Web hosting services with servers in Israel or well-connected to IIX?

2007-09-11 Thread Omer Zak
A client of mine is building a Web site for serving the Israeli market.
He is looking for a Web hosting service, which has servers located in
Israel and/or have low-latency links to all major Israeli ISPs.

Any idea which Web hosting companies meeting the above requirement
exist, any recommendations, and where can I find a list of all such
companies?

Thanks,

I thought all the Israeli ISPs provide web hosting services. Bezeqnet,
Netvisiom, Barak etc.

On top of these, maybe there are resellers which might provide better deals
by catering for smaller customers (I'm not talking from personal experience
in Israel but I see it in other countries). E.g. I think Ira still runs
scso.com(?)

How about going to d.co.il and looking for web hosting (Eruach Atarim
(no Hebrew setup on this machine))?

Yes, all ISPs in Israel provide Web hosting services - but at higher
cost than companies which specialize in Web hosting.
My client is looking for companies, which specialize in Web hosting, and
whose servers have good connections to Israeli ISPs.

Another question. How big is the difference in latency and throughput
experienced by Israelis surfing to Web sites hosted in USA, by a
low-cost Web hosting service vs. Web hosting service, which hosts sites
in Israel?

In other words, is the price difference justified by quality of service?

P.S.: for those who are looking for the offtopic warning, this is
on-topic because the Web site to be deployed by my client is based upon
the LAMP stack, and we are not looking for Web hosting services, which
host only on MS-Windows based servers.

Well, there are only 3 that I know of. NetVision (incorporating 013/Barak),
BEZEQ BENLEUMI, 012/Internet Zahav. If Bynet offers hosting, they will be more
expensive, but far more professional.

Enourmous. My average ping times to servers on the Netvision (my ISP)
local LAN is around 12ms. Ping times to the U.S. range from around 225
to 1200 ms depending upon the time of day, the day of the week and how
well they are connected to Netvision's ISP.

This really depends on the application you are developing rather than
absolute numbers. If your application is testing ping response then
even minor differences are significant enough to justify the greater
cost. If you are developing an ecommerce site having a page load a
second slower is less critical. If you are developing a site that will
require large amounts of storage space then the price difference goes up
astronomically. As a general rule, for most web applications I have
come across the cost difference is not justified.

Try sweethome.co.il. I use them for shared hosting, but they also
offer dedicated and VPS. If I recall correctly, they are a bit pricier
than some of the ISPs.

Anyhoo, dedicated hosting prices in israel are crap. If you bring your
own server it will cost you more than a rented server with roughly the
same specs abroad.

You can expect ~200ms latency from teh US, that is noticeable. You can
host in europe if you want a bit better latency but without the ripoff
prices in Israel.

I did a project a couple of years where the main website was hosted in
the US, and was meant for US and Israeli users alike. What we did
eventually was put an image server in Israel, sync it with the images
on the main server constantly, etc. It did get us a lot of speed gain
since this app has a lot of images on it.

In other words, is the price difference justified by quality of service?

If your audience is Israeli, yes.

013 Barak are probably the best and easiest to work with even after the
merge with netivision.

I have a number of servers hosted there including a system we implement for
a SaaS customer that has been running stably for several years.
