Re: can't change desktop wallpaper

2008-02-04 Thread Nick Rout
I guess you could add bits of the old file back in until it breaks,
otherwise just put it down to an eternal mystery in the kde devlopers'
minds :-)

Which reminds me... I've got a copy of CentOS 5.1 for i386 and x86_64 sitting
on my desk...

Re: can't change desktop wallpaper

2008-02-04 Thread Roger Searle
Having backed up the kdesktoprc file as suggested and logging out/in, a
file with just a [Version] section is created. On using dcop or the
System Settings -> Desktop gui to change the wallpapers, the relevant
[Desktop] sections are created. YES!! I can now change the wallpapers
independently via the GUI . . .

So, what were the offending sections? I haven't had time to go through
it properly, but it looks like the 4 DrawBackgroundPerScreen_ lines now
being false and perhaps the [Desktop0Screen0] & [Desktop1Screen0]
sections no longer present stand out as probabilities, anyone who is
interested may feel like scrolling through the output of "diff
new_kdesktoprc_file old_kdesktoprc_file" and may be able to confirm or
elaborate:

Thanks for everyone's input, I can now put this in the "solved" file.

Cheers,
Roger

Sometimes the format of kde config files change subtly between versions.

I would try renaming ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc (ie backing it up)
and then restarting kde to see if a new file is created in a format
consistent with the current kde version.

I have to admit though that I am guessing here...

But anyway it can't do any harm to try, as you can always put back the
existing file :-)

Re: can't change desktop wallpaper

2008-02-04 Thread Roger Searle
I'd bring the box along next week were I not on leave for 3 weeks at the
end of this week. Unfortunately I've been rather busy having to
ummm... well, work - and that has been interfering with following up on
this.

So: yes I can alter the wallpaper via a

dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface setWallpaper filename 1

so that's progress though I haven't had a chance to figure out what this
says for the underlying cause of the symptoms I had observed. I need to
explore some of the options with this command when I get a chance.
However I have observed so far that this always sets the wallpaper on
all 4 desktops regardless of which desktop number I choose in the dcop
command. It always writes the changed wallpaper file name to the
[Desktop0Screen0] section of kdesktoprc. So I tried changing true to
false in the following:

[Background Common]
CommonDesktop=false
CommonScreen=false
and this has not resulted in being able to set different wallpapers, but
as I said I need to understand the dcop command a bit better rather than
guessing as I did here. I'll be reading the man page during my next
coffee break.

Interesting to note the various desktop sections in the kdesktoprc file
though: I have [Desktop0] [Desktop1] [Desktop2] [Desktop3] as well as
[Desktop0Screen0] and [Desktop1Screen0] which stands out as something
worth investigating as to whether this is normal or is evidence of
something becoming screwed up at some point and a source of the problem?

I'll do my best to follow up with this and any other comments that may
now result during the rest of the week.

Cheers,
Roger

This is one of those "enigma hiding in a conundrum" type problems.
I just don't understand it at all, and it has piqued my curiosity.

Are there any other odd and inexplicable behaviours?
Next in the plan, I'd do a full fsck on the file system using a rescue CD.

Would you be able to bring said recalcitrant machine into the evening
meeting on the 12th?
That's Tuesday next week.

The other possibility is tomorrow afternoon because I will installing
a couple of distributions into the CLUG archive of Linux distributions
then. Please drop me an off list e-mail or 'phone call to make
definite appointment time.

Well I already made a suggestion that you ignored.

compare the contents of ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc before and

after

you try to change the background.

The easiest way to do this is probably to make a backup:

mv ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc~

use the gui to make the change and then:

diff ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc~ ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc

If the difference is carried into the file, then its not a permissions
file, its something else.

Also you could try to change the background programmatically like

this:

dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface setWallpaper filename 1

where filename is the name of the file you want to use as wallpaper.

See

if it gives any error.

If it doesn't work or give any useful errors then try runnig it with
strace. (see the recent thread started by John Carter).

So I have write access there. I did find an invalid reference to one
