Re: laptop recommendations

2008-01-04 Thread Sue
I have tried several distros on my ASUS with no problems except the
inbuilt camera. Ubuntu doesn't like booting with my USB hub but
generally gets there second time around.

I love it and would buy ASUS again if I was upgrading.

GIS and GPS? I suspect, running on top of Windows and in a virtual machine, a
mere 516MB isn't going to cut it. Get at least 1GB - GIS is in that specialized

If you don't have a serial port you can use a USB/Serial adapter. Most of
them work with Linux. For connecting up a (Garmin) GPS, if you don't
already have the cable you could ask Bruce Whitfield in Sumner for one:

Do you have the GPS receiver already?

If buying on Trademe, that might be a bit awkward.. Ask the seller a
question first to check they are OK with the 'must boot knoppix' idea.

A a question for Dave G, what sort of spec are you looking for? I've
got an old 486 laptop that runs DSL (barely) you can have for well under
$1k. :-).

Thanks for the replies,

I had been looking at the D600s but was put off by the Broadcom wifi,
the D600s all appear to be ATI?. And I was planning to install either
Debian Etch or Ubuntu 7.10, so that's encouraging

Re: laptop recommendations

2008-01-04 Thread Christopher Sawtell
I found the T40 I had to be somewhat fragile.
The lid cracked near the hinge on the LH side.
The lid of the PCMCIA slot fell off.

I'd recommend buying from a retailer because you get a guarantee.
Computer Future / Computer Broker, cnr Gasson St. and Washington Way,
replaced the T41 with which I replaced the above T40 no questions asked
on the last day of the three month guarantee period. I was impressed.

ThinkPads generally run Linux pretty well.
Try to avoid one with an ATI video system.
Intel video is available on some thinkpads.

Insist on seeing it boot either a SystemRescueCD or Knoppix
before parting with your hard won cash if buying privately.

Dell D600s should be around $350+ on TradeMe, and work well with
Ubuntu, including the non-free Broadcom wifi ...

Yay! I had a drive fail!

2008-01-04 Thread Chris Hellyar
I thought I'd share my geekish joy.

A drive in one of the servers on my network at home has failed, and it
sent me a nice email, I feel very wanted, and somehow gratified. :-).

Oh, and it's nice to know that mdadm does it's job properly, this is the
first time I've had a mdadm array fail for real, normally it's because I
unplugged a drive to test it!

Cheers, Me.
