I am looking at somehow having a guests RDR spool files be sent or
gotten to linux side of the guest. not sure if that can be done from the
linux guest itself or from a CMS service machine putting the files via
FTP/ NFS etc. Anybody gone down this path and have any suggestions?

Amazingly,a consistent story. The same has happened here as we are going
from an IBM environment to a SUN Solaris and/or Windows environment to
run our ERP system(s).

Dodds, Jim wrote:
Good luck with that. My management here too is going to throw out the
mainframe. We (IT) were establishing working relationships with Marist, IBM,
and the ERP vendor to get our new university ERP system to run under z/Linux
but upper management caught wind of it and made us stop. Marist I assume is
going on with the project to move their university ERP system (which will be
the same as ours) to z/Linux. So now we are planning on spending close to
$200,000 on Dell hardware and Microsoft server software. This doesn't include
the licenses for the Oracle software.

It is very true, however, that you can run several LPARs with
Linux/390 on them. Also, MVS is available for free nowadays, as well
as several other major components that run on the pre-Z
360-derivatives. So although you won't be able to teach your kids VM
you CAN show them what IBM big iron can do. Have you approached
anybody with the IBM academic initiatives program? Both Marist and
Colorado have Z systems which they will provide accounts on for
students. My university (Northern Illinois University) is getting
this from Marist, as our administration have their heads on backwards.
Some Microsoft evangelist has convinced a bunch of our administrators
that our ESA/390s are dinosaurs that need to be surplussed and
replaced by a cluster of x86 boxen running peoplesoft on windows
server. It's complete garbage and it means they're going to tell IBM
(who was going to give us a brand new z10 bc next year) to get
 stuffed.

Does anybody know where I could point out to my administration what a
HUGE mistake they are making? Our curriculum has been based around
the IBM mainframe for half a century! I can only imagine having been
forced to learn x86 assembler... *shudder*. When did people forget
 that IBM Intel?!?!

IBM does have an academic initiative which provides incentives for
 higher education on System z:

Well, this is a high school computer science course, so we don't have
much budget and, quite frankly, we aren't a priority in... anything.

However, the machine I'm investigating is being offered by a local
business that's decommissioning it, and I can ask if they plan to
 include VM.
Assuming they do, could the machine be useful? It wouldn't be used
under high load; it would be hosting student projects.

It's 31-bit, so recent SLES and RHEL don't run on it because those are
64-bit. Debian probably does, and Slack might.

This might be a time when, depending on just what you want, a nice HP
DC5850[1] (desktop PC) might win out. They're 64-bit (we have AMD
processors in ours), they support 8 Gbytes of RAM, run the latest Fedora
and openSUSE, and you can use virtualisation.

It's not a mainframe by any means, but finding someone who knows the
software is pretty simple (no VM gurus needed), and it's a setup the
kids can replicate at home if they wish (and can afford a newish pc).

If you particularly want to run Linux/390, that's possible too. Just
install Hercules - it's probably in the software repo.

1 I mention this just because I have personal knowledge of them.
Probably, other vendors have something equivalent. One of the things I
like about these is the diagnostics DVD. It boots Linux, so I figured
the chances of running recent Linux is probably feasible. It is, unlike
 the DC7700 when new.

My two cents. I worked for two companies that bought the bs about ERP and
WINDOZE replacing the mainframe.. Company one declared bankrupcy and went out
of buisness after spending 50 million dollars (some $35 mil over budget) on the
project. Company number two hit the budget ($20 mil) and now about five years
later rumor has it they are seriously looking at a z/10 and z/LINUX to run the
ERP software..

It's just a PC we can buy another, you know PCs are cheap. Hell they
are running Windows we can just hire college grads that will save us a
bundle of money on staff. As for reliability everyone else is buying one
do you think that if it didn't work they would buy it says the pointy
haired boss.

