RE: [LegacyUG] Make a duplicate of a person
That would certainly enter the last used entries into vital events, but not notes, events, sources etc etc. The other suggestion was to copy the person to a new database and then copy them back in, which worked like a charm Jack -Original Message- From: ct...@centurytel.net [mailto:ct...@centurytel.net] Sent: 19 February 2012 03:41 To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Make a duplicate of a person Is it possible to, effectively, copy paste a person to create a second person with the same name and details? Several days ago I sent the simplest way I know to copy a persons page, but the problem continued with no indication anyone had seen that post. I got a copy, but I was wondering if anyone else did. To copy a person, bring the page up as if you were going to edit it, but don't change anything, then save it. The main part of that page is then in Legacy memory somewhere, and all you need to do is click on the title of each entry you want, such as name, date or place. I don't think that will copy events or sources that way, but all the vital records on the main page will copy that way. You can even copy to another data base, as the memory doesn't care what name is on the database. Re: [LegacyUG] Genviewer
I found GenViewer indispensable when I was importing another file into Legacy. During Legacy's import/merge process, if someone popped up that I had a question about, I could view the same file with GenViewer to see other views about that person and how they were linked to others. Thus allowing me to make a more educated answer to Legacy's questions. Bob On 02/18/2012 11:00, Ron Taylor wrote: It would be impossible to give a short answer to your question because GenViewer is really loaded with features. I will give you a few things that I really like: 1) When viewing a database in the List tab, you can click on the column headings to sort the list like you would expect in a windows based list program. You can also customize the columns much like you would do in a spreadsheet. 2) You can have a filtered selection of the database highlighted in the lists. For example, on the Highlighting panel I asked that those with a spouse surname equal Price be shown. They are now very easy to spot in the list. 3) The File Search panel will locate all genealogical files on your computer. 4) GenViewer can open most genealogical files directly without conversion. 5) You can produce and print many reports that are not available in Legacy or elsewhere. GenViewer was written by Luc who Millennia brought in-house to head up the nFS interface project called LegacyFS. Great programming, incredible price. As Dennis Kowallek indicated in his reply, you are seeing the special codes inserted into the rtf file for various purposes. RE: [LegacyUG] Using Word for descendant report
Elisabeth, perhaps you could send a screenshot of what you mean but think you mean the formating information needed from Word. Upto now I don't see a reason to use the RTF Output. With the RTF Output we lose a lot of information from the Standard Output (Screen/Printer). E.g. Position and formating of the included pictures. Most pictures don't have the same size and alignment. The Table of Contents Index of Names have to be created again. The Index of Locations is missing. As an example with 7 Generations. With the Standard Output I get 24 pages with all information. With the RTF Output I get 38 pages with the above information missing. The Standard Output takes in my case about 10 second to creat. The RTF Output takes about the same time for the basic file with a lot of information lost. To get the RTF to like the Standrard Output takes hours every time created and that for adding just one date. Why use it. Something to think about. Re: [LegacyUG] [Legacy UG] v 149 download installs bad file
Hi, Ron- When I said Legacy update itself I meant that I let the application do the update from the prompt that suggests I should do that; I did not do a manual update. When I said renamed the file I meant that I used the Windows XP file rename function to rename it to Legacy7.lng.old to see if the file was an old one on my machine or a file that Legacy included in the download. It was the latter, because Legacy7.lng ( with the 31JAN date) reappeared after the download. When I said the file I meant the file in the error message quoted in my message, ie., Legacy7.lng. As I mentioned, I reinstalled the update from the website with the same results. Sorry if I wasn't clear on those points. Re: [LegacyUG] Sources not copying to clipboard.
