Ditto, thank you from all of us, and the penguins.. - Original Message - From: Tim Wright I got an email from a person of whom would prefer to stay anonymous yesterday. Offering to donate $100 to CLUG in exchange for 50 floppy discs that we have left over from the installfest. I took the liberty of accepting his kind generousity, and thanking him very much on our behalf. I'm *guessing* he's on the list, so big thanks :) I guess next time we should do a little budget beforehand. tim http://www.cosc.canterbury.ac.nz/~tnw13 Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum viditur.
Re: PDF?
I bought that book from amazon, at the start of march (when the exchange rate was 0.4184 - no my memory is not _that_ good, i'm looking at the visa statement), anyway, it cost me $95.51... not bad eh, for a free book :) The proper publishers version is as thick as the chch yellow pages too though. I've used the book a few times, but it looks good on the shelf. I find the HTML version to be the best... its alot easier to navigate (mataphorically: RAM) when you have no idea what your after. The pdf has no cross reference linking (metaphorically: Tape), and scrolling 660 pages can be a mission. Good book tho... seems to have everything. Steve. Some printer drivers allow you to put multiple pages onto a single sheet. Combined with duplex printng, it can be a real paper saver. So do some linux's when they have mpage installed ;) Print the pdf to postscript, or download a postscript version if it exists and then morph the rute document to your fancy. Some of the options might take a little figuring out but the basics are pretty straight forward. My favourite has to be squeezing 8 pages per sheet and then printing every second page, then every other second page with the pages back in the printer. Probably only cost a couple of dollars for printing out the whole lot then - dont forget to budget for a magnifying glass tho! Sascha
Re: PDF?
Yeah - I did 4-up printing with double siding, and bound the resulting stack. In all, 75-odd sheets of paper. And it has actually been taken out of the library about three times. Change to that directory and type: make xconfig Work through it. And as it's my first kernel compile, I'll select no when I'm asked about support for modules. Ook, I have configured to add in ntfs and vfat filesystem in the config, then I thought I could use bzDisk (I think) to make a boot disk first, that didn't work. Once my computer rebooted and tries to load from the disk it says: Loading. then reset the computer again! And it just keeps going in cycles. I haven't had time to use make bzImage yet but can someone tell me what to do with the compiled file once I've compiled it? The kernel document only describes what to do if I have lilo but I have GRUB (for multi booting system) and am booting off the mbr. Cheers, Hansen
Printing the Rute manual
I made enquiries with the Digital Print Centre on Victoria street just now. Based on 660 pages printed 2 up on both sides (ie the pages end up A5 size) the cost to print and bind with spiral binding is roughly: printing: $40.50 binding : $5.40 trimming: 3.75 Total : $49.65 They would print onto a4 and then cut it in half and bind it. This is also contingent on there not being too much black on the pages. This price is for 1-4 copies, so if we got a lot done it would be less, but he was a bit vague about that. It could be worth getting an order together. This is cheaper then getting it from Amazon $30 US plus (say) $15 US postage, double it to NZ$ = $90. The cheapest large commercial offerings on linux are over $100 in Whitcoulls. Thoughts -- Nick Rout [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Printing the Rute manual
What sort of binding is that? At 330 leaves (is that the correct term?) thick which is nearly a ream (500), my experience with that plastic binding at that thickness is not very good. - Original Message - From: Nick Rout [EMAIL PROTECTED] I made enquiries with the Digital Print Centre on Victoria street just now. Kylix 3
For those C/C++ Developers out there, especially those who HAVE to do M$ Windoze apps (for employers) BUT want to make them into Linux Apps the time is near that you will be able to prove that Linux is viable. Borland is releasing Kylix 3 which is a nice GUI RAD for BOTH Delphi and C++ The source is portable between Kylix 3 and Borland Delphi and C++ Builder 6. Three versions will be avaliable Enterprise... the expensive one with ALL you need + more - US$1999 Professional... missing some web and database things in above - US$249 Open Edition... My favorite.. Code generated must be GNU/GPL - FREE I will be downloading the Open Edition as soon as it is avaliable for download (Hopefully in the next couple of days) and will have a good play with it... and let you know how it goes.