Those are all good points Henry, and we have informed management but
they think this is the best way to go. What else can I say, the vendor
tells them that 100s to 1000s of universities that use their product use
windows servers and they work beautifully. Hell as part of the deal the
vendor will set it up for you and they will document for your staff when
we turn it over to them. Of course if problems come up that your staff
cant resolve, they can provide service to resolve for you of course for
a price tag.

Could Xen run on z/Linux? I don't see why not. But to be completely
honest, a mainframe is a strange place to run Windows. I mean... you
could go and buy an 8086 and run Andy Tananbaum's Minix 3, and that
would make a LOT more sense to me, at least you can learn something
about operating systems that way. Perhaps with mainframe I/O
capabilities you'd get Windows to stop thrashing long enough to get
some work done? But no, because the virtualization will chew up
enough resources that you won't see any gains.

Still, look into Xen if you really want to do this. http://www.xen.org

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM z/VM 5.4 Performance Update

This presentation covers new developments in the z/VM performance and
capacity area. Included are discussions of the performance and
capacity characteristics of z/VM 5.4 and other recent z/VM releases,
the z10 processor, and performance-related service.

The speaker will be Bill Bitner of the IBM Corporation.

10:30 AMCoffee Break

11:00 AMz/VM Performance Case Studies

In this session, the speaker will present some real-life z/VM
performance problems and illustrate the use of the z/VM Performance
Toolkit and other methods to sift through thousands of available
performance metrics to solve performance problems.

The speaker will be Bill Bitner of the IBM Corporation.

12:30 PMLunch Break

1:30 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements

1:45 PM Linux on z Update

The speaker will present a brief update of recent developments in the
Linux under z/VM area.

The speaker will be Khaylen Kingsley of the IBM Corporation.

2:00 PM Velocity Software: Major Product Announcement

Velocity Software Announces: An exciting new product focused on Linux
and z/VM operations. The presentation will include a live
demonstration of the new product via the internet, as far as network
connectivity allows.

The speaker will be Barton Robinson of Velocity Software.

3:15 PM Coffee Break and Prize Drawing

3:30 PM Linux and z/VM Performance Configuration Guidelines

Managing performance and capacity planning is taken for granted on
mainframes. But managing zLinux running on z/VM has a new set of
challenges. Many of the challenges are based on lack of education, or
even proper research. This presentation was created to assist new
installations (and many old ones) by providing a set of best
practices, and the reasons for those best practices.

The speaker will be Barton Robinson of Velocity Software.

4:45 PM Free-for-All

Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related
questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others
are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software
and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced,
here is the place to find out.

--

Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and
speakers to this meeting.

--

Please check the WEB site for Map and Directions:
http://cavmen.home.comcast.net

In addition, you will also find extensive information available on
dining and lodging in the Hewitt Associates area.

Additional information about the CAVMEN group, and other VM related
items of interest are available on our web site.

There is no charge for admission to meetings.

Meeting attendance is open to anyone, and advance registration is not required.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting.

The last entry (0.0.7ff) ends up being /dev/dasdk. Using udev, entries for
each disk are made in the path /dev/disk/by-path directory such as follows:

iwydzl03:/dev/disk/by-path # ls
. ccw-0.0.0395ccw-0.0.0396ccw-0.0.0397ccw-0.0.0398

ccw-0.0.0399p1 ccw-0.0.039a1 ccw-0.0.07ff1
iwydzl03:/dev/disk/by-path #

(Sorry for the formatting, or lack thereof) The entry I'm interested in for
swap is ccw-0.0.07ff1 (the first partition of ccw device 07ff). This is used
in fstab, as so:

/dev/vg_system/lv_var /var reiserfs acl,user_xattr
1 2
/dev/disk/by-path/ccw-0.0.07ff1 swapswapdefaults,pri=100 0 0
/dev/vg_system/lv_swap swap swap defaults,pri=50
0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0
0

This allows me to access the swap without having to know what /dev/dasd?
Device it is, or be worried about it changing positions in the list.
Swapgen, used in a CMS profile which starts the boot process, makes sure
that the swap space is formatted.

