A long story
I have my cousins computer here, it is meant to run winXP home addition. Theres some strange things going on with it : Cant get into Outlook Express because it keeps asking for an idenity, but it wont allow you to create one. Trying to install winzip but the best that I can get is having to re-install it over and over. Setting desktop icons makes no difference (nothing changes). So here is the *nix question : I tried running Damn Small Linux live cd and it immediately comes up with an error : Only one processor found. I find much of what Linux based OS's do kinda back the front, so is it actually reporting an error because if it is it would explain much of the problems with the comp. Thanks guys
Re: A long story
Can I use Knoppix to find any hardware prolems ?? I have a copy here. My thoughts were that (as he purchased this thing from Smiths City Market) thats its just a pretty crappy computer with an even worse OS install. Problem is that he had it for quite some time then started having problems with it, from what I can figure he had a mountain of viruses, dialers etc. After taking it in for repairs the OS came back completely useless, unfortunitely he thought it was his lack of knowledge and didn't realise the OS wasn't working, at least 12mths have now past. I just dont want to install another OS if its a hardware problem. If its hardware I would rather go to war with Smiths. Regards Kelvyn.

Re: update on dying disk
Wesley could you keep me updated on your rescue efforts please. My ladys hd dropped dead (fatal error message, she is using windows), but I now need to salvage as much as is possible. Naturally nothing was backed up, then again, nothing is real important, it would just be nice to save whatever I can. Regards Kelvyn
oops
Sorry for my absents pre and post xmas guys, I do appreciate all the help I have had in the past . A serious family matter had taken any spare time I had available. I hope to be at next mths meeting. Regards Kelvyn
Re: update on dying disk
Deleted all the emails with MailWasher when I meant to reply to them individually. Anyways, thanks every one. Dave, cant do any thing for at least a week, appreciate the offer for today. Regards Kelvyn
Re: update on dying disk
I try and dump the contents I was thinking of putting the hd into my mandrake box connected to the cd strap and seeing if I could access it from there. If thats stupid please just say so as kindly as is possible ;) If nothing else, does that give us any other possibilities I do have a Knoppix.cd Regards Kelvyn
Re: configure shortcut(To Christopher Sawtell)
Mandrivel I take it that wasn't a spelling mistake, but an attitude toward Mandrake (LOL). Regards Kelvyn
configure shortcut
I have a shortcut icon (CD-ROM device) on my desktop. Clicking on it gets me: /home/kelvyn/desktop/cd-rom device is of type FS-Device but has no dev= entry Thats all very nice, but how do I fix it so that it works. OR Is it better to run it from the command prompt, xconsole, whatever you want to call it. And.. Chris, I'm logged in as root (whoami), but havent had time this evening to go any further, been playing with other things. Thankyou Regards Kelvyn.
Re: My screw up
Tried to do things the Ross way: http://lists.ethernal.org/cantlug-0505/msg00255.html but I couldnt get things to happen for me. Then tried the Edwin way: ** System - Configuration - KDE - System - Login Manager You'll be asked for your root password. Click on the User tab, and then untick root in the Hidden Users box. Logout, and voila! you should have root on the login screen. ** Cheers Edwin, that worked a treat. Now its back to the post by Ross to see what I can do. Regards Kelvyn
Re: My screw up
From Nick: Please don't log in to X as root. It is a bad practice. Take the earlier advice and use an xterm in kelvyn's login and use su to become root. Nick I tried that and I do believe I followed the advice to the 'T', but I still couldnt open half of the directories. What I will do, if it is s bad, is go back to the link Ross gave and post my problems from there. I do not fear working as root, I'm not going to delete anything, and all I'm changing is httpd.conf, possibly my php.ini later, but its only the php, apache, mysql stuff I need access to. Best to learn the correct way of doing things, I guess. Regards Kelvyn.
Thanks all
Thanks to everyone last night, its great to have my box up and running so I can now start learning all that needs to be learnt. Special thanks to Wesley, Ross, Nick, Chris, and Steve for the loan of the cdrom drive. Much appreciated Regards Kelvyn.
