (was Standardization)

2008-06-18 Thread Jan Roberts
Yes David, Legacy does allow you to record a different surname for anyone -
regardless of the father's surname. i.e If you have Legacy options set to
automatically fill in the surname based on the father's surname you can
always override that on an individual basis. And yes, I am always referred
to as Jan MAIDENNAME in reports. However, I structure my narrative reports
so that the sentences only use first or quoted names (for instance I am
really Janet, but always known as Jan - so Jan is the quoted name),
interspersed with He/She so the reports read more naturally. If I want to I
can also use field names in my sentence structures specify the name /
combinations of names to be used. However, if I retained his birth name as
the primary name in Legacy I would get sentences that said things like John
George SMITH married Janet Kay MAIDENNAME / John and Jan had one daughter
etc. etc. - because the reports will only use the primary name (in a variety
of ways as specified by the field names) - and clearly Janet Kay MAIDENNAME
did not marry a John George SMITH. And if I recorded my daughter's surname
as BROWN it would muddy the report even further.

Jan

Hi Jan,

Thank you so much for that. That's another interesting one. I think I am
write in saying that John George SMITH can have a daughter named Mary BROWN
(i.e. Legacy will allow a change of Surname). Am I correct in saying that
in Legacy reports etc you will always be know and referred to as Jan
(..maiden name) in spite of being married to a SMITH /BROWN? Do let me know
if I am wrong here - I don't actually generate reports that often!
Therefore, personally, one could have your first husband as John George
SMITH and use Fred James BROWN as an A.K.A/alternate name. This is
personally what I would go for, just to keep my rule of 'standardization at
birth', but it is certainly another option.

Thank you for pointing that out.

Best wishes

I agree completely with your line of reasoning. With one exception - my
late first husband was born (say) John George SMITH, but by the time I met
him he had legally changed his name to Fred James BROWN. I became Mrs Jan
BROWN when we married. Our daughter is Mary BROWN. So, although his
parents are listed as Bill SMITH and Jane BROWN (he actually took his
mother's maiden name when he changed) and the children from his first
marriage carry the name SMITH in my database I have recorded John George
SMITH as an AKA - and I used an Event to describe the reason and date for
the name change. Otherwise my daughter would show as Mary SMITH, which she
has never been.

Hi Everyone,

All this talk about whether we put full stops or not after Mr, Mrs, Miss,
etc. had got me thinking about my own practice. When I came to think, I
realized that I do not actually record Mr, Mrs etc. at all in the
Individual's Information' view! Unless anyone can convince me otherwise, I
can't see the reason. In Legacy, we can see clearly the males females and
if they are married or not.

All males are initially 'Master's' and at some point become Mister's'. If I
distinguish between the two, for living persons at some time I would need to
change all my 'Master's to Mister's'. That seems unnecessary work. If you
use the abbreviation 'Mr', am I right in thinking this stands for 'Master'
or 'Mister'? As all males (in anglicized speak) are 'Mr', why do we need to
specify for each record?

All females are Miss, until they are married at which point they 'usually'
become Mrs. In the Legacy family view. My wife and I happily sit on
opposite sides of the page, me with my surname, and Carol with her 'maiden'
surname. If I then insert Mrs, as her title, surely her name will read Mrs
Carol Southall, but when married her name changed to Mrs Carol Brookes.

You are not correct in your last sentence!

If you wish to show your husband and children all with the surname
Brown, that's fine, and you'd do just as you have done. However, if you
wished to show your husband as Smith, because that was the name he was
born with, and use Brown as an AKA, yet still show your children as
Browns, you would simply change the suggested surname of Smith to
Brown when you entered your children's names.

For various reasons I have instances in my Family File where the
legitimate children of a married couple do not have exactly the same
surname as the main one for their father.

[LegacyUG] RTF reports

2008-06-18 Thread Jan Roberts
I have just noticed a few additional things with the Descendant Narrative
Report when I create it as an rtf file. Although I have selected to have
page number and compiler information etc. printed as a footer these do NOT
appear in the rtf version. They appear in the screen / printer option, and
also in the pdf option. However, I need to edit just about every report I
create, so those options are not viable for me. Has anyone else noticed the
same behaviour?

Relationship Calculator and Tools Set Relationship both work, very quickly
- with approx. 8500 individuals. However, non-blood relationships do not
display on the Family View for more than two generations, regardless of how
many generations I have selected to display. For example, I can only get as
far as Father-in-Law and Mother-in-Law, Brother-in-Law and Sister-in-Law -
what happened to husband's niece or niece-in-law etc.

