Re: [LegacyUG] Problem opening file
I have deleted the 'suspicious' files and ran a repair on the database and we are again 'up and running'. Thanks for the support. Rob On Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 11:08 PM, Dennis M. [LegacyUG] Problem opening file
I try to open Legacy (v6) and get an error from a file that was opened earlier that day. The error is in Dutch, but translated it would read something like: Error opening Database Cannot lock the file Want to try again? Whatever I choose after this, the file will not open. When trying to copy some files to 'play around' and try to open I get an error when trying to copy family.ldb. The other files seem to be OK. The error I get when trying to copy this file is that the file cannot be copied as it is corrupt or unreadable. Can someone advice..yes, the backup is from some time ago, so I can recover most of it. But I do not know anymore exactly what I did after the last backup was made. Can I (e.g.) delete that file and still open 'the core' of my database? Is there somewhere in the help files an explanation as to the meaning of these files (I count 6 of them for my last family opened and only 3 from other family that I have not opened long time). Thanks for helping, Rob
RE: [LegacyUG] Problem opening file
Rob, I do not understand what you are getting at. The Legacy file for your database is the one with the .fdb extension not .ldb, I cannot remember what the latter is for, but Legacy will not open it if you just double click the file, but the other files in this folder generally contain data which the user has created. Re: [LegacyUG] Problem opening file
Ron, thanks for reactingI know that perhaps some of the files contain temporary info (e.g. what I entered the last time?). I also see that I now have more files than for 'older' databases for which I have only a .fdb, .FG and a .TC file. From the 'problem' database I have (next to these files) also a .ldb, .PPL and .RGD file. Would it be an option to only copy the .fdb file into a save place and (re)start from there, only to loose the changes of the last time? Possibly Legacy did not close correctly?? RE: [LegacyUG] Problem opening file
Rob, I have only come across the cannot unlock file in connection with encrypted files, so I cannot explain what is going on. I take it that when you try to open your .fdb file from Legacy you get the error message - is no number given? Also is there any chance that you have a shortage of memory? There would be no problem in copying the .fdb file to somewhere else on your PC and I would also rename it and then try to load by double clicking the file, or right clicking and use Open with First, though, I would shut down my PC and leave it for a while and then try again. Re: [LegacyUG] Problem opening file
This is, admittedly, a long shot, but could a corrupted systems file be the culprit? It certainly wouldn't hurt to run the Windows repair routine.
