[LegacyUG] Allegation Bond

2012-01-27 Thread Mike Fry
Hi All,

This is probably of more interest to the UK members, since it refers
specifically to documents relating to UK marriages.

I have images of the Allegation Bond taken out by an ancestor of mine in 1766.
The Allegation is what was sworn by the groom in order to obtain a Marriage
License that enabled him to marry is intended bride. The License was, of course,
handed to the church in which the marriage took place and no longer exists,
having been 'converted' into the appropriate entry in the Marriage Register. The
Bond was taken out in order to impress on the groom that what he was proposing
was viewed as a serious business by the ecclesiastical authorities. In this, he
undertakes to pay the Bishop 200GBP if he fails to marry the girl!. A formality,
I'm sure, but nevertheless that is what the sum mentioned is.

My questions are: Where is the SourceWriter template for the Allegation? And,
what template should I use for the Bond? Bear in wind that these are digital
images of papers (I think they're loose) help by the LMA.

The one I used for an Allegation is Marriage recordsfound in

You would, of course, use Online images rather than the Basic format
option. (I have a photocopy of the original.)

[LegacyUG] the value of the to-do list

Going with Online Images sort of implies that there's a website involved. But
they're not readily available online. Having paid my money, the LMA sent me the
images, so I have them on my machine or as a printed copy. So, Basic Format will
do for me :-)

[LegacyUG] Script errors on Research Guidance

2012-01-27 Thread Marilyn Clark
I just began trying to use the Research Guidance features; but get a popup
Script Error on many of my requests. I was on tab 2 Preliminary Survey,
tried to search Pedigree Resource File and go An error has occurred in the
scripts at the page.

Line 220
Char 30
Error: Unspecified error
Code:0
URL: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/includes/s_code_remote2.js

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes -- No

If I answer no, it brings up the appropriate website and I can search, but
after I start the search, another script error occurs. This is similar for
several of the websites offered for me to search.

Anyone else having this problem?

Re: [LegacyUG] the value of the to-do list

2012-01-27 Thread Gail
I have used Legacy through many versions and have tried to use the to
do list many times, and I must be missing something. I have not been
able to get it to function as I would like it to. Fortunately, Legacy
does allow me to do something that works for me and maybe it would work
for others. I have created an event labeled 1 To Do (because I wanted
it at the top of the list). In the description, I put what it is I'm
looking for, ie 1930 census. I have the area in the notes for keeping
track of things that I want to remember. I can use the date and the
location if there is something that fits easily into those spots.

For my Dad, I have the 1930 census as the to do, and because he was only
6 years old at the time, and his father had left his mother, he has been
difficult to find. I know from him that he was staying with his
paternal grandparents - found their census and he's not listed. Checked
his maternal grandparents and his Mom and brother were there, but not
him. I've looked into the siblings of both grandparents in case he was
there - nope... I've looked through the 1930 census for the area that
he could be because he was also hospitalized around that time so thought
maybe he would be listed there... nope...

All this to say, I can look at that to do and I see the places that I've
looked already and giving myself a tracking device. Because it is an
event, I can look for that as the event name and then add 1930 census in
the description to my search. Or I can search for all things that might
be listed at Ancestry.com. I haven't been able to figure out a way to
do all that using the To Do list and I'm not saying that it isn't
there. I have the 1 to do event listed as private so it does not
print on anything unless I want it to. This is one of the things I
appreciate about the user group - I learn something new fairly often and
maybe, one day the To Do List will be something I will use too.

Re: [LegacyUG] Allegation Bond

2012-01-27 Thread brittongen
Marriage Allegations were involved whenever a marriage was by Bishop's Licence,
recorded in the bishop's records, hence that's a place to look when a parish
register indicates a marriage other than by Banns, or because no marriage
record can be found in the couple's parish registers. It's church business,
literally, as it provides the church for compensation for the hassles resulting
if the marriage does not take place or must be vacated - lost fee(s) and extra
work for which there is no standing fee schedule. An example is a licence to
wed issued to a minor because of false representation of age which must be
annulled with action taken for broken law(s).