Hi Jan,

You fix this in your Word Processor. You have to break the link and
save the images actually in the document. I haven't got MS Word on
this computer so can't check but I think you'll find it under Edit
Links. It does blow out the size of the document so you'll also want
to compress all the pics - see the Format Picture dialogues.

RE: [LegacyUG] Help with Install password for Legacy 7.0 Free version

2008-06-04 Thread Jan Roberts
Let’s get some perspective into this please! I am sick of all the whingers
- and I know I am at risk of being ticked off for being off-topic, but it
has got beyond a joke. I have been as keen as anyone else to get my hands
on Version 7.0. 30 minutes ago I paid for Deluxe 7.0, and within 5 minutes
I got confirmation of my order - along with a reminder of what was clearly
spelled out on the website - that I would receive a separate email with
download instructions and password by the end of the next working day (but
probably sooner!) So I wait! The world is not going to come to an end
because I don't have it this minute! In the whole scheme of things having
to wait for the password is very, very minor. You see, I am waiting for
results of a CT scan and liver biopsy to see if I do in fact have secondary
cancer from the breast cancer I thought I had beaten for six years! Sort of
makes waiting for a Legacy password pale into insignificance doesn't it!

Millennium staff - thank you for a fantastic product at a fantastic price.
I hope all the whingers have hard drive crashes! :-)

Very frustrating--I am a paid customer.  I wanted to upgrade to the 7.0

purchased the upgrade.  In the meantime, I was told I would be emailed the

Does anyone know the new one for 7.0?  I was hoping Legacy would keep up

RE: [LegacyUG] Re: asking questions associated with Legacy

2008-04-06 Thread Jan Roberts
I occasionally teach a 'Using the Internet for Genealogy' class at the adult
community education college where I work. Course information clearly states
that students should have at least basic computer, internet and genealogy
research skills. Very often they have none of the above! So instead of
focussing on the huge variety of resources that can expand people's
current research - I find myself teaching all of the above. But so what?
The joy of hearing I found her! outweighs the frustration of wishing
people had a better understanding of the basics before embarking on my
course.
People are excited about the prospect of venturing into family research -
and it is often because they have discovered that so much is available
on-line. When I started out thirty years ago everything was done via books,
or microfiche / film or by visiting the actual archives offices. I had a
good grounding in family history research before I ever touched a computer.
Most of my skills were learned because I joined a local group and had
practical demonstration of what to do (heaven help me - I remember when I
first used a microfilm reader, I must have asked the dumbest of questions,
and was so fearful of making a mistake). I then had a good grounding in
computers before I ever used them for family research. (But the day I set
up my first computer at home I got all panicky because I didn't know how to
get the program back onto the floppy disk when I finished using it for the
day - no such thing as hard drives then, all software was loaded when you
wanted to use it). People just starting out now don't have that luxury so
of course they are going to ask questions that some people think are not
appropriate. Isn't it better for us to gently guide them (although I agree
with Mike - it should be off-list) so they learn the correct way of doing
things and eventually experience the joy of learning about their forebears
than to get all huffy with them so they never learn?
If a particular poster really annoys you - set up your email program to
automatically delete mail from those people. Problem solved!

Just my two penneth worth.

Cheers,
Jan

I still fail to see why some people are so reluctant to experiment with
new concepts and features: after all that's what the Sample files are
there for! Instead, they prefer to fire off a quick message to the LUG
in the hope that an allowance will be made for their unfamiliarity with
both the product and the 'Net. God! There are places within newsgroups
where newbies get eaten for breakfast just because they won't conform to
the perceived standards of the groups. And, like here, they go away in a
huff and miss out on the reams of information and experience that the
denizens of the groups can supply if they'd only just grit their teeth
and hang in for a while. What's wrong with lurking for a few days to see
how the wind blows and get a feel for how best to approach the list?

People will help people. It's in their nature to do so. What some people
do not like is being made to feel that they are being taken advantage
of. That has happened quite recently. I *will* help people, provided
that the questions being asked are couched in terms that allow the more
experienced of us, to have a realistic chance of answering the question,
rather than having to press (interrogate?) the questioner for details of
what they think their problem is. So, in that respect: Yes, there can be
dumb-seeming questions.

Chest feeling a lot lighter now. Back to lurking again.