Hi Brian, What I am doing is: I add an event Social Security Death Index, then add the data to the notes. Then add a pre existing and long used source Social Security Death Index to the event and add source details. Then in the source window, while the SSDI source is highlighted, click the copy to source clipboard button, then click overwrite existing source, then go to the fact where I want to place it, say Death. Then click add clipboard source to current event, and I get a screen that says No master source has been selected. I clearly copied the original source with details to the clipboard but it is not being saved with the details entered. What is added is the SSDI source with no details. Suggestions? Re: [LegacyUG] [Legacy UG] v 149 download installs bad file
Problem solved. I deleted the Legacy7.lng file rather than rename it, and the installer liked that. The correct file is now installed. Thanks for listening! Katherine C. King wrote: Hi, Ron- When I said Legacy update itself I meant that I let the application do the update from the prompt that suggests I should do that; I did not do a manual update. [LegacyUG] 'Missing.txt' Report
I need some guidance from Tech Support or anyone who can help or explain this issue. I installed version 149 and it seems to work OK but this issue has been going on for some time. My problem is that when I go to Options-- Customize -- Locations and then ‘test all Multimedia Paths’, I get a multi-page listing of errors – most of which are identified as ‘Sound/Video’ discrepancies. I have even removed the ‘Sounds’ and the ‘Videos’ from the ‘Master /Sound/Video/File path’ but that didn’t stop the errors from appearing. Since I DO NOT HAVE EITHER VIDEOS OR SOUNDS FILES IN LEGACY, where do these errors come from and why does the error list show ‘Sound/Video:’? I have discovered a possible connection in that when I add a ‘file’ to the ‘Source Detail’-- ‘Multimedia’, this causes the error to be created on the multi-page error report when I run my ‘Location’ check. However, if I remove this multimedia file from the detail and add this same ‘file’ to the ‘Pictures’ on the ‘Edit Source’ option, the file error is no longer seen on the error listing. By way of explanation, I have all my detail sources scanned into ‘C://Legacy/Docs’ and have been adding these as ‘multimedia‘ to the detail records – or at least until this issue arose, now I suppose I need to remove all detail multimedia files!!. Isn’t it possible to consider a ‘file’ as a ‘multimedia’ item when I add it to the ‘edit Detail’ feature? Or is the ‘Pictures’ on the Source file the only place that one should place a picture or a ‘Docs’ file? Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 7.5 and source citation import?
Jackie Thanks for pointing that out for those who don't know it. I'm familiar with the limitations of GEDCOM, and I don't blame Legacy for the problems. The point I was trying to make is that it's possible to have citations that conform to EE standards by using Legacy's Basic Sources. Until SW sources can transfer without mangling, I'm going to stick to Basic Sourcing. Hope you're feeling better. It seems half the people I know have been sick with the flu recently. Mary *** From: Jackie King jskin...@gmail.com Mary - Sorry for how late this response is - I've been up and down with the flu so much in the past week or so that I hoped someone would point this out. What I think many fail to realize as they attempt to import and export sourcing via gedcoms is that gedcom itself does not support advanced sourcing such as some of that supported by Legacy and other programs and at times it also cannot support multiple sourcing. It's not a problem with Legacy - but with the Gedcom standard as it now is. Work is being done on what is called Gedcom X but I haven't kept up with it sufficiently to know if this is something that is being addressed or not. I think many times when we look at what happens to our databases in transferring through Gedcom we are blaming Legacy for things that are actually problems with Gedcom. And it is important to remember that Gedcom is not just a Legacy tool. I've found it best to do it one source at a time. It's possible with Basic sources to figure out a way to match EE sources, but it takes a bit of forethought to do it. Since I have almost 2,000 sources (and, no, I'm not an extreme splitter) almost 50,000 citations, it's taking a lot of time, but I'm catching things I'd entered wrong when I first started, so it's worth it. Date: Wed, 15 Feb 2012 12:02:15 -0800 I have been following both these threads and have come to the conclusion that SourceWriter is not all it's cracked up to be. I stopped using SW several months ago and have been contemplating returning to Basic Sources. After following this discussion, I have decided to do that. I know most Legacy users are converting their Basic sources to SW. I am going to convert mine back to Basic. Any comments on how best to do that? We are sill on topic: getting the source and the text comment to appear together in the footnote/endnote.Ãâ Footnotes and Endnotes work the same, just a matter of where they appear and another one of those personal preferences.Ãâ I use both depending on how the report in used; when reviewing a cousins work it is easier to have the footnotes option on.. This way the notes appear on the same page as the event cited. I solved the import riddle with the help of Ward and others, but have not found a solution toÃâ subsequent citations not including the text notes. A good example would be the 1900 or 1910 census as a source for a persons name, birth year andÃâ state, and marriage year.Ãâ The first usage appears as it should with the text, but the two subsequent source citations only appear as the source with out the text. One for birth year and state and the other for marriage year; two identical entries.Ãâ Ãâ I the same source is used for a child, itÃâ would appear less the text even if other sources are cited in between.