My screw up
I must be suffering from a short memory. When I boot up I get automatically logged in and end up at my desktop, logged in as Kelvyn. How do I log in from there as Root, because I cant get access to half my files. I tried opening the terminal and logging in there as Root, but that didnt do it. Theres going to be a bunch of questions coming tonite. Thanks Regards Kelvyn.
Re: My screw up
CtrlAltBackspace will take you back to the login screen Nice try, but.. No it doesn't. It just auto logs me in again as Kelvyn. Ross logged me in as root from the desktop last nite, because we went into the httpd.conf file which I have to be logged in as root to get at. I was having so much fun and seeing that many different things last nite, I just couldn't retain it all. Regards Kelvyn
Re: From the beginning (andy)
It has to be done. Need to get a firewall up and my web server, plus a mail server. Then I need to figure out how to network all these things so that I can still have 3 windows boxes on the net also. I'm guessing my life is going to be stink for awhile from this point. BTW, I have a great php book over here (forgot all about it) that I could lend/drop off for you, if you like. Perhaps then you could talk rover parts with me for a bit. Cheers Regards Kelvyn.
Re: From the beginning
Andy, did you install: MYSQL-client, and MYSQL-common, and php-mysql-4.3.4-1mdk to get mysql up and running with php support ?? Or dont I need php-mysql-4.3.4-1mdk My install on windows was much easier than this ! Give me your address and I'll drop the book off tomorrow sometime (12-1pm) if thats ok. Regards Kelvyn

On windows you have an htdocs folder which is where you place your files to be served up by apache. So which folder is it here: var/www var/www/html var/www/web I'm wanting to test out ?php phpinfo ? Thanks Regards Kelvyn.

Re: From the beginning
Is there a simple way to check if my cdrom is reading my cd's. I cant get over this, the problems just keep on coming. Regards Kelvyn
Re: From the beginning
var/www/html I thought I was the only one this retarded (no insult intented), god you have made me feel better.
was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
lets try this a different way: how can I find the path to my cdrom ?? I have tried several suggestions from previous posts although I must admit to not understanding what the - is actually meant to be in (instructions from Ross Drummond): /dev/hdc - ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd I get. no such file or directory, with: mount /dev/cdrom
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
Thought you meant: man mount/dev/cdrom which did nothing. man mount brings up everything on mount. Gives a discription of file tree on unix systems etc,etc
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
Not sure how much you need, and its a 12 ft walk from one comp to the other, but heres the guts, I'll post all of it if you need it (thanks for your help) /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/partl on / type ext3 (rw) then a bunch of : none on then: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 on /home type ext3 (rw) then: none on /mnt/floppy/etc,etc I see nothing about cdrom anywhere, and I couldnt figure out how to get out of the man mount results so had to start again.
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
You will have to excuse me if I'm slow on this. Again I dont know how much detail you need: dmesg|grep hd gives a heap of stuff on hda then Resume Machine: resuming from hda5 then theres a mention of hda6 dmesg|grep -i cd gives: grep: cd: no such file or directory I see nothing that would point toward the cdrom.
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
Dont shoot me ! I am logged in as root (that ok ?). So far nothing suggested has worked. By that I mean I still cant get to, or use my cdrom.
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
is it on the ide bus good question I'm no computer guru, but the cdrom appears to plugged into the motherboard with a separate strap to the hd. I did notice that the sound had a X on the speaker icon, and the sound cable is now flopping around in the case. The cdrom was used to install this current version of Mandrake. Sometime after the install the draw decided it didnt want to open, but I fixed that. Hope that helps PS I have my hammer handy ;)
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
I installed another cd drive and still the same thing. I then took the cable from my hd with the mandrake install and connected it to the second hd, which I have never used, so I was guessing it was empty. Then I inserted a boot disk (floppy) for mandrake 10, this then comes up with a pop up box and an error no cdrom device found Hit Enter and it then says Please insert the additional drivers floppy I'm beginning to think there is something real strange going on, I installed Apache, php, and MySql when I did the initial install, Apache and php are there, but no mysql or cd drive. About the only thing I can think of is that I had winXP installed previously and it was using the drivers from there, I dont see how that would add up, but what else is there. From this point I am open to any/all suggestions. This is only an old P3 box, so its not really worth much, but I dont really want to give it the biff either. Its my learn linux box, before I move on to killing my server and firewall, and it was eventually going to be my mail server. Its 5am so I'm going to bed. Regards Kelvyn.