RE: [LegacyUG] Family Tales g

2008-03-27 Thread Jan Roberts
I have created an event called Family Story (complete with ) with the
sentence structure in all instances as .. There is a [EventName] that
[GivenName] [-Notes].[Sources]
I put all details in the Notes section of the event. The resulting event
sentence reads something like.
There is a family story that Mary came to the USA with her parents etc.etc.
For the source I have a Master Source called Personal Memories - I add the
name of the person who provided the tale in the Source Details.

Work for me.

Cheers,
Jan

Hi,

When you have time, could those of you who have dealt with this tell me what

method you used?

I have some wonderful family stories that cannot be proved, nor would
proving them make a bit of difference to the genealogy of the family in any
way, but I would like to have them in my Legacy files for future generations

to read once the story tellers are gone.

For instance, my Aunt Abbie told me that her Grandmother Mary Engleby came
to the USA with her parents as a small child (that has been proved). On the

ship coming over, she got very sick died...during preparations for her
funeral at sea someone thought they saw movement they worked on her she
survived...until she died in 1916 at the age of 67. g

I've been putting such stories as this in Notes with the name of the person
who told me the story as source along with the date they told me.

Does anyone have a better way? Or is this the best way?

TIA,

Sally

RE: [LegacyUG] Need advice on entering info from crew lists

2008-03-26 Thread Jan Roberts
The way I handle this sort of situation is to create an Employment or
Occupation event for the first known instance, then add additional details
in the notes. For example, my grandfather was also a Merchant Seaman and I
have copies of numerous Discharge papers when he signed off after each
voyage. In this case I created an Occupation event (Merchant Seaman) with
date/s and name of the ship for the earliest instance – then in the Notes
for the event I wrote (in narrative style) about his subsequent ships and
employers. I should add I always create Narrative Reports to read in
sentence style – not just as a list of events, so this works well for me.

Cheers,

Jan

I have a man that was a merchant seaman from about 1947 to abt 1960.
HYPERLINK http://Ancestry.comAncestry.com has him listed on numerous crew
lists. This includes the ship name, the date, his position on board, etc. I
would like to include all the available info about him, but am not sure of
the best way.

Should I enter each listing as an Employment Event? Should I attach a
spreadsheet to perhaps an Occupation (Seaman) Event?

Anyone have any suggestions how I should proceed. There are probably approx.
30 entries on ancestry, which is why I was thinking of a spreadsheet.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

RE: [LegacyUG] One Event - 2 Dates

2008-03-07 Thread Jan Roberts
That's what I do for a lot of Occupation information particularly. I guess
the only real problem is if I later find and earlier instance of an
occupation - but in that case I just change the date and the subsequent
notes. I put the date of the earliest known instance of an occupation in
the sentence definition. Then in the Notes I add all other instances -
sometimes noting a change of occupation as well. This works for me because
I choose to print reports as Narratives with dot point sentences. Just
means that some dot points are quite lengthy. But reads nicely in the final
report.

RE: [LegacyUG] Problem connecting to Legacy Home.

2008-03-01 Thread Jan Roberts
If I click on the Legacy News link (i.e. the actual words Legacy News) I am
taken to the Legacy News page. However, if I click on the 'Make sure you
are connected to the internet and then click here to retrieve the latest
news items' link nothing happens.
If I click on the Options Button (i.e. the one in the main screen, not the
one in the Menu at the top) it takes me to the options dialogue box. I can
make changes there (which 'stick') but as soon as I close that I get the
following error message

Error displaying Legacy Home page.
Error 13: Type mismatch
Would you like to TRY IT AGAIN?

I get the same error message if I click on the Home Page icon (i.e. the
house) and I am NOT taken to the Legacy Home Page. This has been a problem
for a long time. And yes, I have checked the Menu Options Customize
Launch - all areas of which I have left blank because I want my default
browser (Firefox) to access the Internet. I even tried adding the link to
Firefox.exe just in case Legacy is expecting Internet Explorer to be my
default browser, but no change. Interestingly, I get the same error message
as above when I close out of the Launch tab.

Check for Update works - but I get the same error message. Install the
Update also works.

All the links in the box headed Support work (including the link to the
Legacy Home Page).

Hi Jan and others,

The Single Parent options are only activated if no partner has been
entered in Legacy and the partner is simply the automatically
generated by the program blank or unknown when you add a child to someone.
Once you've added data to that unknown - even if you simply go in and
name them yourself Unknown - you've lost access to the Single Parent
options.

