[LegacyUG] Is this possible?
Is it possible to go back to the previous Legacy version before this last update? The last update did something to my Legacy file and I can't fix it. Tech support worked on it for quite a while yesterday and they can't figure it out. In a nut shell, my main file is okay. However, if I try to export, whether to another Legacy file or a GEDCOM, the resulting file is corrupt. I get an error 3021 if I try and use the clipboard to copy an event. It doesn't matter what I tell the program to export or not export. It gets even better. If I try and open the exported GEDCOM using RootsMagic, the RM file then has an error. I can see the list of names on the left side but if I click on anyone nothing happens at all. This is definitely an exporting issue because my main file remains perfectly okay. I can copy and paste events to my heart's content. The problem I am having is that I have lost 2 full days of work and I am working on a project with a deadline. If I can't get this resolved, I am going to have to switch over to RootsMagic for this project which I do not want to do. I am just not familiar enough with RM and that means I will be going very S L O W. [LegacyUG] P.S.
I forgot to mention something. This happens when I start a new file from scratch too. That is why I would have to use RootsMagic for this project. This morning I thought I would just bite the bullet and start a new file instead of importing some people to get me started. That new file wouldn't work either. The only thing that is working is my main file. So, I would have to start from scratch using RootMagic. The only good thing about it is that I can have my main file on one screen and RM on the other making the data entry a bit easier. Re: [LegacyUG] Same gender marriage???
That's correct Cheryl. Legacy is not owned nor controlled by the church. Not only would it require extensive re-writing of Legacy's code to allow same-sex relationships, there would also be a ripple effect that would affect several of the Legacy add-on programs made by other companies. As with any company, the personal values and religious beliefs of the owners influence how the company operates. It is Legacy’s prerogative to not have same sex marriages within the program. Interesting thread. I have requested this feature for some time and realize the programming implications described by Sherry. RE: [LegacyUG] Is this possible?
Michele, I thought this was addressed in the last few days where someone from Legacy support did say that it’s possible to download an older version, and providing that you have a backup from that previous version, you could restore and continue to use the older version. That’s okay. It will be too much of a risk because not only would I have to uninstall and reinstall an earlier version, I would have to revert to a back up that was made before the last update because the last update converted my file. Sorry. Ron Ferguson Sent from my Xperia™ smartphone Michele Lewis ancestor...@gmail.com wrote: That’s okay. Michele, I’ve looked at the archive and can’t find it, but I know I’m not dreaming. It might very well have been posted on the LegacyFS list, which unfortunately (no idea why) does not have an archive. (I’ve deleted my copy of Legacy FS posts). Has anybody out there retained copies of LegacyFS posts from Aug 13 onwards? Paul From: Paul Gray [mailto:graypa...@outlook.com] Sent: August-17-13 8:59 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Is this possible? Michele, I thought this was addressed in the last few days where someone from Legacy support did say that it’s possible to download an older version, and providing that you have a backup from that previous version, you could restore and continue to use the older version. It was in the context of ‘what happens if the latest update (Aug 13) which does a file conversion somehow corrupts the file’. Not exactly your situation as your converted working file seems fine. I can’t find it in the archives but will continue looking. Paul Gray From: Michele Lewis [mailto:ancestor...@gmail.com] Sent: August-17-13 6:06 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Is this possible? Is it possible to go back to the previous Legacy version before this last update? The last update did something to my Legacy file and I can’t fix it. Tech support worked on it for quite a while yesterday and they can’t figure it out. In a nut shell, my main file is okay. However, if I try to export, whether to another Legacy file or a GEDCOM, the resulting file is corrupt. I get an error 3021 if I try and use the clipboard to copy an event. It doesn’t matter what I tell the program to export or not export. It gets even better… If I try and open the exported GEDCOM using RootsMagic, the RM file then has an error. I can see the list of names on the left side but if I click on anyone nothing happens at all. This is definitely an exporting issue because my main file remains perfectly okay. I can copy and paste events to my heart’s content. The problem I am having is that I have lost 2 full days of work and I am working on a project with a deadline. If I can’t get this resolved, I am going to have to switch over to RootsMagic for this project which I do not want to do. I am just not familiar enough with RM and that means I will be going very S L O W. Hi Howland, I'll try to explain a bit better but using one of my own blended families as an example Under Tools Set Direct Line as Preferred .. when I set myself as the root person for that, then I have my Dad my Mum correctly showing for my Dad's marriage. However, if I was to use a child of one of my half-siblings from my dad's first marriage, and set them as the root person for the Tools Set Direct Line as Preferred... then when I look at my father's Family view, it shows his first wife, not his preferred wife, because it is showing the direct line of the designated person. Michelle do you have access to another computer with the same or a newer operating system on it? If so I would install the latest version of Legacy on that and restore your database from your backup. If everything works ok on the second machine, it may suggest that something has actually been corrupted in either your OS or your legacy.exe file on the first machine. Re: [LegacyUG] Preferred Spouse
