First of all, another program data cannot be imported into Legacy, without making a GEDCOM from within the other program. Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom file for a specific family surname only - I don't understand how to do it.
Hi Terry, I have received a big Gedcom from a cousin and would like to make a gedcom file on just the Powers line containing maybe 100 names from his 7000 name database. I have tried many options and all I get is the entire 7000 name gedcom file. I am at a loss as to how to do this. You need to import that 7000-name GEDCOM file into Legacy, then work with that file to extract the information you want. Say you call it Cousin.fdb for talking about it here. What I would do, with Cousin.fdb open, is then save another copy of it - say, Cousin-Powers.fdb (File Save Family File As...). Right now it contains all 7000 names from the original file, but that's going to change. Now, with Cousin-Powers.fdb open, identify the people In the Powers family whom you want to keep. How you do that depends on whether they're all linked together or not. If they're not all connected, you could tag them, then tag the rest of the file with a different tag and the delete those that are tagged with the second tag. I'm guessing, though, that the Powers people in this file are all linked together. In that case, unlink them from the people you don't want to keep in this file, so they stand alone in a tree by themselves. For example, you might have a Thomas Powers and his wife Elizabeth, who you want to keep, but you don't want to keep Elizabeth's parents, siblings and other members of her family - unlink Elizabeth from her parents. Do you know about Tree Finder in Legacy? View Tree Finder. Be sure to click on Refresh to update the tree list, as this is not done automatically. When you've unlinked the Powers family from everyone else in the file, you'll be able to identify that tree amongst the others at Tree Finder. Then you can click on each of the other trees, one at a time, and tag that entire tree with a tag you've previously selected. Presumably you've not set any tags on this file yet, so you can use any and the default Tag 1 is just fine. Do that for all the trees you don't want to keep in this file (remembering that this is a copy, the original Cousin.fdb is untouched). When you're done, everyone in the file, except for those in the Powers tree, should be tagged. Then go to Advanced Deleting (Tools Advanced Deleting) and delete all individuals tagged on that tag that you used. I wouldn't bother with confirming each record in this instance - if you make a mistake, you can go back and start again with another copy of Cousin.fdb, which is quicker than confirming each of the 6900 records! Yes, I've done that before, LOL!! If it were a different circumstance, where I couldn't go back and start again so easily, I would confirm each deletion. And make a backup before I started on this project. Now you've got just the Powers family left in your file, and it's ready for you to move on to whatever you want to do with that information - import it into another file, create another GEDCOM, etc. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). [LegacyUG] Universal Source?
I have a weird question. I have a friend building me a Legacy file of names from a specific inigration event (a ship and travel list) which will include almost 500 families, and over 1500 people. Once I have that, I will be doing descendancy research on those families for a historic recreation. Does anyone know if it is possible to add a single source to all events recorded when I get the file, or will I need to go through event by event and add the website information she is getting the data from for me? Then I can continue on with additional research and sources. Thanks. On the Options window click AutoSource at the bottom of window. 4. Choose Add one source entry per record (in Unspecified)OR Add source to all incoming fields that have information 5. Click Select a Master Source, a new window will open 6. Click the Add button to create a new Master Source OR 6a. Click Options button and select Import Lists 6b. Browse for a Family File to Import Lists From: 6c. Click/select the Master Sources button and click Import Lists button. 6d. You should now be able to select a Master Source from the list 7. Does anyone know if it is possible to add a single source to all events recorded when I get the file, or will I need to go through event by event and add the website information she is getting the data from for me? Re: [LegacyUG] We just upgraded our mail server
Those of us with an assembly language/UNIX background and who have been programming and using computers since before there was an Internet are quite familiar with the RFCs and are frustrated by the failure of current software products to follow the RFC. A competent programmer would know the RFCs applicable to his program and not release it if it does not meet the requirements of the RFC. We also realize that most people have no knowledge of or interest in what the RFCs attempt to do. Just because we don't spend a lot of time complaining doesn't mean we like the situation. Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcewriter conversion to Basic
Lew Converting SourceWriter sources back to Basic will work with a GEDCOM, and you're not going to lose information. What you lose is any bolding or italics that you've added or that SourceWriter used. What also happens is that the order of the elements in the source changes and what it refers to may not be obvious because the GEDCOM doesnt transfer words such as page, household number etc. that are built into the SourceWriter. Youll also get extra commas and semi-colons. It also loses the access date. Heres an example from my files. Here is a source written with SourceWriter: 1850 U.S. census, Jackson County, Illinois, population schedule, South District, p. 260B, taken 23 Oct 1850, dwelling 396, family 407, Jesse Gorden household; digital images, Ancestry.com (http:/www.ancestry.com : accessed 30 May 2010); citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm M432, roll 110. Here is the same source after GEDCOM transfer: 1850 U.S. census, population schedule, Jackson County, Illinois, , , ; digital images, Ancestry.com (http:/www.ancestry.com : accessed ); citing National Archives and Records Administration microlfilm series M432, 110, South District; 260B, 23 Oct 1850; 396, 407; Jesse Gorden; 31 May 2009. You can see its hard to tell what some of the numbers mean. I suggest you backup your file and try it to see what it will look like.