It would be good if they were turned on by making the partner Private.

Yes! That's because Americans think that Scotland Ireland are States
within the UK. The TNA regards the censuses as separate entities, based
on the legal system: England Wales being one entity, Scotland a second

Whilst it won’t create married name AKAs automatically I have thought
of a way to make the task a little easier. Go to Index View. Make
sure you have selected to Show AKAs. Sort by RIN (this is important,
because it lists all instances of a particular women together because
they have the same RIN). Scroll down through all names – remembering
that females are shown in one colour, males in another so it makes it
easy to see the females who might need a married AKA. For the women
where I have entered a married name AKA I see the following:

 10 SMITH, Mary Jane

10 ~ BROWN, Mary Jane (Mrs)

10 ~ JONES, Mary Jane (Mrs)

When I come across a single entry for a woman it is a simple matter to
check across the columns to see if she has a spouse. If so, but no
AKA it is a simple matter to open up the individual screen for that
women, add the married AKA, return to the Index View by closing the
Individual Information screen and continue the search. Might take a
while, but infinitely quicker than any other way I can think of.

One thing which I have found easy to overlook is to check whether a woman
has multiple marriages: in which case she will have multiple AKAs.

 Cheers,

 Jan

RE: [LegacyUG] Automatically create AKA for married women

2008-02-12 Thread Jan Roberts
Sorry to be pedantic Ron, but that is the whole point of my original post.
I have a number of women for whom I did add married name AKAs as I went.
But I have many others that only have their birth name. In the Index View,
with numerous spouses showing across the columns, I can clearly see whether
I have added a married name AKA for any particular woman. If, as I scroll
through, I find a woman with only one entry but who has one or more husbands
listed in the next column(s) I know that I have to create a married name
AKA, which I can do by accessing the Individual information screen directly
from the Index View. One has to sort by RIN first, so that the names are
listed in RIN order rather than alphabetically – that way I can see all
instances of, for example RIN 10
e.g.
10 SMITH, Mary Jane
10 ~ BROWN, Mary Jane (Mrs) (because I always add the prefix Mrs for married
names)
10 ~ JONES, Mary Jane (Mrs) (if she happens to have more than one husband)

If I haven’t yet entered a married name AKA I will see:

10 SMITH, Mary Jane
11 WHITE, George Whosiwhatsit
etc. etc.

Cheers,
Jan

Jan,

Certainly you can, and whilst I do not have mine permanently set to show
AKAs I do use it from time to time. That is not my point which is: If one
has never set the AKAs to include a woman's married name then the AKAs in
the index list will show nothing. When one has a large number to enter it is
very easy to just enter the name that's on family view and to forget to
check how many husbands there have been.

RE: [LegacyUG] Comment about the Source Clipboard

2008-02-11 Thread Jan Roberts
I agree - I NEVER use more than one source on the clipboard as is - but
would dearly love to have the option of 'loading' several sources but opting
to attach only one. For instance, when I am searching UK Census records on
Ancestry.com.au I often find myself switching backwards and forwards between
different years as I try follow a family. It would be so much easier to
have the source details for five Census years on the clipboard so I could
select the one I required for a particular record without having to change
the source itself backwards and forwards form one year to another.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Comment about the Source Clipboard

I'm just returning to using Legacy from a fairly long absence. When I
checked into using the Source Clipboard (SC) and noticed the 5 tabs, I was
hoping that I would be able to paste any or all of the 5 loaded sources into
my data. I.e., have a choice of whether I wanted to use SOURCE1, SOURCE3,
etc., or maybe even 2 out of the 5. Having to paste *all* of the sources
currently loaded in the SC at once seems to be a feature that I would use
only rarely, since I rarely have 5 different sources at once that I would
use as a source for just one of the fields on the individual's information
sheet.

The SC would be so much more useful if the user could pick one or more of
the 5 loaded sources to paste. The way it is, I see very little reason to
ever save a file of 5 different sources for later use. It would also be a
better tool if we had the ability to edit all fields of the sources that are
loaded into the SC from within the SC. Being able to copy detail source
citations into it on the fly would also improve its utility.

Now, I would love to hear someone talk me out of this way of thinking and
convince me that this is a better tool than it appears to be. I'm not
saying it is of *no* use but I do think it could be improved greatly. I
would appreciate some examples of how you use this tool to help me better
understand it. I have read the help samples and see how it could help in
that situation on a temporary basis.

