I have just discovered the Ancestry database Cambridge University
Alumni, 1261-1900 which records information about almost all Cambridge
 Alumni.

One of our family is recorded with a wealth of information about his
 schooling and subsequent career.

Can anyone advise the best way to record this?

I'm trying to build a University event but this doesn't seem adequate
to cover all the information. The actual record is shown between the lines

 Name: William [John] Smelter. Cadman
 College: TRINITY HALL
 Entered: Michs. 1860
 Born: 1838
 Died: 13 Sep 1881
More Information: Adm. pens. (age 22) at TRINITY HALL, Aug. 18, 1860.
 S. and h. of William, Esq., of Handsworth Grange, Sheffield, Yorks. B.
1838. Matric. Michs. 1860. Migrated to Peterhouse, Oct. 25, 1864. Adm.
at Gray's Inn, Nov. 17, 1860. Migrated to the Inner Temple, Nov. 20,
1861. Called to the Bar, 1865. On the Midland Circuit; afterwards on the
North Eastern Circuit. Of Redworth House, Clifton, York. Died Sept. 13,
1881, at York. Father of Philip S. (1890). (Index Soc. Publications,
 Obit. Notices, 1881.)

I really don't want to create a whole list of events for the university
stuff, but I suspect that things like admission to the bar would warrant
 their own event.

I would create a University Event and and put the relevant parts of the
information above into the Notes field. Then create Events for the
other significant facts.

I have used the Cambridge Alumni list from Ancestry as a Source and used
the GenericOnline database SourceWriter template, copying all the text
into the Source Detail Text field.

I did this for myself as well when I went to University only a decade plus ago.
Also included an extra Graduation event because when you are conferred with
your degree, this usually takes place six months after the final exam. In my
case I finished November 1999, conferred April 2000.

Just a thought if you have this information.

Mark,

It's a bit faster than that over here, exams usually finish in June and the
graduation convocation in July.

How things differ. But still something to consider. Lots can happen between
