Is there any application with which I can access the photos inside my
FujiFilm MX 1500? I tried gPhoto, but the application does not
recognize the device.

Subject: keyboard lock-ups

Hi,

I am having these mysterious lock-ups of my cordless logitech keyboard. It
does this mostly when working with console. It suddenly locks up for about
1-3 mins (no keys work), then it may let go or not. Pulling out the PS/2
cable and plugging it back in again helps, but only for a while - and after
this the keyboard repeat rate sinks to about half its value. Pressing those
CONNECT buttons on both the receiver and the keyboard doesn't help at all.
Oh and it never does this under win98. Maybe I have to lower the key repeat
rate? If so which file do I edit?

Please help?

Thanks in advance,
Vlad

Do u need to give a parameter like ATX1 or something to your modem?
Not sure, but maybe that is causing the problem.

This makes no sense... have an Pentium 233 MMX processor running on a

(internal). The modem works great under Redhat 5.2, 6.2, 7.0,
oops~! Not 7.1 I upgraded both my PC and my laptop to 7.1. No
problems on the laptop (laptop uses PCMCIA modem), but under the PC, I
get failed to activate ppp0 with error 6 What is error 6?

If this is relevant, the motherboard likes to assign the modem to IRQ
10, so I have to setserial /dev/ttyS2 IRQ 10 I did try removing that,
but it did not change the error message.

 Please advise.

A sure sign that you have a winmodem is that there is a driver.

Real modems don't need drivers.

The makers of winmodems make drivers for Toyland operating systems only,
not for real operating systems such as Linux or OS/2.

A winmodem is simply a modem with the firmware gutted out so that the
computer's processor must use a driver to do what the modem ought to be
doing on its own. They are also unwilling to release enough information
to let people write Linux drivers.

US Robotics makes good modems, apart from its apperant behaviour in
producing these winmodem abortions. Their web page has lists of model
numbers for real modems and winmodems.

The emu10k1 drivers for Red Hat 7.0 do not support the joystick port. I
upgraded from 6.2 to 7.0. In 6.2, a line after the emu10k1 line in
/etc/conf.modules was needed:

alias sound-slot-0 emu10k1
options emu10k1 joystick=0x200

This no longer works in 7.0. Moreover, the /etc/conf.modules file is now
/etc/modules.conf. The solution for me was to get the drivers from
opensource.creative.com (version 20001117) and simply do 'make' in the
main emu10k1 directory. After the 'make' look for a module file called
'emu10k1-joy.o' and copy it to /lib/modules/2.2.16-22smp/misc (I have an
smp system; just remove the 'smp' if you have a single processor
system). Then do 'depmod -a'. Now do 'insmod emu10k1-joy io=0x200'. Note
that I did not use the compiled emu10k1.o module but the default one
from my initial Red Hat 7.0 install.

To automate this process of inserting the modules, in your
/etc/rc.d/rc.local file, add this line:

/sbin/insmod emu10k1-joy io=0x200

so that the joystick port gets enabled. Since I have an MS-Sidewinder, I
also have the following line below the one just above:

/sbin/modprobe joy-sidewinder

which is equivalent to:

/sbin/insmod joystick
/sbin/insmod joy-sidewinder

Yes and no, respectively. You need to focus on the hardware and software
interface, not the optical vs. mechanical nature of the technology. I
have yet to hear of a mouse that flat-out does not work under Linux
(although there's a good chance somebody will post a story in response

Mouse Systems optical mice under Linux, though.

first of all know that you should look at:

ifconfig -h#for all the options

ifconfig irq 11 eth0

This should work.

if you want to just get rid of lilo, go into DOS/Win and
type "fdisk /mbr" and that should do it. it's either a
slash or a dash, i forget which "fdisk /mbr" or "fdisk
-mbr".

or, if you've got a DOS version of lilo you can edit the
configuration file to make windows the default and then
write it to the master boot record with lilo. but i think
that the first option is more what you're looking for.

Hi,

maybe I should first of all apologize for posting the same message several
times under different titles, but since I want to ask for information about
several different models I thought this would be the easiest way to attract
the attention of owners of the various notebooks

As the subject says, I would appreciate some advice from all you wizards
out
there. Background: I am intending to buy a notebook and in the first round
I
came up with several models (basically I chose one or two from different
companies that seem to fit my ideas of what it should do, e.g. I don't need
extensive multimedia features, DVD, the absolutely fastest processor on the
market,...)
Having made these first round picks, I would highly appreciate any input
from
you (unfortunately I'm a completely clueless newbie myself, so please be
patient...). If you happen to own one of those models or a similar one or
have
some experiences, I would be very happy to hear about it: Can you recommend
it
or not (what instead?)? What to look out for?

While I would be glad to get ANY input on those notebooks, an equally
important
aspect is the following: I am used to using Unix on workstations, so I plan
to
run Linux on it (to be precise I have to confess to the purists that I
would
run both Linux and Windows in parallel...), so if you happen to own one of
those models and run Linux on it, you are the (wo)man! I would be VERY
happy
if I would hear from you ('forget it, it won't run' is of course not a
welcome
message, but equally important!).
Note before I get 100 RTFM-messages: I am aware that there is a website
where
hints on installing Linux on specific machines are collected and I will
look at
those, but often they are written for experts ('downloaded the x.y.z kernel
v0.34 from ...'), a little more basic and personal recommendations for
someone
who never before installed a Linux system ('watch out for this', 'get the
zzz-distribution', 'everything will run fine but don't buy a modem from
...')
would be very very helpful.

Now finally, here comes the list of first round choices. As said before, I
basically picked one or two models from different companies that are in the
price range I co

 Microsoft Announces MS-Linux

The flexible "grassroots" operating system, now with the quality and
enterprise-level service and support customers expect from Microsoft

REDMOND, Wash., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. today announced
the forthcoming release of MS-Linux(R), a new version of the well-known
Linux(R) operating system designed for the enterprise.

"Prior to the development of MS-Linux, enterprise customers wouldn't
dream of deploying mission-critical applications on an unsupported
 operating
system," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president of Microsoft's personal
 and
business systems group. "All that has now changed."

 Maximum compatibility and performance

While other versions of Linux offer a variety of immature and largely
incompatible windowing environments, MS-Linux includes an implementation
 of
the familiar Microsoft(R) Windows(R) desktop, minimizing corporate
 training
costs and allowing the hundreds of millions of Windows users worldwide
 to be
 productive right away.

MS-Linux provides a complete implementation of the Win32(R) API,
enabling many of the thousands of applications written for the Microsoft
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT(R), and Windows 2000 operating
 systems to
run unchanged on MS-Linux. Microsoft will offer support for future
 releases
of the Microsoft Office suite of productivity applications and the
BackOffice family of server products running on MS-Linux. In addition,
 many
existing MS-DOS(R) and SCO Unix programs will run on MS-Linux without
modification. Benchmark tests performed by independent laboratories have
shown that MS-Linux is the world's fastest Windows file server.

A groundswell of support from industry

A number of leading development tool vendors will announce support for
MS-Linux, including Bristol Technology Inc., Compuware Corp., Cygnus
Solutions, Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc., Intel Corp., Metrowerks Inc.,
Rational Software Corp., Sybase Inc., and Tower Technology.

"The new Linux distribution from Microsoft gives the operating system
the credibility it needs to gain a foothold in organizations where it
 has
never gone before," said Jon Hall, Executive Director of Linux
International, a non-profit Linux advocacy organization. Microsoft will
become a corporate member of Linux International, and will make a
substantial donation of funds and equipment to the organization. "Linux
International looks forward to working with Microsoft for the benefit of
current and future Linux users," added Hall.

According to VA Research President and CEO Larry Augustin, "VA Research
is delighted that Microsoft is entering the fast-growing market for
computers powered by Linux." VA Research has announced plans to bundle
MS-Linux and selected Microsoft Office and BackOffice products with its
powerful server, workstation, and laptop computers. VA Research has also
agreed to make Microsoft its exclusive supplier of Linux-based operating
systems going forward. "Having the Office and BackOffice suites running
 on
computers from VA Research will give us a huge advantage in the
 marketplace," said Augustin.

Microsoft has engaged well-known author and programmer Eric S. Raymond
to advise the company on certain intellectual property issues related to
Linux. Raymond's paper "The Cathedral of the Bizarre" was a key factor
 in
Microsoft's decision to develop a Linux product. "While Microsoft will
