[LegacyUG] Legacy *

2013-11-26 Thread Mike Fry
I'm sure that this must be possible, but before I commit to Legacy 8.0, I want
to first evaluate it - without removing my current, Deluxe version 7.5. So, I'm
looking for information that will allow me to install 8.0 alongside 7.5

Couldn't see anything on the website.

Hi Mike,

It's possible to install it to a different location and run both versions at
the same time.

I've set up a testing folder with a couple of databases and pointed V8 to that
location whilst I evaluate the software.

Mike,

I do not know which PC you have but if Win 7+ Legacy 8 installs in the program
files and your data should be copied to a folder on Documents.

For other PCs you can change the name as before.

So no conflicting. The usual caveats re backups etc. apply.

Using Win7 Home Premium 32-bit. Legacy 7.5 already in C:\Legacy.

I see that the installation program will require Administrator rights from UAC,
and that the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Legacy8. That's a
good start :-) C:\Program Files\Legacy7 should have been where 7.5 went in the
first place.

I also note that the default data folder is no longer C:\Legacy\Data, but \My
Documents\Legacy Family Tree. Again, something that could have been done earlier
in the evolution of the product.

Problem 1
=
I couldn't find the Customize icon! It Wasn't on the ribbon. So I uninstalled so
that I could try from scratch again.

Reason for no icon: didn't complete the Guided Setup wizard. Ribbon was very
incomplete.

Problem 2
=
Uninstallation left a lot of files around in \Program Files\Legacy8 - SOME 138Mb
of files

But... Got there eventually :-)

At step 12 in Dave's directions he tells you to choose the entire ancestor line
for the copy. If there are cross connections due to intermarriages in those
ancestral lines then that option will select descendants of those connected
ancestor lines. That can cause Legacy to include extra lines because of those
descendants.

At step 12 change your selection to Direct line ancestors only. That will
prevent those extra descendants from being included.

[LegacyUG] Thank you for Legacy 8

I wanted to say thank you to the developers for Legacy 8. Although I have
barely scratched the surface of the many changes, additions, and
enhancements, I have to say thank you for the one item that I have
requested several times over the past few years - shared events. This is
the one missing item that has kept me vacillating between Legacy, and the

finally have this ability in Legacy, I don't see me jumping around anymore.

New version 8.0 Continues 15-Years of Innovation and Quality; Now Offers
Migration Mapping, Shared Events, Origins/Migration Reports and a Host of New
Features

 http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/whatsnew8.asp#compare Buybutton-144

 http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/.a/6a00d8341d219b53ef019b0158cfdb970c-pi
Legacy8RetailBox3DLargeSURPRISE, Arizona, November 26, 2013. Millennia
Corporation, a leader in family history software, today announced the release
of Legacy Family Tree 8.0. The new release contains dozens of significant new
features and enhancements, including migration mapping, instant duplicate
checking, origins and migration reports, potential problem alerts, and shared
events.

In one software package, Legacy Family Tree 8.0 provides tools to help users
record their family's history, organize their pictures, perform their research,
and share their findings.

Legacy Family Tree 8.0 continues to raise the bar of family history software,
said David Berdan, president of Millennia Corporation. Its new source quality
tool, source labels, citations on Pedigree Charts and shared events give
serious researchers the tools they need, while the new reports, charts, and
family statistics get the entire family excited about their history.

The following new and updated features add to Legacy's list of robust
capabilities:

·Origins Report - See where you came from and the percentage of blood you
have from your countries of origin with the new Origins Report.

·Migration Report - See how far and wide a person's descendants spread out
in the world with the new Migration Report.

·Migration Mapping - Legacy animates the ancestor's movement through time.
Watch how they migrated from place to place. View their migration in street,
aerial, or 3D modes. Hover over the balloon to see what happened in each
location.

·Instant Duplicate Checking - As you are adding new individuals to your
tree, Legacy instantly checks to see if perhaps they are already in your family
file, helping you avoid inadvertently adding duplicates.

·Potential Problem Alerts and Gaps - Typos and accidental misinterpretation
of data are now a thing of the past. The warning symbol is displayed
immediately next to info that contains a potential problem. Unusual gaps of
time are detected that you may have not previously noticed (like too many years
between the births of the children).

·Shared Events - Save time and avoid errors by sharing an event amongst all
the individuals who participated in the event. You can specify each person's
role in the event.

·Family Bow Tie Chart - Displays the ancestors of both the husband and
wife, as well as their children.

·Descendant Chart - Now available in left-to-right formatting.

·Source Quality - Now record the quality (original vs derivative, primary
vs secondary, etc., direct vs indirect) of each source as you attempt to prove
your conclusions.

·Source Labels - Now print Source Labels to attach to the top of your
documents. You will never again lose the citation when making a photocopy for
someone else.