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
ls -l /dev/cd*[1] comes up with 'no such file or directory'
Re: was: From the beginning now:find cdrom
Correction ls -l /dev/cd* comes back with: ls: invalid option without the space ls-l /dev/cd* No such file or directory And just to cover my butt I tried: ls -l /dev/cd*[1] No such file or directory As I wasn't 100% sure you didnt want me to include [1]
now:find cdrom (Attn: Steve Holdoway)
I'm sorry I forgot to reply to your email. I assume that each is a separate command: mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdc /mnt mount -t iso9660 -o ro /dev/hdd /mnt df First 2 return info on using mount, the only thing about cdrom is: A device can be given a name /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom df returns: file: /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 SIZEUSED AVAILABLE USED%MOUNTED ON 5.4G 1.7G 3.5G 33% / /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 SIZEUSED AVAILABLE USED%MOUNTED ON 3.4G 36M3.3G 2% /home Thanks for your time Regards Kelvyn
Re: now:find cdrom (Attn: Steve Holdoway)
You cannot use the cd for anything, its just not there as far as the comp is concerned. The cdrom worked fine, but I neglected my studies and left it sitting in the corner for a couple of mths after installing mandrake. When I finally got back to it the draw wouldnt open. I removed it and replaced it with an old one, but that didnt work at all. A few days later I got back to it and re-inserted the original and the draw decided to open, but now the comp cant see it. I'm beginning to think my ladys brother has done something to it, but I cant remember him being around at the time, and I dare not ask as thats like accusing Jesus of spitting on the sidewalk. Are you running the kernel plus modules as supplied by the distributor, or is this a kernel you have compiled yourself? Are you kidding ! I'm still trying to figure out what you guys are talking about. If I couldnt install it with the original install then it just wasn't going to happen. The CDROM drive I have in the machine now is an old one (pre computer age, its closer to a record turn table). Its an old creative thing, I called it junk until last night. The one that was in the comp looks like the original, or it did till last night, it now doesn't have a front. Power is connected. I replaced and re-replaced the ribbon cable. I have tried booting from a win98 boot disk. And now I'm about to crash test it by dropping it from the top of the cathedral. After that I'm taking it for swimming lessons. Am I frustrated, no, but I will be if it floats. Yep, I would definitely appreciate some help. This is the only comp I have to learn on. And, while on the subject of help, thankyou to all that have done their best with this matter. Thanks again Chris. Regards Kelvyn.
Re: now:find cdrom (Attn: Steve Holdoway)
I'm not worried about color, does it float ? And wheres the CBD. And. Thanks for the offer. Regards Kelvyn
Re: now:find cdrom (Attn: Steve Holdoway)
Grey is fine. I could probably pick it up as I think I know where Latimer Sq is. I think I did the plastering on the wall corner of Latimer and Gloucester if I remember correctly. Regards Kelvyn.
From the beginning
Its been some time since I played with my Mandrake box due to other obligations, so I have forgotten almost everything. I originally installed Mandrake 10.1 and at time of installation selected to install apache, mysql and I'm not sure if there was an option to install php. At this point I thought I had actually installed the above, but with the help of this group I believe we have established that the above is not installed. I have now gone to: Start -- System -- Configuration --System -- Services It would appear that I have apache installed and running at startup, but no mysql installed, but for some reason I have postgresql, although it is not running, and I never selected it at installation. It would appear that I need MYSQL-client, and MYSQL-common, but what do I need to install php ?? php-mysql-4.3.4-1mdk Will that install php ?? Hope I have explained myself clear enough for you all to understand what it is I require. Please, if its not clear, just ask. Regards Kelvyn.