I looked at the archives and notice this has been talked about before but it
appears to have been a while (I could be wrong :)). Thanks for your
thoughts on this issue!

Dennis

Still doesn't remove the fact that having 5 tabs in the Source Clipboard is

Jan,

I may be misunderstanding you here, but I cannot see the difference between
clicking a tab at the top of the clip board and bringing up a new census by
clicking the Load button.

Should you wish you could save each of the 5 census (or whatever) and just
load the appropriate one as required.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Primary Name and AKA

I have this one person which was christened 'Anton Marius Sorensen'
(documented in the Church records). His father and well as 5 generations
before him was christened using both a patronymic name plus the family name
Vinther. As an adult Anton emigrated from Denmark to USA, and in the Ellis
Island Passenger lists he listed his name as Anton Marius Winther and that's
what he called him self for the rest of his life in US. All his children in
all the US records I have found were named Winther.

Whether the reason for the missing Vinther at Anton's christening was due to
a clerical error or some other reason I don't know, but there is no doubt
that Anton perceived him self as a Vinther. Therefore I'm inclined to set
his primary name as Anton Marius Winther, and his christening name as an AKA
name.

Any views on this are very welcome.

[LegacyUG] Quoted Names

2008-01-27 Thread Jan Roberts
Just discovered another problem with reports in the latest build. “Use
quoted names in narrative reports” and “remove quoted given names” do not
appear to work any more. Or rather they do sometimes, but perhaps not when
the option is to alternate between first name and he/she [Firstheshe]. I
haven’t created any reports for some time, so I’m not sure when (i.e. which
version) this stopped working.

I am trying to create a report to send to a fellow descendant and have
already had to go through all my event sentence definitions to change
[inDesc] to in [Desc] now I am going to have to manually change all
instances of Janet Kay “Jan” to Jan in the report.

Also I reported early last year that [CR] does not work in Event notes. So
everywhere I have used [CR] when it DID work now shows as CR in reports.

I will copy this to Legacy Support.

Cheers,

Jan

RE: [LegacyUG] Quoted Names

2008-01-27 Thread Jan Roberts
If I put the [CR] in the event definition it works. But sometimes I want to
have a carriage return before the event notes (and conversely sometimes I
don't - for the same event, but different people). Therefore I don't
necessarily want the CR in the definition. The only way it works is if I
actually hit ENTER before I start typing the notes. Not a big problem, but
I'm certain it used to work as [CR] and I have numerous events entered thus
- and now the coded [CR] in the notes shows as CR so I've got to try to
find them and replace them.
I think I have discovered the culprit in the quoted names issue. Many of
my sentence definitions that I have created over time have used
[GivenHeShe]. They have always worked correctly, and quoted names have
behaved themselves. But it appears that [GivenHeShe] is no longer an
option. If I change the definition to [FirstHeShe] everything works as it
should. Strangely [GivenHeShe] appears to be working in some instances, but
not in others - even for the same event! Go figure! For instance the event
about how I celebrated my 21st birthday was fine. I happened to have two
parties, but the second event read Janet Kay Jan celebrated ...
So now I need to go in and locate and change all instances of the
[GivenHeShe] field.

Jan

Hi Jan,
I think you have some other problem.
There is no problem with quoted name in reports in main sentences or
in event sentences from [FirstHeShe].
No problem with [CR] in Event Sentences.
Build 179
You may try resetting the Report options or deleting the relevant usr.

There is a problem with [inDesc].

[LegacyUG] Event definitions

2008-01-24 Thread Jan Roberts
Can anyone else replicate the problem I have just discovered with one event
definition? To be honest, I am not sure if I created the event from
scratch, or if I modified the existing event definition. I am using the
latest version of 6 Deluxe.

Event – Enlisted

If all fields filled (which they are) - [OnDate] [FirstHeShe] enlisted
[inDesc] [atPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

I know this definition has worked in the past as I have numerous hard copies
of reports where it did work. Today when I created a Descendant Narrative
Report all events seem to be working (as far as I have found while editing a
120 page report) except this Enlisted event. I did originally have [OnDate]
[FirstName] [-EventName] [inDesc] [atPlace].[Sources] [Notes] and the
resulting sentence read: On 5 Feb 1942 [FirstName] [-EventName] and nothing
more! Remember, in this format it DID work in the past.
So, I decided to redefine the event sentence definition, and replaced
[-EventName] with the word enlisted because when I checked several other
event definitions I don’t appear to have used [-EventName] or [EventName].
I also changed [FirstName] to [FirstHeShe]. Now I get On 5 Feb 1942 Baden
enlisted ……nothing more.

