Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0.439
Jenny, Maybe I've been lucky, but I have not had any trouble with 439. Installed fine and works well. There are still some issues that I'm sure are being worked but it seems stable. The need to re-install from a full download has been around for some time. It is due to several possible reasons. The best thing is that a full install overwrites the older install without loss of data. Those using the standard version are required to update with this method. Please report back if you continue to experience trouble with the latest and specify which OS and computer you are using. Yikes! I will definitely hold off downloading v8 to restore my database until this issue has been resolved. I can't *swear* it was the same error - but I have a strong feeling that it was - that I got with one of the very early updates to L8. On that occasion, when all else failed I was asked to send my database to the programmers and they discovered some previously unnoticed flaw in the programming. I'm using 64-bit Windows 7, AMD Atholon II X2 255 (3.10GHz) processor and 4Gb RAM. As far as I know, unless one has retained the installation file for the previous file, one can't step back. The only installation file I have is one I downloaded back in January. Haven't had to download one since as updates have run automatically. It couldn't have happened at a worse time as I have mountains of work I want to be doing, updating existing records and although I *might* be able to add new records (don't know, haven't tried) I want to get that behind me before pursuing any more research. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0.439
I have found the safest and easiest way to install a new version is to download the whole program file from the Legacy website - Download Download update, fill in email address and the verification code at the bottom. I then download this file, Legacy8setp.exe to my Downloads/Legacy folder. The file size is currently 68,718kb. Double click on this .exe file and it installs the whole program, overwriting parts of the previous version with any updates. It deosn't change any data or media or customised settings or the deluxe version code. When I have confirmed what the build number of the new version is, I rename the new .exe file with the build number as Legacy8setup800439.exe. I then know what version the file is and can use this to reinstall if I need to (and to install the updated program on my netbook). If needs be I can also go back to a previous version - Legacy8setup800427.exe or even Legacy75setup750278.exe. Sometime a new update includes a change in the data format, and then you can't easily go back to the old version without copying data through Gedcom. When you load a family file generated under the old version of the program, if the data format has been changed it goes through a process of checking source information . I suspect it is not checking sources but is converting data format - why doesn't it say what it is actually doing? This process of updating from a full program download has worked for me for several years with no installation problems. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0.439
Boyd, Jenny, Lloyd, Paula et al., I too have only just managed to update both my beta and general release to the latest (.439) release. Like you Boyd, I always download the full file. It has just been a habit more than anything else. I am currently running (GR439) and inputting data with no problems whatsoever (touch wood).