Hmmm, OK.

So the swapspace signature IS on /dev/dasdb, and it swapped on OK.

So I think what's going on is that, for some reason, it's initially
trying to swap on before dasd_fba_mod is loaded.

So you probably need to build the ramdisk again with dasd_fba_mod in
it, or you can just do a late-in-the-boot-process swapon -a once the
device driver is loaded.

Go to the IBM VM download page and download the 'TABULATE' pipe stage.

Now your pipe looks something like this:

'pipe cms listfile * * k (date noh | tabulate by 108 sum 40-44 | console'

This will give you the report for all of your linux's ..

Ok, first off, I know it's spelled vexing. But that doesn't look as nice. :)

I'm having fun with rexx today. First, I'll tell you the problem I'm trying

tell you the problem I'm having in my rexx exec.

Problem: I have 50 some linuxes all sending their logs to
vmsysu:conlog:*linuxname.
*As it gets fuller, I'd like to know
which linux is spewing the most log. Right now I do a dirlist and go in to
each one looking for who has the most records.
I'd like to be able to total it up. Maybe even (gasp) write a report.
So I start with an itty bitty rexx exec. I'm just going to look at linux1
and try to total it. With apologies to Kris for my
atrocious rexx coding, here it is:

totrec = 0
SET FILESP CONLOG
ACCESS .LINUX1 K
'pipe (endchar ?)',
'CMS FLIST * * K (NOCLEAR | STEM SFSREC.';
Do i = 1 to sfsrec.0
parse var SFSREC.i FNAME FTYPE FMODE FRECL FLEN FREC FBLK FDT FTM
totrec = totrec + FREC
End
say 'LINUX1 Total Records: ' totrec
RELEASE K
Exit;

It seemed pretty simple to me. Of course it didn't work. So I tried some
PIPE commands in CMS.
PIPE CMS LISTF * * A | file list a works. Creates the file named FILE
LIST A
However,
PIPE CMS FLIST * * A | file list a doesn't work. Doesn't put it in
the file, but does display it on my screen.

Normally, I'd just go with the output of listf. However, it doesn't have
size info.

Any suggestions? Does FLIST not work in Pipes? How would I know that?
(Looked thru the rexx manual, pipes manual, cms cmds manual.)

Thanks as always!

Too bad they don't let you download tools, especially from IBM. I don't know
what I would do if I couldn't get stuff from there.

Just a little FYI .. you can eliminate the 'SET CMSTYPE' commands by putting
your ACCESS/RELEASE commands in a pipe. 'PIPE CMS ACCESS .'usernm' K' ... 'PIPE
CMS RELEASE K' this way you don't get the access/release messages cluttering
your screen.
Myabe put a CLRSCRN command at the beginning to clear the screen before the
report starts.

Ok, first off, I know it's spelled vexing. But that doesn't look as nice.
 :)

I'm having fun with rexx today. First, I'll tell you the problem I'm trying
to solve, in case theres a better way, then I'll
tell you the problem I'm having in my rexx exec.

With apologies to Kris for my
atrocious rexx coding, here it is:

 totrec = 0
 SET FILESP CONLOG
 ACCESS .LINUX1 K
 'pipe (endchar ?)',
 'CMS FLIST * * K (NOCLEAR | STEM SFSREC.';
 Do i = 1 to sfsrec.0
parse var SFSREC.i FNAME FTYPE FMODE FRECL FLEN FREC FBLK FDT FTM
 totrec = totrec + FREC
 End
say 'LINUX1 Total Records: ' totrec
 RELEASE K
 Exit;

It seemed pretty simple to me. Of course it didn't work. So I tried some
 PIPE commands in CMS.
PIPE CMS LISTF * * A | file list a works. Creates the file named
 FILE
 LIST A
 However,
 PIPE CMS FLIST * * A | file list a doesn't work. Doesn't put it in
the file, but does display it on my screen.