·Source Clipboard - The Source Clipboard has been expanded to load up to
five different citations that can be assigned at the click of a button.

·Pedigree Citations - Add source citations to your Pedigree Charts, and
attach the complete bibliography.

·FamilySearch Integration - Share, discuss, download and interact with
FamilySearch's Family Tree (optional).

·Wall Charts - Duplicate lines can now be suppressed, saving room for more

Arizona, November 26, 2013. Millennia Corporation, a leader in family
history software, today announced the release of Legacy Family Tree 8.0.
The new release contains dozens of significant new features and
enhancements, including migration mapping, instant duplicate checking,
origins and migration reports, potential problem alerts, and shared events.

In one software package, Legacy Family Tree 8.0 provides tools to help
users record their family's history, organize their pictures, perform their
 research, and share their findings.

Legacy Family Tree 8.0 continues to raise the bar of family history
software, said David Berdan, president of Millennia Corporation. Its new
source quality tool, source labels, citations on Pedigree Charts and shared
events give serious researchers the tools they need, while the new reports,
charts, and family statistics get the entire family excited about their
 history.

The following new and updated features add to Legacy's list of robust
 capabilities:

·*Origins Report* - See where you came from and the percentage of
blood you have from your countries of origin with the new Origins Report.

·*Migration Report *- See how far and wide a person's descendants
spread out in the world with the new Migration Report.

·*Migration Mapping* - Legacy animates the ancestor's movement
through time. Watch how they migrated from place to place. View their
migration in street, aerial, or 3D modes. Hover over the balloon to see
 what happened in each location.

·*Instant Duplicate Checking* - As you are adding new individuals to
your tree, Legacy instantly checks to see if perhaps they are already in
your family file, helping you avoid inadvertently adding duplicates.

·*Potential Problem Alerts and Gaps* - Typos and accidental
misinterpretation of data are now a thing of the past. The warning symbol
is displayed immediately next to info that contains a potential problem.
Unusual gaps of time are detected that you may have not previously noticed
(like too many years between the births of the children).

·*Shared Events* - Save time and avoid errors by sharing an event
amongst all the individuals who participated in the event. You can specify
each person's role in the event.

·*Family Bow Tie Chart* - Displays the ancestors of both the husband
and wife, as well as their children.

·*Descendant Chart* - Now available in left-to-right formatting.

·*Source Quality* - Now record the quality (original vs derivative,
primary vs secondary, etc., direct vs indirect) of each source as you
 attempt to prove your conclusions.

·*Source Labels* - Now print Source Labels to attach to the top of
your documents. You will never again lose the citation when making a
 photocopy for someone else.

·*Source Clipboard* - The Source Clipboard has been expanded to load
up to five different citations that can be assigned at the click of a
 button.

·*Pedigree Citations* - Add source citations to your Pedigree Charts,
 and attach the complete bibliography.

·*FamilySearch Integration* - Share, discuss, download and interact
 with FamilySearch's Family Tree (optional).

·*Wall Charts* - Duplicate lines can now be suppressed, saving room
 for more photographs and captions.

 ·*Chronology View* - Now view the parent's, grandparent's,
children's, and grandchildren's vital events in your ancestor's timeline.

 ·*User Interface* - Enjoy Legacy's modernized look-and-feel, new
color schemes, and new ribbon menu bar. Add two additional custom buttons

Hi Colette,

There is no digest available for this list. There are ways of managing
the list mail in your own mailbox if you don't want it cluttering the
Inbox - search the archive for terms like digest and filter (without
the quotes) or post to the list it if you want to know more.

If you are not receiving the posts from this list, contact Legacy
directly for assistance - it's a common problem on this list these days,
and they may be able to help you get it sorted.

I'm sending a copy of this to your address as well as the LUG to ensure
you see it. :-)

Kind Regards,

Arizona, November 26, 2013. Millennia Corporation, a leader in family
history software, today announced the release of Legacy Family Tree 8.0.
The new release contains dozens of significant new features and
enhancements, including migration mapping, instant duplicate checking,
origins and migration reports, potential problem alerts, and shared
 events.

In one software package, Legacy Family Tree 8.0 provides tools to help
users record their family's history, organize their pictures, perform
their research, and share their findings.

Legacy Family Tree 8.0 continues to raise the bar of family history
software, said David Berdan, president of Millennia Corporation. Its
new source quality tool, source labels, citations on Pedigree Charts and
shared events give serious researchers the tools they need, while the
new reports, charts, and family statistics get the entire family excited
 about their history.

The following new and updated features add to Legacy's list of robust
 capabilities:

·*Origins Report* - See where you came from and the percentage of
blood you have from your countries of origin with the new Origins
 Report.

