RE: [LegacyUG] UAC - Users Account Control

2012-01-25 Thread John Clifford
Perhaps Jerry assumed, as I would, from the wording in the CustomizeLaunch
tab that Legacy sets its own defaults. But the Help file explains that we
are talking about Operating System defaults, i.e. Windows file type
settings.

So perhaps Jerry needs to check his Open with defaults on .log files.

3 - Alternate Text Editor to use with Legacy (Leave blank for default

I kept expecting Legacy to automatically find Notepad, so I left that
blank. But it did not find it and kept giving me errors. So, when I
found Notepad (and Notepad ++) and put those in there, it worked both
times. It is not working if I leave it blank (maybe Legacy is
expecting it to be in a different location - not sure).

It doesn't find Notepad. It uses Default Programs and what has been
defined as the default program for opening .TXT files. If that hadn't been
set up properly, then it couldn't open the log file.

I've had it there for however long it's been since I got Win7 (right

Most problems arise from malware in emails and suspicious webpages and

running, you shouldn't have any problems.

That being said, I do downloads and open attachments all the time and
I can't remember when I had a malware warning.

Also, I'm using DSL and behind a secure modem/router - I've tested my
security through a couple of websites (can't remember them right now)

Re: [LegacyUG] UAC - Users Account Control

2012-01-24 Thread Jerry
I also had mine set to the default, but when I imported a gedcom file
into Legacy, it would not create my error log. So, I changed the
setting to NEVER NOTIFY and did the process all over again and I was
then able to create the error log. I might have to test it again to be
sure that was the exact cause.

I certainly wouldn't want to change it to 'Never Notify' unless I absolutely

Are there specific situations where Legacy can't handle UAC?

I've had it there for however long it's been since I got Win7 (right after
it came out). I've never had any problems.

Most problems arise from malware in emails and suspicious webpages and
downloads. If you keep good quality security software updated and running,
 you shouldn't have any problems.

That being said, I do downloads and open attachments all the time and I
can't remember when I had a malware warning.

Also, I'm using DSL and behind a secure modem/router - I've tested my
security through a couple of websites (can't remember them right now) and my
 computer was not discoverable.

I changed this setting because Sherry pointed out that on the website
for Windows 7, it is the recommended setting for Legacy. Until I did
this, I was not able to save (and print out) my error report when
transferring a gedcom into Legacy. After I made the change, I got the
 log ok.

So, the question is - should I / do some of you change this to a safer
setting when not working with Legacy or do you worry about this
 setting at all?

Jerry,

Did you have the problem with the error log before you re-installed to
C:\Legacy? I can certainly see that there would be problems if at the time your
installation was in the Program Files directory, Windows certainly wouldn't
like writing an error log file there.

RE: [LegacyUG] UAC - Users Account Control

2012-01-24 Thread Paul Gray
Hi Mark,

But that's my question, I guess. We know that Legacy discourages (that's
putting it mildly) installing in the Program files directory, but as long as
one installs in the recommended C:\Legacy directory, I have yet to hear why UAC
needs to be turned off.

If you have UAC switched on, any files Legacy normally writes to the program
directory will be written to the virtual store location. That's another reason
why I turned UAC off.

2012-01-24 Thread Mark Lang
Paul,

Point taken. I thought the discussion was aimed at Legacy installed in the
Program Files, then yes turn UAC off. If in the desired C:\Legacy, then by all
means it is not necessary. Trying to keep multi-thread discussions and
inputting data and half other things at once it best left for multi-thread
multi-core processors, not men ;-)

I kept expecting Legacy to automatically find Notepad, so I left that

found Notepad (and Notepad ++) and put those in there, it worked both
times. It is not working if I leave it blank (maybe Legacy is expecting
it to be in a different location - not sure).

It doesn't find Notepad. It uses Default Programs and what has been defined as
the default program for opening .TXT files. If that hadn't been set up properly,
then it couldn't open the log file.