Ross
No probs with localhost (127.0.0.1). But I now need to install mysql and php. BTW, my Mandrake box is not on the net, so I'm installing from disk. Regards Kelvyn
Re: [OT] PHP Online tutorials
Your more than welcome to send your questions this way Andy. I cant promise anything as I hand code everything. I dont use mysqladmin, but I do use mysql, apache, php. I prefer to build everything in scripts, so I dont need/want/use mysqladmin. I think we live just around the corner from each other so you are more than welcome to drop over any time and check out anything. I have a large collection of scripts your welcome to play with. Re: mount cd-rom, was : Wheres my mysql
I finally have my tray on my cdrom opening and closing again, great what you can get do with a hammer. From Ross Drummond: * Go to; Start -- System -- Confieration -- Packaging -- Install Software. After prompting for a root password rpmdrake the software installer program will open Enter mysql in the find box and click the search button. A list of mysql applications will appear. Check the box next to the particular application you wish to install and click on the install button. The installer will prompt you to insert the appropriate cdrom. The installer prompts with: Please insert the medium named Instruction CD (x86) on device [/dev/hdc] QUESTIONS: I am assuming that its asking for my original Mandrake 10.1 CD's ? If so, I have tried all 3 and all I get is the prompt coming back, any ideas please. I will point out again that I cannot get to my cdrom from my desktop icon, Ross said it was probably not mounted. I dont know if that makes any difference or not. Thanks again. Regards Kelvyn
Saving a file
I'm lost on learning this linux !! I'm trying to save a file (info.php) in : /var/www/html Each time I try to save it I get a pop-up saying that the file could not be saved, make sure I have write access and/or theres enough disk space. I have "NO" idea if I have write access although I cant see why not, all I can say is that I can save it to the desk top, and this linux is real frustrating. When I first installed mandrake 10.1 I set it up to automatically log me in, is there any way I can set this thing up so that I have access to everything ? Even logged in as "su" I cant do anything, I only want to see if php/apacheis working Regards Kelvyn
RE: Saving a file
Ok, I know apache is working. I put http://localhost/platform into the address bar and up pops a pretty page. Now all I need to know is "howdo I get my work into the folder "html" Thanks, Kelvyn
Re: Saving a file
The best thing to do is to start Konqueror as root and then right click on the directory and look at its permissions. Konqueror as root . I do believe I'm logged in as Kelvyn, so I'm currently in home/kelvyn. How do I start Konqueror as root please Yes I'm a newbie Regards Kelvyn
Re: Saving a file
Try chown your username /var/www/html or chmod a+w /var/www/html. What are you saying here ?? Bring up a console, log in as root , chmod a+w /var/www/html. I'm very sorry, but I think your answer took it for granted I knew something, I claim to know nothing so I need exact instructions from beginning to end. Appreciate your time and help. Regards Kelvyn
Re: Saving a file
man chmod, man passwd, man group Just like reading the apache docs Grrr ! Why is it that all these things are written for those that already know the answer. I need to do a degree in computer engineering just to read the instructions. I'm logged in as root, I guess thats something. I'm reading up on man chmod All this just to get a php file into a folder.

Re: Saving a file
1. At a command prompt su mkdir /var/www/kelvin chown kelvin /var/www/kelvin OK, I change it a little. mkdir /var/www/web chown kelvin /var/www/web Open up a browser: http://localhost/web/info.php REQUESTED URL NOT FOUND ON THE SERVER. Any ideas, anyone And thanks all
Re: Saving a file
This works: chown kelvin /var/www/html Open up a browser: http://localhost/info.php I'm guessing by the replies I recieved that its not the best way to do things, but it does work. Sorry it took so long to click onto what was being said, guess I'm a bit slow. If anyone would like to tell me why it doesn't work this way: mkdir /var/www/web chown kelvin /var/www/web Open up a browser: http://localhost/web/info.php I would be interested. Regards Kelvyn
thanks
Thanks Robert, Christopher, Andrew, Steve, Jason, Roger, Vic and anyone I may have missed. I appreciate you all jumping in and helping out. Regards Kelvyn
Re: Saving a file
Are you sure you copied info.php into /var/www/html/web/ ? No, inside my www directory I have a directory html and another web, there is no web directory inside my html directory. I think apache is directed to look inside html, so you are correct, I should have created a folder (directory) inside the html directory, or if I could figure this box out I could just change my httpd.conf file to point to the directory I want to use. But, thats a big if and I'll be so rapped when I can find my way around inside this thing. Regards Kelvyn