Normally, I'd just go with the output of listf. However, it doesn't have
 size info.

Any suggestions? Does FLIST not work in Pipes? How would I know that?
(Looked thru the rexx manual, pipes manual, cms cmds manual.)

 Thanks as always!
 Mary Anne

Hi Everybody,

After being away from Linux on z/VM for a couple of years, our company
is going to look at implementing this once again!

The first question that I have is, what sort of products are available
for managing the Linux images? This should include things like cloning
new images, applying patches, upgrading software etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

 Why?

Isn't it like when the cops pull you over and you show them a
hand-written piece of paper that says Driver's License and when they
question it, you point at your own signature at the bottom. Nor do we
think the customer card of the local pizza place is a valid
identification. Back then we had a big scene when someone managed to
get through airport security with a children's passport of a big
amusement park...

When you generate your own master certificate, the private parts of
that may not be as safely protected as the professional CA's do. If
you now told your users to trust you (that is, install your
certificate into their browser) then if someone steals your private
keys, they can sign whatever they like and all your users will trust
it. If they use that to set up a mock-up copy of a banking site, your
users will not notice that is a fake.

If your customer has a security policy that says No passwords in
cleartext on the network, or the moral equivalent, then the auditor is
correct.

We have customers getting their certs from Thawte and Verisign. You
mention that you have errors, but you don't elaborate on the process you
used and the errors you got.

Getting your cert a non-standard source (including self-signed) inevitably
creates a problem with the client. If it is self-signed, then all clients
must have the cert also installed on their own workstation. If it is
signed by a non-standard source (e.g. local CA), then the non-standard CA
cert must be installed on each workstation.

Use the SSLADMIN command to display the certificate database and you will
see what CA certs are in there.

It feels like something is deciding that the real OSA is better --

Ideas? Output of various commands is below. Oh, one other thing: I've

z/LINUX DB/2 pricing?

2008-02-13 Thread Huegel, Thomas
I am trying to understand how DB/2 is priced.
I have a z/890 with 4 CPs and no IFL engine.
When I inquired about a license for DB/2 for z/LINUX I got what I thought
was a rather bizarre response.

I was told I NEED an IFL and a second (for the IFL LPAR) z/VM license and
that the DB/2 is a MIPS based license.
All I thought I needed was simply a license for z/LINUX DB/2..

Does anyone have any insight as to how this actually works?

Thanks

Thanks Alan,
Although the z/solution is indeed a good one it is going to be a super tough
job to convince managment not to just go buy another Intel box (we already
have a license for that DB/2).
There doesn't appear to be any incentive.
Time to start schmuzing.

With the current z/VM pricing model, wouldn't the 5th license come

that? (I forget where the price breaks are positioned.)

Thanks for the nudge. The price drops at 4, 7, 10, 13, 17, 21, and 26

only pays $20,250 for the extra z/VM license, not $22.5K.

Remember, too, that the number of processors you run z/VM on is calculated

I asume by 3 partitions you mean each mod-9 represents 3 mod-3's.. DDR
should work just fine.

Am looking for any information or ideas on how to copy 7 3390-9 volumes
splitted into 3 partitions per volume into probably 21 3390-3 volumes. Or
maybe copy them to tape.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Final Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM z/VM Performance Update

The newest releast of z/VM was generally available on June 29, 2007
and has significant improvements to performance and capacity. This
session will describe some of the key performance related changes in
the release and how they may apply to your system. Customer workloads
on z/VM have continued to grow this decade. The newest release of
z/VM was designed to keep you from out growing your z/VM system. The
design includes improved scalability in: processor, real memory,
networking, and disk I/O. In each of these areas; we'll describe how
the system capacity has been increased.

The speaker will be Mr. Bill Bitner of the IBM Corporation.

