Re: Android and the 64 billion bytes question.

2013-10-09 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

The ExFAT was invented by Microsoft specifically for such a removable
storage and support for flash cards with this sizes (it supports up to 64
ZB). Its fully supported under Android (Samsung wrote the kernel module, so
there's a native support for it), and you can grab the kernel module from
here:
https://github.com/dorimanx/exfat-nofuse

You can use ext3/ext4 (ext2 is a dog slow on SD) but then you'll have the
overhead of journaling, and you won't have any compatibility with any
Windows/Mac, in case you want to stick your card into such systems.

Now do you format a 64GB SDXC card to use with Android? the opinions on
the web are all over the place. some say it's OK to keep ExFat (it came
formatted) since it's pretty stable in FUSE and the Cyanogenmod supports
it. others say one should partition it down to two 32GB parts of Fat32
for compatibility with older OS in case you need to reset (also I found
my version of CWM does not read ExFAT). Others say ext2 is the way to
go, or ext3 (Windows machines won't support that easily, but I don't
care since I don't run one).

Basically it's a question of what FS is the most convenient, stable,
safe and speed-optimized for flash. The forums people argue but I feel
none of them have serious ways to back up their opinions. If you have
any facts or educated opinions, I'd be happy to learn.

Yes, there is, but just like with FAT, FAT32, NTFS, SMB etc - you won't see
Microsoft chasing Ubuntu, CentOS or Red Hat for royalties. MS is asking
royalties from the hardware vendors, not from you or your favorite
distribution.

BTW: Both Fedora and Ubuntu already support exfat.

I'm running Debian Squeeze and the timezone database is fine. But I do
 subscribe to Debian updates.

If you want to be sure, run this command:

 tzdump -v Asia/Jerusalem |grep 2013

It should output something like this:

 Asia/Jerusalem Thu Mar 28 23:59:59 2013 UTC = Fri Mar 29 01:59:59 2013
 IST isdst=0 gmtoff=7200
 Asia/Jerusalem Fri Mar 29 00:00:00 2013 UTC = Fri Mar 29 03:00:00 2013
 IDT isdst=1 gmtoff=10800
 Asia/Jerusalem Sat Oct 5 22:59:59 2013 UTC = Sun Oct 6 01:59:59 2013
 IDT isdst=1 gmtoff=10800
 Asia/Jerusalem Sat Oct 5 23:00:00 2013 UTC = Sun Oct 6 01:00:00 2013
 IST isdst=0 gmtoff=7200

And if you have Geoff's output, then your clock would be moving at the
 wrong time[1] :)

This is with a really up to date timezone data:

 $ /usr/sbin/zdump -v /etc/localtime | grep 2013
 /etc/localtime Thu Mar 28 23:59:59 2013 UTC = Fri Mar 29 01:59:59 2013
 IST isdst=0
 /etc/localtime Fri Mar 29 00:00:00 2013 UTC = Fri Mar 29 03:00:00 2013
 IDT isdst=1
 /etc/localtime Sat Oct 26 22:59:59 2013 UTC = Sun Oct 27 01:59:59 2013
 IDT isdst=1
 /etc/localtime Sat Oct 26 23:00:00 2013 UTC = Sun Oct 27 01:00:00 2013
 IST isdst=0

(you can use Asia/Jerusalem too, but make sure /etc/localtime indeed
contains the content of /usr/share/zoneinfo/Israel or
/usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Jerusalem - or a symlink to one of them.)

You need version *2013d* of the database if you want the latest Israeli
 law.

True, but even the HP corporate drivers tend to be big, slow and have

E.g. In many versions the installation will fail if the printer is
connected to the machine while the USB driver is being installed.
(Though, in HP's defense this a pure Windows issue and not HP

Re: Cloud Backup

2013-02-23 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

Few things:

   - You can use S3, but then the rsync could be problematic, since there
is no rsync server on the other side.
   - Amazon EBS is nice, but the Micro instance to use it with EBSis free
based on your usage. I used the free Micro instance as a slave DNS and
after 2 months I had to pay for it since my free usage has been somehow
   finished.
   - You can use several scripts that you can find on Google to rsync with
   Dropbox.

Thanks,
Hetz

2013/2/23 Nadav Har'El n...@math.technion.ac.il

Hi, I'm looking for a cloud backup solution for Linux, where I'll be
able to use rsync, sftp (and similar utilities) to a remote server
to back up by files, and when needed, look at individual files (e.g.,
using sshfs) or restore all my files.

I am *not* looking for a solution based on special purpose (and usually,
closed source) utilities or daemons that attempt to decide for me what to
back up and when - I want to be of full control of this process.

For the last 3 years, I've been using the services of rsync.net, and
they're doing exactly what I want. However, the storage price I pay them
is 40 cents per gigabyte per month, is 4 times that of Amazon's, so I
think there must be a cheaper solution.

One thing I've been thinking - wouldn't it be fairly easy to store my
files on Amazon's S3 or even more simply EBS, and then run rsync server
on a micro instance on EC2? Sounds like a cheap, convenient backup
solution for Linux diehards like myself, and I wonder if anyone has
done this before and then I won't need to code this myself?

 Thanks,
 Nadav.

Re: Current Video Card winning horse?

2012-10-09 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

2012/10/9 Ira Abramov lists-linux...@ira.abramov.org

 Ahoy maties!

The time has come for me to upgrade some of my antique hardware, and I
have ordered myself a nice mega-monitor with the ass-whooping resolution
of 2550X1440. This means the old VGA on board won't do and I need to
look at higher-end stuff (DVI-D at minimum). I googled this issue quite
a bit, limiting google for results only from the last month and still
I'm not sure who do we not-hate this month (I suppose I'm looking at ATI
 and nVidia)

First, you need a card with DVI-DL (Dual Link) and not DVI-D, or else it
won't work on your new monitor.

As for which card: I would recommend any nVidia based 6XX. The 610/620 are
very low end (~200 NIS) models, but they are slow, specially if you use
dual monitors, but they could get the job done, just don't expect stellar
3D performance.