·*Migration Report *- See how far and wide a person's descendants spread
out in the world with the new Migration Report.

·*Migration Mapping* - Legacy animates the ancestor's movement through
time. Watch how they migrated from place to place. View their migration
in street, aerial, or 3D modes. Hover over the balloon to see what
 happened in each location.

The warning
symbol is displayed immediately next to info that contains a potential
problem. Unusual gaps of time are detected that you may have not
previously noticed (like too many years between the births of the
 children).

·*Shared Events* - Save time and avoid errors by sharing an event
amongst all the individuals who participated in the event. You can
specify each person's role in the event.

·*Family Bow Tie Chart* - Displays the ancestors of both the husband and
wife, as well as their children.

·*Descendant Chart* - Now available in left-to-right formatting.

·*Source Quality* - Now record the quality (original vs derivative,
primary vs secondary, etc., direct vs indirect) of each source as you
 attempt to prove your conclusions.

 ·*Source Labels* - Now print

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problems Flags and Options for Legacy 8 [was: Font Size]

2013-11-26 Thread John B. Lisle
Lloyd,

Yes, if you do not want to see all of the PP flags, turn off Option 8.11.

The ability to exclude items as problems has been significantly
enhanced and an additional category of problems Gaps has been added.

I would like to point users to the last note on the Help page
Potential Problems Report under the Standardization Tab. We have a
new way to exclude specific terms you may use for Unknown surnames or
given names from PP checking.

Please note some important differences in handling options in Legacy 8.

1/ All of the Options are now numbered so you can communicate easily
which option you are talking about. Please note that on the Customize
menu, the last item is an index of all of the options so you can find
the one you are looking for quickly.

2/ Some of the options are global, and some are for specific to the
family file you are currently using. Option 8.11 is per Family File
(ff) so you can decide for each of your family files if you need PP
alerting or not.

Possibly a more important use of this is 6.2 Default location of
media files. If you have multiple family files, you can have a
default location for media for each of your ff.

Current users amy want to look over all of the options and decide how
you want to operate and then click on Options for Default Settings
and save your personal defaults. Those defaults will then be
installed whenever you create a new Family File.

A general concept about Legacy 8 is that it has been implemented so
that the new or beginning user can operate without having to do a lot
of customization. Just install and go. But, as you become more
experienced, you have lots of flexibility to tune Legacy to your
specific needs. And an advanced or power user can tune it for high
productivity.

Does this help?

john.

Ron was answering Donna's question, not yours, Bill. :-)

I would expect that Legacy are VERY busy today with the launch of the
new version, so it might be a bit slower than usual to send out new
customer numbers. It's been less than 24 hours, perhaps you could be a
little more patient?

Thanksgiving isn't until Thursday (it's Tuesday afternoon in America
right now, isn't it? Wednesday morning here in NZ), and I'm sure the
Legacy people factored that in when they launched the new edition. And
if the volume of transactions catches them by surprise and overloads the
staff, I'm sure they'll get to your order as quickly as they can.

Take a deep breath! But don't hold it while you wait. ;-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Just out of interest are you using the standard or deluxe version? Certainly,
it is important, particularly at the moment that this be given. Also, following
a launch, there is often a number of updates as minor bugs are sorted – so the
version number will become very relevant.

I just spoke with someone at Customer Service and they indicated to me that
they had not anticipated the volume of orders, for Legacy 8, that is being
received today, and that they were processing Customer Numbers, and orders, as
quickly as possible. They also indicated that the normal 24 hour (maximum

So the bottom line is, they are busy processing orders and we must be patient.

[LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Installation - Avast Antivirus - file prevalence/reputation is low msdev.exe

2013-11-26 Thread John Magyari
After being hit by several viruses this year
and having to reformat the drives on 2 PCs
I started using Avast, which has prevented many infections so far.

Avast indicated
We did not find enough evidence to identify the file as malware,
However you should still use extreme caution when accessing it.

msdev.exe

reason: The file prevalence/reputation is low.

Is this file uninfected or should I override the Avast Antivirus Software

2013-11-26 Thread Cathy Pinner
I've been using Avast free with Legacy.

Avast 2014 initially did some sort of deep scan a few times but since
then hasn't made a peep about Legacy files.

The previous Avast sent up a warning. Not exactly a false positive as
it didn't claim it had found a virus - just a file that may be a problem.

Like Ron, I'm a beta tester.

The solution may be to update Avast.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Installation - Avast Antivirus - file prevalence/reputation is low msdev.exe

2013-11-26 Thread Sherry/Support
In early beta I had Avast as well as a couple other beta testers. We had
problems with it. I switched.

One of the testers who stuck with it and upgraded Avast, he wrote that he
stopped having problems with it. Other AV programs apparently haven't
caused any problems.

