[ILUG-BOM] Moderation of Commercial threads (inspired by: Linux expert with a monitoring background required)
Hi, Can we make it a practice|rule to NOT respond to threads that are marked Commercial, especially potentially inflammatory responses? We could have some kind of automated filter or something that blocks off replies to commercial threads. We could follow two simple rules: 1) Moderate Commercial tagged emails so that there is no spam coming in 2) Disallow replies to commercial threads. Any inquiries can be made off-list. Probably a bit more work for the mods but most off-the-line threads seem to spawn themselves from Commercial threads of late. Can we make it a practice|rule to NOT respond to threads that are marked Commercial, Iam new to the group and i use opera to surf/read/write emails on an u/xubuntu system. I do not see any marking on any of the emails suggesting commercial. I have not opted for the daily digest. Where does it say its commercial or otherwise? [ILUG-BOM] Google Earth problem.
Hello, I have recently moved to GNU/Linux, I recently installed Google Earth and iam unable to change the display to show up completely to my desktop resolution (1280x1024). It just shows up half way. Any ideas? Everything else working perfectly or i just do not know if anything is malfunctioning. Background: Newbie yet not so newbie user. Been exposed to linux since rh 5.3 but limited to just basic functionality and have moved to linux completely only now. If there is any more information you would like to have please let me know, onboard i810 intel 865 chipset, 2.4 GHz, 256 mb ram, swap around 700mb. Thank you in advance. Sachin G. [ILUG-BOM] as low as it gets: P2-350, 64 MB, 4 GB
Finally managed to get my hands on some P2 350s with 64 MB and 4 GB. CDROM thrown in too. (atleast in one of them). it has 98 for now, but planning to use a stripped down version of ubuntu. if there was ever such a thing. My basic (and probably only requirements are) 1) Wine 2) The two browsers. FF and IE. 3) a teeny .exe application that will be run over wine just like IE. Am pretty sure the above config should meet those needs, but is there any further stripping i need to do while installing the standard ubuntu 6.06 dapper drake to make it more lightweight? thanks abhi __ Do You Yahoo!? Just to inform you that in the US and possibly other countries, all DVD writers/roms sold require to have this lock. It is mandated by the RIAA/MPAA and by extension US law so that you cannot freely change regions to play DVDs released in other regions. The fact that you can change it 5 times is a privilege extracted from these agencies by the manufacturers of the devices. That Sony has it is not unique and it just says that they are selling the international model here in India. If other brands don't have this lock then they are probably chinese/taiwanese players who may not be fully complying with the law (if it applies in India). The minimum requirement for Debian GNU/Linux etch is 32MB RAM (It is 24 if you go for sarge) and 256MB Hard Disk space. I'm running WindowMaker now and it works awesome (I used to run GNOME but had toremove it as I needed Open Office and GNU/Hurd in the 2 GB). I have 1.1 GB for GNU/Linux if there was ever such a thing. My basic (and probably only requirements are) 1) Wine I have tried it in my office desktop 2) The two browsers. FF and IE. This is pretty much a FAQ, but for the sake of completeness, here goes: Unix systems have the conecpt of a user home directory. This is the place where you start from when you log in. This is usually represented by the character ~. Applications have their configurations in dot files (the file names start with a .) in the user home directory. Global configuration information like passwords or system wide configuration files go into /etc. Normally, mail is stored in ~, but you may also find it being stored in your mail spool directory (/var/mail or /var/spool/mail on Linux systems, mostly). In the case of RH, home directories are under /home, so as long as you back that up, you should have most of your customisations. Keep in mind that version changes can affect configuration files or directories, particularly in the case of application suites like GNOME and KDE. For most people though, backing up ~ and /var/spool/ should save system state. A backup of /etc/ is advisable as well, _particularly_ /etc/X11. If you are switching distros, you should recreate your users manually (or script it using chpasswd(8)). Then after you have restored /home, run 'chown -R user: /home/user/' as root, where user is to be substituted by the appropriate user name.