Jan

RE: [LegacyUG] Adoption Question

2008-01-05 Thread Jan Roberts
I have a two-names-required situation (because of deed poll, not adoption).
My late first husband changed his name by deed poll before we met. So I
have only known him by his 'chosen' name (which happened to be his mother's
maiden name) and our daughter's surname has always been the 'chosen'
surname. So in Legacy I have entered him with the surname he legally had
all our life together. His siblings are entered with their birth surname -
all to the same set of parents. I have recorded his birth name as an AKA,
but I have also added a Deed Poll event to explain the situation. So in
your case, I would use the surname that the child is known by now and record
the other as an AKA - perhaps with notes in an Adoption event to explain
the circumstances.

Happy New Year!!!

 Glenny,

You can use the Events to add this information.

The default list of events includes Death, however, you could add a new
event entitled Cause of Death and use it accordingly.

RE: [LegacyUG] Congratulatory letters?

2007-12-26 Thread Jan Roberts
I wouldn't add each letter as an event in its own right though - I would
create an event - perhaps 'congratulatory letters' and add the text from all
as part of the notes in the sentence definition for the event. After the
text of the first letter I would add (in the notes) something like - She
also received a letter from xyz which read: ... and then quote the text of
that letter. I'd vary the way I introduced each letter, but I'd only use
the actual event once.

RE: [LegacyUG] Book printing orientation

2007-10-15 Thread Jan Roberts
I don't think you can do it within Legacy - however, I haven't used the
Publishing Centre which allows you to combine charts and narratives. Don't
know if it let's you specify that the charts should be landscape for
instance. However, if you create an RTF file you can divide your book into
sections (Insert Section Next Page) and then alter the page orientation
for a single section. Of course, you have to insert another section break
at the end of the page / pages you want in landscape. Just make sure, when
you change the page set up that you have the cursor in the section you want
changed, and that you choose 'This section' in the dialogue box so it
doesn't change the orientation for the whole document.

Orientation doesn't affect page size - only layout. It is quite common to
have most pages in portrait (higher rather than wide) and occasional pages
landscape (wider rather than high) so you can, for example, fit a wider
table or chart across the page. The book has to be turned to read those
pages, but all pages are the same size.

Err.. I've never seen a book with two different size pages in it.
I'd consider it strange if the orientation *didn't* affect the whole

Maybe a custom paper size of 11 x 11... then orientation wouldn't
matter G

RE: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Chart Title [was Important individuals to your file...]

2007-10-10 Thread Jan Roberts
I don't think it is the title that is the problem - the way I read it La
Nell is regretting that she can't have the actual report start with both
sisters because an Ancestor Report begins with one person and lists that
person's ancestors. Same problem if I want to do an Ancestor report for my
two granddaughters - I have to do a report for each of them - the reports
will be identical except for the starting person.

This might have been asked and answered before, but am thinking that one way
to keep from getting mixed up data on two or more computers would be to make
one computer the prime, and any others read only.

I know I have spent many hours discombobulating things that I excitedly

RE: [LegacyUG] How to enter details of adopted children

2007-09-15 Thread Jan Roberts
Not an adopted children situation - but a surname issue just the same. My
late first husband was born (let's say) Peter George SMITH. His parents
were John SMITH and Jane BLACK, legally married, in a loving relationship
that produced three children. When 'Peter' was just three - his second
sister not yet born - his father died of blood poisoning. Although his
mother remarried some six years later the three children all carried their
father's surname. 'Peter' married, had a family and then the marriage broke
down. Following a rather nasty divorce he chose to make a new life for
himself, complete with a legal name change. By the time I met him he was
legally known as (say) Frederick James BLACK. For my entire marriage I was
Mrs BLACK, my daughter is Miss BLACK. So I have entered 'Frederick's'
parents into Legacy as John SMITH and Jane BLACK, but he is entered as
Frederick BLACK. (Of course this is a little more confusing, BLACK being
his mother's maiden name.) I have recorded his birth name as an AKA, and in
notes. To do otherwise would wrongly give my daughter the surname SMITH,
and would show me as Mrs SMITH - I have never been Mrs SMITH, only Mrs
BLACK.
As Sara says, the primary name must be the name by which the person was / is
generally known.

I think that there are many in the adoption community who would be
offended by the birth name being shown as the primary or real name.
Practically and legally, it is the adoptive name that counts.