650 and up models are great, but they cost more.

Hetz

 Requirements:
 - have it play nice with Xorg (Debian/Ubuntu).
 - preferably FOSS drivers, but only if rock solid.
 - preferably a GPU that supports CUDA/OpenCL (though the only client I
have for it ATM is BOINC https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing )
 - preferably dual-port, so I can send a signal to a secondary
   screen/projector.
 - No special gamer mad features needed. The most 3D I'll do with it is
   probably Desktop Cube :)

 Thanks in advance!

Re: alcatel X220

Hello,

CentOS 6.3? you have 2 options:

1. You can use wvdial to create the script to dial and use it.
2. You can download, compile and install the latest NetworkManager, which
supports most Cellular modems.

Make sure you also install the latest version of usb_modeswitch package,
since this modem is dual purpose (when you stick it in, it's USB storage,
and after NetworkManager identifies it, it uses the switch command to
switch it into Modem mode).

I have something close to what you got (X220D), and it works perfectly, but
I use Fedora 17.

Re: looking for a wireless pci card

2011-12-19 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,
Small advice - Don't go there. I have an Edimax PCI card (the one that
comes with no less then 3 antennas).

The PCI version doesn't give you any advantage in terms of speed,
reliability etc, unless you want to save a USB port.

You'll find many more Wireless USB devices, and they're more cheap.

Good Luck,

So I'm looking for a new card recommendation, one that works good under

Re: questuins about linux

2011-12-16 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

You're trying 40 different Linux systems, and yet you're not giving enough
info about your problems:

1. What are you trying to play? Which files? FLA? FLA files (if you mean
Adobe's FLA files) are not going to run under Linux since you'll need
Adobe's Windows tools. You can try to use Wine, but for that you'll need to
fiddle with tons of things to make it work.

2. What kind of permissions problem? Care to give examples?

Remember: I don't know who told you about Linux, but Linux *cannot* replace
Windows 1-to-1 for all scenarios.

Thanks,
Hetz

script to upload from URL

2011-12-13 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I've written a simple bash script to upload a file from a remote server as
a CGI script (yes, I know, I should use another language, but it's just a
proof-of-concept).

It goes like this: A simple HTML page gives the user a text line to enter a
URL and upload button, which submits the data using POST to a bash script
(I use the proccgi for transferring the values).

The scripts fetches the URL and launches wget to grab the file, rename it
and move it to a specific directory.

So far, so good. The script works well.

But I have one issue with it: those files are pretty big (1-3 GB) and wget
doesn't show anything while it uploads - in the web browser. I tried using
some redirect tricks, but it still doesn't show anything on the screen. I
can redirect the output to a text file and show it after the upload, but it
defeats the purpose of showing some activity.

So my question: how can I make WGET (or CURL) show anything on my browser
while it downloads the file (uploading it to the server)?

Thanks,
Hetz

Call it asynchronously with ajax or jquery get/post - while waiting
for response you can print whatever you what.

 I second that - that's, for instance, how Google's auto-completion (of
addresses in gmail, search terms in search etc) works - it sets a
background JavaScript thread which runs every second in the background,
reads the input field's value and submit it to the server for process if
it changed (and pulls the results, of course). You can skip the check
input field value part in your case. There must be some JavaScript
libraries which can already help you there (http://jquery.com/ is the
first suspect, but there must be many more lying around).

 Two less related points:

 1. Make sure you verify the URL for any hockery-pockery (e.g. that it's
a genuine legitimate http(s):// URL and not, for instance
file:///etc/passwd or trying to break out of the shell parameter
quoting to inject its own shell commands or encoded javascript that can
 be used for cross-site-scripting :)

 2. While I'm looking for work, I might be available for such small jobs
(I'm not a JavaScript Guru, more of a server-side guy, but should be
able to do something like this with some research).

It's been some time since I last debugged NIS, but IIRC there are
mechanisms that try to prevent normal users from seeing some stuff,
e.g. shadow passwords. Obviously you did not use shadow passwords,
judging from the above. Perhaps the server replies to these only from
low ports or something like that, don't remember.

You can try to run the server with debugging/verbose/whatever and see
if there is anything in its logs.

Interesting. Looks like name-uid translation works, but uid-name don't.

Maybe (for some unknown reason) the reverse NIS map is not there.

 Let's debug it:

 1. First at the NIS level -- The 'passwd' map is a shortcut to

the 'passwd.byname' map, let's test the 'passwd.byuid' map:

 * Enumerate:

 ypcat passwd.byuid

 * Match:

 ypmatch 500 passwd.byuid

 2. If 1. is OK, test at the NSS level:

 getent passwd 500

 Both of these work?

I've set up a lab at home to test it before I deployed it.
 NFS mount works, no problems.

However, with NIS when I login to the client, I see the files and
everything, but the GID show for example as 500 instead of the actual
test group. The user shows correctly.

 idmap etc works..

 Any suggestions?

Did you tell your system to use groups from NIS in /etc/nsswitch.conf ?
(might need to put 'nis' before 'compat' / 'files' if you want it to
 override a local equivalent value)

We use Clickatell to get SMS's in Australia. Checking their price guide at
 http://www.clickatell.com/pricing/message_cost.php it says $US0.0472 per
sms on a 1k sms package to mobile networks in Israel, which Google
translates to 0.179 shekel, and goes slightly down as you buy larger
packages. How does that price sound to you?

Re: [OFFTOPIC] Finding the next lucrative niche (was: Re: Goodbye, Lingnu)

2011-11-14 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I'll give you one: Supporting hosting customers.

Explanation: there are over 40 businesses here in Israel which provides VPS
and dedicated server renting solutions.
Most of those businesses (including mine) provide the machine to the
customers as unmanaged,
which means: the support you'll get relates *only* to network (if your
VPS/Server) can communicate to and from the server
The other part of support: shutting down/restart/pause/reset the server.

Anything else - you're on your own. You can purchase a bank of hours for
support or you can get emergency support for a higher price.

There are, of course, some hosting businesses which will give you managed
service, but in most case I would strongly recommend to get a freelance who
will do the job for the client.

Why? because they *SUCK AT IT* ! spreading root privileges all over the
place, changing permissions of directories and files to 777, opening the
internal firewall (if it exists, most of the time it's not) to everyone+his
dog, and other nonsense stuff, and I'm also talking about the *BIG*
providers which are also ISP - they suck, period!

I think that this niche is mostly empty and people can get some
jobs/contracts with such customers.

If anyone want to register himself, I have a neutral forum for that. see
here: http://hosts-forum.com/index.php

Hope this helps,
Hetz

remote directory/partition

2011-10-22 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

Here is a theoretical question:

Lets say I have a Linux server in Israel, and I have a block of storage
(lets say iSCSI partition for this example) in USA, and I want to mount it
on my server in Israel.
iSCSI over such a long distance and with big latency (thanks to our ISP's)
is a big no no, it's too slow. NFS is also not a good idea (here's
whyhttp://goo.gl/vn4GM
).

I can take this storage, format it and export it from my server in USA, but
which protocol would give me:

   1. All (or almost all) functionality of a local mounted device
   2. Can work with long distance latencies
   3. won't kill the machine if the remote directory is disconnected /
   disappeared
   4. If possible - supported (either directly or using 3rd party driver) on
Windows 2008 (Linux is the main concern, Windows is optional)

i'm not looking for FTP solution (I checked curlftpfs, which is FTP
implemented using FUSE. it's nice but when it disconnects, the machine will
have issues), and webdav (slow)

Any suggestions?

Hetz

a good question. the project page doesn't mention VMWare at all).
I'm considering libvirt, since I need to use it with a panel (which is why I

Re: Cell phones and Hebrew support

Hi Stan,
First, you need to decide which OS based do you want your phone, and maybe
which brand.

If it's Android, then Galaxy S-2 or the old Galaxy S could fit the bill.
Hebrew support can be added to them easily.

You can buy from eBay, but make sure that it support the band that your
cellular company supports.

Good luck,
Hetz

But now I need to sacrifice all that, and get a cellphone. I am looking
at prices on ebay and comparing them in dismay with those in the local

I would buy through ebay. What is involved in installing Hebrew support

Re: next smartphone thoughts

2011-08-26 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I read your email and I was quite amused how you gave Free to iOS. In what
terms is it free? can you get the iOS code under *any* license? no. Can you
modify it? no.
On the Android side you're yelling it's not GNU. It isn't, but you can get
gingerbread code (AOSP) without any issue.

No, you don't need to write your application in Java. You can write them in
Perl, Shell, whatever, as long as you're installing the needed libraries. I
have full Bash, Apache, OpenSSH (server client), PHP and other stuff
running just find on my Nook Color, and I'm sure you can do it too on Galaxy
S2.

As for preventing access from APK to parts of your device, I'm sure that
there are applications which can help you limit the access. I haven't played
with it before.

So my recommendation: Take Galaxy S-2 (or the new LG which is faster then
S2, don't remember it's name) and use it. Until you do, install Android SDK
on your machine, and use the emulator to run Gingerbread, and play with it,
install stuff on it, see how do you feel with the system.

Good Luck,
Hetz

2011/8/26 Erez D erez0...@gmail.com

It is time to get a new smartphone. so i have to choose one.

 Some history:
for a long time i wanted a GNU/Linux phone, and when the moco arrived, i
 was happy.
While I was thinking of getting a moco, happy about the freedom but not
happy about it lagging technology-wise, there was a new better gnu/linux
 phone - the Nokia N900
This was really good news, the biggest cellular manufacturer - nokia, is
thinking open source is the way.
So I got myself an N900, and was very happy with it. i compiled a kernel,
installed gnu/linux programs on it, and actually used it as a computer.
Then nokia abandoned the N900's OS - maemo (when the N900 was around 1 year
on the market) , in favor of a new one, called Meego. that was sad for the
N900 users as it ment no more support for the N900.
But it was not that dire for the open source people, as meego was supposed
to be another GNU/Linux open source os. it's like replacing debian with
redhat. That is not nice for maemo lovers/users, but it's not like
 abandoning open source whatsoever.
But then nokia decided to abandon meego in favor of windows mobile... this
 was a major shock.

I thought a company like nokia has some unwritten obligation to it's
customers - not to abandon their products after such a short time,
especially if these products were only half baked to begin with (N900 came
with no mms, no videocall, calender not full baked) etc...) awaiting updates
 to make it fully baked.
so i was wrong and felt abandoned twice ... (once for maemo for meego, once
 for meego for wp7)

now for my problem - i need to get a new smartphone (from work), and wanted
 a gnu/linux one.
 My options:
 1. iphone - not gnu/linux nor open. actually this is the closest as can be
in terms of free as speech.
 2. symbian - deprecated. should be open somtimes (i wouldn't get my hopes
 up for nokia promises)
 3. webos - gnu/linux but deprecated
 4. maemo - gnu/linux but deprecated
 5. meego (N9) - though about it, but once bitten from nokia - twice shy.
nokia does not even say they expect to continue with meego
 6. android - live and kicking, actually the most popular. it is somehow
open, and linux kernel. not gnu though.

So i have to choose one of these.
I thought about android (galaxy s2). but i do not like it that i need to
program only in java, and that when i install apps, even simple as clock
widget - they require full access to my addressbook, to my setting and to
 the internet.
I would love to block it via other ways (selinux/apparmor/iptables etc...).
I miss my linux apps. (can run in any way a gnu/linbux dist under chroot ?)
can i write non java apps and give to my friends ?

what are your thoughts on the issue ?

 thanks,
 erez.

MySQL / PostgreSQL limitation

2011-08-22 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I'm thinking about some project, and I was wondering about something: lets
say I'm setting up a really-big-web site. Something in the scale of Walla or
Ynet.
My question is about the DB: Where are exactly my limitations that I need to
go master/slave, replications etc.
Is it related to memory? processor? I know that many uses replication etc
due to shortage or RAM and/or CPU power.

Lets say I have a machine with 512GB RAM, 20 cores, 20TB disks. Such a
machine should handle a huge load without any issue. With such a machine,
theoretically, can a single MySQL / PostgreSQL handle such a load? (few
hundred thousands connected users at once).

Thanks,
Hetz

what was the name of the app...

Hi,

Few years ago I heard about an app which can connect few servers behind it
- and show itself as a single cpu (single machine), so if you ran an
application on this app, it would do the magic of dividing parts to other
servers and combining them back.

Anyone remember the application name or URL for it?

Well, a potential customer of mine wants to run different apps (most of them
are not cluster aware), on a small cluster (50 servers, dual processors
each). After I sent the previous email I remebered openMosix and saw what
you were talking about.

I thought about OpenSSI, not sure if it fits that task.

email alias issue

2011-07-19 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I have a weird issue with /etc/aliases
I've setup the root to send emails to my email (h...@benhamo.org) and ran
the newaliases command to rebuild the aliases db file.
I've restarted sendmail.

And yet, sendmail simply ignores this alias and tries to send emails to
r...@benhamo.org (which of course doesn't exists).

Any suggestions?

PS: this setup used to work perfectly well up to few weeks ago, and then
after some updates (CentOS 5.6) stopped working.

Thanks,
Hetz

Well, the aliases file creates an alias to the local root. You say
mails get sent to r...@benhamo.org - it sounds like this is NOT the
local root but the (non-existent) root on the (possibly non-existent)
 remote host.

Make sure your test mails are sent to the local root. Check what other
rules get applied - e.g., maybe sendmail rewrites all the destination
addresses with @benhamo.org or whatever. Make friends with sendmail
 -bt.

What changed with the upgrade to CentOS 5.6? Were all the dbs rebuilt?

Change the destination of the alias to something you have as a CW entry in
 your .mc file.

For example, mine has localhost.localdomain and others, so you could change
 the alias to:
 whoeveriam@localhost.**localdomain

With (at least) CWlocalhost.localdomain in the mc file.

Remeber to restart the deamon too. Sendmail now does some crazy stuff with
 an authorized and
 unathorized deamons :-(

Re: email alias issue

2011-07-19 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Well, since I was mentioned

Ido, I'm trying to avoid flooding the mailing list with gazillion lines of
configuration files, so I started asking a question about domains and
sendmail. If someone would have said show your configuration files, then I
would have posted a link for the files without a problem.

I didn't want to switch from sendmail to another MTA due to a simple reason:
the specific server hosts few of my blogs, ticket system, forums and other
info that is relevant to many people. People wanted to get notifications
email about their tickets, so I can't just tell people wait, I'm replacing
mail server right now, hold on while I'll start configuring it.

At the end I created a test VPS server with CentOS 5.6 and sendmail, and I
found out that switching from sendmail to exim in CentOS is simple as: yum
install -y exim system-switch-mail exim

Thanks to Redhat's organized configuration files, it did the trick. A minute
later, emails were going out without a problem.

 Yes, DON'T work with sendmail

 rant
I really *hate* these sorts of non-answers. They don't help at all with
the immediate problem and only really serve to annoy the person asking the
question. Yes, I realise that in this case the questioner ended up taking
this person's advice, but there may well have been plenty of cases where
they might not have been able to. Questions like this don't usually outline
the rationale for why they are using the software/hardware/whatever they're
asking about, and neither should they have to.

Yes you do. If you are saying I have a problem with something, and want
others to help you, you should provide as much as possible information about
the issue. Hetz imho gave only limited information about the problem, and
where he think that it might be. That's does not helping us to help him, so
usually when someone lack of proper information about the whole thing, get
an answer as detailed as they provided.
Even though I consider Hetz as a friend, he should know better and provide
more information on the subject, such as I have a new installation or old
installation and here are the entire settings I provided etc... all of
that information even if it seems not very helpful, it might provide a clue
for the helpers to help him. Let's assume that you have only 10 reasons why
sendmail acts like it acts, don't you think that such information can limit
the amount of guess work ?

If I ask about a problem I'm having with my cat, the last thing I want to
hear from someone is that I should have a dog instead. The fact is that I
have a cat. There may be good reasons for recommending a dog instead, and I
can see why it might be relevent to mention this when answering, but to just
say get a dog is not at all helpful.

And if you *must* say get a dog, at least say why.

Wrong way example that does not suite the issue at hand.
If you rant that your cat does not understand your commands, and you want
to make it understand it, then take a dog is the answer. That's not what
you are looking for, please provide additional information or rephrase your
question regarding the issue with your cat. Maybe the problem is that the
cat keep on getting hurt because it stand on electric oven and get burns,
and then the solution is completly different, but when you phrase it that
you want an animal that answer commands, the the answer you'll have is get
 a dog

Re: DNS question

2011-06-17 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Well, the story goes like this:

I hosted few domains in afraid.org as a premium user, until I found few
days ago that this service has some issues, so I thought to test a DNS
service of mine. I'm not looking for something like AnyCast stuff which was
mentioned here. I already got servers in US and EU which serves other
clients, so setting up a small VPS on them for DNS service (as slaves) is
not an issue.

As for business side that Amos mentioned here: This setup is just for my
domains. I'm not going to compete against any big companies who offer DNS
management. If all works well and I'll find a business justification for it,
I'll hire one of the people in this list to check the setup and another
person to write a web front-end, but it's really just for testing at the
moment.

Currently I'm sick and tired of DNS management crap from many competing
Israeli companies. I just moved a web site to one of my clients and we
waited 72 hours for a DNS change and it didn't happened, and I had to waste
3 hours on the phone to explain to the support guy about records changing,
DKIM etc.

Thanks,
Hetz

2011/6/17 Ariel Biener ar...@tau.ac.il

Without discussing the business reasoning, what you want is the following:

 1. A stealth master hosted somewhere and protected.
 2. A number of slaves, spread geographically.

Now, discussing the business case, I am not at all sure that hosting 4
servers is viable. So, you can host only the stealth masters, and see if you
can buy slave dns services that will be pulling zones from your stealth
 master.

Also, if you have friends that have similar needs you can co-share dns
 slaves.

In general, unless you are a large business with branches spread throughout
the world, or an ISP, or critical infrastructure, hosting your own stealth
master and buying any kind of slave services from others should do fine.

sftp-server man pages don't give any help about this issue.

The `sftp-server' is a free program, so you can take the source and
fix it any way you want. I wanted to check this so I downloaded the
openssh source tar ball and looked at sftp-server.c .

I found out that without any change, you can get a log message when
the `sftp-server' close a file, this message include the file name
and the number of bytes read and written. By watching this log you
can do whatever you want after each action.

Since these are informative messages, You must change the `sftp-server'
logging level to INFO, by adding -l INFO arguments to the `Subsystem'
 command in the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file.

If don't want the messages in the SYSLOG, you can add the -e argument
 and redirect the stderr (i.e ... -l INFO -e 2/dir/.../log-file).

You can use a FIFO file when redirecting so you can read the messages
by a program or script directly. (please note, every time the sftp
session ends, there is an EOF on the reading side, so you must restart
 to read).

I did not check what happens when more then one `sftp-server' is
running, I leave it to you.

The messages from a short session:
session opened for local user ehud from [192.168.3.6]
open /var/tmp/chk-ip.sh flags WRITE,CREATE,TRUNCATE mode 0770
close /var/tmp/chk-ip.sh bytes read 0 written 1326

What I want to do is to run a script (on the server side) that after user
logged in and uploaded a file.

sftp-server man pages don't give any help about this issue.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Hetz

Richard Stallman answer to me

2011-06-05 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi People,

I just got this answer from Richard Stallman.

Apparently, he *does* plan to give a talk in Israel, but not in any Israeli
university.
I actually find this pretty weird, considering that most of the universities
in Israel are full of staff from the left-side of the political map (TAU for
exmaple?)

To: Hetz Ben Hamo ‫het...@gmail.com‬

I don't advocate a blanket boycott of Israeli universities, but I am
not going to campaign against it either. I see where they are coming
from: Israel's occupation policies are horrible. Nonviolent protests
are crushed with persistent brutality. (See
http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Columnists/Article.aspx?id=221897.)

Palestinians who are against violence are looking desperately for
some method of nonviolent resistance. I can't blame them for it
even if I don't agree entirely with the details. Thus, I decided
to follow their policies in the trip they organized.

I wish I had discussed the issue in advance and avoided
having to cancel a plan I had agreed to.

I will give at least one talk in Israel, at a non-university venue,
and I am hoping more can be arranged.

sponsorship?

2011-05-29 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I just read this morning that Richard Stallman will not come to Israel due
to pressure from the Palestinians who sponsor his visit.
You can read it here:
http://www.calcalist.co.il/internet/articles/0,7340,L-3519167,00.html?dcRef=ynet

My question: I'm pretty sure that hotel + ticket is not such a huge price.
Is there any company that can sponsor his visit, so we might actually see
mister Stallman here after all?

Thanks,

Re: sponsorship?

2011-05-29 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Demanding that he will not talk to the Palestinians? umm, with the political
situation today, I hardly belive he will agree to that.

I was thinking more of: If we can find a company who's willing to pay the
flight tickets, hotel etc, and then let Stallman decide whether he wants to
appear at the Palestinians universities or not.

It's quote a shame that the Palestinians would prefer to do those tricks..

David, I read the article, and as a person who wants to hear Stallman's FSF
talks (and not political talks), so I do want to believe we can find a
solution for that.

Even if we don't find a company willing to finance the visit we can
definitely raise funds for this purpose.

By the way, if Israel would pay for the visit I demand that he will not give
 a talk for the Palestinians.

You are missing the sas controller driver probably. Try to do lspci to find
the sas controller model and from there you'll need to find the driver.

Any suggestion?

virtualbox and ulimit

2011-05-05 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I have a very weird behavior with virtualbox on my machine: it works few
moments and then the vm freezes while the virtualbox process take +100% CPU.
(I replaced the CPU fan, graphics card etc..)

I filed a bug report, and the virtualbox dev people told me to create a
core dump to see whats going on. I used this page (
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Core_dump) to create it.

However, after setting the ulimit to unlimited (ulimit -c unlimited),
virtualbox started to work perfectly well, which is really weird.

So my question is: On Fedora 14 (X86) with virtualbox - what is the
recommended ulimit settings?

 Hi,

I have a flatbed scanner (by HP) attached to my Linux machine, and I often
need to scan rectangular items such as photographs, CD inserts, and the
 occasional piece of paper.

At the moment, I follow a tedious manual process to do that: The scanner
generates a big image of everything it sees on glass window, and then using
Gimp I manually rotate the image (because I can't place it on the window
 with
100% precision) and then crop it to the rectangle.

Supposedly, Photoshop has an Automate-Crop and Straighten Photos
  feature
 (see http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/crop-straighten/)
but I couldn't find such a feature in Gimp.

I was really surprised that I couldn't easily find some program to do this
automatically: The program would recognize (using a relatively simple
 algorithm)
the foreground rectangle in the image, rotate it to be perfectly
 horizontal,
and then crop the image to it.

Does anyone know of such a program? Obviously, it needs to be free software
running on Linux. Bonus points if it's a command line program (a la netpbm
or imagemagick) and not an integrated GUI program. Extra bonus points if
it's a pipeline of netpbm or netpbm-like tools :-) But any other sort of
(free) solution would also be acceptable.

 Thanks,
 Nadav.

You're saying you want to apply something to the site blog.hetz.biz - but
 - the configuration snippet you've pasted, deals with a different domain -
vps.net.bz (as per the ServerName directive).

Unless I am missing something very obvious - that configuration snippet is
not even supposed to have any influence on blog.hetz.biz - unless all your
domains share the same website and there's no NameVirtualHost directive on
 the global configuration at all...

Re: rewriterule help?

2011-04-22 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo

Let's continue then... since this domain (VirtualHost) won't be serving any
OTHER traffic, there's no point at conditioning the rewrites (and putting
them into our debug process). RewriteCond can be removed.

You've also placed a RewriteOptions Inherit. Which means the rewrite engine
inherits some configuration from the global configuration - which is unknown
to us. Unless you have a very good reason - please remove that too.

Both conditions were left from another configuration which was global
indeed.

Finally, if all else fails; Why do you need RewriteRule anyways? :)

 What's wrong with:

 Redirect permanent / http://vps.net.bz/

First, it doesn't move the parameters. if someone comes to
blog.hetz.biz/?p=300 - it should go to vps.net.bz/?p=300

Second, this requires a new virtualhost (for vps.net.bz) - am I right?

That's not what I understand from the documentation:
 http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/mod_alias.html#redirect - but
again I may be missing something.

I missed that. Thanks.

Second, this requires a new virtualhost (for vps.net.bz) - am I right?

Which you already have at the moment, no? As there's no ServerAlias in that
VirtualHost you pasted, I understood vps.net.bz is on a different vhost.

With ServerAlias, it goes to a loop. I didn't invest much time there, I
simply created another vhost.

Not that I understand what's wrong with a one-line VHost for the old
hostname. From some reason I take this type of configuration cleaner and
easier to debug later (and could also very be more efficient
 performance-wise. or not. :))

vhost one line? 2 lines for VirtualHost and /VirtualHost, 1 line for
ServerName, 1 line for DocumentRoot, so you'll need 4 at the minimum :)

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up regarding the redirect. Seems to be working
now.

Actually, they ran out of IPV4, but the players there have plenty of unused

RIPE / ARIN etc had plenty of time to do something about it, like creating

that this will happened now, since tons of places cannot switch to IPv6 (all

Hello friends, last resort before I go and reinvent the wheel, badly.

I have a system here that creates a dozen images for medias of different
sizes, installing a few dozen machines every day. I would like to make
the process more unified - install the same 4G image on all medias (dd)
and then maximize sda6, the last ext3 partition, and naturally, the
 underlying extended partition sda4.

The only tool that automates resizing like that is parted, and it still
needs a precise partition length instead of use all available space,
and won't resize ext3 if I don't turn off the journaling first (make it
ext2). I tried deducing the maximum partition size with fdisk -l and
other sfdisk instead, but each uses different units and I have no idea
how to convert them all correctly so I'm left with working, non
 overlapping partitions.

I'm prepared to do it the hard way, I just wondered if there's a tool I
missed or an existing script that already does this.

 Thanks.

weird issue with ftp client on windows and Linux

2011-03-22 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi people,

A friend of mine has a weird problem:

In his work, when he's trying to connect to an ftp server with Filezilla and
other clients on Windows to download some work related data, everything
seems to work: he's been asked for user/pass, then he gets the 220 status
message with the text and he can download all the stuff.

But with Linux, with the same filezilla (and other ftp clients), he connects
to the same ftp, gives his user/pass, then he gets the first line of 220
status message and the ftp is freezing, no more text, no nothing. I tried
it with server ftp clients on Linux, disabled his iptables and tried it with
my Linux netbook machine at his work - same results.

I don't think it's related to the company's firewall since it works
perfectly with any ftp client on Windows without any special setting or
proxy.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Hetz

I don't get it. The software that it's there is just for backup stuff (there
are other utils, hard disk icons etc depending on which model).
You can always use gparted or any other partitioning program to erase it, so
why do you want to sell it?

I bought this device a week or so ago, not realizing that it has some
Windows-oriented password protection software imbedded in it in an
invisible partition that seems to occupy about 2MB. I do not want to
fiddle with it, and would like to sell it cheap. The listed price for it
is NIS300; I paid a bit less. If you are interested in it, please drop
me a note and tell me what you would be willing to pay for it.

small dependency question

2011-03-15 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I'm trying to install a small python program, but it refuses to run due to
missing dependency (email.util)

Traceback (most recent call last):

import email.utils
ImportError: No module named utils

I'm using CentOS 5.5 - which RPM has this module? I didn't find anything
useful on google..

Wine, Hebrew and Google Summer of Code

2011-03-02 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but at the moment, Wine doesn't have
yet full Hebrew/Arabic support at the moment. With the correct
encoding you can make Wine show hebrew (in menus etc), but mixing
Hebrew and english still doesn't work and you have to jump through
many hoops to make Wine work well with some hebrew support.

At the moment, in order to make hebrew work, some considerable
investment is required, be it a paid freelancer(s) to work on it or
group of volunteers.

As of this Monday, Google is accepting applications from organizations
for Google summer of code (see here: http://goo.gl/lrt1q ).

My question: Is there any person, group or organization that can
submit an application for Wine Hebrew support? That way, everyone
wins: The student(s) will be paid by Google (I think they'll be happy
to accept Wine Hebrew/Arabic/BiDi to GSOC), and the Linux community
will finally have (if everything goes well) a decent Hebrew/Arabic
implementation in Wine.

What do you think?

Negative for both assumptions: I do not appear on any blacklist, and

There are video courses for MCITP which would cost you a lot less and you

Do you have any idea whether I should study the course?
You know what the price range for similar courses?
 Any advice?

Re: Advice Needed - Bye Bye Nokia!

2011-02-20 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi Amichai,

I'm in the exact position as you with the same phone, yet I'm not planning
to switch for several reasons:

   - Battery life: Try to find any smart phone which can hold more then a
day without charging. Good luck with that. I just found this saturday night
that I forgot to charge my Nokia since Tuesday, and I used it extensivly:
emails, talking, surfing on the net - and the battery wasn't drained fast.
   - Email and Calendar syncing - I don't know about you, but I'm using
Google Calendar with my E72, and it pushes the email and calendar perfectly.
   - Yes, Nokia sold their soul to go with Microsoft, so? It's not that
they're ditching all the E series today, it will take at least a year until
they'll have some Windows Phone 7 only phones catalog. Meanwhile they will
continue giving support to your (and mine) phones.
   - My girl friend has Galaxy S, it's great with sync, surfing the net and
everything, but when it comes to battery life, her phone will die, while
my phone will barely drop a single line in the battery indicator.

All in all, it's really how you look at this situation: as a business
man/freelancer or as a private person. I, as a hosting provider, needs my
phone to work in god-knows what conditions, and I need it to work
continuously without reaching for a charger, and my Nokia E72 does that much
better then Galaxy S.

Hetz

2011/2/20 Amichai Rotman amic...@iglu.org.il

 Hello all,

I need you advice, before I make a horrible mistake - so please bear with
 me and don't flame ;-)

I recently opened a small business and wanted a smartphone with a dedicated
 line.

I ended up buying a Nokia E72 (about 2 months ago). It's an OK phone, but
 it has a few problems.

Then Nokia made their announcement (as I am sure almost all of you know)
about the future OS, so I got mad and even though I always used Nokia phnes
(since my first Nokia 6120D back in the mid '90s) I am willing to switch...

A friend of mine recommends the Samsung Galaxy S - a very good choice for
my needs: Runs Android 2.2 and works perfectly with Push for mail and
calendar sync (the Nokia isn't so great in that department...)

I now have to find a way to cancel my Nokia E72 purchase and switch to the
Galaxy. I also heard about some kind of a Big Brother issue with Android
 devices?

Any of you know how to get out of the Nokia purchase? The Galaxy wasn't
 available at the time.
Am I making a mistake? Is this a smart move?
Is it really a good phone?

 Thanks!

 Amichai.

Hi,

Looking at /var/log/messages, all I see is:

 2. Which Linux distribution is running in the virtual machine?

Google search (rtnetlink answers network is unreachable) yielded the
 following possibilities:
 - Misconfigured IP address in firewall script.

No new IP addresses were added. Default firewall configuration.

 - Network card does not exist (as far as the virtual machine is
 concerned).

exists, I'm ssh'ed to this machine as I write this mail :)

 - Misconfigured network card.

I posted the configuration here. Looks OK to me.

Two of the URLs I got from the above Google search:

Nada. eth0, lo - nothing more.

 2. Which Linux distribution is running in the virtual machine?

 Centos 5.5 64 bit + updates.

Two of the URLs I got from the above Google search:

 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=155299

Looked at both of them. Didn't see anything special which could help.

IPV6?

2011-02-02 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I'm planning to roll out at my hosting business a special package of virtual
machine with IPV6 for people and companies who would like to deploy their
web site for people who want to use IPV6.
(so far the adoption of IPV6 in Israel sucks, even my upstream provider
[Netvision] don't offer it).

I would like to ask: does anyone knows which ISP here has dial-up plans with
IPV6?
(if I'll find that there isn't such a thing, perhaps I'll set up something,
although this take some considerable investment)

Thanks,

Hi,

There's a small company who's called United

They have some issues with Tomcat and Ubuntu. My knowledge with this area

Anyway, they need someone and they need it right now (it seems that there's
some configuration issues), and they'll pay for the consultant who'll fix
this issue

So if you want to contact them (they need it ASAP), here are the details:

Linux firewall vs appliance

2011-01-24 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

I was wondering about the following scenario:

I have 2 lines coming from 2 carriers, each line is 2 Gbit internet
connection. They go to a router, and then there should be a firewall..

Here I have 2 choices:

1. Take a Cisco/Fortigate/Juniper/Whatever box, throw it in, configure it,
and be done with it, while I need to pay some yearly license for updates.
2. Stick some serious Linux server that it will become the firewall.

My question: based on whats available for Linux today (iptables, APF, BFD,
you-name-it..) - could Linux be trusted as a very good firewall for data
center (as an example)? (I know that Checkpoint is using Linux, but they
wrote some additional closed source modules, and I haven't heard any
alternatives of those modules in open source version)

I have read articles with people swear that Linux box should suite it while
other highly recommended the appliances..

Whats your opinion?

As for the bug, it seems that it fixed in SVN, now the various distributions
needs to backport it to the various PHP versions and packages.

Is it really that big a problem to give the long link
 http://blog.hetz.biz/?p=206

I know it's 8 characters longer, and 8 characters are a big deal
noawadays. But still, I'd like to know where I'm going to.

Anyway, both your article and the linked Register. I can't really
reproduce their issue. I tried their example on a not-so-uptodate
 machine I have here:

 $ time php -r '$d = 2.2250738585072011e-308;'

 real0m0.025s
 user0m0.008s
 sys 0m0.016s

I tried playing with this a bit more, and I get the expected flating
 point behaviour:

 $ time php5 -r \$d = 2.2250738585072011e-308; echo \$d+6;
 6
 real0m0.026s
 user0m0.024s
 sys 0m0.000s

 php5-cli 5.2.6.dfsg.1-1

(Tried this on both a 32bit and a 64bit Debian system)

The relevant bug report is here:
 http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=53632

So this bug looks like an odd interaction with the toolchain. Not sure
whose fault it is. But before you panic: check to see if the PHP version
of your is actually broken. It's easy.

Re: Linux web hosting / LAMP

2010-12-15 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,

2010/12/15 Uri Even-Chen u...@speedy.net

 Hi,

I want to build a new social networking website called Speedy Net. I
want to use PHP, Javascript and MySQL (LAMP). I am considering where
to host this website, where one of the options is using Rackspace
Cloud [http://www.rackspacecloud.com]. If I use Rackspace Cloud, I
will need to select what type of hosting I want - cloud servers
(managed or not), cloud sites or cloud files
 [https://signup.rackspacecloud.com/signup?id=1238]. I also need to
select what Linux distribution to use
 [
 http://www.rackspacecloud.com/cloud_hosting_products/servers/technology/index.php#os_apps
 ].
 The available options are:

It really depends where are your users located. I tried few days ago their
cloud offers wrote about it on my business blog
herehttp://blog.hetz.biz/?p=192
.

 Arch 2010.05
 CentOS 5.5
 CentOS 5.4
 Debian 5.0 (Lenny)
 Fedora 14 (Laughlin)
 Fedora 13 (Goddard)
 Fedora 12 (Constantine)
 Gentoo 10.1
 Oracle EL R5U4
 Oracle EL R5U3 JEOS
 Red Hat EL 5.4
 Red Hat EL 5.3
 Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx)
 Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)
 Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
 Ubuntu 8.04.2 LTS (Hardy Heron)

It's really up to you to decide which distribution to use. Red Hat EL costs
more because it includes subscriptions.

I don't know which distribution to choose! I only used Red Hat Linux,
about 10 years ago, and even if I select Red Hat - I don't know which
one. I don't know the difference between distributions, I just know I
 need LAMP.

 What do you recommend?

All of those distributions can do the job well, it's up to you to decide
which you're comfortable with.

Also, I understand if I choose an unmanaged server, I will need to
install everything myself - including Apache, PHP and MySQL? Or are
 they installed in the distributions?

They probably install the minimal distribution and you'll need to either
install with yum or apt-get (depends on the distribution) the rest of the
packages. It shouldn't take more then few minutes to do the install.

One thing that you do need - is to find someone who will manage the
server(s) for you, because Rackspace support won't do the job for you unless
you buy the much more expensive managed solution.

How do I backup the database and files? Do I need to select a managed
 server?

mysqldump, tar, pgdump and other tools available for backup. Do you need to
select a managed server? I didn't see any cloud offer from them which is
managed. They give managing option for physical servers but you'll need to
pay few hundred dollars each month for that.

I also received a list of PHP Web Hosting
 [http://www.webhostingreport.com/best-php-hosting.html], but I'm quite
suspicious of unlimited web hosting, for around $3.50 per month. How
can web hosting be unlimited? Do I really get an unlimited website for
 $3.50 per month?!?

There is no free lunch. Those offers give you slow web site, less then
minimal support, and the servers are not stable at all.

Good luck.
Hetz

Hi,

Then look at Avocent's line of products - IMM/RSA/DRAC are an Avocent
rebrand really, and I suspect iLO has a lot from there as well

 Thanks, I'll talk to them.

BTW, If you sell fat VPS, based on KVM for example, you can simply

provide VNC access to the VMs.

For VPS it's a non issue. For hardware physical servers which does not
belong to me (CoLo) and don't have any KVM solution built, it is an issue.

Geoff, if a physical server doesn't boot, VNC won't help much.

Re: Linux friendly scanner

2010-11-25 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
All HP (and most others) scanners are working fine with Linux and
sane-backend.

Thanks,
Hetz

2010/11/25 Shlomo Solomon shlomo.solo...@gmail.com

My Mustek 1200 UB died and I'm looking for a linux friendly scanner.

The old one worked out-of-the-box in various versions of Mandriva and I
 hope
to find something just as good.

 My criteria:
 - cheap
 - works with Linux (obviously)
 - good quality scans (good is fine - doesn't have to be proffesional
 level)

BTW - I though of a multifuction printer, but I don't print much and
 ink-jets
usually clog up if not used often enough and laser multi-functions are more
 than my budget.

 Any suggestions?

Re: Ubuntu on the Asus 1005PG (Built-in 3G Modem) from Orange

2010-11-24 Thread Hetz Ben Hamo
Hi,
All EEE (from 900 and up) have bluetooth built in, and of course - webcam.

In order to use them, you can either press FN F2, or better yet, use the
eee-control for that.
Grab it here: http://greg.geekmind.org/eee-control/

 Hi All,

As promised, here is my report on the Asus 1005PG from Orange:

I am now writing this report on it.

The first thing I did was to boot Ubunu Lucid UNR from an SD card - no
problem. The UL30 series doesn't boot from SD.

As soon as I got the desktop, I saw all works out of the box. I
right-clicked the NetworkManager icon and clicked the Edit Connections
option. Clicked on the Mobile Broadband tab and added a connection for
Israel and Orange. The first screen of the wizard gave me the Modem name -
Huwei (I think) and then I only had to change the default APN to 'uinternet'
 - that's it!

Over all - this model is less comfortable than the 1000HE, but is no doubt
better: It is lighter, smaller (about %20 smaller) and has a LED screen and
 a better CPU (N450).

The only thing that bugs me is the Bluetooth: Some say it has Bluetooth and
some say it doesn't. When I try to start the service nothing happens and the
Bluetooth setup in the System settings says Bluetooth is not present.

The BIOS doesn't show Bluetooth under the internal devices section, but the
Webcam isn't either and it works

The rep at the mall stand told me she checked with Ronlight and the said
it has Bluetooth, but needs a driver...

Is there a way to find out for sure?

I compared the lspci output between the two models, and it is identical,
and the 1000HE's Bluetooth worked out of the box and has it in the BIOS...

 Thanks!

apt-get install acpi-base?

Hetz

2010/11/24 Amichai Rotman amic...@iglu.org.il

 Thanks Hetz,

I installed it but the daemon cannot start due to missing
eeepc-acpi-scrips, witch cannot be install because acpi-base is missing...

How do I resolve this without braking the system?

 Thanks!

Re: 3G USB Modems

Hi,
As much as I know, all of them work under Linux. I haven't found anyone
which doesn't.

Thanks,

I tried sending this before, when I wasn't a member and it bounced, or the
moderator didn't let it in or something.
Anyway, if this has been posted already, please forgive me.

Does anybody have any experience getting any of the USB 3G modems provided
by any one of the cell carriers here to work on Linux? I want to get one,
but I'm not willing to commit until I know it will work. I'm not afraid of
having to poke around the settings and stuff (I am after all a Linux user)
but I want to know if it has been done before.

 Thanks.
