Re: [LegacyUG] Media file names

2016-08-04 Thread Evelyn ..
I have 18,000+ individuals. There are way too many source files (almost
9,500) to keep straight especially when I may not know the full name at the
time I find the file (some have initials, nickname, or partial name in the
file). I use a combination of the old paper style & new digital files.

Folder examples:

MRIN His Name - Her name(the MRIN number is unique, the names are for
me to read)

1541 George Rix - Anna Gooch

Files inside folder

-MM-DD file name

1940-06-01 census-WA King Seattle-Rix George
1886-06-01 Rix George-birth cert

I can use Legacy to find the MRIN. Or I can use Windows File Explorer to
search for a name. I like the 60 second rule... find the info I want in 60
seconds or less.

When I have children who get married, and therefore get their own MRIN, I
copy all the pre-marriage files (like birth & census records) that refer to
the individual into their own MRIN folder. This creates several copies of
some of the files, but all of 1 persons records are all together when I
need them.

[LegacyUG] Media file names

2016-08-04 Thread Martha Graham

Good Morning,
If I have three John Smith Death Certificates I use the following naming
scheme:

Smith,J-1884-1901
Smith,J-1902-1951
Smith,J-1740-1800

By using the dob-dod's, I can tell at a glance who is who.

Same thing for Births, use the dob or yob along with the name.
If I have two identical names and birth dates - say a set of cousins -
same name, same dob. I put in the birth location

Smith,J-1905-NJ
Smith,J-1905-MO

Re: [LegacyUG] Renaming media files

2016-08-04 Thread Pat Hickin
Just as a matter of curiosity, why is the dob not shown on the names in the
Picture Center? If you have ten names that are all the same, you have to
look at each name separately and choose the right one based on the names of
the parents. Makes little sense to me.