The bishop's record will normally list all conditions imposed, what is alleged
that was relied on by the bishop in making his decision, and the source and
amount of the bond. Frequently, the couple will be given the option of two
churches, neither of which need be the home parish of either. No data will be
specified, but I think a time period may apply. The bond must be credible, so
it infers the financial status of the bondsman, a third party suggesting a poor
groom resorting to family support or services of a bondsman. Other information
may be available through no other record. (Victorian era study, matching
surviving Bishops Records at Wells, Somerset, to parish ones and vice versa
parish by Licence records to Bishop's, concluded that as many as 50% of all
marriage records were lost - and that was before WWII bombing burnt the county
archives...)

Two cases from my family: One Allegation asserted the bride's father's
permission, giving her age as 27 and her surname, found nowhere else. Another
Licence gave two parish options, neither the adjacent parishes of the couple,
and that the bride was a widow. Follow up found the marriage record, then her
earlier marriage at the same parish, giving her maiden name and family plus a
different spelling for her first husband's surname and his home parish, where
she later resided as a widow. Both husbands were of yeoman class with extended
families 3 miles apart, so the Licence options of the bride's original parish
or another NOT either home parish and inconveniently distant. That suggested a
schism within the second husband's family, of which he was the heir, based on
opposition to the widow. He and his son died nearly simultaneously, leaving a
minor grandson who seems to have been dispossessed by family management of
his patrimony. He moved away 50 or so miles at his majority and was the
husband of the first allegation above.

Jenny is probably right about the best place for such records in Legacy, as
they are church business records, not religious ones. I couldn't agree more
with wish for Legacy support regarding what real UK sources are and what they
reveal. That's probably too much to hope for as a program feature, but could
something be seeded into a context sensitive Help menu? Or perhaps a link to
an online web page discussing such?

There has been no information released about a Version 8, but I think you can
rest assured that it will not happen with the next month or so. It is also
their usual practice to allow those who purchased a current version just prior

RE: [LegacyUG] Webinar recording now online

2012-01-27 Thread Mark Lang
Colin,

Just tried this link, again (already watched), and from Australia, and it
worked for me and I use a slow wi-fi access to Internet.

I suggest you purge your browser cache then reboot your pc and see if this
helps.

Kind Regards
Mark Lang

 Geoff,

Ihave just tried to watch the recording of Discovering your
 Massachusetts
Ancestors and all I get is a black page, I have tried a number of
 times and
 still the same result.
I get a message n the bottom left of screen telling me Transferring
 data
from www.milleniacorp.com then when finished the screen stays black.
I have tried other recordings with the same result.
Anyone else having the same problem?

Thanks for the info Ron! In that case, I'm going to take the plunge!

Tom,

There has been no information released about a Version 8, but I think you
can rest assured that it will not happen with the next month or so. It is
also their usual practice to allow those who purchased a current version
just prior to the release of a new one to upgrade for free – and to date
there has been no such announcement.

Hi everyone, I just signed up for the email list. I'm currently using
free Version 7.5, but I'm considering upgrading to the paid version. Under
the assumption that the next major upgrade (Version 8.0) won't come as a
freebie, has anyone heard anything about when that might be coming out? It
would be just my luck to sign up for the paid Version 7.5, then have to do
it all over again for Version 8.0 a month from now!

 Cheers!

 Tom

Re: [LegacyUG] Use of the term SIC

2012-01-27 Thread Nancy Stevens
I think sic is generally used when there are spelling or typographical
errors in the material quoted as a way of telling the reader that the
errors are in the original text and not transcription errors. Like you, I
do not use sic unless I think it is absolutely necessary.

It seems very over-used, at times, when simple quotes would do. Or,
perhaps I misunderstand its suggested usage. Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Use of the term SIC

2012-01-27 Thread Wendy Howard
I didn't understand what you meant before, Jerry, until I saw Nancy's reply.

You may like to look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sic

I'd normally use square brackets to indicate that it's an editing
comment. [sic]

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy
