Re: Anyone else in Chch with broadband down?
Following up again - the broadband connection only lasted 20-30 minutes and has since been offline again. I've called several time and Telecom keep stating that there is a known broadband issue in this area with no ETA for fixing. Agh. The ADSL connection is active (it did go down for about an hour this afternoon) - it's just the PPP authentication that keeps trying over and over without success. Makes me wonder if I didn't have a static IP whether I'd be back online already. 15 hours and counting... :( --- On Thu, 13/8/09, Phill Coxon phi...@xtra.co.nz wrote: Received: Thursday, 13 August, 2009, 2:44 PM Okay - I'm back online now after doing another reset of the modem. From what I've been told there was a major dslam problem at the Linwood exchange which took out ADSL for 400 customers in the area including myself. Fortunately I was contacted directly by someone who was able to take action to get the problem resolved first thing this morning. So we're back online and hopefully staying online now.

Yes - that's its main downside. However I bet almost everyone here is using a caching nameserver (dnsmasq, djbdns, bind, or whatever is in your router) so only the first lookup is slow. BTW are you referring to alien and terminator as the slow DNS servers? Xtra now use dnsc1.xtra.co.nz (202.27.158.40) and dnsc2.xtra.co.nz (202.27.156.72) for normal usage. I tried changing the dns settings on my desktop to opendns, but of course that upset internal DNS services as opendns know nothing about our lan! It worked as before until the next reboot but then none of the internal apps back to the server worked. I had to call in the external people who mucked around for ages until it dawned on them that internal dns wasn't working, a quick ipconfig /all revealed the problem and I was very very red faced!

I had to call in the external people who mucked around for ages until it dawned on them that internal dns wasn't working, a quick ipconfig /all revealed the problem and I was very very red faced! Split DNS is what you want now... in dnsmasq add this in dnsmasq.conf server=/localnet/172.16.0.1 server=/criggie.dyndns.org/172.16.0.1 server=/0.16.172.in-addr.arpa/172.16.0.1 So requests for 172.16.0.* or *.criggie.dyndns.org are sent to 172.16.0.1 only, whereas any other DNS lookup is routed to the DNS servers listed in the setting. resolv-file=/etc/dnsmasq.resolv This is possible in other caching DNS servers too, but you'll have to google it. Nick - your router also might not allow DNS queries direct to the internet... depends what level of outbound access is permitted. Bog standard routers allow anything from lan -- internet, but any corporate network is more restrictive (for good reason) -- Craig Falconer
Anyone else in Chch with broadband down?
Anyone else with Telecom ADSL down in Christchurch at the moment? According to some Telecom person I spoke to somebody managed to cut a fibre optic cable on Wakrakei Road this morning at about 7:30am. We're still down in Opawa (currently using mobile broadband). Very annoying.

Sounds like a line of bull fertiliser. We have no hosts in Christchurch down, and thats out of a total of ~60. What kind of router is it? Do you have a PPP light and separate ADSL light? ADSL means can see DSL Carrier on the line (sometimes called CD) PPP means I have authenticated okay Routers with one LED tend to flash at different rates to show the difference. Get on the phone and call up xtra broadband helpdesk. Yes its painful, and you need your account number, and you need to be an authority on your account, but they're really the only people who can give you the answer. You no longer need a valid username and password in your xtra DSL router. Since the broadband cap is tied to your phone number and hence your line, the billing is done against that rather than the user/pass. The one exception is if you have a static IP - you won't get your one unless you do have the right username/password. You'll still get a dynamic IP though. So you need to ring up the xtra broadband helpdesk. Sorry. -- Craig Falconer