mount cd-rom, was : Wheres my mysql
I used: rpm -ql mysql | less It returned : Package mysql not installed. How do I check if the package is on the machine, I think I can install it if its there somewhere. I realise that my thoughts at this point and time are probably of little value, but I really think a mailserver and forum would be a good use. Seems Dave doesn't want it on his dialup connection (cant see why not) , I will offer my cable connection 24/7 and I would be prepared to pay for a domain name for a forum if needed in exchange for getting to watch everything being set up and some lessons along the way. I really think a forum would be of great value and great for referencing old posts, especially for some-one like myself (a newbie). I would also need some help setting up a firewall/network. Dave Lilley is todays hero
Many thanks to Dave Lilley. I now have an up and running Mandrake 10 box. A special thanks also goes out to Andy and Warwick for their contribution, good to meet all you guys. And thanks ALL for putting up with my newbie approach, endless emails, not following instructions that I did my best with, and generally being a dumb-ass. It was great to be able to open my email account and find so many people prepared to offer assistance. You all make this a great group. For those that want/need to know, I'm not sure if it was the way I configured the graphics driver or the phillips 105E monitor I was using as I have read endless posts on people having trouble with their drivers. After plugging in an old KTX and doing a fresh install Dave had me up and running in no time and gave me some great pointers. Now if I could only remember the passwords ( lol ). Again, thanks ALL.

It seems the problem is: [drm:drm-init] #error# cannot initialize the agppart module I've done a search (nothing in google) web-ferret gives me a mountain of listings but sadly I have no idea what they are on about or how to fix it. From what I have read it would appear that it is because it is trying to load things in an incorrect order. This can be fixed by making changes to a conf file but thats about all I understand. Nick, I'm sorry if I frustrated you. I thought I had followed your instructions which I thought were in 2 parts. Try this. if that works do this which I believed at the time I did. I thought I reported back an error. OR try this Problem is you ask me to do things I have NO idea how to do. I've only been playing with Linux for 24 hrs. If you are also coming from 24 hrs experience I guess I can understand your frustration at my ignorance, but if your experience goes beyond 24 hrs hows about you cut me some slack, remember I'm a newbie (5 yrs on a comp total) and give me clear instructions a newbie can follow. Please remember, I didn't even know what to do at the prompt. And I do sincerely appreciate you taking the time to help. I'm not trying to waste your time or mine, I want this thing running more than you do even if that is hard to believe at this point. And I do understand your frustration so...sincerely Thankyou. Regards Kelvyn.
Possible answer Re: Help Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
This link below seems to have a possible answer, but I have no idea how or what they are doing. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?threadid=171628 Regards Kelvyn
Re: agpgart problems
I never use google so my skillz are lacking there. My search was for [drm:drm-init]*error*Cannot initialize the agpgart module. Live and learn I guess, and it seems I'll be doing a lot of learning around here. Regards Kelvyn
Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
Kinda looks like I never set up my graphics server correctly. I'll try yet another install and see if I can get it right this time. Thanks for your help guys.

Robert Fisher wrote: If you are installing Mandrake, I suggest that you configure every option near the end of the installation procedure. It has been more reliable in my experience. I did,I did. But still no graphical login. I have a P3 (Gateway) with integrated graphics, I think its ATI Radeon but I'm not sure. Is there some way I can find out what my graphics card is, I'm no computer engineer. Also the monitor is an old Phillips that I just set to 800x600 @ 56Mhz does that sound about right. Nick Rout wrote: you do not need to do a reinstall to fix that! Way t late dude. If you want to keep up you'll have to stop going to be before 4am (LOL) But its your lucky day. You now have a second chance cos its happened again, same thing. FAILED no eth0 (I believe thats correct). Regards Kelvyn
Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
Oops, I forgot: Distro is Mandrake 10 I didn't know what graphics card I had so I just selected to use Xfree or something like that. Cant really remember without going through the install all over again.
Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
I have DamnSmallLinux and Knoppix I think ? I'll give them a go and get back. Regards Kelvyn
Help Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
I seem to remember trying DamnSmall Linux before and I didn't have this problem although I couldn't get it to any GUI. It says: You passed an undefined mode number press enter to see video modes available (did that) Video adaptor VESA VGA Mode: COLS and ROWS 0 0F00 80x25 1 0f01 80x50 2 0F02 80x43 3 0F03 80x28 4 0F05 80x30 5 0F06 80x34 6 0F07 80x60 enter mode number or, scan:
Re: Help Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
Well after trying DamnSmallLinux and feather and Mandrake I have finally decided that theres not much point in going any further until I can figure out how to set up the graphics card. None of the above can launch Xserver. I really dont understand this. If I can get graphics while these things install, why cant I get graphics after or half way through. Doesnt it have to be using the graphics card in the first place to give me a graphical installation. I would have thought Linux would have a default somewhere. Steve, I dont think Knoppix will make any difference, but you are more knowledgeable than I. So if you think it worth a try then I would appreciate a copy. Regards Kelvyn
Re: Help Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
This is logging in on Mandrake 10 $ startx Its either creating/writing/using: home/kelvyn/.XAuthority Then: exeve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 13) xinit: server error Then prompt again. ** I would like to say thanks to ALL those that have helped with this, I appreciate the time. * Regards Kelvyn (nothing like a challenge)
Re: Help Re: [kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
I used the same names and paswords al the way through the installation. Admin/root/user are all the same. So how do I log in as root ??? cd root enter ???
mount points
My first install. Due to low resources I'm doing a text install. Mandrake 10 Could some-one tell me what I am meant to put in where it says mount resources: hda1( 2 Gb, Journalised FS : ext 3)_ _ _ _ _ hda6(1.3 GB Journalised FS : ext 3)_ _ _ _ Thanks in advance. A special thanks to Warwick for burning the cd's for me in such a quick time, hope I can return the favour asap. Regards Kelvyn
Re: mount points
PS. You're not meant to install it correctly first time... none of us did (: I would be happy if I could just get close to screwing it up. Turns out, after wiping windows off of several hd's that the comp wasn't really up to the task (yes I erased everything off of all of them). Tried my P3 and found things went a lot better, but now it appears the hd is too small. I thought it was a 3G hd, but linux is telling me its only 700 mg. Next hard-drive 60G. On to attempt 70+ (well it feels like that). Do the linux people have no idea why the general public prefer windows (lol)? Regards Kelvyn
[kelvyn@localhost kelvyn]$
Ok, what am I meant to do at this prompt ? I really dont understand what it is trying to ask me. Going by the book I should have a pop-up asking for username/password then it brings up the desktop. I'm guessing I've done something wrong again but I'm getting closer each time. Regards Kelvyn.
Any cd's around please
I've just tried to install linux redhat 8 but there seems to be a file that cant be read on either my windows machine or the machine I'm trying to do the install on. I moved on to Mandrake, but after all the excitement of it looking like it was going to work, it stops at formatting with an error: no hdlists found. There were also prior errors but I just clicked continue. I've decided its probably best to get a good copy. Is there anyone that can give me a copy of redhat (exchange cd's, or whatever the deal is around here). Just when I thought things were going well. Regards Kelvyn

Robert Fisher wrote: I also have SuSE 9.1 and Mandrake 10. For a newbie I would recommend SuSE or Mandrake. Which version of Mandrake were you trying? Mandrake 8.1 I was kinda hoping to get something done asap. Once I start something I find it hard to move on until finished. I appreciate the offer for sunday. If I cant do anything before then I'll email you saturday nite. Regards Kelvyn
Good,simple book
I have been intersted in linux for quite some time, probably for about as long as I've had a computer (about 5yrs). I have been purchasing books : Red Hat Linux Server 6 Unix Made Easy MS-DOS 6.2 Database Management Systems DOS Power Tools etc,etc The point is (although I'm almost 50) I want to learn, but I've never been the smartest guy on the block so I need simple instructions. I'm trying not to make this a long email but please let me explain: When I first started with a computer I naturally wanted to learn html. Many tutorials started with open your favourite text editor. Immediately I was lost, whats a text editor?. Finally I found a tutorial that said if you dont know what a text editor is go to: start/programs/accessories/notepad. I don't need anything on the internet yet, but I do want to learn how to set up web servers, mail servers etc and Red Hat Linux Server 6 overlooks the basics. If anyone can point me in the right direction with a book/books that dont overlook the basics or can recommend classes or is prepared to teach me at a reasonable fee please help. Regards Kelvyn
