Re: [LegacyUG] Name Question
I use a modified version of the National Genealogical Society format. All examples use the "—", emdash symbol. (Hoping for some consistency if I need to export to another GED file. Unknown First Name: [—M ###—] or [—F ###—] or [—U ###—] Unknown Surname: [—L ###—].The M is for Male, the F is for Female, the U is for Unknown genders. The L is for Last Name (Surname, Maiden name)After the name is entered, I immediately edit the name to replace the ### with the RIN Number. (Set options to display RINs). That helps me to know where in my tree this "common name" is used.If the name is not modified, you end up with many instances of people's full names named [—M ###—] [—L ###—] or [—F ###—] [—L ###—], and no idea where those relationships are from. This is what I get instead"[—M 236—] [—L 236—] or [—F 1019—] [—L 872—] or [—M 236—] Jones or Mary [—L 872—]. So when I find the info, it is less likely to enter the names into the wrong person. In Windows, press ALT+CTRL+minus key to get the emdash character. Use this link for the best way to type an emdash on most platforms: https://www.maketecheasier.com/best-ways-type-em-dash-on-any-platform/#androidLove your families,Bob, APG. Re: [LegacyUG] Name Question
I come firmly down on the side of those who leave unknown names blank for all given names. For a surname I will use the surname of the child for a father with an unknown name. If I only have a given name for a wife I will leave the surname blank. If I have no details on a wife I will just not enter anything, Legacy will assign RIN 0 to the unknown wife as a space holder until I enter some information at which time she will get a real non-zero RIN. Re: [LegacyUG] Name Question
Personally, I just leave then blank and only use Unknown for an unknown parent where the other one is known, while Legacy sets as a default. Bonjour, You can have a look at this article: https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2017/12/tuesdays-tip-the-unknownnametxt-file-intermediate.html [https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/.a/6a00d8341d219b53ef01b8d2c455e0970c-600wi]<https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2017/12/tuesdays-tip-the-unknownnametxt-file-intermediate.html> Tuesday's Tip - The UnknownName.txt File (Advanced)<https://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2017/12/tuesdays-tip-the-unknownnametxt-file-intermediate.html> You will create this file using any text editor (Windows Notepad is ideal). This text file will have only two lines. The first line is for the given names you want Legacy to ignore and the second line is for the surnames. If you have more than one given name or surname you need to separate them with a space. news.legacyfamilytree.com Have a good day, Estelle Nadeau nade...@hotmail.com De : LegacyUserGroup de la part de Fran Markle Envoyé : 14 juin 2022 10:58 À : Legacy User Group Objet : [LegacyUG] Name Question What do people use when they don't know the first name or the last name? Re: [LegacyUG] Name Question
I often simply leave it blank. I assume that you mean when you have one of the first/last names and not the other. If I have neither name, then sometimes I put in a descriptive phrase for the name, such as [second wife] or [mother of Jane Doe]. -- Original Message -- From "Evelyn .."