RE: [LegacyUG] Names VS AKA

2007-09-11 Thread Jan Roberts
I agree, there are a number of places in reports where I would love the
option of changing wording – some reports seem to have the feature for some
wording and not for others, and other reports don’t even have the feature
for the same wording. (Descendant Reports for instance – one type has
option to change wording re number of children – I can change it to Known
children of ……, yet another descendant report type doesn’t give the same
option.)

However, the other option I mentioned is still an option – create an RTF
report and do a search ‘was also known as – and replace each instance with
something more appropriate. Unfortunately it would be a bit difficult to do
a search and replace because you would probably have to also change the
sentence structure. But at least ‘search’ will find all instances quickly.

Ok - I have to admit that I had thought of the idea and put it up here
before researching it I was figuring on editing the sentence definition
- but of course AKA's aren't a regular event, so they don't have a sentence
definition. Oh well, it was a good idea!

Hi Jay,

Currently there isn't a way to enter a homosexual relationship
properly as the structure of the database assumes that all unions are
male/female.

You can include the partner with the wrong gender and adjust the
wording in the marriage screen to fit. It will look OK in most
reports that don't stop to report whether a spouse is male or
female. You'll have a problem if you include his parents as he'll be
reported as daughter of so it would be better to include them in
the Marriage Notes or an Event.

How many generations are you printing in your report? Check in the
Descendant Book report ‘options’ tab - just below ‘insert underlines for

you know exactly how many generations you’ve got, select All (the number 250
should appear in the box). If this is already the setting I’m not sure why
you aren’t getting everyone.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Finding first names associated with a single surname in
the index

I've been wondering about this for a while

I have almost 1,000 individuals with a single surname in my database
and I would like to be able to find one at the end of the list without
having to scroll through all the first names associated with that
surname. I know that I could sort by first name instead, but
sometimes I need to review several first names within a surname to
 find the right one.

Is there a way to selectively jump to a certain first name associated
 with a single surname?

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy e-mails

2007-08-13 Thread Jan Roberts
I don't think step 3 will result in messages being sent to the Legacy
folder. You will need to type in LegacyUG rather than Legacy User because
the other steps are identifying specific words in the SUBJECT (as opposed to
the sender). If you look at all messages from the User Group you will see
that they all start [LegacyUG] followed by the subject of the message. When
setting up the rule it is not necessary to include the square brackets.

Jan

Valerie -
I am not sure about Outlook 2000, but in Outlook 2003 you can easily route
your mail into folders.

1. Go to Tools: News and Alerts
2. You should be at the Tab for Email Rules; select New Rule
3. The Rules Wizard pops up and will walk you through setting a rule for
what you want. Here is what I selected to automatically move mail into a
Legacy Users folder
1 - Step 1: Stay Organized, Select Move messages with specific
words in the subject to a folder
2 - Look at the second box labeled Step 2: Edit the rule
description. Click on specific words in the subject.
3 - Specific words or phrases: [type] Legacy User, click Add, click
OK
4 - Click on the words Move to a specified folder
5 - A box will pop up showing your email folders; Click New; Name
your folder Legacy Users, click OK
6 - Click Next
7 - Exceptions - do nothing
8 - Name Rule - I call mine LegacyUsersGroup
9 - Run Rule Now - all Legacy Users mail will be moved to your new
folder
10 - Finish

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions.
Denise

RE: [LegacyUG] Event Notes

But, if you have added notes as part of your event sentence structure you
won't turn them off (I don't think). The option to print or not print notes
only relates to Birth / Death / Marriage / General / Research / Medical

RE: [LegacyUG] backup methods problems

I think you will find that you can’t backup directly from Legacy to the DVD
/ CD burner – you will have to back up the multimedia (through Legacy menus)
– locate the resulting backup file on your hard drive and burn that file to
the CD / DVD.

RE: [LegacyUG] backup methods problems

2007-07-14 Thread Jan Roberts
OK Arnie,

Try this.

