Linux streaks back into the lead...
Hi I had a hard drive failure on Friday and seeing as the drive that failed was the on that held my OS(es), I thought I would give the amd64 version of Ubuntu, Gusty a try. Very impressive. Easy to install Nvidia drivers, the non free repository includes a flash plugin that works in the 64 bit version. 3d desktop without the strangeness that I experienced with Feisty. This is the first 64 bit desktop I would recommend to novices. I appreciate the performance that comes with 64 bit as well! Maybe it will take some time before I bother reinstalling some of the other OSes I lost... Regards Graeme Kiyoto-Ward
Re: Trouble ticket and asset tracking
We've been using request-tracker at work for our IS helpdesk for a couple of years... http://bestpractical.com/rt There is also an asset tracking add-on for it, http://atwiki.chaka.net/ (Although the site is broken, just a link to the install archive on there at the moment) We've had over 5000 tickets through this in the last 2 years or so, with 5 I.S staff using it, and 180 users on the LAN, plus casuals etc. We use the email gateway primarily to log jobs. Email the helpdesk to log a job. Just moved it to version 3.6.1 on etch yesterday as it happens, using the packages from the debian repository. Cheers, Me. Re: Would knoppmyth be useful in the St Albans archive
I'm still a good 8-12 months away from buying the bits to assemble a myth box, but when I do I'll need something like this. I imagine there will be a newer version by then. I just downloaded the .iso and could provide a copy. knoppmyth is a one cd install cd for MythTV, and also works as a live cd mythtv frontend.
Re: MythTV and an appropriate card
we have a PVR with mythdora on it we looked around and the hauppauge pvr 150 works and is relatively cheap although we don't use it for recording mainly just for the remote On 10/22/07, Andy George [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Recently, I decided that Windows Media Center being in charge of my PVR had much in common with a Diesel Mechanic being in charge of my dental hygiene, so embarked upon what can only be described as the biggest brain tumour in the known universe. Is there a recommended tuner card for Myth TV, or is this going to end up a very expensive exercise in Hit Vs Miss, until I stumble across something that works? Your thoughts? If you want analogue TV the Hauppauge PVR150 (with or without the MCE tag is the one to get for mythtv. It is well supported in linux. If you want digital TV, are happy with the channels on freeview and have a suitable dish (a sky one is perfect, its the same satellite) then a Skystar 2 is the card to use. http://www.mantisbt.org/ It's used on one of the systems I use. HTH Cheers Don Ps: You should unset your 'return address' when sending to lists. That way responses go to the list so other people who are interested in the response get them as well :) Andrew Sands wrote: Howdy, I need to implement a fault based trouble ticket and asset tracking system of some kind. Google has not been much of a friend and Freshmeat only gave me a selection that were mostly help-desked based. Any solution I implement needs to track the asset reported as broken \ faulty \ or malfunctioning, these devices may be non IT devices but part of the bigger picture. Keeping on topic, my preference is to use an open source solution. This is driven by produce proof-of-concept assists work-flow vs cost of license fees arguement. Any reports or war stories of what people have used or are using most welcome.
