Re: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-03 Thread Bernd Hornung
Must be a fundamental system difference between laptop(where I first
tried to install) and my desktop, where I have successfully installed.
Interesting but still not exactly what I hoped for. Would be nice if
Blood relation was actual relation - i.e. 5th great-great
grandfather. Would love to replicate Index View as a report to export
to spreadsheet.

Thanks all

Happy to help. The program is still developing as people report bugs. I'll
double check the blood Relation bit on mine and let the developer know about it.
I'll also let them know you had issues with laptop vs desktop installation.

I found out about the program through the Lost Cousins newsletter.

Bernie, I've just double checked the blood relation bit you mentioned -
Direct Ancestors is what you want for what you describe as actual
relation.
Blood relations are anyone who shares the same ancestors as you.
Other than that, I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve.
I'll pass on the info about the laptop vs desktop install though

Also, since this is no longer discussing the Legacy program as such,
perhaps we should end this discussion.

Re: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-03 Thread Bernd Hornung
Kathy, I think the issue is Microsoft .Net Framework 4 vs Microsoft .Net
Framework Client.

I want it to give me the relationship, not just say blood relation. In
Legacy Index View you have what appears to be a spreadsheet and you can
vary the columns, including adding one that gives the relationship to
the root person. The index report itself only gives the name,
relationship and date range. I use a complete spreadsheet to put on
the webpage with highlights showing the documented event. It also helps
me see at a glance what documentation I still have to chase.

Thanks for your help.

Ahh yes, I understand what you want now - and yes, I'd love to have that in
Legacy too - especially for direct line ancestors - would make things a lot
easier for me when searching for certain names (bold vs normal isn't enough
of a difference for me)

Re: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-02 Thread Boyd Miller
Another alternative (also free) is GEDxlate. I've used it
successfully. Remember that Excel doesn't handle dates before 1900.
This is extracted from a promo for the program.

GEDxlate translates genealogy data from standard GEDCOM format into MS
Access dB (*.mdb), MS Excel Worksheet (*.xls), comma delimited (*.csv),
and text file (*.txt) formats.

Pick a GEDCOM file to translate; select which fields you want to include
in your dB, spreadsheet, csv, or txt file; choose an output format and
file name to save the translated data in; and you're there!

I understand how to create lists based on set parameters in Legacy but
not how to use a separate spreadsheet program with it.

Having created your list, in Name List select Print, choose the fields
you want to display, then select CSV file in the bottom right-hand
corner. The Printer button now becomes a Create button. Click it!
Choose where to save the file and name it. Open Excel and open the file
in the usual way EXCEPT that you select Text Files (*.prn, *.txt,
*.csv) on the screen where you select the file to open.

It should be very straight forward as it doesn't actually need installing
as such
Download link is here - http://ftanalyzer.codeplex.com/
download and double click the file
it then opens up the program.
The under file, select Open, and find your GEDCOM and open it

Then explore the various reports and other features it has.

Re: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-02 Thread Bernd Hornung
It seems the download is only 10KB, definitely no where near the
advertised size of 13561K. Also, I have never dealt with Microsoft
ClickOnce Application Deployment Support Library.
Downloaded an earlier edition (host site does not have previous
versions) and have not had any success there either. Framework 4 installed.

Ah well, maybe it's not meant to be.

Download link is here - http://ftanalyzer.codeplex.com/
download and double click the file
it then opens up the program.
The under file, select Open, and find your GEDCOM and open it

Then explore the various reports and other features it has.

RE: [LegacyUG] import/export into Excel

2013-09-02 Thread Mark Lang
I just downloaded this. That small file does all the work, double-click the
file and the file installs over the Internet.

Kind Regards,

Mark