1. Open Legacy
2. Go to File
3. Select Backup Multimedia files
4. You will see a new, small window with the title Backup Multimedia files
to: and it should have in the Save in box the folder Data
5. Give the backup file a name – eg. Familyfilename multimedia 15.7.07 (i.e
the name that appears in the top of the screen when you open Legacy +
multimedia + today’s date) Click SAVE
• Legacy will find all of the pictures you have attached to people and or
sources – even if they happen to be in different folders on your computer.
• Warning! – Legacy will ‘zip’ these files, which means it compacts them so
they don’t take up as much room as the originals. If at some point you do
need to use these files because something happens to the originals, or
because you want to add them to a Legacy family file on a different computer
you will have to ‘unzip’ them. There are a number of free zip / unzip
programs available on the internet. (I use Zip Genius because it is
genuinely free for personal use – here’s the link HYPERLINK
http://www.download.com/ZipGenius/3000-2250_4-10460064.htmlhttp://www.down
load.com/ZipGenius/3000-2250_4-10460064.html)
6. To save the backup file to your “E” drive you need to open “C” Drive,
find the Legacy Data folder then copy the zip file you have just made to
“E” drive. I am assuming you have Windows XP (or perhaps Vista) in which
there is inbuilt CD writing software. You can use it to write to either a
CD or DVD – depending on how big the files are.

RE: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-21 Thread Jan Roberts
I just wonder why you would delete the source referencing the person who
gave you the information. Why not just add the additional source where you
found the same information - to my mind that would do two things - still
acknowledge the person who gave you the info in the first place, at the same
time giving added strength to the validity of the information because it
would show that two sources say the same thing.

I agree with all that Dermot says. I do the same thing, too. And then when I

find the information for myself, I deleted the source as the person that
gave me the information and enter the source where I found the information;
i.e., census records, Social Security Death Index, Family History Center
microfilms, etc. At least I have a starting point with people and dates with

the information that's been given me.

What I'm doing (and I'm not saying this is right for you, but it is
for me) is I've decided to record these details, all with the source
as this gentleman. Then, when I get a chance (that may be some
time!!) I'll research each one myself, and add whatever other sources
 I find.

RE: [LegacyUG] Not sure what to do. Can U help

2007-06-21 Thread Jan Roberts
In that case I would enter the correct date in the Individual screen, and
make a note that *my cousin* had originally provided such and such as the
birth date. That date would no longer need a source, because it wouldn't
exist in my database any more - but I would still want to remember that
there had been an alternative date provided by whoever. In regards to the
partial versus full date, I would show in Detail Text that *my cousin*
provided 1876 as the birth year, and in Detail Text for the full date source
I would show 1/3/1876. That way it would be obvious which part of the date
each source is referenced to.

It's fine to acknowledge the person that originally gave me the information;

however, sometimes she gives me month and year or just year of death and
then when I look at the SSDI I find the full date. So if I leave the source
citing my cousin's information and also the SSDI source, won't that appear
that the full date was given to me by my cousin when in fact she only gave
me a partial date? That's why I delete her as a source and use the source
where I got complete information. Same goes for incorrect information from
my cousin. Since she gave me no source for where she got the death date and
SSDI has a different date which I believe to be the correct one, to keep her

as a source for the SSDI date would be inconsistent with the information she

gave me. Lots of angles here.

Hi Jan,
You just use Alt0160 but you need to use the numbers on the keypad
and not the numbers above the letters.
When you enter it you should see the cursor move along the line.

Another work around - add [CR] - that's the code for a Carriage
Return so that the Notes start on the next line.

Jan,

I haven't checked whether this works, but it is necessary to have your
number pad on and then hold down Alt while pressing all the digits 0160 on
the number pad.

Yes C. G. – but sometimes I can’t see what is staring me in the face!
Nothing wrong with your instructions – just with the way I (didn’t) follow
them!

Well, I tried the hard space ‘fix’ and it didn’t seem to work. Do you have
to use the spacebar and then Alt0160 or just Alt0160?

Cheers,

Jan

In the some Wording 2 tab in Report settings, instead of a space after the
colon, enter what is often referred to as a hard space (Alt 0160, hold down
the Alt key and enter 0160 on the numeric keypad). It worked for me and is a
lot easier than fixing it in Word or Acrobat.

Ruth,

I have not checked this out, and haven't really got time at present, so I
don't know if it is a general problem. If so, I would try changing the
sentence construction to include a space before the She, He etc.

I am using Legacy version 6.0.0.127. In any of the Book reports, there is a

missing space after the colon in General Notes:, Birth Notes:, and Death
Notes:; i.e., Birth Notes:She was born, etc.

I haven't been able to find a place to correct it and have to do a global
Replace in my Word document. The same thing happens if I create the report
in PDF so I can't send that report to anyone because I'm not able to
correct it.

Any suggestions how to get that missing space back?
