Backing up Family Files.

Hi Folks,
I haven't posted a query for a long time. I hate showing my lack of skill,
ha ha.
This question is likely impossible but thought I would ask anyway.
I have eight different Family Files, the merge I tried didn't work for me
so I am still faced with backing up eight families each time and that is
time consuming.
Is there any way to backup all eight at once?

Cheers,

I meant to add, when I replied to your post, that it is a good idea to
put a meaningful subject line on your messages to LUG. Some people will
only read messages they think might interest them and a subject line
which encapsulates the message - such as "1 family file or 2?" will be
helpful for people searching for messages on specific topics.

There are some really nice helpful poople in the group. I hope you will

great features but you don't need to use them all or learn them all at once!

I always recommend the Tutorials to newbies. I think they are a hidden

Yes, it is very much recommended that you keep all your family in one
file. Later on, when you are more experienced, you will be able to
split off a section of the file if you wish to do so for some reason (eg
to give a copy to someone who is only interested in one branch of the
family.)

If you have 2 separate files you will have to enter all your details in
both files if you want to express relationships to yourself, include
yourself in Reports, etc. Likewise, anything relating to your parents'
marriage will need to be duplicated likewise. Also, it is just possible
that one day you will find some relationship or connection between
someone on your mother's side and someone on your father's side. (I
have found at least 2 instances of relations from different sides of my
family living near each other and have speculated whether they knew each
other and I like to make a note of this when entering, for example
Census information: something like "Jane Doe, my mother's 2nd cousin
once removed was living in the same street.")

Incidentally, if you come across someone you are not sure is related,
you can enter them into the same file as an unconnected person and then
link them up or discard them later when you have more information.

all three. Got a surprise when I did so. My g-g-father had entered a

Re: [LegacyUG] (no subject)

2017-07-25 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jensine,

You use Tools - Manual Merge.
Make a backup before you start.
It looks more complicated than it is but it's best to be able to revert
to a backup and start again when you're learning a new feature.

Don't forget to click the Help buttons on the screens.
It's easiest to have the person you want to keep highlighted on Family
View before going to Tools - Manual Merge.
Then you choose one of the others as the person on the right, check the
information on each tab and choose which parts you want - on the main
screen by radio buttons (and you can also click on the black squares
next to the field names and choose an action if you want to keep the
information from both sides) but on the others you have the choice to
copy data over.

You may be presented with other surrounding family members when you
merge two people.

I have an event note. The heading is "Occupation". I have written the
note to start: "Elizabeth worked at"

The orogram sticks "She was employed" in front of the sentence I have
written. So it says "She was employed. Elizabeth worked at"

How can I get rid of the first three words. I have tried everything I can
see to remove it.

Hi Billy

1.. Identify the set of parent and children where they should be another
generation between them.
2.. For the Children, Right click on them and take Unlink / From Parents.
3.. You now have two, or more, separate trees – one above and one or more
below.
4.. From the parents, add the new generation.
5.. From the new generation parents, select Link to an existing son or
daughter and then locate one of the unlinked children. Repeat for each of the
unlinked children.
6.. You now have the tree rejoined.

Where you have the wrong son or daughter - ie, you have entered someone
as a son or daughter when they should have been a grandson or
granddaughter - you need to unlink that person from their parents. Then
enter the correct son or daugher with his/her spouse, then re-link the
unlinked person as a child of that couple.

If you right-click on a person in the child position in Family View, one
of the options will be to Unlink from parents. Similarly, if you
right-click in the child list area, two of the options are to Link to
existing son or Link to existing daughter.

[LegacyUG] (no subject)

2016-07-02 Thread smm

Now I am having report problems. (I want TMG back!)

There are only 3 full generations in this report, but in two of those
generations there are multiple marriages & children in the direct line.

Let's Say Fred Smith married Mary Jones and they had 5 children"
Bob
Sally
Fred. Jr
Mary Ann
Leonard

Mary dies and Fred marries Irene Peters and they have 3 children:
Charles
Laura
Clinton

Fred, Sr. dies and Irene remarries Jack Young and they have two children:
Letha
John

The dates of the marriages are correct in the database. The children are
attached to the correct parents in the database. The birth, marriage and
death dates are all correct.

When I try to print a descendant "book" Fred's wives are out of order
Child "Clinton" is attached to Irene & Jack, not to Fred and Irene.

What's going on here?

I haven't even tried to sort out Charles and his 3 wives and 5
children...I just know that in the database they are all attached correctly.

Re: [LegacyUG] (no subject)

2016-06-19 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I'm just wondering if the OP forgot to type a letter of two in the post or
perhaps he/she may have customized a label to read as CS. Otherwise, it may
be possible that it was changed to Death Cause and the Legacy short name for
that is "DCs". Close???

Tell us more, so we can help you.

Or are you asking why you are receiving emails from the LegacyUG mailing
list? That is because you subscribed to it at some time in the past. It
might be that it was before the software was changed recently and you'd
had problems that meant you never received the mail before.

If you want to leave, go to
http://legacyusers.com/mailman/options/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com/
<http://legacyusers.com/mailman/options/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com/> There
is a button there to click to unsubscribe yourself from the mailing
list; you may have to log in to your account first - I'm not going to
test it for you to find out.

If that's too hard, write to the "list owner" -
legacyusergroup-ow...@legacyusers.com - and ask to be removed.

Kind Regards,
Wendy

The original message to the list is in the attachment.

This action is required because of the DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy
imposed by some email providers. Users who want to send messages
without conversion to attachments should use a different email address
for their subscription.

Known providers for free email accounts whose emails do not require
this conversion include gmail.com and hotmail.com. Many other email
providers will also work but you will have to give them a try.--- Begin Message ---

This is called spoofing - someone has discovered the password to your email
account.

All you have to do is change the password on your email account. Then the
spoofer no longer has the ability to send emails using your account, and your
account is safe again - until the next time you are spoofed.

People have been spoofing telephone numbers for years - someone called me and
had my own phone show up on my caller ID!

You should change your passwords every six months.

Changing the password will NOT really help this, as the email is NOT really
being sent by the way of the spoofed server.

There's Little You Can Do

If someone accuses you of sending a virus-laden email, and you are positive you
did not, then you have very little recourse other than trying to educate them
about how viruses work. Point them at this article if you like. But be clear:
you're not necessarily infected nor is the person who received the mail
claiming to be from you. It's some third party who is. (And identifying that
third party is difficult - this is why virus writers use this technique.)

In other words there's nothing you can do.

And of course be sure that you're not going to get infected yourself: don't
open attachments from people you don't know and make sure you have an
up-to-date virus checker and virus definitions file.

I had this happen to me but gmail had already locked my account. They also
bounced most of the emails. I had to call a special gmail # and jump through
a couple of hoops. Then I had to change my password. At this time I have had
no further problems (knock on wood).

Some of the gurus from other lists are recommending changing your passwords
either every 30 or 60 days. I would become very confused.

Should I do this on one machine and then move it to the other machines

Some guidance would be greatly accepted.