Re: Good,simple book
From Robert Fisher: Hi Kelvyn, It is hard to advise you without knowing your level. (I think I am quite a novice but some others might think my level is quite high) I think it would be helpful if you tell us what you do know / can do. Regards, Robert I dont know exaxtly what you want to know, and if I dont tell you you'll say you should have told us that. So here goes: I cant install Linux :( I get lost with a lot of the terms used with most hardware/software. English was never my best subject. I have installed MySQL,Apache, php on my win box (the first time it took me 6 weeks). I can design/build databases (relational), query etc to a standard where I can use it for commercial use. I can write php scripts to a standard where I can use them on a commercial site. I can hack JS enough to get it to do what I want although I never use it for anything. I use html/css to a point where I can use it for commercial purposes. I work in PhotoShop and Fireworks. I'm currently learning Java and hope to move on to C++ as quick as possible. I can lay bricks (thats why I'm a bricklayer and not at work cos its raining). I can fix most vehicles that dont use a computer. And I can damage a computer to the point where it is uneconomical to repair it (I have several now). Lastly, I guess I could say I can work in dos, but dont offer to give me your computer to find out how well :) As you can see theres not much here, and nothing that will help with linux. Truth is I became a bricklayer for a good reason. About the only thing I have in my favour at the moment is that I've been on a learning curve for about 5yrs now and I'm not inclined to give up easy. Thanks for all the replies. Hope the above helps. Regards Kelvyn
Re: Good,simple book [Hijacked]
Steve wrote: The fact that you're comfortable in DOS will be in your favour. I dont think I ever used the word comfortable. But, I did try to diplomatically say dont give me your comp and let me into DOS. A friend of mine with no knowledge of vehicles took the distributor off his car without noting the firing order and then couldn't understand why his car didn't go. I'm about the same in DOS, or maybe just a little better (but its fun). Regards kelvyn
Re: Article: Linux is the least secure OS
Its given me an idea for a club nite...sit an unpatched Win PC on the net, and see how long it lasts... :-) I dont want to put a damper on this, but I purchased a comp for my lady a couple of weeks ago and installed an unpatched version of winXP Pro. While I was copying files (firewall,anti-virus) from my computer to cd my lady decided to test her new machine, I dont think she would have been online for 10 minutes and that was long enough for her to pick up a trojan. I cant imagine any unpatched Win PC lasting a hour, but it could still be good for a laugh. The sooner I find a cheap computer to install linux on so I can start learning more about it the better. Bill Gates may be a smart businessman, but if most manufacturers produced a product that had as many faults as MS software they would be bankrupt. Its rubbish and will remain that way while they have over 90% of the market.
Re: OT: 21 monitors - group order
Yeah, except that the bunch of people who seem to have no idea of offlist is even larger than I hoped. All the other people on the list really don't need to know how many monitors you want. Volker Did you read this: I'm a newbie so please excuse me if I'm getting this wrong. If I knew how to contact the person directly I would have. I dont really want a stack of emails in my inbox that mean little to me, I wish I had the ability to help with many of the emails I have received today but the facts are I dont and thats why I joined clug in the first place. All I'm interested in is getting emails on things I'm interested in or can help with, but if the price of that is all the emails I received today then thats the price. If I'm doing something that you consider *wrong* or that is disturbing you please tell me, I'm not here to upset anyone. I guess thats the introductions over and done with. Regards Kelvyn
Re: OT: 21 monitors - group order
I'm a newbie so please excuse me if I'm getting this wrong. I'm hanging out for the first meeting and in the meantime my mailbox is filled up with all your mail. So I received this email: Paul Wilkins wrote: C. Falconer wrote: I'm putting together an order for some ex lease 21 CRT monitors. If anyone wants to join me in buying some I will add you to my order. If its ok for a newbie to jump in here I would be very interested in 2 thanks. Let me know how you want payment to be arranged. Bank transfer, I can drop off cash, pay in advance if required.
