Thanks for the advice.

The 4.1 version is working for me now, and did not have the mirror issue.
I was able to build lilypond, build a pdf from a mwe and view it in xpdf.

Just kicked off a make doc.

Why 308 instead of 301?  Google suggests 301:
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/93633?hl=en

I've added this to .htaccess:
## Temporary rule, pending larger examination of the setup
Redirect 301 /gsoc.html /google-summer-of-code.html
which should suffice for the current gsoc application process.

I'll revisit this in a few weeks.
