Look again at what you wrote: "we have HERE both emacs and vi...". Is this
what you call PORTABLE? If you send your output to some Joe running out-of-
the-box Redhat distribution, do you think he'll be able to view them? Telling
him to "get this-and-that software, run xterm -fn heb8x13, click M-x
show-me-this-file-in-Hebrew in emacs..." is a chicken and egg problem if
your document is an introduction to Linux :)

So, until we have an out-of-the-box Hebrew distribution (this is what Ivrix
hopes to be), if you want your documents to be viewable by *anybody*, you'll
need to pick a format like Postscript or PDF that is viewable by *anybody*.
Of course, it doesn't matter how you create these files: I'll use Hebrew
Latex 2.09, You'll use MS-Word, or whatever, until one program is good
enough to get the attention of all Hebrew writers. Of course, it's always
best to have your documents in multiple formats, and let your users choose.
The US DOJ keeps the (interim) judgement against MS on their site in
Word-Perfect format - I wonder why not MS-Word :)

The font new.iso08.f16 in my package hebkeys.tar.gz (from
http://www.cs.bgu.ac.il/~zivav/hebrew) includes line drawing chars.

Whatever: Visual, Semi-Logical, Full-Logical, Unicode, etc.
You even don't have to put a meta tag (it can be guessed automatically).

No; Only open standards.

But in any case, as I wrote, it's not yet there.

Re: wrote hebrew general FAQ

1999-12-12 Thread Tzafrir Cohen
distros that can be installed on a dos partition: phatlinux,
armedlinux, winlinx2000 [anyone tried Mandrake's lnx4win?].
Furthermore - there are some full-enough linux mini-distros that
actually can be downloaded (size-wise) from the internet. LoopLinux
(formly DosLinux) comes to mind. Any other suggestions?
* As for sources of software: linuxberg has a couple of israeli mirros
(see http://www.linuxberg.com). You should also mention freshmeat
(http://freshmeat.net). Both are Good indices. Any others?
(maybe DaveCentral, LinuxApps).
* DosEMU is nice, but today users need windows emualtors. Mention wine
and vmware (http://www.vmware.com - not free, though).
* As for dos connectivity - mtools are worth mentioning. They would be
much more intuitive for a dos user.
* Are linuxcof/yast/lizard worth mentioning?

some factual correction:
* Linux is not only for "386,486, 586". I think you can now say that linux
can run on just about any computer, including PCs and Macs, and just about
any other computer type.
* A full RH installation nowadays is >1GB. I believe that other distros
"cost' more disk space.
* I think it is preffered to mount dos parititions and such under /mnt
* about setting the hardware clock - on RH you have hwclock. Does it
exist on other distros? anything similar?

I consider it as "alpha", but some Hebrew sites, including leading
and famous, already use it as production, even for critical jobs like
e-commerce (yes, it supports SSL).

Currently, I'm trying to avoid "sales", because the current stage
(alpha) causes a lot of effort to be spent on each installation, so
other important things (like completion of the beta version, or
putting the Hebrew Netscape in my FTP server) are delayed. I hope to
reach the first beta soon, but I don't promise anything.

Regarding to the FAQ: I'll be happy to host it. My own web site is
already powered by my stuff, and will have a major upgrade in the
following days. In addition to host it, I'll open a port that you can
use as a proxy to access web pages in other sites, in your preferred
Hebrew method (Visual, Logical, and even without Hebrew fonts). Note:
Currently I have a slow connection (128Mb FR through Aquanet). When
this proxy will be up, please don't overload it; I hope to have ADSL
in Q1 of 2000, and then everything will be better. In addition, my
server is very weak and its disk is full (I planned to buy a real
server this week, but as you could guess from my previous message, it
is not a good idea, so it will be delayed by a week or two; Hopefully
it will save me $100-$200, or even more).

thanks Moran for the wonderful initiative! I have yet to read the entire
file but it seems like a pretty good scheme to start with.

some remarks:

1. like people said, Visual Hebrew is the right target for now. try to
get Qtext 8, and re-save the info in Visual
2. there are quite a few grammatic and spelling mistakes I saw, but
that's for the later part of proofing.
3. from stage 1 make sure you have links betwen the index and answers,
and between the answers themselves whenever useful.
4. try graphics too! use a more readable font (like David or
Narkisim) and capture into GIFs as a universal version once all is done.
5. ask Eli Marmor to let you display your files through CAWABANGA on his
website once it's finished, so we can all enjoy it in any encoding.

Eli? Is CAWABANGA installable on other machines by now? what's the
status on its distribution?

Hey guys, how about some constructive comments for a change? Have better
ideas? (I know I would have suggested using LaTeX with Hebrew).

I have a constructive idea: someone with Microsoft Word (e.g., Moran),
please save this document as Postscript (in Windows: "print to file", using
a postscript printer). We can all view Postscript files, right?

Right now, postscript (or pdf) files are the only portable way we have
of seeing Hebrew documents. Of course, it's only for seeing documents, not
editing them, but it's an important first step.

A bit wierd to write a linux faq in word, aint it?

Anyway, I'm sorry but that i don't have time to read it right now (too
many projects lately) , but I did
managed to get xemacs to use hebrew fonts (xemacs mule 21.1 on my system)
with some dificulty, which might accure if you have enough fonts
enstalled, and your tring to use one that also has an english version, if
its relevent i'm willing to take some time and try to write down the
explenation (it includes some stuff on the way the font dirs are built) if
its relevent mail me.
Also there was an hebrew.el file i found some time ago, which i don't know
if it still exists, but I got a copy of, which still has some problems,
which i can describe (I know where they are) but i can't fix (It will only
display the text aligned left - not right - but enables input right to
left). The problem is that it doesn't translate the period right when
switching direction. If anyone is willing to try and help solve the
problem (should know elisp) then i would also gladly write some
explenation on using the file, and can post the fixed version.
