Re: [LegacyUG] Export a select file

2017-10-01 Thread Rune Mattsson
I'm using "The Complete Genealogy Reporter" (TCGR) to create such a report.
I export my whole file (30 000 persons) to Gedcom and import it to TCGR.
Then I select a person and request a report for his/her ancestors X
generations backward.
(or descents forward) with cousins, second cousins, uncles aunts etc.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is Legacy falling apart?

2017-10-01 Thread Ian Macaulay
Lets start with one thing at a time. Anchorage, Type that in to the
location field in Family view for Born, Chr, Died, or Buried, Then click on
the green ball (Not sure what it represents ) and low and behold Anchorage
, Anchorage, Alaska, United States shows up.
Click ok. You get the message that there is no County Anchorage. And
that stops the next entry. So Being old and decrepid, I stop and fix that
problem, Now what was I going to enter

Second thing is search tools, I search using (For Example) individual,
given name, contains , AND individual, surname, contains and individual
death date contains. This happily works time and time again until suddenly
without any warning, given name will change to event notes, and my search
is pooched. If I see it right away great but If I miss it I end up
making a duplication in my file.

Third That duplication may turn up in the automatic duplicate check where
the fellows only wife will be marked as second spouse.

Teresa,

Set the numbers in the Set Relationships. These stick and are used in
the Relationship Calculator.
I don't know about the problem of printing all relationships. That's
just sticking for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is Legacy falling apart?

2017-10-01 Thread Linda Greethurst
Ian,
I have to add my own comments here. Boy, you sure are having a frustrating
time! I have had none of your problems. But I just install Legacy where
they design it to be installed. Then by it's design, Legacy lets ME be in
control with all the parameters (options). The way the whole program is
set up, it works exactly how I tell it to. In other words, Legacy doesn't
do all your work for me. If I don't like the way something appears, it is
100% usually my fault, not Legacy's. I have found that taking the time to
learn all the little tools (like the up and down arrows when clicking on
the marriages icon to put the spouses in the correct order) has saved me a
lot of headaches down the road.
I'm thinking with all the troubles you are having, somehow something got
screwed up in the installation onto you computer or you have other programs
that interacting/syncing or whatever it's called. Granted, I am definitely
not a programmer, or even very computer literate. But it looks like my
ignorance is bliss as I don't have the drama and trauma that you are
experiencing.
Since the database is in a separate folder in your documents, have you
considered just uninstalling all the stuff in the download and user files,
etc. (someone who knows what all they are will help tell you which ones
they are) and then doing a new, clean install; then just *restore* your
database?
Or maybe you have tried that already and I just missed that message. If
so, I'm sorry I sent this message.

Re: [LegacyUG] Check/Repair hangs on newer PCs

2017-10-01 Thread Gene Rampale
Backup you Legacy files, then:
Run CHKDSK /F from a command prompt.
The system will state it cannot lock the drive, and ask if you want to run
it at start up. Say "Y" and reboot.
It can take a while so do it when you don't need the computer.
When it is done try the clean and repair.
It is possible you have a bad sector on your disk, which could hang the
repair process.
Run it a couple of times, the defragment your disk.
Hope it helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] One Drive

2017-10-01 Thread Gene Rampale
I wouldn't wait. I have had the Fall update for a while now. It's mainly a
make it look like Windows 10 update with more business functionality.
Main thing to remember when using any cloudy service provided storage for
backup, is to only connect it when you need it.
Crypto locking rasomware will also encrypt your OneDrive.

I use Western Digital Passport drives with Microsoft's Sync Toy to make
offline backups. I pop it in, run my backups and back it goes to work for
offsite storage.

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-10-01 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls

Leon,

Thank you. Looks like I have it working. Decided to backup both the data
and media files to OneDrive. Have the OneDrive folder at d:\OneDrive
with a Legacy Backup subfolder. Saw the option to move the folder
location during the OneDrive install. Missed that in the past.

I will alternate backups to my external drives and to OneDrive.

Here is an answer to basic backup.

1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File
2. At bottom right, Click HELP >Show Help Topic. or watch a video.

This HELP completely talks about backups and the Legacy Cloud backup
in 5 steps.

*OneDrive Backup*
1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File
2. Select Backup to My Computer (Family File & Media Files)
3. Click CHANGE to far right of Family File
4. A windows file manger will open and you can then locate your
OneDrive folder (e.g:  \OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ) and save the Legacy
Backupup files in that folder.  If you also have the Media Files
selected for backup, Legacy asks if you want to change the Media
backup location to the same as Family File and the answer would be
YES.  Note:  I would suggest you create the \OneDrive\Legacy Backups\
folder before starting steps 1-4 above - see step 3 below.

*Questions about OneDrive:*
1.  Do I have OneDrive on my system?
     A.  Yes, If you have Windows 8.1 or 10, it was automatically
installed

     B.  Yes, if you have Office 360 installed
2. How can I see if OneDrive is installed?
     A.  You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon
at bottom in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side
window a folder called OneDrive and maybe a few subfolders if you have
created any.

3.  How do I create a new subfolder under OneDrive called:
\OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ?
     A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon
at bottom in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side
window a folder called OneDrive

     B. Right Click on OneDrive >New >Folder
     C. Type the new folder name as:  Legacy Backup
     D. Hit return.  You should see the new folder under OneDrive in
your screen on left side.

4.  What if I don't have a OneDrive Subfolder or OneDrive is not
installed?
     A.  You will need to download OneDrive from Microsoft and create
an account.

     B.  Here is the link to do that:

Enjoy!

2. How would you restore that backup from onedrive instead of from

That means leaving the media files where they are, not putting
them in OneDrive. No extra words, just "Step 1, Step 2", etc.

While it does require a step-by-step ‘recipe’ for users to
set the Legacy FT backup location to other than the defaults,
over the past year I have seen instructions here on how to
change to the location of choice for any individual. That has
included Dropbox (another ‘cloud’ location).

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-10-01 Thread Cheryl Rothwell
I keep my media files wherever they are and copy the ones I want to use to
Legacy. Just an extra precaution.

I backup to One Drive separately from the backup tab. On the Backup to My
Computer check Media and Change to wherever you want, in my case
OneDrive\Legacy. That's simple so I suspect I missed something in your
question. In my case the local copy of OneDrive also gets backed up in my
backup program so that's an extra copy for insurance.

Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Master Location Map

2017-10-01 Thread Cathy Pinner

Mark,

Mapping is broken in all versions of Legacy.
It will probably only be fixed in Legacy 9
If you were still seeing them in Legacy 8 you were drawing from the
cache. One of the Support staff was doing that and wondered what we were
talking about when they first went. After clearing the cache ( in
Temporary Internet files as it's using a form of Internet explorer) they
disappeared. Microsoft turned off the map source that was being used and
the new possible source requires different programming.

The programmers are working on it but there's no quick fix.
