modem woes
Hi Folks, I recently did a new install of Mandriva 2008.0 on a spare partition. No problems to speak of with the installation but the modem is a different story. The current score is 'no modem = useless installation.' Its a winmodem has been running for 4 yrs and is fine with Mandriva 2007.1. The src driver is martian-full-20061203( the latest), an update of what I have been using. It compiles and installs with no error msgs. Then I run depmod -a = no msgs Running 'modprobe martian_dev' gives the following FATAL: Error inserting martian_dev /lib/modules/2.6.22.9-desktop-1mdv/other/martian_dev.ko): Invalid module format. I have checked and appear to have the correct kernel sources installed. Copying files from the earlier compile does not work. Google has not helped. After 3 days I have run out of ideas, any suggestions please Barry

You can by external (cr*p, these days) modems for $65+GST or thereabouts. For data connections they always work (just don't expect phone stuff to go, it doesn't). I am currently tracking options for internal modems, but it will involve using a soldering iron (and be definitely in excess of $100). There is a PCI card modem, real stuff, which is guaranteed to work with Linux and hylafax, for US$80+pp. http://shop.ifax.com/multimodemzpx-pciunv-datafax-p-83.html?osCsid=23u6mri95odcjfqmtl1p2s3q31 You get what you pay for. If you prefer to pay in time rather than money, getting the lucent driver to compile and go for your kernel is the only way to go. Note the ltmodem driver is succeeded by the martian driver. I got martian-full-20071011.tar.gz to go in Oct with kernel 2.6.18 and it worked (as far as the martian driver and chipset can be called working). Re: modem woes
Alternative ideas. 1) Go for a Telstra cable connection, which starts off at $64.90 per month. That's $17 per month more than dial-up. For full deatails see:- http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/residential/inhome/packages/ That'll be a plug-in and go solution. Judging by all the hi-jack and break-in attempts my firewall logs record, imho it would be a _very_ good idea to get a firewall of some kind set up. pfSense or IPCop are both popular and effective. IPCop is an absolute doddle to set up, but wiser minds than I suggest that pfSense is the better option. It's impossible to over emphasize this point. 2) Apply more hours to getting the modem to go. Get the scanModem query and diagnostic script from the hugely informative site: http://www.linmodems.org/ perruse and cogitate on the info therein. Then download http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/packages/scanModem.gz Gunzip it and run the script for a very full report on your modem. Just do exactly as it tells you. Note that you should be sure to compile your kernel and the lose-modem s/w on the same machine using the same compiler etc. Others may disagree but I have found that to be necessary on so many occasions, I now suggest it as a matter of course. I believe this is the reason for the invalid format message you are getting, Be sure to configure your kernel correctly before compiling. 3) I know that you may consider the following idea to be blasphemous, but you might care to have a play with the Hardy Heron. I downloaded both the KDE and GNOME versions this morning, You'd be very welcome to copies. What does dmesg say after this happens. The error message from modprobe/insmod can be misleading as to the reason the module load fails -- Eliot
