So although you won't be able to teach your kids VM you CAN show them what IBM big iron can do. Have you approached anybody with the IBM academic initiatives program? Both Marist and Colorado have Z systems which they will provide accounts on for students. My university (Northern Illinois University) is getting this from Marist, as our administration have their heads on backwards. Some Microsoft evangelist has convinced a bunch of our administrators that our ESA/390s are dinosaurs that need to be surplussed and replaced by a cluster of x86 boxen running peoplesoft on windows server. It's complete garbage and it means they're going to tell IBM (who was going to give us a brand new z10 bc next year) to get stuffed. Does anybody know where I could point out to my administration what a HUGE mistake they are making? Our curriculum has been based around the IBM mainframe for half a century! However, the machine I'm investigating is being offered by a local business that's decommissioning it, and I can ask if they plan to include VM. Assuming they do, could the machine be useful? It wouldn't be used under high load; it would be hosting student projects. It's 31-bit, so recent SLES and RHEL don't run on it because those are 64-bit. Debian probably does, and Slack might. This might be a time when, depending on just what you want, a nice HP DC5850[1] (desktop PC) might win out. They're 64-bit (we have AMD processors in ours), they support 8 Gbytes of RAM, run the latest Fedora and openSUSE, and you can use virtualisation. It's not a mainframe by any means, but finding someone who knows the software is pretty simple (no VM gurus needed), and it's a setup the kids can replicate at home if they wish (and can afford a newish pc). If you particularly want to run Linux/390, that's possible too. Just install Hercules - it's probably in the software repo. 1 I mention this just because I have personal knowledge of them. Probably, other vendors have something equivalent. One of the things I like about these is the diagnostics DVD. It boots Linux, so I figured the chances of running recent Linux is probably feasible. Re: Old IBM Mainframe - Still Useful?
My two cents. I worked for two companies that bought the bs about ERP and WINDOZE replacing the mainframe.. Company one declared bankrupcy and went out of buisness after spending 50 million dollars (some $35 mil over budget) on the project. Company number two hit the budget ($20 mil) and now about five years later rumor has it they are seriously looking at a z/10 and z/LINUX to run the ERP software.. -Original Message- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:linux-...@vm.marist.edu]on Behalf Of Dodds, Jim Sent: Monday, March 23, 2009 2:21 PM To: LINUX-390@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: Old IBM Mainframe - Still Useful? So I think what's going on is that, for some reason, it's initially trying to swap on before dasd_fba_mod is loaded. So you probably need to build the ramdisk again with dasd_fba_mod in it, or you can just do a late-in-the-boot-process swapon -a once the device driver is loaded. Too bad they don't let you download tools, especially from IBM. I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get stuff from there. Just a little FYI .. you can eliminate the 'SET CMSTYPE' commands by putting your ACCESS/RELEASE commands in a pipe. 'PIPE CMS ACCESS .'usernm' K' ... 'PIPE CMS RELEASE K' this way you don't get the access/release messages cluttering your screen. Myabe put a CLRSCRN command at the beginning to clear the screen before the report starts. -Original Message- From: Linux on 390 Port [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Mary Anne Matyaz Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2008 11:59 AM To: LINUX-390@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: Vexxing Rexx Hi Tom. Getting your cert a non-standard source (including self-signed) inevitably creates a problem with the client. If it is signed by a non-standard source (e.g. local CA), then the non-standard CA cert must be installed on each workstation. z/LINUX DB/2 pricing?
I am trying to understand how DB/2 is priced. I have a z/890 with 4 CPs and no IFL engine. When I inquired about a license for DB/2 for z/LINUX I got what I thought was a rather bizarre response. I was told I NEED an IFL and a second (for the IFL LPAR) z/VM license and that the DB/2 is a MIPS based license. All I thought I needed was simply a license for z/LINUX DB/2.. Does anyone have any insight as to how this actually works? Thanks Alan, Although the z/solution is indeed a good one it is going to be a super tough job to convince managment not to just go buy another Intel box (we already have a license for that DB/2). It's cheaper to buy it for your CPs, but not by much. And that's if you're silly enough to pay list price for the IFL. Not too many people do that I'm aware of. The downside of course is the second z/VM LPAR and all that entails in the way of infrastructure and care and feeding. With the current z/VM pricing model, wouldn't the 5th license come cheaper than that? (I forget where the price breaks are positioned.) Thanks for the nudge. The price drops at 4, 7, 10, 13, 17, 21, and 26 processors. Since Tom already reached the first plateau of savings, he only pays $20,250 for the extra z/VM license, not $22.5K. SIFT/UFT
Looking for some ideas. Basically what I need to do is to send files, usually print files, from VSE to other platforms. We currently use FTP from VSE. But now we need to encrypt everything. I would prefer not to do the encryption in VSE, just too expensive. One thought I had was to PNET the files to RSCS and then UFT them to a zLINUX guest that would do the encryption and FTPout to the other platforms. This has some advantages mainly because it uses RSCS. What do I need to do in the zLINUX machine for it to handle the UFT/UFTD files from RSCS? First time SSLSERV problem.
I am trying, been trying for two days, to startup SSLSERV for the first time. I think I have everything as per the instructions. This is z/VM 5.1 and SLES 9. I get the following messages. LINUX SNA
Good Morning, I am kind of new to this LINUX stuff and I have a rather basic (I hope) question. I have SLES 9 on my z/VM 5.2 system and I am trying to configure an OSA-E port that will connect to a VTAM system (XCA) but I don't seem to be able to find a menu in LINUX (YAST) to configure that device. What am I missing? Thanks Tom Thomas E. Re: LINUX SNA
Alan, You are confusing me. My first choice would be to use a VSWITCH, but how can I define it to VTAM (VSE)? I currently use VSWITCH for all of my guest TCP/IP traffic, but VTAM? Can you explain a little more, or point me to a source? VM Connectivity doesn't appear to address this senerio. What am I missing? Communications Server for Linux is the way you can get an SNA driver. YAST only configures your Linux IP connections. For IP, you can't use an OSE chpid with SNA microcode. Use IP passthru or OSD chpids instead, or use the VSWITCH. Re: LINUX SNA
Thanks Alan, This is making a little more sense now. Wasn't Bisync great, either it worked or it didn't. @#*%! VTAM (VSE, VM, MVS) XCA nodes cannot drive anything in a VSWITCH. VTAM XCA nodes use an adapter protocol called LSA which, like IP's old LCS protocol, is available only in OSE chpids. VSWITCH NICs, however, simulate OSD chpids. If, someday, VTAM changes from LSA to layer 2 QDIO connections, then it will work. Until then Comm Server for Linux, OTOH, can use CTC to talk to VTAM or it can [now] use layer 2 OSD chpids (real OSA or VSWITCH) to talk to a VTAM XCA node.