10:30 AMCoffee Break

11:00 AMz/VM: If the Sky is the Limit, How High is the Sky?

The earlier z/VM Performance Update discussed extending some limits.
This session will take a more in depth look at just how large or wide
or tall can you grow a z/VM system. The session will also discuss the
type of data you can look at to evaluate how close your system is to
those limits. As we look at different subsystems (processors, memory,
etc.), we will discuss theoretical and practical limits. Included
will be a brief look at some of the ways IBM tests these limits.

The speaker will be Mr. Bill Bitner of the IBM Corporation.

12:30 PMLunch Break

1:30 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements

2:00 PM Linux under z/VM Performance Analysis Case Studies

This presentation will show Case studies in measuring Linux under
z/VM performance. All examples will use ESALPS as the measurement facility.

The speaker will be Mr. Barton Robinson of Velocity Software.

3:15 PM Coffee Break and Prize Drawing

3:30 PM Managing Linux under z/VM using ESALPS

Managing Linux on a mainframe requires capacity planning, performance
analysis, chargeback, and operational support. This presentation
presents the technologies employed by Velocity Software's ESALPS.

The speaker will be Mr. Barton Robinson of Velocity Software.

4:45 PM Free-for-All

Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related
questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others
are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software
and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced,
here is the place to find out.

Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and
speakers to this meeting.

So now you want to run Linux on an IBM box ?

Yes, I do.

The reason why the market is moving to Linux is precisely because of the
 constant Upgrade fees of IBM/Microsoft.

Maybe 1 of the reasons. There are many others. Better OS than Microsoft,
more secure than Microsoft. Does a better job, for certain workloads.

You want to tell me we are going to get new/better features in Linux,
compared to other Operating Systems that have been around for 50 years.

You just may, it is being developed by thousands, of individuals.

So Yes, I agree with you... Brain dead is one way of putting it in

Mainframes must have arrived.

SIFT/UFT

2007-09-26 Thread Huegel, Thomas
Looking for some ideas.
Basically what I need to do is to send files, usually print files, from VSE
to other platforms.
We currently use FTP from VSE. But now we need to encrypt everything. I
would prefer not to do the encryption in VSE, just too expensive.

One thought I had was to PNET the files to RSCS and then UFT them to a
zLINUX guest that would do the encryption and FTPout to the other platforms.
This has some advantages mainly because it uses RSCS.

What do I need to do in the zLINUX machine for it to handle the UFT/UFTD
files from RSCS?

Thanks

LINUX SNA

Good Morning,

I am kind of new to this LINUX stuff and I have a rather basic (I hope)
question.

I have SLES 9 on my z/VM 5.2 system and I am trying to configure an OSA-E
port that will connect to a VTAM system (XCA) but I don't seem to be able to
find a menu in LINUX (YAST) to configure that device. What am I missing?

Thanks

You are confusing me. My first choice would be to use a VSWITCH, but how can
I define it to VTAM (VSE)? I currently use VSWITCH for all of my guest

Can you explain a little more, or point me to a source? VM Connectivity
doesn't appear to address this senerio.

Communications Server for Linux is the way you can get an SNA driver. YAST
only configures your Linux IP connections. For IP, you can't use an OSE
chpid with SNA microcode. Use IP passthru or OSD chpids instead, or use
the VSWITCH.

Sorry to confuse. VTAM (VSE, VM, MVS) XCA nodes cannot drive anything in
a VSWITCH. VTAM XCA nodes use an adapter protocol called LSA which,
like IP's old LCS protocol, is available only in OSE chpids. VSWITCH
NICs, however, simulate OSD chpids.

If, someday, VTAM changes from LSA to layer 2 QDIO connections, then it
will work. Until then

Comm Server for Linux, OTOH, can use CTC to talk to VTAM or it can [now]
use layer 2 OSD chpids (real OSA or VSWITCH) to talk to a VTAM XCA node.