Override the Avast settings if you can figure out how! I couldn't get it to
let Legacy's updates through ever without sandboxing or scanning every
one. When I wrote to them, they never responded back.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Installation - Avast Antivirus - file prevalence/reputation is low msdev.exe

2013-11-26 Thread John B. Lisle
John,

The last two major version of Avast Internet
Security (Ver 8 9) have had some qualms about Legacy install files.

This was a problem seen in Legacy 7.x also; it is not new to Legacy 8.

It has something to do with how the Legacy
installer file is constructed. To keep it as
small as possible, it is a compressed file. The
file is uncompressed into a temporary file that
has a different name, probably created by Windows
on your PC, each time it is created so you cannot
tell Avast that the file of that name is OK as it
is seeing a concern about the created temp file.

If Avast were the only part of the problem, this
would not be an issue. However, Windows (I use
Win 7 Pro) jumps in after Avast starts analyzing
the file, Windows thinks it is not opening
quickly enough, so it comes up with what is
effectively a Not Responding Window (which you
just have to X out of) and then a Program
Compatibility Window that you can just close and
then the install proceeds without a problem.

A further complication can be that, if you choose
to download the installer file and rename it - I
append the build number, you will get another
Program Compatibility Alert asking if the program
installed correctly. Just say yes, and you are good.

I get annoyed about this, but this should give
users, confidence that the installer is a safe
file. As a tester, I got the privilege of dealing
with this almost every day for months.

I have tried contacting Avast support, but I do
not think they understand what is the problem.
They do not understand that new installer files
are created regularly so I cannot just upload one
and have them clear that one when they get around
to it, as a new copy will likely be available
before they process it. I invite other Avast users to contact them also.

I have not found an Avast option to limit this
behavior just for Legacy setup files. Nor have I
found what Windows options need to be tweaked to
deal with the alerts they are posting.

BTW, I seen these problems with other software I have installed on my PC.

john.

Should I have uninstalled 7.5 before installing 8?
Are there any issues by my uninstalling 7.5 now, after installing 8?

There was a previous question about keeping and running v8 and v7.5 on the
same computer.
Was there an answer? Also, does V8 read V7.5 files or do they need to be
converted?

[LegacyUG] Legacy 8 Import Legacy 7.5 data

2013-11-26 Thread Bobby Johnson
I installed legacy 8 on a Win 7-64 using the default settings. After making
sure I had a backup of my Legacy 7.5.0.278 data, I imported it into Legacy 8.
No problems. Everything appears to be in place and displays properly. Now I am
wondering if my data were from an older build of 7.5 where the tables are
different would I have gotten the same good results? Some of the users group I
am associated with have not upgraded to the latest version of 7.5 . I suspect
they will have no problem but am not sure that is the case.
I would appreciate comments from anyone who may have experience with this
situation.

RE: [LegacyUG] Delete 7.5?

2013-11-26 Thread Michele/Support
Yes, you can run both versions on the same computer. It is best to let both
versions install to their default locations (they are different). Each will
have to have its own database file because Legacy 8 will convert a 7.5 file and
then it won’t be usable in 7.5 anymore. It is best to have the two databases
in separate locations (again, the default locations are the best) and I would
name them different names so that you don’t get confused.

Re: [LegacyUG] Clock Alarm feature

2013-11-26 Thread Kathy Thompson
given that my computer clock IS set to the right time (currently 5:05PM
where I am) but that Legacy WAS showing the time as 12 hours wrong, but has
since corrected itself I now no longer have a problem.

However, first the clock was 15 hours out, then it was 12 hours out, then
it was about 6 hours out - now it is showing the correct time.
It appears that a few loads and shut downs of the program were needed for
it to get in sync with my time zone.
And no, I have not changed my own computer clock.

about 6 hours out - now it is showing the correct time.
It appears that a few loads and shut downs of the program were needed
 for it to
get in sync with my time zone.
And no, I have not changed my own computer clock.

 Strange one!

RE: [LegacyUG] Clock Alarm feature

2013-11-26 Thread Mark Lang
Kathy,

I can confirm this bug and have reported it. If you don't mind 24-hr time, you
can change the option in Options Customise Data Defaults 4.8 Time Format
to 24-hr then [Save].

Kind Regards,

Mark

Subject: [LegacyUG] Clock Alarm feature

The Clock on my Legacy 8 is not displaying the current time.

Earlier today it was out by about 15 hours, now it's out by 12 hours (showing
AM when it should be PM)

How can I set the clock please so that my alarm will go off at the correct time?

(currently Standard version 8.0.0.353 - hopefully soon Deluxe version)

Thanks Mark, glad to know I wasn't alone with it.
And yes, I have since changed to 24 hour time to ensure I know it is always
reading correctly.
