Re: compiling a module for a different kernel version

2002-07-30 Thread Chris Hellyar

One way is to: (I imagine there's a quicker/easier way)

You'll have to download the entire source tree for the kernel, and do a
'./configure' (and pick the right things...) and then a 'make modules'.

Assuming you're using the same glibc gcc version it'll all work when you
copy the module across...

YMMV though, I did this for pwc.o for a 2.4.3, compiled it on a 2.4.9
machine, with the same glibc and gcc, you've probably got more version
issues than I had. (pwc.o is the Philips webcam driver, and 2.4.3 didn't
have it, but the target machine didn't have enough disk space for the kernel
source tree)

Good luck :-).

Cheers, Chris H.

Subject: compiling a module for a different kernel version

Can anyone tell me how to compile a kernel module for a kernel thats not
on the development machine. This module is NOT in the standard kernel,
it is a third party job. I need it compiled for 2.2.21rc1 for my ipcop
firewall. ipcop does not have development tools on board and all my
 other machines are 2.4 based.

Can I download the kernel headers for 2.2.21rc1 and then compile on a
 2.4 machine?

MYSQL HTML OUTPUT

2002-07-30 Thread Barry

The html2ps utility works fine but does not interpret php code, it does
not run via apache.

To extract table data I must run mysql in batch mode ie *mysql -H
batchfile *.html' from the command line. This will output in html
table format but with only one line per row.

What I am getting is:-

TRTD
field 1
/TD/TR this line should be /TDTD
TRTDmaking this line redundant
field2
/TD/TR
field1
/TD/TR
etc

What do I do to get a multi column table correctly described in the
output file?

can anyone help please

Attempting to set up Debian 3.0 on a dell 3800 laptop

2002-07-30 Thread Ronald Highet

I have just installed Debian 3.0 on my Dell Inspiron 3800 laptop,
and like any good Debian install I seem to be having a few problems

First of all the base system seems to run fine Gnome and KDE
both look great. However if I swap from X to a full screen console (ctrl alt f1).
I am unable to read anything and the screen goes mad, (a sort of hazy mess of
randomly colored and moving lines all over the screen).

Secondly the laptop has a PCMCIA network card a Belkin
cardbus 10/100 network card to be exact.

It is a reasonably pricey card and on the Belkin site under
the card info it says that is supported by linux.

When I run cardmgr I can see that the card is in the slot
and correctly identified as a cardbus network card however when I edited the
file that stores info on network devices it keeps telling me that the device is
unreachable.

I am relatively new to linux so if I have made a silly
mistake I will not be surprised.

Any help on either of the problems would be greatly
appreciated.

Why not run your php script from the cmd line and pipe
it to htmltops? that way you can control the formatting

The company that makes it has an amusing name,

Can you ping external ip addresses (as opposed to host names that you
need to resolve to ip addresses)?

ie does ping 203.96.152.4 work whereas ping rachel.paradise.net.nz
doesn't?

If so it is a likely a dns problem.

And is this from the gateway or a client?

Especial mention goes to Nick Rout for the install, 'the travelling
Irishman' at Installfest for some tricky PCTel modem modules, Mahesh Nick
for CD supply etc., Zane for his sheer hard work, the knowledgeable Keith
McGavin for a day's setup tuning last week. Most of my available time
since platform gain has been spent keeping up with the CLUG post reading
RUTE online. It looks all good to me!A brand-newbie's $0.02 worth?

Win2K was looking good, but now I've seen *real* computing. That is, the idea
that programming access and learning is important, and a stable desktop is not
too much to ask (e.g. a common old Genius.Netscroll+ mouse can crash Win2K,
while Mandrake didn't even need an extra driver source and hums along without a
glitch).Full migration to the new system depends upon my Ethernet card
coming back to life (we set it for the LAN @Installfest, and I think a now
incorrect proxy setting lurks somewhere). Will persevere ask for
help if no luck in finding it.

The other thing that could be causing you problems...

Whats your routing table look like? run route after
connecting to your isp and see if theres a default
route out via your ppp interface, there will be one
to an ip at your isp and you should be able to ping
that, but if you don't have a default one that gets
created after dialing up you won't be able to do any
dns resolves or reach anything but the other end of
the ppp link.

To examin the set-up of your partitions you use the fdisk utility in

Be sure to append the -l to the fdisk command, or you will have fdisk in

What happens on your machine if you do that?

You will then have to mount the partitions to which you wish to have
access.
Once again here is the mount command and its output on my machine:

As you can see from the above mount list I have two disks which are not
in the normal run of things, namely:

/dev/hda1 on /mnt/disk1 type ext2 (rw)
/dev/hdc1 on /mnt/disk2 type ext2 (rw)

In order to do this I created two new directories in the /mnt directory:-

# mkdir /mnt/disk1
# mkdir /mnt/disk2

and then mounted the disks.

# mount -t ext2 /dev/hda1 /mnt/disk1
# mount -t ext2 /dev/hda2 /mnt/disk2

the '-t ext2' tells the mount command that it is to mount an ext2 type
of linux file-system,
you will need to substitute the correct flag for the types of
file-systems you wish to mount.

you should have access to the file-systems now. See:-

debian/ Mandrake/ OpenOffice/ slackware/ VALinux/

Re: mail sort delema

2002-07-30 Thread V K

I have a mail folder with 5000 messages in it many of which are repeated
i.e. 10-20 copies of the same message from an occasion when my mail
 system got truly arsed up.

Does anyone think it's feasible to come up with a script (procmail I
would guess) to sort the folder and delete the duplicates ???

Yes, procmail. There are duplicate-removal recipes all over the show.
They all work the same: stick the msg-ID into a cashe (with formail),
check for each msg whether its id is in the cache. Make the cache big
enough yada yada

Earlier .iso versions available from:-

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/redmondlinux/redmond/iso/

Looks like a competitor to Lindows, very XP'ish,
would be a good environment for people who could
never grok linux and just wanted to do stuff, rather
than spend hours setting things up.

The company that makes it has an amusing name,
Redmond Linux Corp. I wonder if it's a dig or
something more sinister ;-)

An effective way to get cheap publicity by getting Microsoft to get out
their legal swords and then
caving in meekly. They used to call the distribution RedmondLinux, iirc.
