Excellent! Looks like we can have one more
collaborative effort. I have set up a wiki page
initiating a FOSS based Cyber cafe and added a
temporary structure to it.

I'm not sure whether the structure is good, but, its a
wiki, so you have the authority to change.

Go ahead, get your keys- on the -board. Punch in here

If the URL is broken, copy paste or navigate from the

Few recommendations on the software for the cafe admin -

If its Gnome then

1. Pessulus -

From its about - enables the system administrator to set mandatory settings in

GConf, which apply to all users, restricting what they can do, which may
be of particular usefulness for kiosks (internet cafes, for example).
Note : This tool has lot of missing features, yet worthwile.

2. Sabayon - www.gnome.org/projects/sabayon
About - This powerful tool allows administrators to create profiles
for groups of users, for example Programmers or Admin Staff and set
certain default and mandatory settings for these groups.

If its KDE then

1. Kiosktool - http://extragear.kde.org/apps/kiosktool/
About : A PointClick tool for system administrators to enable KDE's
KIOSK features or otherwise preconfigure KDE for groups of users.

I am quite hopeful that this initative will result in important
lessons in large scale workstation management and such.

[ILUG-BOM] LUG meeting btwn 4/2 and 4/9?

2007-03-29 Thread Russ Nelson
Hi. I'll be in Mumbai between 4/2 and 4/9. If you're having a
meeting then, or want to arrange one, I can speak on various topics,
like Open Source licensing, or Politics and Technology of the DNS.

I can also bring my One Laptop Per Child XO machine. It's a way cool
piece of hardware.

I'm consulting for Rediff.com, so I'll be busy all day. I can
probably get away by 7 (they work me hard), and the office is in Mahim
West.

I'm leaving in about 41 hours, so act promptly!

Russ its a small world ! well i actually happen to know him , i studied in

1) immediate options to think of is if rediff can spare their conf room for
sometime
2) another closer option could be VJTI college ( matunga ) given that i m
not in bombay these days might need help from others to co-ordinate that. if
someone is ready to go and check i can give contact names off the list
3) usual places like KRESIT (IIT bombay) and HBCSE would be quite far for
reaching on any given evening.
4) we actually meet up in the toy train !
5) a evening snack at a coffee shop or a joint like JATC ( in bandra )

lets try to close on the date. then we can try to fix the place

 # http_proxy=http://proxy IP or hostname:port
 # export http_proxy

Below is the perfect proxy setting in bash...

#export http_proxy=http://username:password@IP of Proxy Server:port

If proxy authentication is not ther then below would be enough...

The problem lies in the DNS.

When you set the proxy, http requests go through the proxy.. including
the url.. so if the proxy server machine has a DNS resolver IP
configured, the proxy will be able to resolve the IP and thus will be
able to get the data.

But when you ping from your machine, it does not know how to reach the
pinged machine as you niether have it in /etc/hosts nor have you
configured a DNS resolver IP on your machine.

So you have to configure a DNS resolver IP on your machine if you want
to be able to ping.

I tried the above but now when i try to ping www.google.com

The problem lies in the DNS.

When you set the proxy, http requests go through the proxy.. including
the url.. so if the proxy server machine has a DNS resolver IP
configured, the proxy will be able to resolve the IP and thus will be
able to get the data.

But when you ping from your machine, it does not know how to reach the
pinged machine as you niether have it in /etc/hosts nor have you
configured a DNS resolver IP on your machine.

So you have to configure a DNS resolver IP on your machine if you want
to be able to ping.

Not only that, a machine behind a proxy probabely wont have access to an
external DNS server. Unless there is a firewall which is allowing outgoing DNS
queries on port 53.
Best way is to configure a caching DNS server on the proxy itself. And use that
as the DNS server LAN wide. It would also speed up things a bit.