Howland; If you are changing the Root preferred person and then using the set preferred line, for any other person besides yourself, then the setting for any preferred ancestors of the Root person will be changed to become the natural ancestor or the root person. (as Kathy described in her example) If you are fairly new to Legacy, you should always read the HELP file for any menu item you click on to ensure you understand what changes it can/will.should make. As the HELP for SET DIRECT LINE READS: *Set Preferred Line* As you move from younger generations to older one in both the *Family View*and the *Pedigree View*, Legacy automatically chooses the preferred parents of the current individual. (You can change the preferred parents, if there are more than one set, by right-clicking on an individual and choosing *View / Parents List*.) As you move back down to younger generations, you will often get lost because you can't remember which child to select. You can have Legacy automatically reset all the direct line ancestors of a specified individual to be preferred and display them in a bold typeface. This way, as you navigate up and down through the generations, you can find your way back down the same way as you went up. (In the Family View, you can click to the right or left of the *Children* window to automatically select the preferred child to be moved up to the Husb/Wife position. This is a fast way to move back down a preferred line.) *To set all the direct-line ancestors of a particular individual as preferred:* 1. Display the *Set Direct Line Ancestors as Preferred Line* window by choosing *Set Direct Line as Preferred* from the *Tools* menu. 2. Make sure the starting individual is shown in the text box. If you need to select a different person, click *Change*. 3. Click *Set Preferred Line* to automatically mark each ancestor as the preferred one. Now, when you move back down to younger generations, each preferred child is marked with an asterisk. You can either double-click the preferred child or click to the right of left of the *Child List* to move the preferred child up to the current Husb/Wife position. (Note, to turn on the bold names feature, you must select the *Indicate direct-line children in lists *option on the *Data Format *tab of the *Options Customize *window. See Customize - Data Format for more information.) Re: [LegacyUG] Preferred Spouse
The Preferred Spouse is set to the individual, the person whose spouses you are looking at. Click on the spouse icon (in Family View that's the single person of the opposite sex at the left-hand end of the icons in the husband and wife boxes) and another window will open up listing the spouses for that person. One of the spouses listed will have an asterisk (*) in the P column - that's the preferred spouse for this particular person. By default it is the first spouse attached to that person. If there is more than one spouse, you can choose which spouse will be the preferred one - that means that when you navigate to this person (not the spouse), this is the spouse who will appear next to them. It has no bearing on which is the first spouse or how they will appear in reports, that is determined using the Order arrows to sort them as you wish them to appear. It bears no connection to what relationships are set in your file, as suggested previously. Its purpose is to determine which spouse will appear next to the individual you navigate to. I don't know what the problem is that Howland isn't getting the result he should be seeing. Howland, I presume you've closed down Legacy and rebooted your computer since this all started? It's sounding to me like you need to contact Support for this, if you haven't already. Re: [LegacyUG] Preferred Spouse
Wendy, I beg to differ You said *It bears no connection to what relationships are set in your file,** as* *suggested previously. Its purpose is to determine which spouse will appear next to the individual you navigate to.* If you use the Set Preferred line that WILL change an ancestors spouse to preferred if it wasnt already. And then if you navigate back to someone who is not a descendant of the couple to whom the preferred setting was changed, it will stay that way, until you manually change it back, or until you select a descendant of the original preferred couple and set preferred line. Does that make sense? Jay On Sat, Aug 17, 2013 at 5:58 PM, Wendy Howard wendy.how...@gmail.comwrote: The Preferred Spouse is set to the individual, the person whose spouses you are looking at. Re: [LegacyUG] How much information is too much
Just out of curiosity, where or what type of sources would you look at to try and find out the types of crops or number and type of animals were present on a farm at a particular point in time (say 1850-1940)? I have LOTS of farmers in my tree and I'd love to get some ideas on what types of sources I should be looking for. RE: [LegacyUG] How much information is too much
Census farm schedules. VERY enlightening. Also probates of estates; if you're lucky it will include an inventory of every little thing. But you should be on Facebook genealogy groups for that question, or join genealogy organizations in your area for their meetings and newsletters.
